  • Cultural splendour at Odun Oba Festival

This year’s Odun Oba Festival in Ikere-Ekiti offered another opportunity for those indigenous to the town at home and in the Diaspora to come together to celebrate their king, the Ogoga, and also rally for the development of their community. The festival witnessed the display of the rich cultural heritage of the town. OUR REPORTER captured the event.

The rich cultural heritage of Ikere-Ekiti was on display on Saturday, July 27, as those indigenous to the town trooped out in large numbers to celebrate this year’s Odun Oba Festival.

The festival, which has grown in leaps and bounds since the Ogoga of Ikere-Ekiti, Oba Samuel Adejimi Adu Alagbado, Agirilala Ogbenuotesoro II, ascended the throne of his forefathers in 2015, has become synonymous with the development of the town and celebration of its illustrious sons and daughters.

This year’s Odun Oba Festival, which attracted Ikere citizens at home and abroad, lived up to its billing as traditional chiefs, honorary chiefs, palace queens (oloris), princes and princesses (omo owas), traditional hunters, market women (iyalojas), various age groups, social clubs, associations and non-indigenes danced to the palace to pay homage to the Ogoga.

The reigning queen, the Eyesorun of Ikere, Olori Olufunmilola Ololade Adejimi Adu, led other palace queens in a colourful dance on their way to pay special homage to the Ogoga. This drew a thunderous applause.

Members of the elite group, Ikere Development Forum (IDF), led by an illustrious son of the soil and legal giant, Chief Wole Olanipekun, which is championing the political, economic and social progress of the town, were present.

It was a celebration of class, colour, pomp and ceremony which the appreciative residents savoured to the fullest while it lasted.

Popular juju musician and a native of the town, Micho Ade, sang the praises of the town believed to be the cradle of valiant men who were not conquered during the 19th Century wars.

Originally christened as Odun Ijesu (New Yam Festival), the festival has grown to be an avenue not only to celebrate the agricultural fertility of the land but also to reason together and work out modalities on how to develop their town.

Leading the personalities who attended this year’s Odun Oba was the Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Bureau of Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Adeniyi Familoni.

The royal guest for the day was the Attah of Ayede-Ekiti, Oba Mumini Adebayo Orisagbemi, a first-class monarch like the Ogoga.

Others in attendance included an illustrious son of the community and Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly. Hon. Funminiyi Afuye; retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Chief Tunde Ogunsakin;  the Otunba of Ikere and oil magnate, Otunba Sola Adewumi and Otun Eyesorun of Ikere, Chief Oluwakemi Sola-Adewumi; the Bobagunwa of Ikere, Chief Dimeji Isiaka, a shipping magnate, Mr. Foluso Alaba; Coordinating Director of Ikere Local Government Area, Mrs. Toba Ojo, Commissioner 1, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mrs. Funke Fajobi and Director-General, Ekiti Bureau of Arts and Culture, Mr. Wale Ojo-Lanre.

The icing on the cake was the homage paid to the Ogoga, whom they acknowledged as the paramount ruler and prescribed authority over the kingdom and its environs and who is also one of the most respected monarchs, not only in Ekiti State but also in Yoruba land.

The Ogoga, who was colourfully dressed in a richly embroidered agbada with his conical shaped crown on his head, intermittently waved his horsetail (irukere) to his subjects to acknowledge their homages.

One of the features of the Odun Oba was the parade of the crowns worn by the Ogoga and other paraphernalia of his office which confer prestige on his throne.

The Ogoga had every cause to rejoice because his ascension to the throne has been a harbinger of good fortunes to Ikere. He single-handedly built an eye-catching modern palace which has become a tourists’ attraction within and outside Ekiti.

The Ikere king has attracted more corporate organisations that have established their presence in the town, thereby boosting its economy and creating jobs for the teeming youths. But like Oliver Twist, the Ogoga is yearning for more, which explains why he is calling on his subjects and non-indigenes from within and outside Nigeria to invest in his domain.

A native of the town that came from London, the United Kingdom for the Odun Oba, Princess Sayo Adenle, said Odun Oba has become a rallying point for all well-meaning sons and daughters to lift their community to greater heights.

Princess Adenle said: “Odun Oba represents a veritable platform through which we contribute to the development of Ikere. The town is witnessing progress. We should all rally round our revered king, the Ogoga, to continue this good work. We will work hard to make Odun Oba an internationally- recognised tourists’ attraction.

“I was here last year and I am here again. We will continue to work harder to ensure development of Ikere. I want to call on all Ikere sons and daughters to come together and contribute our quota to lift our town and develop it in all spheres of life.”

Sola Adewunmi said: “Let us pursue Ikere’s progress with joint efforts. Those who assist the town will continue to be specially recognised and honoured.

