IK Ogbonna condemns ‘politics’ in Nigerian cinema industry

Actor IK Ogbonna has spoken out against alleged unfair practices in Nigeria’s cinema industry, claiming that Ini Edo’s film, “A Very Dirty Christmas”, which he starred in, has been subjected to manipulative tactics by cinema houses.

In an Instagram post, Ogbonna stated that showtimes have been shifted, slots replaced, and even air conditioning turned off in halls showing the film, making it challenging for producers to recover their investments.

He condemned these actions, urging cinema houses and producers involved in these tactics to cease, warning that they are hurting the industry.

He wrote, “Politics in Nigeria’s cinema has to stop. This message is for the cinema houses directly and also for the producers who are influencing these politics. We’ve poured our heart, soul, and countless hours into bringing ‘A Very Dirty Christmas’ to the big screen, and it’s unacceptable that we’ve encountered these manipulative tactics.

“Showtimes have been shifted countless times, our slots replaced, and even the air conditioning turned off in halls showing our film. Celebrities doing meet-and-greets have had negative experiences. And let’s not forget the attendees behind the counter who manipulate and influence customers, steering them away from certain films. This kind of bias is unacceptable.

“To the other producers involved in these tactics: you know yourselves. We won’t name names, but it’s time to stop. You’re part of this industry, and by playing these games, you’re hurting it. The politics is as clear as day and night. Stop now so we can have a fair and thriving cinema environment.

“Producers invest heavily and simply want a fair chance to share their work and recover their investments. Let’s put an end to these dirty and ridiculous practices in Nigerian cinema. #FairCinema AVeryDirtyChristmas”.

Ogbonna had also defended the creative rights of artists, arguing that external bodies should not dictate what they can or cannot do.

He cited the existence of the Film Censors Board, which reviews and approves films before release, as an example of the existing regulatory framework.

The actor’s comments come in the wake of threats from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) against Ini Edo over the movie title, which Ogbonna deemed unfair, particularly since the film has been performing well nationwide.

Ogbonna questioned the timing of CAN’s reaction, stating that their silence during the film’s promotional phase was notable.

IK Ogbonna slams CAN over ‘A Very Detty Christmas’ controversy

Actor IK Ogbonna has again defended his colleague, Ini Edo, amid a controversy surrounding the title of her new movie, “A Very Detty Christmas.”

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) had expressed concerns over the title, deeming it offensive and disrespectful to the Christian faith.

Ogbonna expressed disappointment in CAN’s actions, questioning the timing of their objection, given that the movie’s promotions had been running for months without any issues.

He emphasised that artists have creative rights, which should not be dictated by external bodies, and highlighted the role of the Film Censors Board in reviewing and approving films before release.

The actor noted that no one has complained about the movie’s content, which has been widely praised for its creativity.

He argued that asking for a title change at this point would be damaging, both financially and emotionally, to everyone involved.

“As artists, we have creative rights, and those rights should not be dictated by external bodies. That is why the Film Censors Board exists to properly review and approve films before they are released to the public. It is truly disheartening that, despite all due diligence and official approval, we find ourselves in this situation.

“Producing a film takes an enormous amount of money, time, labour, sacrifice, and personal commitment. Promotion for this movie ran openly for over three months. Billboards were raised across the country, commercials aired, banners displayed, and promotional materials printed, running into hundreds of millions of naira. A grand premiere was also held with this same title. During all of this, not a single concern was raised by the Christian Association of Nigeria.

“Now that the movie is already in cinemas, after the work has been done, and it is time for the film to be enjoyed by audiences, this issue has suddenly come up. At this stage, changing the title is not only impractical but extremely damaging, both financially and emotionally, to everyone involved.

It is important to note that no one has complained about the content of the film. In fact, the work has been widely praised for its creativity. This makes it difficult to understand why the focus is now solely on the title, especially when there is no intention to insult or belittle Christmas in any way.

“I believe asking for a title change at this point does not reflect the values of understanding, fairness, and compassion that Christianity teaches. There are many serious issues facing Nigeria and even the Church today, and respectfully, this title should not be one of them.”

Ini Edo had previously responded to CAN’s concerns, stating that art is meant to provoke thought and spark controversy, and that she, as a devoted Christian, would never knowingly disrespect her religion or the essence of Christmas.

Actor IK Ogbonna has expressed strong support for his colleague Ini Edo, who is facing backlash from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) over the title of her new movie, A Very Dirty Christmas.

In a statement on Instagram, Ogbonna said he is deeply disappointed with CAN, saying they had seen the promotions for the movie title for months and chose to remain silent.

