  • Seven suspected cultists charged with robbery

    Seven suspected cultists, who allegedly robbed a man of his phone and cash worth N73,000 at knife point, were on Wednesday arraigned by the police at an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    The defendants are: Sunday Stephen, 36; Hassan Terrang, 26; Hassan James, 34; Adelaja Ariyo, 48; Anthony Ojukwu, 33; Bitrus Abednego, 22 and Lucky Anzaku, 20.

    They are standing trial before Mrs. A. M. Davies on an eight-count charge of conspiracy, robbery, stealing and assault.

    Prosecuting Inspector Ruben Solomon alleged that the defendants and their accomplices committed the offences from June 19 to 22, between 8:40pm and 3am at Bush Bar, Banana Island, Ikoyi, Lagos.

    Solomon alleged that the defendants were members of the Arobaga and Aiye cults.

    The court heard that the defendants robbed the complainant, Bright Chimezie, of his Infinix phone valued at N65,000 and a sum of N8,000 at knife point.

    “The defendants, while parading themselves as members of Arobaga and Aiye confraternities, also unlawfully assaulted the complainant with weapons.

    “They were also found polluting the atmosphere by smoking substances suspected to be Indian hemp and made the environment harmful to the health of the public.

    “They also prevented the public from carrying out lawful businesses in the area,” Solomon said.

    According to him, the offences contravened sections 41, 164(a), 170, 287 (1), 296(2) and 411of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Each defendant pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate Davies granted each man N50,000 bail, with two sureties in the like sum among other conditions.

    The case continues on July 31.

  • Six men break into judge’s home, steal N30m jewellery’

    Six men, who allegedly broke into the house of a judge of the Lagos State Judiciary, Justice Mariam Emeya, and stole jewellery worth N30million, were on Wednesday brought before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Mujaudu Alawiye, 59, Achrigbo Sunday, 20, Emmanuel Frank, 23, Akintunde Jude, 28, Adeniji Bashir, 18 and Boniface Nneji, 52 are facing a four-count charge, of conspiracy, breaking and entering, and stealing preferred against them by the police.

    Prosecuting Inspector Edward Abiodun told Magistrate O.O Oshin that the defendants committed the offence at about noon on May 28, at Ajah, Lagos.

    Abiodun alleged that the defendants burgled the judge’s home and carted away several pieces of jewellery.

    The court heard that the stolen items include: four sets of gold bangles, one set of small bangles, one big gold chain, one small gold chain, four gold rings, three sets of gold jewellery, four sets of gold earrings, four sets of gold pendants, two gold hand chains, all valued at N30million, property of the judge.

    Each defendant pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate  Mrs O.O Oshin granted the first and sixth defendants bail, in the sum of N100,000 each and the second, third, fourth and fifth defendants N300,000 bail each, with two sureties each in the like sum, among other conditions.

    The case continues on July 3.

  • Man, 26, ‘defiles’ girl, 10

    An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos on Monday remanded in prison a 26-year-old man, Uchechukwu Okoro, who was accused of defiling a 10-year-old.

    Magistrate K.O. Doja-Ojo made the order after hearing a temporary two-count charge of defilement brought against Okoro by the police.

    The court did not take Okoro’s plea.

    Mrs Doja-Ojo ordered the police to duplicate the case file and send a copy to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

    She adjourned till July 3.

    Earlier, prosecuting Inspector Peace Chukwudi said the defendant committed the offence at about 9:40am on May 16, at Dumping Market area of Lagos Island.

    Chukwudi said the defendant sexually assaulted the girl by penetrating her with his manhood.

    “The defendant sent the girl on an errand and used the opportunity to perpetuate the act,” she told the court.

  • Bus driver jailed three years for stealing

    An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Wednesday sentenced a commercial bus driver, Simon Monday, to three years imprisonment for stealing a bus valued at N750,000.

    Magistrate K.K Awoyinka, convicted Monday, 23, following his plea of guilty to a one-count charge of stealing, under Sections 287 (10) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Before handing down the verdict, Mrs Awoyinka asked the convict if he had anything to say.

    Monday replied: “Please temper justice with mercy. I have learnt my lesson. Please allow me to go and work so that I can pay back the money for the bus.”

    But rejecting his allocutus, Awoyinka said: “You are hereby sentenced to three years imprisonment.”

    Earlier, prosecuting Inspector Oladejo Balogun, who reviewed the facts of the case, said Monday was arraigned on May 21, 2019.

