Igboho urges Alaafin, Olubadan to unite against insecurity, development challenges

Yoruba nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has called on the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, to work together to tackle insecurity in Yorubaland and advance development in the South West, rather than engage in disputes over positions.

Igboho said it was unnecessary for the two foremost traditional rulers, whose stools are central to the historical evolution of the Yoruba people, to expend energy on a crisis over leadership positions.

His appeal followed the ongoing tussle over the rotational chairmanship of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs involving the Olubadan of Ibadanland, the Alaafin of Oyo, and the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Laoye Ghandi.

Governor Seyi Makinde had last Thursday inaugurated a new Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs in Ibadan, with the permanent chairmanship to rotate among the Olubadan, Alaafin, and Soun of Ogbomoso.

The inauguration, held at the House of Chiefs Hall, State Secretariat, Ibadan, was boycotted by Oba Owoade, while Oba Ladoja emerged as the inaugural chairman for a two-year term.

Makinde explained that the inauguration followed the passage of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs (Further Amendments) Bill, 2025, by the Oyo State House of Assembly, aimed at strengthening traditional institutions in the state.

The governor said the process was preceded by wide consultations, although Alaafin reportedly denied holding any interface with the governor on the matter.

Reacting, Igboho, in a statement, appealed to Yoruba leaders, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and the Olugbon of Orile Igbon, Oba Francis Olushola Alao, to help douse the tension arising from the controversy over the council’s permanent chairmanship.

He noted that ancient empires in Yorubaland had evolved into modern traditional institutions without distorting historical realities, and advised Oba Owoade, who is reportedly considering legal action, to cooperate with the Oyo State Government.

Igboho said traditional rulers should prioritise security and unity, particularly in the face of rising insecurity in the South West.

“Why should our royal fathers dissipate energy on positions when bandits, terrorists, and other criminal elements have taken over our forests in the South West, considering the recent killings of guards in Old Oyo National Park and other parts of Oyo State?” he asked.

He added that it was critical for traditional rulers, regardless of hierarchy, to close ranks to protect Yoruba territorial integrity, foster unity, and promote sustainable development in the collective interest of the region.

According to him, traditional rulers must remain agents of cohesion, harmony, and economic growth, stressing that disputes over positions were ill-timed when rural communities, especially farmers, continued to suffer violent attacks.

Igboho seeks Tinubu’s intervention over alleged killing of three farmers in Oyo community

Yoruba Nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene following the alleged killing of three farmers during a fresh attack by suspected herdsmen in his hometown, Igboho, Oyo State.

Igboho is located in Orelope Local Government Area of the Oke Ogun axis of the state.

Igboho alleged that the victims, identified as Aderoju Mukaila, Olawuwo Saka and Ojeniyi Ojebayo, were attacked after they protested the destruction of their farms by grazing cattle.

He said the farmers were hacked during the incident and later died after being rushed to hospital.

In a statement, the activist called on President Tinubu and the Federal Government to urgently address the worsening insecurity in rural communities across Oyo State and the wider South West to prevent further violence.

“On Sunday, three innocent people were killed in my town, Igboho. This is exactly what I have been warning the government about for years. Nothing has changed, and our people continue to suffer attacks while those responsible roam freely,” the statement read.

He further urged the government and security agencies to step up efforts to protect lives and property in the Oke Ogun axis, noting that insecurity has become a daily reality for residents of Igboho and neighbouring communities.

“I have been expressing concern before this fresh attack over the inimical activities of rogue Fulani herders, bandits and hoodlums, who have infiltrated rural settlements and forests in the South West, part of Kwara and Kogi states.

“It is more incumbent now for the Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu and security agencies to deploy effective measures aimed at addressing insecurity, most especially the deadly activities of criminals wrecking havoc in our communities.

“Victims of killings occasioned by violence and attacks and their relatives are now in a state of despair because their patience and tolerance have reached its elastic limit.

“The Federal Government and relevant security agencies should not hesitate to take decisive actions until residents and locals resolve to take laws into their hands in order to defend themselves.

“Hoodlums and other non state actors perpetrating attacks and killings of helpless farmers, local residents in South West communities should be promptly arrested to the face full wrath of law for their heinous crimes.

“Actionable intelligence should also be explored by security agencies in order to nip in the bud attacks, violence and criminalities with a views.”

Although he did mention the name of the friend, but he claimed the betrayal led to the killing of his cat in the raid, describing it as a direct attempt on his life.

