  • Igbo foundation hails Buhari

The Foundation for Promotion of Igbo Music, Language, Culture and Tradition (Igbo Foundation) has congratulated the President –elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, on his victory at the polls in the last presidential election held throughout Nigeria on Saturday, the 28th day of March, 2015.

In a statement signed by the foundation’s National Chairman, Augustine Iheanacho Okechukwu, the foundation said, “Your election as the next President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is symbolic and historic. It is historical in the sense that this is the first time in the history of Nigeria where an opposition party has successfully unseated a sitting government by peaceful and democratic means which is the only method of change of government approved by the Constitution. You have made history.

“While we congratulate the president-elect, we must continue to be grateful to His Excellency, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Commander In-Chief of the Armed Forces for his magnanimity in accepting the out-come of the Presidential Election. For so doing, Dr. Jonathan has proven himself to be a great democrat and has succeeded in writing his name in the sand of times in the Letters of Gold.

  • ‘Enough of Igbo disruption in Lagos’

We, Oodua Foundation, comprising Yoruba intellectuals, professionals, business leaders, government officials, and military officers, in countries across the world, are constrained to make our position absolutely clear about the noise now surrounding the Igbo immigrant resident community in the Yoruba kingdom of Lagos in Southwestern Nigeria.

Whatever we say now, or at any other time or place, has nothing to do with partisan politics. We do not support or oppose any Nigerian political party. Our sole and only concern at all times is to protect, defend and promote the interest of the Yoruba nation.

As all other peoples of Nigeria abundantly know by now, the Yoruba nation are no strangers to democracy. Nearly one thousand years before the British introduced democratic politics and elections to Nigeria, the Yoruba had been practicing a sound and stable culture of democratic politics. In our system, we respected the sovereignty of the people, strongly upheld freedom of expression and association, and democratically selected our kings and chiefs.

Consequently, more than most of other peoples today, Yoruba people cherish the system whereby people freely elect public officials of their choice.

However, our attention from all over the globe has been drawn to the loud and disturbing noise now going on in Lagos concerning the coming election of a governor for Lagos State.

As has happened often in the past, the Igbo resident refugees in Lagos, in their characteristic disrespect of their hosts in all parts of Nigeria, have chosen to turn the election situation in Lagos into a contest between themselves and the Yoruba nation. We need to warn them very seriously that they are unfortunately making their position in the Yoruba kingdom of Lagos very precarious.

As all Nigerians would testify, we Yoruba love to welcome and include foreigners into our land. For this reason, most folks fleeing from various difficult conditions in all parts of Nigeria choose our homeland in Southwestern Nigeria as their destination. Apart from the Igbo people, large numbers of other Nigerian nationals now reside in the Yoruba Southwest, with strong concentrations in Lagos.

With the exception of the Igbo, all the rest are civil and respectful in their relationships with other nationals and with their Yoruba hosts. Though most Igbo people in Lagos do settle down peacefully to raise their children and pursue their businesses, certain so-called leaders in the Igbo resident community attach a lot of value to being noisy, obstreperous and disruptive in society.

Refusing to be grateful for what they and their people are benefiting from Yorubaland, these ones choose to constitute themselves into   constant pain and trouble. The Yoruba people of Lagos, and other Lagos residents from other parts of Nigeria, are becoming tired of having these prickly characters around us.

In the current bubble in the usual Igbo mayhem in Lagos, we are being inundated with strange and ridiculous claims about the history of Lagos and of the Yoruba nation – and of the Igbo.

We are far above arguing points of history with the caliber of people who are engaging in these exercises. Out of respect for the majority of Igbo people who respect others and deserve to be respected, we will say no more than this: Very many Nigerians know the precolonial history of Igboland. No amount of panel-beating and polishing can change that.

Almost all Nigerians, and most informed people in the world, know the history of the Yoruba nation. No amount of distortion can change that.

When some thieves or fools see a beautiful and attractive thing belonging to someone else, all they can think of is to grab or steal it. The beautiful and attractive kingdom of Lagos is ours; it belongs to us the Yoruba nation. No people on earth can steal or grab it. You who claim to be Igbo leaders in Lagos set the world laughing when you parade yourselves as “Ezes” in Lagos. Lagos has its legitimate king and chiefs. Towns, cities, kingdoms and stable institutions take time to build – yes, a lot of time, stretching to centuries. Ask your Yoruba hosts.

Our king, the Oba of Lagos, has spoken as it occurred to him to speak, liberally employing powerful Yoruba metaphors in the process. His subjects understand him. But it is not surprising to us if some foreigners resident in Lagos cannot understand him. However, we need to inform those foreigners that there are prescribed and acceptable ways in which we Yoruba people speak with or to our kings – ways that evolved during hundreds of years of our living in our cities and kingdoms.