Speaking on behalf of IDF, Mr. Femi Ekundayo said: “We take pride in the heritage of our forebears, especially in the fact that we were never defeated or conquered in wars. We appreciate the Ogoga for the rare privilege given to the IDF to reconcile parties disturbed by age-long rivalries.

“Our report will soon be ready and its tone is positive.”

Isiaka said: “The cultural value is very important, especially for the younger generations to understand our culture and get to know where we are coming from; the beginning in terms of our values and behavioural patterns. The turnout at the festival is very impressive. We do not have security issues.

“One of my roles is to propagate the values of leadership to our community. The Kabiyesi has been my mentor for many years and he has got a lot of leadership capacities. I also try my best to contribute to community development. This was why my wife and I built the hall of fame last year.”

Retired AIG Ogunsakin, who is also the Basorun of Ikere, hailed the developmental strides of the reigning Ogoga which he described as unprecedented in the history of the ancient town.

He said: “This programme (Odun Oba) is a celebration of the progress and unity of Ikere and I am happy to be part of it.

“Since the king, Oba Agirilala II of Ikere Kingdom came on board; we have been witnessing progress and prosperity.”

The Ogoga, who acknowledged the unflinching support he had enjoyed since mounting the throne in 2015 also expressed satisfaction with the accomplishments of the citizes in their various fields of human endeavour.

He said the task to make Ikere great had just begun, urging his subjects not to relent in working hard to positively turn around the fortunes of their hometown to the level of great Yoruba towns and cities.

Delivering his speech, Oba Alagbado appealed to Ikere citizens not to be divided by politics, saying the development of the kingdom is a task that must be accomplished.

The royal father vowed that he would never be distracted in his commitment to ensure the fulfilment of his desire to take Ikere to greater heights in the comity of Yoruba towns and to ensure that its citizens rise to the pinnacle of their endeaavours and bring the benefits home.

The Ogoga said: “Ikere community has witnessed a mix bag of everything in the past 12 months. There was the tension which arose from the Governorship and Presidential elections that sort of polarised the whole kingdom, pitting brothers against brothers. We also experienced scourge of thuggery, lawlessness and youth cultism.

“However, in spite of these, we have reasons to also celebrate. During the same period, we witnessed the elevation of our sons and daughters to the enviable status of professorship in various institutions worldwide. We also witnessed The approval by the Senate of Nigeria, the appointment of one of our sons to a very important position in the country.

“Ikere has a glorious history that is the envy of many kingdoms. Our ancestors, in their wisdom, arranged the administration of the kingdom in such a balanced way that ensured unity. It was this unity that served as the strength which resulted in the successes achieved in those days of internecine wars where Ikere remained undefeated and unconquered till date.

“At present, despite our efforts to ensure full integration, some egocentric individuals for their own selfish and self-aggrandisement, have been making spurious, strange and bizarre stories which are all falsehood in the attempt to rewrite and change our history to suit their evil plans. We, therefore, depend on God Almighty to vindicate us and arrest these evildoers because we stand on the truth.

“We must eschew hatred and bitterness in our politics. We cannot all be in one party but our goals and objectives for Ikere, our common heritage, must be for her progress. Therefore, we must keep that in mind regardless of party loyalty. We need love and peace among us.

“While we commend families who are known for good deeds that have brought glory to Ikere Kingdom, do not let your families be known to bring rebuke or shame to Ikere. Guide them to become professors, honourable men and women and achievers and not thugs and Yahoo fraudsters.”

  • College workers pass vote of no confidence on institution’s governing council

THE workers at the College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State, yesterday passed a vote of no confidence on institution’s governing council.

The workers, under the aegis of Senior Staff Union in Colleges of Education, Nigeria (SSUCOEN), Ikere-Ekiti branch, alleged that Chief Afolabi Ojuawo-led Governing Council had engaged in alleged actions, which were capable of destroying the institution.

The union described the alleged unlawful disengagement of five Senior Staff without any justification as  ‘outright illegality’, saying such decision negates the principle of justice and fairness.

They gave the governing council a seven-day ultimatum within which to rescind its decision and failure to comply will propel the union to embark on industrial action and litigation process.

A communique made available to reporters in Ado-Ekiti yesterday by the Chairman Mr. Oluwole  Olusona stated that the decision was reached after the union congress held on April 9, 2019 at the College Hall.

The union said there was no reasonable justification for their premature retirement, other than their positions had been scrapped on the recommendation of the visitation panel constituted by the state government.

They said there was nothing unconstitutional in the promotion, saying the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), had in 2016, elongated the Administrative Officer and Accountant’s cadres to level 15 and which was approved for implementation in the college by the then governing council.

The union added that the affected staff were consequently promoted to the position of Senior Deputy Registrars and Senior Deputy Bursar.

