Adams, Igboho face-off deepens despite Ooni’s peace move

The rift between the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, and Yoruba Nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo (Igboho) has deepened.

Despite the peace deal brokered by prominent traditional rulers including, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the two activists have refused to sheath their swords.

Adams and Igboho are threatening each other with legal actions and demanding for public apologies.

The two leaders have been at loggerheads, following an alleged  leaked telephone conversation focussing on Igboho between Adams and another person.

In a letter of March 25, 2024 addressed to the Uoruba Generalisimo, Igboho’s awyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, demanded an immediate retraction of what he described as “scandalous, malicious and defamatory statement” made against him.

He also demanded that within 48hours, the Aare should admit in two national publications that he falsely accused Igboho or be ready to pay a damage of N10billion.

But, Adams warned that his silence should not be taken as cowardice on the alleged defamation of character.

He said the allegations were deliberate efforts by some individuals to drag his name in the mud.

Reflecting on the controversy generated by the alleged audio clips, Adams said he was ready to set the records straight on the questions hanging in the balance on the alleged defamation contained in the clips.

He said in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Aderemi, that  the ongoing suit by Igboho and the Chief of Staff to the Lagos State Governor, Mr.Tayo Ayinde, was a  grand conspiracy to discredit his person.

Adams said he was prepared to protect his hard -earned name and the office  he represents.

He said Igboho and Ayinde are not ready to toe the line of peace as initiated by the Ooni of Ife.

Adams said: “The reason for my silence in the midst of the various legal and media infractions by Igboho and Ayinde was not because I am a coward, but because of the initial interventions of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, other prominent Obas and several other important personalities in Yorubaland.

“But with the ongoing lies and aspersions against my person, I think it is time for me to come out open and set the record straight.

“Though, my legal team have done what was required of them, I need to state it clearly that the audio clip generating the squabbles was a distorted and disjointed content of a private conversation which held way back in 2021 with a US-based younger brother of a friend.

“The conversation was initiated by the young man who claimed he wanted a reconciliation between myself, Igboho and some other people. It was while responding on reasons for reconciliation at the time that he mentioned the names of the two people.”

“In the said audio, I said it repeatedly that though it was very difficult to believe, there’s an unconfirmed rumour allegedly linking Igboho to the murder of the late Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige.

“My statement was not done in bad faith and it was purely a private conversation. It is surprising how a private conversation held almost four years ago would suddenly turn up in the hands of Igboho.

“To discerning minds, it is obvious that Igboho unlawfully invaded my privacy, bugged a private conversation and inappropriately used the same on several social media platforms.

“Before now, precisely in early March, the same people had bombarded the media space about my heritage. The same people had claimed I was of Tapa, Nupe extraction. In another breath, they alleged that I requested the sum of N20billion from the organisers of the Yoruba Security Conference, held in Ile Ife, Osun state on 29 February, 2024.

“They followed up these dastardly acts by invading and intruding on my privacy. My legal team are presently working on all these.

“However, on the issue of my brother, Tayo Ayinde, let me make it clear here that I repeatedly said that whatever was said was a rumor that couldn’t be substantiated or made public. But for their sinister motives, it was Igboho that bugged my telephone, published and made it public.

“The picture has now become clearer that they resorted to the audio clip blackmail after they failed in their earlier attempt to rubbish my name.

“This was how they abused the Ooni of Ife, His imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the late Alaafin of Oyo,Oba Lamidi Adeyemi and other Yoruba Obas that had done well and contributed a lot to the development and progress of Yoruba.”

Sheath your swords, Yoruba group appeals to Gani Adams, Igboho, others

Foremost Yoruba socio-cultural organization, the Yoruba Alliance Forum (YAF), at the weekend urged the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, the Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly called Sunday Igboho and many others that have been bothered by the recent viral audio content credited to Iba Gani Adams, to sheath their swords and unite to fight the common enemies of Yoruba race.