Disrespecting our kings, as the Igbo “leaders” have disrespected the Oba of Lagos in the past few days, is repugnant to our culture.  Were such to happen again, it will be an affront that we Yoruba people all over the world will find it difficult to forgive.

We remind those Igbo who love to cause noise and tension in Lagos that you chose to come on your own, and that the Oba and people of Lagos did not invite you to come. The roads by which you came are still open. You are free to return home. We Yoruba are not causing disruption in your homeland; you have no right to continue to cause disruption in our homeland.

As to the amount of Igbo participation in the government of Lagos, that is something that can only happen through love and friendship. None of our Lagos politicians has a right to use underhand means to give any part of Lagos, or any portion of the institutions of Lagos State, to any group of foreigners.

  • Igbo urged to vote Ambode

The Eze Ndigbo of Lagos State, Dr. Christian Uchechukwu Nwachukwu (JP), has urged Ndigbo to vote for the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in tomorrow’s election, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode and other APC candidates.

Nwachukwu, who spoke yesterday, said: “Ndigbo should know that our relationship with the government and party has not changed and will not change. We must not allow the unfortunate statement credited to the Oba of Lagos, HRH Rilwanu Akiolu, to make us lose focus and act negatively in order not to expose our investment in Lagos to risk.”

The Eze Ndigbo enjoined the Igbo not to be afraid of their safety in the state.

He said the Igbo cannot be intimidated, adding: “My people should vote wisely by voting for Ambode and other APC candidates to cement the cordial relationship between us and the Yoruba.”

  • Igbo leaders in Lagos endorse Ambode

Igbo leaders in Lagos State have endorsed the candidature of the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, noting that the needed transformation from the centre will be achieved if Ambode’s ambition is supported.

They spoke after a meeting with traditional rulers in Amuwo Odofin Local Government, at the council Secretariat, Festac Town, Lagos.

The Igbo leaders averred that Lagos has been their home and they will always support the progressives. They enjoined all Igbo to vote for Ambode.

The Chairman of Ndi Eze, Lagos, Eze Gordian Dim, also refuted the “hate” comment by the Oba of Lagos.

“What transpired at the Oba’s palace was not what was painted by some media organisations. I engineered the whole process, and I can say confidently to you that the Oba statement was misconstrued and should be discarded.

“His statement was a joke and we all laughed through it, we even promised him a wife,” he noted.

The Onilado of Ilado and Inagbe Island, Oba Mobadenle Oyekan thanked them for the visit and assured them that Lagos is home to all and the government would never deny any citizen his or her right, as well as discriminate anybody irrespective of tribe, religion or ethnic background.

  • ‘Hausa, Igbo will vote for Ajimobi’

‘Hausa, Igbo will vote for Ajimobi’

The leaders of the Hausa and Igbo communities in Oyo State have pledged their support to ensure that their kinsmen vote for Governor Abiola Ajimobi in the April 11 elections.

The Ezendigbo of Ibadanland, Eze Alex Anozie, and a leader of Hausa community in Sabo, Alh Yahaya Baba-Ahmed, spoke in separate interviews in Ibadan yesterday.

Anozie said he was one of the advocates of “Ajimobi must continue”, adding that the governor has achieved unprecedented records in the state and needs to be supported to complete his projects.

“The April 11 elections will be free, fair and credible and I am mobilising my people to vote for Ajimobi and APC candidates because I believe four years is not enough for any government to achieve reasonable growth.

“I am not partial, all other governorship candidates are good but Ajimobi has surpassed them and needs to be voted in again for continuity and development,” he said.

Anozie added that voters should not be deceived by the campaign of calumny against Ajimobi that he has demolished shops.

“Demolition was not done in Oyo State alone, it was done in most states and it was even worse in some states.”

Baba-Ahmed, who is also a leader of All Progressives Congress (APC), said apart from what the Ajimobi administration has done for his community, residents are eager to vote for him because of Muhammadu Buhari’s victory.

He said in the state’s history no government has included his kinsmen in his cabinet, but the governor appointed a Hausa man as a Special Adviser on Arewa community.

His words: “Governor Ajimobi has a listening ear and he is a people friendly governor who has a passion for the needs of the people at the grassroots.

“A vote for Ajimobi is a vote for development of my people also. He donated a transformer to us when we were in darkness, empowered our people with free motorcycles and he is renovating our central mosque.”

