    Defilement: Court rules on ExxonMobil engineer’s bail bid June 27

    Justice Adedayo Akintoye of the Lagos High Court, Igbosere, will on June 27, hear an application for bail filed by Exxon Mobil engineer, James Ikenna Onuoha, who is standing trial for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old girl.

    Last January 14, Chief Magistrate O. A. Ogunbowale of an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court granted Onuoha N2 million bail, with two sureties in the like sum, following his arraignment for the same offence.

    He was charged with willful indecent act, unlawful sexual intercourse, unlawful and indecent deals and having sexual intercourse with an underage girl.

    The case was then transferred to the High Court following advice from the Lagos State Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP).

    On June 21, Onuoha, 42, was arraigned at the High Court on one count of defilement contrary to Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011 filed against him by the state.

    He pleaded not guilty to the charge, following which defence counsel, Mr. Mohammed Adamu, filed the application for bail.

    The defendant is accused of committing the alleged offence on Samuel Amoore Street at Idowu Estate in Oke Ira Nla, Ajah, Lagos last January 4.

    The alleged victim is a niece of the defendant’s tenant.

  • Gardener jailed for threatening employer

    An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos has convicted a 28-year-old gardener, Haruna Buka, of threatening his former employer through a text message he sent to her phone.

    Magistrate O. Kusanu sentenced Buka to one month in Ikoyi Prison, Lagos, without an option of fine, after he admitted sending the message to his ex employer, Joyce Udensi.

    The court accepted his plea of guilt after assessing, among others, Buka’s confessional statement and the complainant’s phone containing the said text, tendered as exhibits by prosecuting police Corporal Mawari Solomon.

    Buka, from Bornu State, was arraigned by the police on a one count charge bordering on ‘threatening with a text message to deal with one Joyce Udensi.’

    Corporal Solomon told the court during facts and sentencing yesterday that Buka was dismissed by his employer after she became dissatisfied with his performance as a gardener.

    He added that Buka allegedly sent her the text warning her not to set a foot outside her house in her life, otherwise “I will show her my way’”

    Buka, who looked remorseful in court, begged for leniency and said he had no intention of carrying out his threat.

    Magistrate Kusanu ordered him to write an undertaking promising not to harm the complainant after his release.

    She sentenced him to one month in jail “in the hope that you would have learnt your lesson.”

    Bus conductor jailed for stealing motorcycle 

    An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos Thursday convicted a 20-year-old bus conductor, Abass Akanbi, of stealing a motorcycle in the Lekki area of Lagos.

    Magistrate O. A. Olagbehinde (Miss) sentenced Akanbi to two months in Ikoyi Prison, Lagos, without an option of fine, after he admitted stealing an unregistered Bajaj motorcycle valued at N127, 000.

    The court accepted his plea of guilt after examining, among others, Akanbi’s confessional statement and the stolen motorcycle tendered as exhibits by prosecuting police CorporalFriday Mameh.

    Akanbi, an on-off bus conductor with no fixed address, was arrested by the police on April 24, alongside Ganiu Amos, the rider of a commercial motorcycle also known as ‘Okada’.

    Both men were arraigned the next day on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing, on Charge No. Q/26/2016, but Amos pleaded not guilty.

    He was later discharged following Akanbi’s confession that he acted alone and “based on the complainant’s withdrawal letter.”

    Corporal Mameh told the court during facts and sentencing Thursday that Akanbi and Amos were apprehended on April 24, around 11:30am at Oba Oyekan Estate, Lekki Phase One, Lagos.

    He said Akanbi, pretending to be a passenger, hired the Okada rider to drop him off at Oyekan Estate.

    He paid for his fare as he alighted but asked the motorcyclist to wait to take him back while he picked something from the estate.

    Akanbi, he added, was apprehended minutes later by security guards at the estate, as he fled on the stolen motorcycle.

    Amos was also arrested while waiting for his passenger.

    The prosecutor added that the stolen motorcycle was the property of one Yakubu Fali, a resident of the estate.

    Pastor charged with cloning bank manager’s cheque

    The police have accused a 63-year-old self-acclaimed clergyman, Samuel Bonny, of cloning an Access Bank manager’s cheque worth N5 million.

    Bonny, whose address was not given, was docked Friday before Mrs. S. K. Matepo of an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, fraud and forgery.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Nicholas Akpene told the court that the defendant and others at large committed the alleged offences on April 26, at 2:00 pm, at Access Bank PLC headquarters, Lagos.

    He alleged that the defendant attempted to defraud Access Bank by presenting a cloned manager’s cheque of N5m for confirmation at the bank.

    Akpene said that the accused forged the cheque and presented it so that it would be acted upon as genuine.

    He said that the offences contravened Sections 363 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The defendant denied the charge.

    Magistrate, Mrs. Matepo, admitted him to bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in the like sum.

    The sureties, she added, must swear to an affidavit of means and must be tax compliant.
    The case was adjourned till May 25 for mention.

    Three docked over alleged contempt of court order

    Three men, who allegedly disobeyed a court order by possessing plots of land already awarded to one Ogunlana’s family, were on Friday charged before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    However, the accused were granted bail in the sum of N500, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

    The trio; Safari Sadiku, 67; Bayo Lawal, 53, and Bakare Ololade, 23, are facing a seven-count charge bordering on conspiracy, unlawful interference, contempt of court and forcible possession.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Steven Molo, told the court that they committed the offences between February and March, at Agunfoye, Igbogbo in Ikorodu, Lagos.

    He said that the accused unlawfully entered into the plots of land belonging to Chief Kolawole Ogunlana’s family with the intent to cause breach of peace.

    Molo said that the accused forcefully took possession of the said land without any claim of right.

    “The land which was recently obtained by Ogunlana’s family through a writ of court,’’ he said.

    He alleged that the accused through their actions conspired to pervert and defeat the course of justice.

    Mole said the offences contravened sections 52, 53,104 (1), 123 (1), 97 (1), 338 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
    The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Magistrate, Mr. Martin’s Owunmi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 each with two sureties in like sum.

    He added that the sureties must be gainfully employed.

    Owunmi adjourned the case to April 22 for mention.

    A 40-year-old man, Taiwo Akinbode, who allegedly impersonated as a police sergeant, was on Wednesday docked before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    The accused of no fixed address is facing a two-count charge of impersonation and unlawful possession of police items.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Feddy Asu, told the court that the accused committed the offences on March 4, at Mile 2, Badagry Expressway.

    Asu also alleged that the accused impersonated a police officer by wearing the Nigerian Police uniform with the rank of a sergeant with a name tag of Taiwo Akinbode.

    “Another complete set of uniform for anti- riot police officer, one police identify card and one certificate of voluntary retirement from the Nigerian Police Force was also found on him,’’ he said.

    Asu said the offences contravened Sections 77, 79 and 328 (d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
    The accused denied committing the offences, while the Magistrate, Mrs A. O. Sholadoye, granted him bail in the sum of N250, 000, with two sureties in like sum.

    Sholadoye ordered that one of the sureties must be a civil servant, and the other a serving police officer.

    She adjourned the case till April 1 for mention.
