Special promotion: Police caution officers against lobbying IGP, PSC

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on Thursday advised its officers and the general public against lobbying for special promotions.

NPF warned that any attempt to influence the promotion process through unofficial means will attract severe disciplinary action.

According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the warning comes amid increasing pressure from some officers seeking special recognition following the recent accelerated promotion of certain personnel.

Adejobi said the recent promotions were not arbitrary but based on a structured reward system established by the police leadership to honour officers who demonstrated exceptional bravery, professionalism, and dedication to duty.

NPF emphasised that only those who met the set criteria benefited from the exercise.

The force also debunked claims by an unnamed online platform alleging that the Force had embarked on indiscriminate promotion.

It described the report as false, misleading, and an attempt to tarnish the integrity of its promotion process.

Adejobi said the Force reiterated its commitment to upholding professionalism and meritocracy and urged officers to remain disciplined and focused on their duties in service to the nation.

The statement reads in part, “The Nigeria Police Force has observed with concern the growing wave of lobbying and unofficial requests directed at the Inspector-General of Police and the Police Service Commission by certain officers seeking special promotions. This surge was triggered by the misinformation being spread by certain media platforms following the recent approval of accelerated promotions for a number of deserving officers who have distinguished themselves through exemplary service.

“The Force wishes to categorically state that these accelerated promotions were not arbitrary but were part of a well-structured reward system, set up by the police leadership, aimed at recognizing officers who have demonstrated outstanding performance, uncommon bravery, professional excellence, and commitment to duty and the officers who benefitted were those who met the standardized guidelines for such accelerated promotion. The recent exercise does not signify the commencement of a general or indiscriminate special promotion scheme.

“In light of recent misleading reports sponsored by a particular online platform suggesting that the Police Force has initiated arbitrary promotions, the Nigeria Police Force firmly cautions the public to disregard such falsehoods. These reports are baseless, misleading, and intended to undermine the integrity of the Force’s promotion process. The NPF remains committed to transparency, merit, and due process in all personnel decisions.

“Furthermore, officers are strongly cautioned against lobbying or attempting to influence the promotion process through unofficial means. Such conduct is unethical, undermines the principles of meritocracy and professionalism, and will attract severe disciplinary action in accordance with extant laws and regulations.

“The Nigeria Police Force reiterates its commitment to a promotion system anchored on integrity, verifiable merit, and honourable service to the nation. Officers and men are hereby urged to remain dedicated, maintain discipline, and continue to discharge their duties with pride and distinction”.

Youth leaders petition IGP over missing Anambra billionaire

The disappearance of young Anambra billionaire, Benjamin Ezemma, since November 12, 2024, has sparked growing concern, with youth leaders across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones calling for urgent government intervention.

Under the aegis of the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders (CONYL), youth groups have urged President Bola Tinubu, urging him to direct the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and other security agencies to launch a thorough investigation into Ezemma’s mysterious disappearance.

In a statement issued on Thursday in Awka and signed by CONYL President-General, Comrade Ibem Goodluck, the group expressed deep distress over the incident.

They described Ezemma, Chairman and CEO of GSS Real Estate and Investment Limited, as not only a prominent businessman but also a devoted father of three children under the age of five.

According to the group, Ezemma was last seen after reportedly honouring an invitation to a hotel by a candidate in the upcoming 2025 Anambra governorship election. Since then, there has been no trace of him.

“The pain inflicted on this family is immeasurable. His young children ask their mother daily, ‘When will we see our father?” the statement read.

This assurance comes as Abia State remained calm without any protest by police retirees, despite a nationwide directive calling for demonstrations over poor welfare.

Speaking in Umuahia during a meeting with representatives of retired police officers across various ranks, CP Danladi, alongside his management team, conveyed the IGP’s message that efforts are ongoing to improve the conditions of retired officers.

He urged retirees to avoid spreading unverified or negative information that could undermine the image and unity of the Force, assuring them that their concerns were being taken seriously at the highest level.