“When my house was invaded (by DSS operatives), they wanted to kill me but failed. They fired guns at me very well, but the prayers of you my fathers on me were answered,” Adeyemo said.

Recounting his ordeal, Igboho, who was later arrested in Cotonou, Benin Republic, while attempting to flee, appealed to the monarch to intervene on his behalf.

Sunday Igboho slams ‘faceless’ protesters plotting to destabilise govt

Yoruba Nation Activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho has distanced himself and his organisation from the planned protest scheduled to begin on Thursday.

Igboho, who is one of the Yoruba Nation arrowheads, made his position known in a statement yesterday, which he said, is in response to the planned protests by some unknown and “faceless individuals, who are working to disintegrate the country”.

He applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for implementing revolutionary policies especially increasing minimum wage, reducing food prices.

Igboho said:”Since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s assumed office on May 29th, 2023, he has implemented revolutionary policies, which his predecessors lacked the political will to pursue.

“These bold steps have, unsurprisingly, unsettled those who believe it is their birth right to rule Nigeria. And in response, there have been attempts to undermine his administration, particularly on social media, with the aim of creating discord between the government and the people.

“Recently, we have become aware of notices from unknown individuals threatening “10 days of rage” beginning August 1st, 2024, under the slogan “Tinubu Must Go!” While the right to peaceful protest is enshrined in our Constitution, it does not extend to calls for an unconstitutional regime change.

“It is worth noting that during President Buhari’s eight-year tenure, there were no such protests for regime change from the Southwest, even when our people faced oppression and atrocities by Fulani terrorists. Our protests were focused on protecting our communities, not on destabilizing the country.

Igboho further declared that the Yoruba Nation Movement will not participate in the protest, stressing that it is politically motivated.

He said: “The Yoruba Nation Movement and I firmly declare that we will not participate in any protest aimed at using the Southwest as a battleground for political upheaval. We stand resolute in our belief that the Yoruba nation will not be a launchpad for disintegrating Nigeria.

“We recognize that economic hardship is a global phenomenon, not unique to Nigeria. Since my release from the unjust detention orchestrated by former President Buhari and his then attorney general of federation, Abubakar Malami, I have travelled extensively across Europe, the Middle East, West Africa, and North America.

“Everywhere, people are facing challenges, and governments are implementing palliatives to alleviate these hardships.  In Nigeria, PBAT’s government has introduced measures to reduce food prices and increased the minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000, demonstrating a commitment to improving the lives of the working populace.

“Let us be clear: the protest is politically motivated. We call on all Yoruba people and well-meaning Nigerians to reject this movement. The Yoruba Nation unequivocally opposes any such protests.

“Like President Buhari, President Tinubu must be allowed to complete his term in office. The path to change lies in democratic processes—through the ballot box or a referendum. Those who seek change must wait until the next elections in 2027.

“We urge our members and the broader community to resist any temptation to participate in these protests, as they do not serve the interests of the Yoruba people or the nation as a whole.

“We also issue a strong and unequivocal warning that we will firmly resist any individuals or groups attempting to instigate violence under the guise of these protests. They are strictly warned to stay off the streets across the Yorubaland on the designated protest days and in the future. To be forewarned is to be forearmed.”

Adams urges court to dismiss Igboho’s defamation case

Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has urged the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan to dismiss a defamation case filed against him by Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly called Igboho.

He denied defaming Igboho’s reputation.Adams made the averment in his statement of defence against a N500million defamation suit by Igboho.

The claimant seeks an order compelling the defendant to pay the sum as aggravated damages over a leaked audio conversation which he claimed impugned his reputation

Igboho is praying for “a declaration that the content of an audio clip between the defendant (Adams) and a third party named Nuru Banjo that took place sometime in November 2021 and further published on all news media platforms, including Youtube, is slanderous, libellous and defamatory”.

But, Adams told the court that Igboho’s suit was gold-digging, outrageous, wide and wild, insupportable, ridiculous, and should be dismissed with substantial costs awarded against the claimant.

He averred that Igboho’s claims were mere falsehoods, fabrications, and  figment of his imagination.

The defendant stated that he is a responsible, reputable, and notable traditional and cultural figure and personality in Nigeria.

He said he was committed to the peace, security, prosperity, and development of Nigeria, particularly Yorubaland, and does not engage in frivolities, gossip, or baseless allegations.