The leaders of the pan-Yoruba organization made the appeal on Saturday, after reaching out to Iba Gani Adams on the telephone, as part of efforts to ensure peace in Yoruba land.

YAF, in a statement signed by the chairman, Chief Onitolo-Ariyo Adejare, and the secretary, Comrade Adedeji Oluwaseun, described the unity of the Yoruba as the best weapon to fight common enemies.

The YAF chieftains also added that Yoruba sons and daughters, both at home and in the diaspora are worried about the ongoing social media attacks between loyalists of Iba Gani Adams and that of Sunday Igboho.

The group also described those who are sending the viral audio content across the social media platforms as enemies of the Yoruba race, saying that such acts were very libellous because they had intruded into the privacy of Iba Adams and the other person involved in the private discussion.

“This unlawful act can affect the much-needed unity and peace in Yoruba land and can also expose the race to further attacks by the enemies of the Yoruba.

“The issue that transpired between Iba and his former aides in 2015 as well as the audio content generated from a private discussion in 2021 should not be the clog in the wheel of the progress of the Yoruba race.”

Miyetti-Allah seeks Igboho’s arrest over threat to Fulani

The Miyetti –Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), has called on the government to arrest the leader of the Yoruba Nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo (aka Sunday Igboho), over a viral video released to the public, threatening the Fulani community.

They made this known in a statement released by the MACBAN  National President, Baba Othman Ngelzarma.

    Part of the statement reads:

“The attention of the National body of Miyetti-Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has been drawn to the recent video trending in the social media where Sunday Igboho was seeing vomiting fire in the palace of a Yoruba traditional ruler saying that all Fulanis should vacate the Yoruba land.

“He emphatically said he would chase out all Fulani cattle breeders in the South Western part of Nigeria.

“We call on the Commander-In-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), and other relevant security agencies to arrest and prosecute Sunday Igboho for making this unlawful statement that can amount to treason because he is asking for the actualization of Oduduwa nation.

“ If Nnamdi Kanu will be held behind bars for a similar offence, we see no reason why Sunday Igboho will be allowed to go scot-free without being arrested and prosecuted.

“Report from our Oyo State branch further indicates that the group led by Sunday Igboho had allegedly shot one Fulani man to death whose name was Idris Mohammed on Friday the 23rd day of February at Asomo in Iseyin at about 6:pm while coming back from Chief’s Palace where they made the purported video release.

“These misguided utterances pose a grave national security threat. The free movement of such elements of Sunday Igboho without being tamed will only escalate the level of insecurity in the country.

“The community of Fulani cattle breeders living in the southwest or any part of this country should not be held responsible for crimes perpetrated by criminals within or outside their fold. Criminals should be seen as such and dealt with no matter their ethics or religious inclinations.

“MACBAN will not tolerate the unjustifiable treatment of any of its members just because they are Fulani cattle breeders. Nigeria remains a single entity guided by a constitution that gives the right to all citizens to co-exist wherever they desire to live within the ambit of the law.

“Continued silence on this matter without according it the seriousness it deserves in the security structure of the country, will only make us believe that Sunday Igboho is been supported and shielded by the powers that might be in the southwest.

“We also call on all Fulani cattle breeders in the southwestern region to remain law abiding and report all suspicious activities to the constituted authorities within their domain.”

“I welcome the idea, and assure them that I will do my best to checkmate incidence of insecurity provided I receive the backing of the relevant security agencies, Yoruba monarchs and other stakeholders.

“Insecurity and threats precipitated by banditry, herders/farmers clashes, leading to deaths and massive destruction of farmlands have driven away farmers and agric entrepreneurs from farm settlements in Yorubaland.

“We need to flush out criminal elements, who have occupied our forests using the place as launch pads to jeopardize the peace in our communities, towns, villages and amulets. I am ready to lend my support in this regard,” he said.

Igboho to Army: Yoruba nation agitation peaceful

Yoruba nation agitator Chief Sunday Adeyemo (aka Sunday Igboho) has rejected classification of his movement as a threat to security in Southwest Nigeria by the Nigerian Army.