He questioned the timing of CAN’s reaction, pointing out that the movie title had been officially approved by the Censors Board and the film was now showing nationwide and doing well.

Ogbonna emphasised that the issue was not about conflict, but about fairness, consistency, and integrity.

He asked how Christian it is to stay silent all along, then speak only when progress has been made, adding that this isn’t about conflict, it’s about fairness, consistency, and integrity.

“TBH! I am deeply disappointed with CAN. You saw the promotions for this title for months and said nothing. The movie title was officially approved by the Censors Board, and we moved forward in good faith.

“Now that the film is out, showing nationwide and doing well, suddenly there’s an issue with the title. How Christian is it to stay silent all along, then speak only when progress has been made? This isn’t about conflict – it’s about fairness, consistency, and integrity”, he wrote.

IK Ogbonna, Rita Dominic defend ‘A Very Dirty Christmas’ film amid CAN criticism

Actor IK Ogbonna and actress Rita Dominic have reacted to criticism from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) over the title of Ini Edo’s new film, ‘A Very Dirty Christmas.’

CAN had described the title as “offensive and disrespectful” to the Christian faith.

In a statement on Instagram, Ogbonna clarified that the title was not meant to mock or disrespect Christianity, emphasising that he, the producer, and director are all Christians.

He explained that the title draws inspiration from the popular Detty December culture and that the film carries deeper messages about love, forgiveness, and self-worth.

Ogbonna, who played the role Frankie in the movie, appealed for the film to be judged beyond its title.

He wrote, “In light of the recent statement by the Christian Association of Nigeria, I feel it’s important to speak from my place as a cast member in A Very Dirty Christmas, where I played the character Frankie.

“Let me be very clear: the title of this movie was never meant to undermine the Christian faith — especially not our faith. I am a Christian. Many members of the cast are Christians. The producer is a Christian. The director is a Christian. At no point was this project created to mock, diminish, or disrespect the sacredness of Christmas.

“I respect the Christian Association of Nigeria and understand the concerns raised. Conversations like this are important. My humble appeal is that we allow the full message of the film — not just the title — to speak for itself,” he said.

Rita Dominic supported Ogbonna, urging Nigerians to watch the film before drawing conclusions.

She wrote, “Artists have the right to creative expressions. It allows them to convey emotions, build worlds that capture the heart of the audience. A Very Dirty Christmas movie produced by Ini Edo and directed by Akay Mason is nothing short of that. I think it’s important to watch the film first before drawing conclusions.

“#AVeryDirtyChristmas is now showing in cinemas nationwide. Go watch with family/friends this holiday, be ready to have a good laugh and be thrilled!

“Congrats once again to the entire cast and crew!”

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has engaged the film’s producers and requested a title modification to prevent offense.

Fame built on clout won’t last – IK Ogbonna

Actor IK Ogbonna has shared insights on today’s fame culture, describing “clout” as the new currency that many people are desperate to spend.

According to him, some individuals use money to buy attention, while others tear down established names or simply become loud to get noticed.

However, Ogbonna warned that this approach to fame is fleeting and lacks substance.

He emphasises that true legacy comes from building fame on a foundation of truth, talent, and consistency, rather than resorting to artificial means.

He noted that the pressure to stay relevant in the digital age can be overwhelming and the same internet that brings fame can also lead to cancellation.

He wrote on his Instagram story: “In today’s world, clout is the new currency, and many people are desperate to spend. Some use money to buy attention, others tear down already established names, and many just become loud for the sake of being noticed.
But the truth is, not all fake is created equal. Forced fame might get you quick recognition and momentary hype, but it rarely lasts.

“There’s no solid foundation, just mine. The pressure to stay relevant becomes overwhelming, and the same internet that crowned you today can cancel you tomorrow. In the end, it’s not the game you gathered that matters; it’s how you gathered it. Fame without purpose fades. But fame built on truth, talent and consistency, that’s legacy”.

IK Ogbonna called the attention of the governing body to regulate late night shooting particularly for those who work tirelessly back and forth, developing weak immune systems.

“We must urgently address the issue of safety in Nollywood. There are several important points I would like to emphasize, but to summarize, it is crucial that every movie set includes a medical department from now on.

“Additionally, we need to seriously consider the impact of late-night shoots, particularly on those who work tirelessly back-to-back. When the body does not receive proper rest, it inevitably begins to deteriorate (fail).

“It is disheartening to say but we only hear of the celebrated we lose, but we tragically lose crew members all too frequently. May this unfortunate loss serve as a catalyst for change, ultimately saving lives,” he wrote.