Adams questioned Igboho’s antecedents, saying the agitator had manifested traits of violence and therefore had no reputation to protect.

Adams cited many instances in which Igboho made what appeared to be defamatory statements against prominent Nigerians.

“There was another video where he rained curses on the Ooni of Ife, describing the monarch as a madman.

“He claimed the Ooni collected money from former President Buhari and refused to say the truth about the ‘Yoruba Nation’s’ cause.

“Igboho had alleged that President Buhari was scared of him and claimed that the Ooni of Ife had collected bags of ‘Ghana Must Go’ filled with dollars from Buhari, saying he had been compromised by politicians, and urged his supporters to take up Ooni on the matter…

“He abused senators, governors and President thoroughly, even as he described them as Oloriburuku because they were deceiving Nigerians and taking undue advantage of them.

“He advised that his detractors should not visit him at night and must not come with less than 1000 men, boasting that if 1,000 men besieged his house, hardly would 100 men go unhurt and would only escape through spiritual means,” Adams told the court.

The defendant chronicled various reports and situations to affirm his claims on the claimant’s character and lifestyle.

“With specific reference to the libellous statement complained of by the claimant, I know as a fact that the defendant (Adams) neither made the said statement nor published same,” the defendant said.

Adams alleged that it was rather the claimant who had been ridiculing and deriding his status as Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, having described him as “a mere Aareonakakanfo of Oyo”

The defendant’s statement of defence is supported by an affidavit deposed to by Chief B. A Tanimowo, the Atoloye Aare Onakakanfo of Yoruba Land and a member of Aare in Council.

It was signed by five lawyers including Oluwole Kehinde, Chief Yinka Oguntimehin, Rosemary Thompson, Chief B.A. Tanimowo, and Yusuf Ogunrinde.

Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams has asked the Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo popularly known as Sunday Igboho, to either apologise or face legal action for allegedly invading his privacy.

Adams made this demand in a pre-litigation letter written on his behalf by his counsel, Adesina Ogunlana.

In the letter dated June 4, 2024, and addressed to Igboho, Iba Adams detailed how the Yoruba nation activist allegedly infringed on his fundamental human rights.

He alleged that Igboho intruded on his privacy by publishing in the media, a private conversation he had with a friend sometime in 2021.

Adams described Igboho’s action as a deliberate, reckless, and malicious breach of his fundamental rights to privacy as constitutionally guaranteed as cognisable in Section 37 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended.

“Nonetheless, despite your affront to the honour and reputation of our Client, the great weight of his traditional title and office dictates first an embrace of rapprochement with you as a brother worthy and so, we have his instructions to request for an amicable settlement of his grievance in this matter with your good self.

“To that end, our Client considers a month from the day of your receipt of this letter time adequate enough, to receive your response. However, where you treat this our letter with disdain or ignore, our Client shall recourse to the law to press claims”, the letter reads in part.

Igboho, Akintoye disown Oyo Yoruba Nation agitators

The leader of Yoruba Self Determination group, Professor Banji Akintoye and Yoruba Nation Activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho have distanced themselves from a group of agitators that invaded the Oyo State Government Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan on  Saturday.

The duo said they were not aware or in support of the agitators and their actions.

Akintoye said those involved were not fighting for Yoruba interests but against the Yorubas in their conducts.

He said available information indicated the group appointed an interim government for the Yoruba Nation and decided to take over the region from the Oyo State secretariat, which informed the deployment of  men in military camouflage.

Prof Akintoye said: “I am not connected, I have no contact and I do not know anything about Onitiri and her group. I don’t know what they are doing.

” I learnt they are engaged in some sort of insanity in Ibadan but that is entirely they, and it has noting to do with me or people like Chief Sunday Igboho who are working with me.

“We are the authentic Yoruba Nation Movement. We are not connected. We are the people fighting for Youna Nation freedom and we will win the war peacefully and in an orderly manner.

“They are not struggling for the Yoruba Nation, they are struggling against the Yoruba Nation. I am not aware of the situation that happened in Ibadan until I was informed by Chief Sunday Igboho this morning. I am not part of it. They are not from us. They are followers of Onitiri. It is a lunatic fringe. We in this struggle won’t act in such a manner.”

“We will announce our plans and all our leaders and other stakeholders will also be involved and we will collaborate to do so.

“So, anything they now do on their own, either they attack the government or military barrack or Police station, I know nothing about it and I am not part of it.”