During the interactive session, the retirees presented several pressing issues, including a strong appeal to the IGP to facilitate their removal from the National Pension Commission (PENCOM) scheme, which many of them described as unfavourable.

The Commissioner further commended the relative peace enjoyed in Abia State, attributing it to the collaborative support of the state government, sister security agencies, civil society groups, and other stakeholders.

He encouraged the retirees, as respected senior citizens, to continue to support the police in its efforts to combat crime and maintain public safety in the state.

IGP working towards better pension, retirement benefit, CP Jimoh assures retirees

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has assured retired officers that the leadership of the force was already working with the government to up pensions and other welfare packages of retired personnel.

He gave the assurances at a meeting with a delegation from the National Association of Retired Police Officers of Nigeria (NARPON) at the command headquarters on Friday.

The meeting came on the heels of concerns over the meagre amount retired police officers take home as pension and gratuity after meritoriously serving the country for 35 years.

Recent public outcries by some retired police officers especially a Chief Superintendent (CSP) who made a video narrating how he rejected N3 million that was given to him as gratuity after his 35 years of unblemished service to the country sparked public outrage and reopened national conversations around the welfare and condition of service of police officers.

Although the lingering pension issue was beyond the police as an institution, CP Jimoh enumerated some of the efforts the Inspector General (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun had made, including getting consultants to make a case for the service to the federal government.

Advising them to jettison protest, CP Jimoh assured the retirees that the IGP’s efforts would yield positive outcomes within three to six months.

He told the gathering that the IG had already submitted a document to the federal government canvassing an upward review of the pension of retired officers to allow payment of between 80 to 100 percent of the salaries they earned upon retirement as pension.

The Nation reports that at the moment, retired Assistant to Chief Superintendents of Police (ASP to CSP) take home between N40,000 to N50,000 as monthly pension, while a retired Commissioner of Police (CP) is paid N70,000 monthly. On the other hand, a retired Army Captain gets nothing less than N200,000 as a monthly pension, despite being a far junior in rank compared to a Police Commissioner.

According to CP Jimoh, he was not new to the activities of the association, having been related to them on several occasions in the past as FCT and later Force Public Relations Officer.

He assured them of the command’s commitment to executing projects of the association, reminding them that the police remained their primary constituency and the need to continue to work together for the good of society.

“So we have to meet with you today based on the directive of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olukayode Egbetokun. He directed that all the Commissioners of Police across the country should meet with the National Association of Retired Police Officers of Nigeria to shed light on a lot of things that he’s doing to get the pension better.

“Before I proceed, you have been police officers and you know as much as I do that no IGP has the power to remove the police from the contributory pension scheme. It is a government policy, and no IGP can disobey the law.

“A lot of people at various levels have been attempting to get us out. From the time I was the Force PPRO, the then IGP Ibrahim Kpotun Idris tried to get the police off the scheme. I think even the IGPs before him also tried but couldn’t succeed.

“It was this issue that gave rise to the Police Pension Unit and later the Police Pension Limited in order to take a closer look at what is happening.

“The current IGP has made a lot of submissions to the government seeking a retired police officer to get between 80 to 100 percent of their salary as they retire, monthly. This recommendation is currently before the government.

“Because of the adjustments to the minimum wage last year, the government didn’t take action on the document. They have called the IGP to review the documents to be in line with the new wages.

“Outside that, he has equally taken a lot of bold steps in addressing all the issues that have to do with welfare. So we wanted to assure you that, and equally let you know that protest is not the way forward. Dialogue is always the best way,” he said.

The police boss encouraged the retirees to continue to interface with the service and embrace dialogue, appreciating the selfless services they rendered to the country as police officers.

“This is the time to enjoy the fruit of our labour after serving Nigeria with all your strengths and hearts. We are hopeful that with all the steps that the IGP has taken, things will improve within three to six months, and you will see a lot of changes in the pension scheme of the Nigeria Police Force.

“We want you to equally relay this message to your members, including those who retired recently, that IGP Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun is doing a lot to ensure that he alleviates the suffering of our retirees,” he said.