The affected members of staff were in the rank of Senior Deputy Registrar and Senior Deputy Bursar and they included R.S Omole, Mrs. B.S Momoh, J.O Onifade, Mrs F.A Adeusi and Francis Adebayo.

It called on the government to investigate the frivolous spending of 34m on sitting allowance and feeding within two months by Ojuawo-led Governing Council in spite of the 11 and five months unpaid cooperative deduction and salary arrears respectively.

The union, however, expressed worries that the best hands and highly experienced staff had just been sent packing without committing any offence.

But, the Acting Provost of the College, Dr. Victor Kehinde, said the Governing Council had not done any illegality but acted based on the report of the visitation panel, which was accepted by the government and later released as white paper.

Dr. Kehinde said the white paper recommended that those in the position of the same Deputy Registrar and Senior Deputy Bursar should be scrapped because the position does not exist.

“Dr. Fayemi in an attempt to reposition the institution inaugurated a visitation panel in November 2018 to look at certain things in the college.

“And people submitted petitions, including members of the Senior Staff Union, which were carefully considered.

“And the panel came out with that recommendation scrapping the positions.

“So, if they came out with recommendations and government accepted them, then, the new council had no choice than to implement it,” he said.

An Ekiti State High Court has sentenced one Alonge Ajayi to death by hanging after being found guilty of armed robbery.

Justice Lekan Ogunmoye who handed down the sentence held that the prosecution has proved the case against the convict beyond the reasonable doubt.

The judge ruled that Ajayi, 22, by the commission of the crime offended Section 402 of the Criminal Law Code Cap C16 Vol 1 Laws of Ekiti State 2012.

According to the charge sheet, Ajayi, who was a member of a three-man robbery gang, had on 30th October, 2016 robbed three worshippers who were coming from the church in Ikere Ekiti.

The victims, who testified in court, said the gang who rode on a motorcycle followed them into their compound and pointed gun at them.

Ajayi, who was led in evidence by his counsel, Mr. Kayode Oyeyemi, did not call any witness in the course of the trial.

“The accused is hereby sentenced to death by hanging until he be dead. May God have mercy on your soul.”

  • Fayemi warns against illegal recruitments at Ekiti College

Ekiti State Governor-elect, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has warned the management of the College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti, against illegal recruitment of new workers to create problems for the incoming administration.

Fayemi warned the management led by the College Provost, Prof. Mojisola Oyarekua, to resist an alleged directive to carry out massive employment of cronies of Governor Ayo Fayose in violation of due process.

A statement on Monday signed by Director, Fayemi Media Office, Wole Olujobi, wondered why an administration that has failed to employ one single individual in the last four years now want to employ thousands in the college and other institutions with few days left in office.

The statement said “it is dangerous to erect political structures in non-partisan institutions of government, warning that the incoming administration will not inherit institutions that will be threatened by political cleavages.”

The statement said: We want to caution the management of the college to stay clear of the contrived sabotage mission by Governor Ayodele Fayose to cripple the administration of the Governor-elect, Dr Kayode Fayemi, from the outset.

“There are similar plans by Fayose for other government’s agencies and institutions where he plans to dispense favours to only members of his party; we want to warn that political consideration in public recruitment scheme is illegal and will be so treated on assumption of office.

“We are aware of a long list of cronies of Governor Ayodele Fayose who are forced on the management of the College of Education and waiting to be employed in their large numbers on the orders of the governor.

“We wish to caution the management of the College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti, and other institutions of government on the danger of conniving with an administration that has refused to employ just one man in about four years to now choose to embark on mass recruitment of supporters for the purpose of crippling the incoming administration at a time that Fayose’s administration is owing backlog of salaries with no hope of payment till the end of his administration.

“We hereby alert the people of Ekiti State to this clear act of sabotage which the management of the college is trying to execute on behalf of Governor Fayose to intentionally cripple the smooth running of the administration of the college when the new administration comes on board, particularly coming at the time that subvention to the college has not been paid for a long while research and capital funding has been abandoned.

“The recruitment becomes more illegal, as the beneficiaries of the exercise are mainly Fayose’s cronies who he wants to compensate after deceiving them for three years.

“We do not believe in political affiliation in the consideration of people for employment, therefore, what is going on in the College of Education is clearly a political exercise in a non-partisan setting, and to that extent, the exercise is political and, therefore, illegal because it is wrong to turn the college to the enclave of one political party.

“In the last dispensation, Fayemi engaged Ekiti people in social security scheme, Youths in Commercial Agricultural Development (YCAD), Volunteer Corps, EKSTMA and Peace Corps, among other schemes, based on merit and without consideration for political leaning.

“This is the way to go and we hope to continue on this path when we assume office to fill all necessary vacancies and create new job opportunities for all Ekiti people based on merit irrespective of political affiliation.