He warned former Governor Adebayo Alao- Akala to desist from deceiving the masses with his posters that Buhari supports his ambition.

  • Artistes express joy over Igbo movie channel

  • Igbo APC leaders lament Southeast’s fate after polls

Igbo APC leaders lament Southeast’s fate after polls

The fate of the Southeast in the next dispensation came under focus yesterday in Owerri, the Imo State capital, as leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the zone reviewed the outcome of the presidential and National Assembly elections.

In the results posted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), all the 15 senatorial seats and House of Representatives seats in the five states- Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Anambra and Abia –  were won by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

But the APC will control the federal government, following the election of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha lamented at the meeting that the Igbo may lose the chance to produce the next Senate President.

He blamed Igbo leaders from the zone for the “unfortunate” situation, adding that “their selfishness and lack of vision have kept Ndigbo in the back seat of the nation’s politics, despite their contributions to the overall development of the country.”

Okorocha added: “It is very painful for the Igbo to lose the position of the Senate President after being denied any leading position in the country for a long time because our political leaders and office holders used their positions to rig out APC candidates in the election.

“There was no election in the entire Southeast on the 28th of March. The PDP leaders with the aid of the military and INEC officials intimidated and harassed our people and thereafter wrote the results in their homes. I assure you that all hope is not lost because we are going to recover our stolen mandate.

“We saw it coming and we told the political leaders why Ndigbo should embrace the APC but they could not believe us but today the story has changed and the PDP they have been following all these years with nothing to show for it’s now an opposition party.”

The governor assured APC supporters that the hope of the Igbo of regaining the senate presidency was not totally lost.

An APC leader, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu observed that with the emergence of the APC, politics had changed considerably.

He noted that it was the first time in the history of Nigeria that power will be transferred from one political party to another, adding that “Nigeria is moving forward and the Southeast must not be left behind”.

He said: “For too long, the Southeast put all their political eggs in one basket. They were taken for granted. The things that were of great importance to them were left undone. They gave their very best to the PDP but got little or nothing to show for it. The people of the Southeast should embrace the APC and make it the number one party in the zone.

“The people of the Southeast need Nigeria just as Nigeria needs them. We must be in the mainstream of Nigerian politics. Our political home should be the APC. In the last election, members of the APC in the Southeast were not treated fairly. They were harassed and intimidated by the PDP and those who were rejected were declared winners.”

Senator Chris Ngige, who lost his reelection bid in Anambra Central Senatorial zone, said the PDP had no scorecard to show Nigeria, especially in the Southeast.

He assured the people that the March 28 election was the end of bad elections in the country. “We are happy that the manipulation of the PDP in the Southeast could not stop the APC from winning the election,” Ngige said.

The APC National Auditor, Chief George Moghalu, praised the people for having confidence in the pioneer members of the APC in the zone, when the message of change was first brought to the zone.

“We are here today to thank those of you that believed in us and we assure you that you will not be left behind. Majority of the so-called political leaders from the zone could not see what we saw and today they will come back to benefit from a system they tried hard to destroy.”

Also at the gathering were APC National Organising Secretary, Senator Osita Izunaso, APC Deputy National Woman Leader Mrs Gladys Amuneke and APC governorship candidates in the Southeast states.

  • MASSOB warns Igbo against being used

The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has warned Ndigbo to be wary of politicians who will use and dump them after the general elections.

Southeastern states of Anambra, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi and Enugu recently hosted the two major presidential candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dame Jonathan and Femi-Fani Kayode who, at a press conference in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, solicited support for the re-election of President Jonathan and his Vice, Namadi Sambo and other PDP candidates at the March and April polls.

The group said they were advising Ndigbo against some politicians who had no agenda for them but who answer Igbo names and become their in-laws during elections only to revert to their native names after winning elections.

MASSOB said such people should not be allowed to use their campaign of deceit to get the support of the people who they would later dump or relegate to political background after being elected or re-elected into office.

MASSOB’s National Assistant Director for Information, Sunny Okereafor said in Aba that it was annoying that Nigerian politicians were at it again; crisscrossing the entire Southeast to canvass votes, even when they had not done “anything for the people of the zone in the past”.

“Nigerian politicians are at it again; some of them are once more answering Igbo names and also claiming that they are our in-laws, wooing the people for their votes, but when they win the elections, they will revert to their native names, and abandon the people of the Southeast.

“They have fooled Ndigbo for a long time and MASSOB will not allow them to continue to fool the people.”

According to Okereafor, it is only in Nigeria that someone would spend years in office, loot public fund and yet walks freely on the streets without being compelled to account for his actions while in office. When he is leaving office, he would force on the people, his or her preferred candidate even when it is against the wishes of the people.