    Balogun said Monday stole a T4 Volkswagen Bus with registration number AAA 470 XR, valued at N700, 000, sometime in February 2017, at Alpha Beach, area, in Eti- Osa Local Government Area of Lagos.

    The bus belonged to the complainant, Mr Obasi Ikechukwu.

    The court heard that Ikechukwu gave the bus to Monday after much pleading on the condition that the driver would remit N7, 000, daily, to the complainant.

    Monday failed to do so. Instead, he fled with the bus.

    The prosecutor said “The convict ran away with the bus and stopped picking the complainant’s calls, he moved out of where he used to live to an unknown place. At a point, when he picked his call, he told the complainant that he was arrested at Badagry road and that was why he couldn’t inform him about the development. He then switched off the phone again, until this year, following which he was apprehended.

    “The bus is what the complainant fed himself and his family. This defendant took the complainant’s source of livelihood from him and caused him so much difficulty, “Balogun stated.

  • Unemployed man jailed for stealing

    An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on Tuesday sentenced an unemployed man, Taye Oluwaseun, to two years imprisonment for stealing items worth N350, 000.

    Oluwaseun, 27, was arraigned by the police on May 2 with a guard, Abdulwaheed Mohammed, 20, on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    Oluwaseun pleaded guilty, while Mohammed pleaded not guilty.

    At the resumed hearing Tuesday, Magistrate K.K. Awoyinka sentenced Oluwaseun after reviewing the facts of the case.

    She sentenced Oluwaseun to one year imprisonment on count one (conspiracy) and one year jail term on count two (stealing).

    “Both sentences shall run concurrently and shall take effect from May 2, when the defendant was arraigned,” Mrs. Awoyinka said.

    The magistrate adjourned Mohammed’s case till June 6 for continuation of the trial.

    Prosecuting Inspector Oladejo Balogun had told the court that Oluwaseun committed the offences at about 2am on May 2, at Plot 1114, Adeola Odeku Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.

    Balogun alleged that both men broke into the premises of a firm, Monaco Security and stole items worth N350, 000.

    The court heard that the items included a Samsung Galaxy phone worth N100, 000, an Infinix phone worth N120, 000 and a Techno phone worth N130, 000, all valued at N350, 000.

    The prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 287(9) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

  • Jobless man jailed six months for touching girl’s breasts

    An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Wednesday sentenced an unemployed man, Ilias Mudashiru, to six months imprisonment for touching a girl’s breast in decently and stabbing her relatives.

    Magistrate F. O. Sasanya convicted Mudashiru, 29, following his plea of “guilty” to a three-count charge of conspiracy, indecent assault and assault occasioning harm.

    The offences contravened Sections 173, 263 (i) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    She sentenced Mudashiru after listening to the review of facts given by prosecuting Sergeant Godspower Ehizoba.

    The Magistrate held: “The defendant is hereby sentenced him to three months in prison on count one (conspiracy), three months on count two (indecent assault) and six months in prison on count three (assault occasioning harm).

    “The sentence will run concurrently.”

    Mudashiru was arraigned for the offences on April 26.

    In his review of the case, Ehizoba told the court that he committed the offences on April 21, at about 8:20am, at Bombata Market, Oroyinyin Street in the Adeniji Adele area of Lagos Island.

    He said Mudashiru conspired with others still at large and indecently asaulted Judith Nwachima by touching her on her breast while she was on her way to a clinic.

    Ehizoba said while Mudashiru was assaulting Nwachima, two of her relatives, Stanely Chinedu and Asoiba Chinedu, came to rescue her but Mudashiru stabbed them on the head, neck and arm with a broken bottle.

     

  • Unemployed man charged with theft of N100,000 clothes

    A unemployed man, Qudus Akinwale, who allegedly stole underwear and other clothing items worth N100,000 belonging to his friend’s neighbours, was on Thursday brought before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Akinwale, 29, of No. 29, Freeman Street, Lagos Island, was arraigned by the police on a one-count charge of stealing before Mrs O. O. Adeshina.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Friday Mameh told the court that Akinwale committed the offence on April 22, at about 11:50am at No. 112, Adeniji Adele Road, Lagos Island.

    He said the clothes belonged to the complainant, Mrs Rebecca Ajala.

    Mameh alleged that the defendant gained entry into the premises on the pretext that he wanted to visit a friend who lived downstairs. He went to the back of the building, took some of the clothes hanging on the line before sneaking into an apartment for more clothes. The apartment owner walked in on him as he was trying out her husband’s shirt and raised the alarm. Akinwale allegedly sped out and ran upstairs where he was caught by other occupants of the building.

