    Ikoyi Club lauds Zenith Bank over Tennis Grand Slam

    The 2024 Zenith Bank Ikoyi Club tennis Grand Slam will see 93 players fighting for honours in the competition which is in its ninth  year.

    Speaking  during a press conference to herald the competition, the vice-chairman of the Ikoyi Club tennis section, Evans Sunday Uko, who stood in for the chairman, Diran Famakinwa, said the tennis section was happy to renew partnership with Zenith Bank, the sponsors of the Grand Slam.

    According to him, Zenith Bank has shown consistency while also calling on other private individuals to come out to sponsor the event. adding 93 players registered for the Grand Slam, which promises to be more interesting from today.

     “I want to use this opportunity to appreciate Zenith Bank, they have been there for us for more than nine years,” he said. “I call on private organisations, individuals and others to come and support us because through that, you can be sure of a lot of visibility for your product.

    “Apart from sponsoring the Grand Slam, Zenith Bank has been placing advert at the club and they just renewed their sponsorship for another three years with improved offers.

     “This year, we have 93 players taking part in different categories ranging from men singles, lady singles, veteran, super veteran and team events.”

    Meanwhile, the Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Bank, Ebenezer Onyeagwu, said the financial institution was happy to continue with the partnership with the Ikoyi Club Tennis section ;

    He said: “As an organisation, we will continue to invest in things that will help our customers.

     “We have been investing in sports and we are happy to continue our partnership with the Ikoyi Club tennis section and other parts of the club. We look forward to exciting tournament in the Grand Slam and hope the best player wins.”

    Ikoyi Club Easter Holiday Tennis Clinic excites kids

    Holidaying kids have expressed their excitement at taking part in the 2024 Ikoyi Club Easter Holiday Tennis Clinic and Championship which is in its third day.

    The kids between the ages of 7-16 years are making the best use of their out-of-school period  at the programme and they have been going through the latest techniques in the sport by seasoned coaches at the elite recreational centre.

    Khalid Mohammed has been one of the top performers in the developmental programme and he was fully delighted to be featuring again this year.

     “I am happy to be playing again this year; I am the champions of the Under-7 and the Under-9 categories and I am playing in the Under 13-category now. I want to win again because I have been looking forward to this tournament since the start of this year,” he said after the first day of training which featured 55 participants.

    Jaden Atebe is also identified as a star prospect following his scorecard in the past few editions on the programme and he want to improve further in his game.

    He declared: “This is one of my best period of the year because I love tennis so much. My parents are supporting me and I am determined to be a star of the game in the future.”

    Also speaking in an exciting tune is Oluwamayomile Orungbeja, the reigning champion in the under 13 category and she said she is happy to be back in the programme which she said has helped her develop her game.

    “We were put through lots of things in the past and those things I learnt have helped me improve my game. I feel great to be playing tennis at this holiday period,” she said.

    The five-day programme which is in four categories will end on Saturday with lots of goodies for kids who distinguished themselves.

    Ikoyi Club holds  Easter Holiday Junior tennis clinic

    The annual Ikoyi Club 1938 Easter Holiday Junior Tennis Clinic starts tomorrow  at the tennis courts of the elite club.

    Tennis players of club members are expected to be on parade between  April 2 and April 6 for this event sponsored by Leadway Assurance.

    Captain of the Tennis section, Azubuike Okonkwo, told newsmen at the weekend that all was set for the Easter fiesta tennis Clinic/ Tournament.

    Okonkwo stated that the kids participating in this competition would have so much fun in this edition.

    “We are excited the kids would be coming together to learn about the game while they will also enter into competition towards the end to round off the clinic,” the captain said.

    Assistant Head Coach, Christian Agbim, said that the Tennis Section Chairman, Diran Famakinwa, is so passionate about this clinic for the kids.

    Agbim said all the coaches were set to give the kids the current rudiments in the game.

    In this edition which is the 6th  in the series, the kids will be competing in four different categories in the boys and girls cadre respectively.

    There will be clinic and tournament for 5-7 year-old boys and girls, 8-10 year-old boys and girls, 11-13 year-old boys and girls and 14-16 year-old boys and girls.

    Lady Captain, Mrs. Oluwawemimo Ogunsanya, said the event would produce future champions for the country.