“We therefore advise the management of the college and other institutions of government to stay clear of the sabotage mission by Fayose and strive to ensure that the present status quo of salary payment default is resolved in favour of the hard-working workers, teaching and non-teaching staff, by paying all their salary arrears and other entitlements, including payment of subventions and capital spending,  instead of embarking on political patronage in appointments that will further worsen crises for our institutions.”

Everyone with a permanent voter card (PVC) would be allowed to vote even if the card reader malfunctions or fails verify the PVC, according to Independent National Electoral Commissioner (INEC) National Commissioner Prof Anthonia Simbine.

She said such an incident would be recorded in the register and the person would then be allowed to vote although there is no incidence form being used.

The INEC chief said there was no cause for alarm, as every registered voter would exercise their franchise as Eleka did.

“Where there are issues with the smart card reader, our ICT support will step in. The card has a chip which works with the smart card reader.

“If per chance, the chip has a problem, it may not be able to read. I’m not saying that is what happened (in the case of Prof Eleka).

“We’re not using the incident form. The incident will be reported on the manual register. It will be written down that it (the PVC) was not captured. But such a person is going to vote,” she said.

Simbine said those still on queue after 2pm will be allowed to vote before counting begins.

Voting has ended in some units, with counting soon to begin.

  • ‘My removal by Fayose was Injustice’

The immediate past Chairman of the Governing Council of the College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti, Prof. Babatope Alo, has described the announcement of his sack on air as an “act of injustice.”

Alo revealed that he has not been officially communicated through a letter or electronically since his sack was announced last week on the Broadcasting Service of Ekiti State (BSES).

He disclosed that a member of the Governing Council, Mr. Gboyega Akinola, resigned in protest against the way and manner he was treated by the state government.

The Usi-Ekiti born Professor of Applied Biology said he served the college diligently, moved the institution forward and recorded achievements during his tenure.

The achievements, according to him, include stability in college administration, increase in internally generated revenue, improvement in staff welfare, reviving of college farm, establishment of printing press, among others.

Alo, who spoke on Monday for the first time on his removal, said he was happy leaving office with his name, image and integrity intact as he was not accused of any act of fraud, embezzlement and abuse of office

While noting that he had no premonition of his sack from office, he said Governor Ayo Fayose had accused him of fraternizing with his enemies saying he did not know the enemies the governor was referring to.

Alo said: “I had no premonition about my removal except for a time the governor called me accusing me of fraternizing with his enemies and I wonder who could that enemies be.

“He was just talking to me that I was fraternizing with his enemies and he was just giving me a threat and I see no reason for that.

“I took the removal in good faith but definitely, it was an act of injustice and very embarrassing. If not that people are very much aware of my reputation, they would have thought that I did something bad.

“Everybody that knows me that I am a very credible person and I couldn’t have been involved in any act of misdemenour, that was my saving grace.

By not giving any reason, by just hearing it on air that my appointment has been terminated, who will feel comfortable with that? My integrity is intact, my name and reputation were not soiled.

“Because of my decision to come down here and serve, I am financially poorer because I lost a lot of things for coming to my home state to serve.

“I am still a professor at the Federal University of Technology, Yola. You can imagine me coming at my own expense because of the love I have for my state. Removing me without any just cause was an injustice.”

  • 500 PDP, ANPP members join APC in Ekiti

500 PDP, ANPP members join APC in Ekiti

Over 500 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) members on Thursday in Afao Quarters, Ikere-Ekiti joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) in support of the governorship ambition of an aspirant, Mr. Kola Alabi.

The defectors said Alabi has touched the lives of the people of the community through his philanthropic gestures and offers hope for the downtrodden if he becomes governor.

They also identified APC as a party that has the interest of the people at heart having a better manifesto to transform Ekiti and better the residents’ standard of living.

Addressing the gathering after moving to APC, Mr. Tope Agbanigo, and former PDP Vice Chairman in Afao Ward described Alabi as a God-sent leader who is tested and competent for the office of governor.

He explained that Alabi provided scholarship to thousands of students in the ward and Ikere as a whole while also paying electricity bills for the people and provided transformers in the town.

The ANPP National Secretary, Mr. Ojo Aruleba, who hails from the ward, also defected to the APC at the rally.

Addressing the gathering, Alabi, has said the party will respect the leadership guide of the APC National Leader of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, in selecting a credible candidate that can defeat the PDP in the 2018 governorship poll.

Alabi, however, clarified that the guide expected from Tinubu is to ensure a conduct of a free, fair and credible primary that will produce a sellable candidate based on the principle of zoning, to inject equity, justice and fair play into Ekiti politics.

He said: “We believe in Asiwaju Tinubu’s leadership. He worked hard to earn it. But I know that being a leader he will support a popular candidate to fly our party’s flag rather than imposition.”

Alabi said the party can only win the 2018 governorship elections if the primary is transparent and if zoning is embraced.