    “The complainant, who was sleeping in her apartment, was awakened by the shouts of her neighbours as they pursued the defendant. She came out and found out that the defendant had taken her clothes from the washing line,” Mameh said.

    The offence, the prosecutor alleged, contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Akinwale pleaded “not guilty”.

    Magistrate Adeshina granted him N50, 000 bail, with two sureties in the like sum, among other conditions.

    The case continues on May 15.

  • Court discharges bus driver charged with armed robbery

    An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Tuesday discharged a 36-year-old commercial bus driver, Charles Inibu, charged with robbing a man of two mobile phones while armed with a dangerous weapon.

    The Magistrate, Mrs M. O. Ope-Agbe, discharged the defendant based on  advice by the state Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

    Inibu was arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy  and armed robbery.

    His plea was not taken by the court,  which consequently remanded him pending the advice.

    At the resumed hearing on Tuesday, the magistrate read the DPP’s submission which advised the court to discharge the defendant on the grounds of  insufficient evidence to prosecute him.

    Ope-Agbe, therefore, discharged the defendant.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Cyriacus Nwosu,  told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offences on Feb. 8, at 4.00p.m., on Lekki-Epe Expressway in Eti-Osa LGA of Lagos State.

    He said that the defendant conspired with one other person still at large and robbed a road user of two mobile phones, worth N55, 000.

    The prosecutor said that the defendant, while driving a commercial bus marked AAA 9324 A, armed himself with a screw driver and robbed one Mr Toki Omotayo of Nokia and Samsung phones.

    The alleged offences contravene Sections 297 (2) and 299 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015

  • Travel agent charged with N3.7m Canada Visa scam

    A travel agent, Chinedu Nwosu, who allegedly obtained N3, 700,000, from an applicant under the guise of pretense of procuring him a visa to Canada, was on Tuesday brought before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Nwosu, 43, is standing trial before Magistrate M.F. Onamusi, on a three-count charge of conspiracy, obtaining under false pretense and stealing.

    Prosecuting Inspector Jimoh Joesph alleged that Nwosu committed the offences sometime in January 2018.

    The court heard that Nwosu, alongside accomplices who are still on the run, presented himself as a travel agent.

    He allegedly obtained the sum from a would-be traveller, Ngwu Chukwuma, under false pretence that he would procure a Canadian visa for him, “an information he knew was false.”

    The court also heard that the defendant stole the N3.7m from the complainant.

    According to the prosecutor, the offences contravened sections 411, 314 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Nwosu pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate Onamusi granted him N500, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    One surety must be a blood relation, the second surety must be a cleric,who must have known the defendant for not less than three years, among other conditions.

    The case continues on May 6, 2019.

  • Man docked over threat to publish ex-girlfriend’s nude pictures

    A 30-year-old man was on Monday brought before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, over alleged threat to publish his ex-girlfriend’s nude pictures on social media for her refusal to give him 2000 US dollar.

    Gerald Offordile was also charged for stealing his former girlfriend’s personal items and cash, worth N1.7 million.

    The defendant, who resides at No. 17/19, Matthew Osamiran St., Ologolo Village, Lekki, Lagos, is facing seven-count charge bordering on stealing and threat to publish offensive pictures.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Francis Igbinosa, told the court that the defendant committed the offences between January, 2018 and March, 2019 at No. 19, Ezekule St., Victory Estate, Ago Okota, Lagos, and No. 2a, Ibukun Oluwa-Awoshika Street, Chevy view Estate, Lekki.

    Igbinosa said the defendant had threatened to publish the nude pictures of the Complainant, Chidera Anyanka (his ex-girlfriend), on social media, “if she fails to give him 2000 US dollar within a period of 12 hours.”

    Igbinosa also said that the defendant assaulted the complainant by hitting her head on the wall, adding that the complainant sustained injuries from the alleged assault.

    He said that the defendant entered the house of the complainant and stole one digital camera worth N504,000, one Samsung phone worth N197,000, a washing machine worth N90,180 and cash sum of N300,000.

    The prosecutor also said that the defendant hacked into Anyanka’s US dollar account and stole 1800 US dollar, equivalent of N657,000.

    Igbinosa said the total amount of the items stolen was N1.7 million.

    The defendant, however, denied the allegations levelled against him.

    The Magistrate, Mr B. I. Bakare, granted the defendant N500,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

    He adjourned the case until April 16, for mention.