“It is in Nigeria that someone will occupy political position for four or eight years without tangible proof of achievement. Yet he will anoint a successor and force him on the people even when they refuse to accept such a person as their leader. This they do to help them cover their acts while they (outgoing public servants) were in power. This is a criminal act,” he said.

While warning that Nigeria was at a crossroads, the MASSOB chieftain stated that the group would continue to use a non-violence means in pursuant of its campaigns for the emancipation of the people and the realisation of an independent state of Biafra.

  • ‘Igbo have not adopted presidential candidate’

A Southeast organisation, the Igbo Conversational Group (ICG), has rejected any “wholesale endorsement” of any presidential candidate, saying the Igbo have not adopted anyone.

The group, a “collegial and non-partisan platform to canvass Igbo interest”, met in Enugu where it held a “conversation” on the theme: 2015 and the Igbo question.

The meeting had the sub-theme: Agwo No N’Akirika (There is snake within the dry palm frond (or there is imminent danger).

A communiqué at the meeting said discussants and other participants were unanimous that the Igbo nation is “most regrettably” going to the polls without extracting any commitments from any of the presidential candidates.

“Consequently, members rejected any wholesale endorsement without obtaining any commitment from the presidential candidates for the development of our homeland,” ICG said.

The discussants noted that the Igbo would work with and support any of the presidential candidates, who genuinely commits himself, unambiguously, to specific issues affecting the Igbo, and responds to questions on performance on previous promises, where applicable.

ICG said it mandated a committee to engage with President Goodluck Jonathan and General Muhammadu Buhari “to extract a concrete commitment on Igbo strategic interests and fears…”

It said the Igbo are interested in having a president with the capacity to restore the country’s collective integrity and create for the Igbo an atmosphere to further develop their spirit and gift of enterprise.

The group will meet on Thursday to “consider and discuss the outcome of the direct engagement with the frontline candidates,” and would issue a statement indicating who made a commitment enhancing the strategic interest of Ndigbo.

The communiqué was signed by former Imo State Governor Ikedi Ohakim,  Chidi Duru, Chike Maduekwe and Bishop Blaise Iwuogo.

  • Igbo movies make debut on Africa Magic

Igbo movies make debut on Africa Magic

There are indications of a rise in the production of Igbo language movies, as pay TV company, DStv, has dedicated a channel to this genre.

This is one of the latest in the offerings of the channel, and possible justification for a recent upward review of its tarrifs.

Following the debut of Nollywood English productions on the Africa Magic channel, offerings of local language started with Yoruba movies, then Hausa movies.

The company said the new addition is in line with its ongoing development strategy, as the new channel is designed to showcase the rich Igbo culture of Nigeria.

The Igbo channel which brings to eight the total number of Africa Magic channels, is expected to go on air at 19:00 CAT on April 2, on on DStv channel 159.

“Igbo language entertainment content has always played a prominent role in the Nigerian film and television industry and we are glad to offer a platform where this rich content can be showcased to the rest of Africa and the world,” said M-Net Director (West Africa), Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu. According to her, “Popular Igbo language content like Living in Bondage, Nneka the Pretty Serpent and many others set the trend for the modern Nigerian film and television industry, or Nollywood as it’s called; it is thus only fitting that such content should be given a platform where it is easily accessible by audiences around the continent. With the launch of Africa Magic Igbo, we have once again proven our commitment to providing content made for Africa by Africans.”

For Managing Director, Multichoice Nigeria, Mr. John Ugbe, “For over 20 years, Multichoice has played an active role in the development of the African film and television industry. With the launch of Africa Magic Igbo, we have once again provided a platform for African talent to shine and our viewers can definitely expect to see the best of Igbo culture and talent on display.”

The first Africa Magic channel was launched in 2003 and more than 10 years later, the brand has expanded to include content dedicated to world class African entertainment programming ranging from drama series, music, magazine and reality shows, and movies.

“All the Africa Magic channels are renowned for their exciting content which celebrates African entertainment and Africa Magic Igbo will be no different. The channel will appeal to audiences in and outside Nigeria, as the Igbo language is also spoken in a number of other African countries like Equatorial Guinea, Democratic Republic of Congo and Gabon. Africa Magic Igbo will also undoubtedly be popular with audiences across the continent as shown by the widespread success of the popular Igbo language movies of the 1990s, and our viewers can expect to see the best from renowned and exciting Igbo talent like Okey Bakassi, Chiwetalu Agu and Dede One Day amongst many others,” added Mba-Uzoukwu.