The Army had on Friday reportedly classified his group as a threat to security in the region while analysing the security situation in the country.

The Army’s director of Defence Media Operations (DMO), Maj.Gen. Edward Buba, had reportedly given the classification while addressing reporters on the activities of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) against insurgency between January and December 2023. The military spokesman had claimed that security threats in various geopolitical zones differ, pointing out that the major threat in the Southwest was the Yoruba nation agitators.

But Igboho, in a statement yesterday, said such classification was misleading, mischievous and targeted at blackmailing a peaceful organisation seeking the entrenchment of a better society and good governance.

Igboho to Army: Yoruba nation agitation not a threat to nation’s security

Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Igboho, has rejected classification of his movement as a threat to security in southwest Nigeria by the Nigerian Army.

The Army had on Friday reportedly classified his group as a threat to security in the region while analyzing the security situation in the country.

The Army’s director of Defence Media Operations (DMO) Maj. Gen. Edward Buba had reportedly given the classification while addressing reporters on the activities of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) against insurgency between January and December 2023.

The military spokesman had claimed that security threats in various geopolitical zones differ, pointing out that the major threat in the Southwest was the Yoruba nation agitators.

However, Igboho, in a statement on Sunday, December 31, said such classification was misleading, mischievous and targeted at blackmailing a peaceful organisation seeking the entrenchment of a better society and good governance.

He said it was a misleading classification aimed at giving a dog a bad name in order to hang it.

He restated that the agitation for Yoruba nation is lawful and constitutional, urging the military to focus on routing insurgency in Nigeria instead.

The statement read: “We are conscious of the noble efforts of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to tackle terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of criminalities. But we take exception to the wrong and baseless position of the director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, for identifying the Yoruba nation agitators as major threat to the peace in the South West.

“This is not only far from the truth, but a flimsy excuse, which showcased the failure of the military to tackle the menace of insecurity, which threatened the peace in Nigeria, most especially during the immediate past regime of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Apart from the ignoble and vicious attacks on some states in the North, most especially in the North East, by the Boko Haram terrorists, bandits were controlling some local governments in some parts of the North during Buhari’s administration, collecting levies and other forms of revenues unhindered. The military could not do anything tangible to stop this act of threat against the territorial integrity of the nation.

“Despite colossal sums of money in foreign currencies released to the military to procure arms and ammunition, including fighter jets, our nation still remains under the siege of marauders and rampaging terrorists, killing Nigerians in thousands and turning innocent citizens to refugees in their country.

“Some parts of the South West, namely Osun, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti and Oyo were almost sacked by herdsmen, attacking farmers, killing them and raping their wives and daughters during Buhari’s administration. The security agencies failed to rein in these vicious individuals. Rather, some so-called repentant Boko Haram terrorists were granted amnesty and recruited into the Nigeria Army.

“On July 1, 2021, some agents of the Department of State Security (DSS), backed by the military invaded my residence in Ibadan to kill me in the midnight all because we were agitating for Yoruba nation peacefully. Two of my aides were brutally murdered, while others were fatally injured.

“Security agents also shot dead one of our supporters at Ojota area during a peaceful protest despite the fact that we obtained police permit. As a movement guided by laws of the land, we sued the Federal Government under Buhari on the unlawful invasion of my house and the damage caused by the DSS and secured a judgment against the government up to the Court of Appeal. This judgment, which ordered the payment of compensation running into billions of naira was not obeyed.

“Recent sad stories of the Nigeria Army deploying drones to mistakenly drop off bombs on worshippers, numbering over 85 in Tudun Biri villages of Kaduna State and the latest Christmas eve attack on some communities in Plateau State by bandits where about 200 people, mostly women and children were cruelly murdered are critical issues our military must address.

“Instead they are chasing shadows and wrongfully accusing Yoruba nation movement of threat to peace in the South West. This is just a figment of their own imagination which should not be ignored by discerning Nigerians and other relevant stakeholders.”