     “The target is to catch them young and now we are hopeful some future champions can come from this clinic/tournament. We expect to have fun with the kids in the spirit of Easter,” she said.

    Squash players and enthusiasts have commended the idea of having a sports shop at the Squash Section of the Ikoyi Club. The Squash Section of the elite club was under the spotlight last week with the commissioning of a sports shop.

    The Commissioning of the sports shop – a squash-only equipment store – was done by Mrs. Folashade Ambrose with support of Ikoyi Club 1938 Chairman, Tafa Zibiri-Aliu.

    It is under the Lifestyle arm of Rehnco Sports Academy (RSA), a foremost squash outfit, which has been at the forefront of squash development in Nigeria,

    Former President of the Nigeria Squash Federation, Dr. Kayode Roberts, commended the idea saying it brings the game close to the players at the club.

    “Mere having a shop in the section will increase the enthusiasm of players. You can easily get one or two items needed to play without the stress of going far to purchase such item.”

    Similar opinion were shared by Dele and Alex Akalugwu. Prat, who is a coach said the sports  shop has added colour and glamour to the section.

    “It looks so beautiful and this will definitely help in the growth of the sport at the club as it makes the game easier to play. We really love this concept of having a shop that caters for the game right in the section,” Pratt said.

    Founder/CEO Rernco Sports Academy, Rerhe Idonije, says the idea is to make squash more appealing and accessible to play at the club while also assuring of availability of high quality squash items.

    British billionaire acquire 25 percent stakes  in Man United

    INEOS chairman Jim Ratcliffe has  reportedly agreed a deal to buy 25 percent of Manchester United for about £1.25 billion ($1.6 billion) and will take control of the Premier League club’s football operations, it was announced on Sunday.

    The British billionaire, 71, will also provide $300 million for future investment into the club’s Old Trafford stadium.

    A club statement said: “Manchester United announces that it has entered into an agreement under which chairman of INEOS, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, will acquire 25 percent of Manchester United’s Class B shares and up to 25 percent of Manchester United’s Class A shares and provide an additional $300 million intended to enable future investment into Old Trafford.

    “As part of the transaction, INEOS has accepted a request by the board to be delegated responsibility for the management of the club’s football operations.”

    Ratcliffe said he wanted to see struggling United “back where we belong, at the very top of English, European and world football”.

    Grange, St. Saviours win Ikoyi Club inter-school swimming

    Grange School, Ikeja and St. Saviours’ School, Ikoyi,  were winners at the 2023 Ikoyi Club 1938 Inter-School Swimming Meet.

    Grange took top position in the Secondary Schools’ category with Children International School (CIS) in second and British International School finishing third while St. Saviour won the Primary School category which had CIS in second and Corona School in third position.

    The highpoint of the one-day event which had  54 events competed for by 380 participants  representing 36 schools across all the local governments in Lagos state was the top six which had top finishers in the categories competed against one another.

    A total of 366 swimmers participated in 701 races  with 88 swimmers  winning at least a medal while 26 of them won three medals each; 21 won two and 41 won one medal each

    Chairman Ikoyi Club 1938, Tafar Zubir Aliyu commended the students for their sportsmanship conducts and expressed delight at the level of support to the programme by the parents and schools.

    He pledged that Ikoyi Club will continue to be at the forefront of talents development in sports pointing that the club has in no small measure contributed to swimming development in Nigeria.

    Mr. Fatayi Babatunde Williams, a two-time president of the Nigeria Swimming Federation and the current vice president of African Aquatics calls on other clubs in the country to emulate Ikoyi Club stressing that an expanded talent pool would enhance Nigeria’s potential to be among the leading forces in swimming globally.

    Chairman, Ikoyi Club Swimming Section, Ikedichi Kanu advocated  for a swimming league which he pointed would bring out the very best of swimming talents in the country.

     “With what Ikoyi Club is ding in terms of developmental programmes in swimming, it won’t come as a surprise that in the next coming Olympics. Nigeria will not only be having representatives at the Games but would be contesting for medals as well,”  Kanu said.

    Games captain Akinbulejo Onabolu commended Flutterwave and Cadbury for their support.

  • Ikoyi Club fetes children at Easter

    It was fun galore on Easter Monday as Ikoyi Club 1938 threw a party for children of club members at the club premises in Ikoyi, Lagos.

    The event which took place at the club lawn was tagged ‘Easter happy holiday’ and featured bouncing castle, fun, games, DJ mixes, Gifts and lots more.

    While the party for children between ages one and 10 held on the club lawn, the teens between the ages of 11 and 19 had a separate party inside the fun galore (arcade center).

    There were activities such as video games for the kids and MC Multi involved the teens in a game called ‘Guess The Artist’s Name,’ where the intro of a song by a particular artiste was played and the teens were asked to guess who sang the song. There were other side-attractions such as ‘Instagram Cut Out’ photo-shoots, Balloon game, Mummy game and a game called ‘Untie The Cloth’.

    Some young artistes like Big Dex, Naira and Call Me Kid rapped on selected tunes after which the floor was open to everyone to dance. The teens were also introduced to book club and taught how to access catalogues for reading of books, magazines, newspapers, and journals in order to inculcate reading habits.

    According to the Club’s Entertainment Chairman, Femi Olufade, “It is an annual event that we organize for members of the club to celebrate Easter. We give food, catch funs, play games and watch movies, and also which is an environment to stay on a day like this, the kids and adults catch lots of fun that most of them would not want to leave.

    As part of its year activities, Ikoyi Club 1938 on Friday, held its Elders Day, to celebrate senior citizens of the club.

    The event which held on the club’s lawn attracted had the elders unwinding, backslapping and having fun like teenagers. They enjoyed the mellow afternoon on the club’s lawn with fine dining and wining, coupled melodious live music from Mr Tunde Shoolanke and The Eagles Band. The elders also got a souvenir of wax print fabrics.

    “The Elders day is for elders,” said Mr Babatunde Akinleye, the Chairman, Ikoyi Club 1938 while delivering his speech.

    “It is to spoil you, to entertain you, to look after you and to reward you for the many years that you have been members of this club. That is why we don’t have high table for committee members or anybody here today.

    “I just want to say that we wish you a very happy new year and that’s on behalf of the trustees, the general committee and the members of Ikoyi Club 1938. We pray in the year 2018, it will be a better year for you and for all of us.”

    Juju maestro, King Sunny Ade and singer Omawumi on Friday thrilled members and guests of the Ikoyi Club 1938 at its ‘International Nite’ which held at Ikoyi Club, Lagos.

    The event was part of activities lined up to celebrate the Yuletide and usher in 2018.

    With the club lawn lit up in a canopy of shimmering white lights and boxes of speakers and musical equipment strategically placed, the mood for a fun-filled night was set.

    And kicking off the all night event was Omawumi, who began her performance at about 9:45pm.

    Playing with a live band, Omawumi sang songs from her latest album, ‘Timeless’. Song after song, she wowed the audience with her musical prowess.

    At a point, Omawumi who is also a member of the club, took off her show and came to the audience, taking time to sing and dance with some people. By the time she returned to the stage and rounded off her performance with ‘Who I Go Ask,’ she got a rapturous applause.

    The live sound and the choice food and drinks available made waiting for KSA worthwhile.

    And by the time he got on stage with a retinue of his band boys, it became obvious why he is great. Belting out some of his popular songs, he interjected them with praises of some of the dignitaries present.

    Some of them were Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, Babatunde Akinleye, the club’s Chairman, Dr Adekunle Wright, the Vice Chairman, as well as other dignitaries.

    Earlier, the club’s GM/CEO, Tunde Orungbeja, said that this year, the club planned more activities to cater for ‘different demographics’ of its members than previous years.

    “We’re trying to have everybody enjoy the festive period also by intermingling,” he said.

    “So, this year, we’ve tried to bring about a fusion of both the old and the young, the middle-aged and everybody through the activities.”

    The club started activities for its Year-End Fiesta 2017 with the lighting of the Christmas lights on December 1.

    Other activities lined up include the children’s Christmas party on Sunday, December 17, X-mas Dance with a DJ/Live Band on Friday, December 22 and a Christmas carol by a choir on Sunday, December 24.

    There will be the Chairman/Staff Party, New Year Bash/Turn Up which takes place on Thursday, December 28 and Friday, December 29 respectively.

    Also, the Club will host an Elders’ Day Party on January 5, 2018 while the ‘Christmas Light Switching Off’ takes place on Monday, January 8, 2018 to bring the fiesta to an end.
