    KSA, Omawumi to perform as Ikoyi Club lights up for Christmas

    In a continuation of its annual tradition of celebrating the yuletide, Ikoyi Club 1938 has lit up for Christmas.

    Performing the ritual, the club’s Chairman, Babatunde Akinleye, switched on the Christmas lights at about 7:20pm on Friday at the club’s lawn in Ikoyi, Lagos to commence its Year-End Fiesta 2017.

    The line-up of activities include an ‘International Nite’ on Friday, December 8, where Juju music maestro King Sunny Ade and Omawumi will play on the same stage, the children’s Christmas party on Sunday, December 17, X-mas Dance with a DJ/Live Band on Friday, December 22 and a Christmas carol by a choir on Sunday, December 24.

    Other events are the Chairman/Staff Party, New Year Bash/Turn Up which takes place on Thursday, December 28 and Friday, December 29 respectively.

    And in recognition of the role of veterans of the Ikoyi Club 1938, an Elders’ Day Party on January 5, 2018 will honour them while the ‘Christmas Light Switching Off’ takes place on Monday, January 8, 2018 to bring the fiesta to an end.

    Speaking to The Nation, the club’s GM/CEO, Tunde Orungbeja, said that this year, the club planned more activities to cater for ‘different demographics’ of its members than previous years.

    “We’re trying to have everybody enjoy the festive period also by intermingling,” he said.

    “So, this year, we’ve tried to bring about a fusion of both the old and the young, the middle-aged and everybody through the activities.”

    Present at the event were Mr Sunday Wusu (Badminton Chairman), Mr Kenneth Ufere (Other Games Chairman), Miss Mary Orubo (Entertainment Committee) and Mr Tunji Tiamiyu (Entertainment Committee) and other members and guests of the club while TSoul Band provided live music.

    Ikoyi Club 1938 has lit up for Christmas.

    56th Lagos Amateur Golf championship tees off

     

    Ikoyi Club 1938 in partnership with First Bank of Nigeria Limited is set to hold the 56th edition of the Lagos Amateur Golf Championship.

    The prestigious tournament, which is the foremost golf tournament in the country, is scheduled to tee off Saturday at the lush greens of Ikoyi Club 1938 and this year’s event will mark the 56th anniversary of the championship, making it the oldest golf tournament in West Africa.

    The 36 hole competition is expected to be played over two days and will round off with a grand finale and awards dinner on Sunday, November 19, 2017.

    According to FirstBank’s Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Adesola Adeduntan, the bank is proud to have hosted the championship for 56 years as the Bank understands the importance of sports in the development of healthy bodies and sound minds and reiterated the bank’s commitment to the grow of golf in the country.

    “As new talents are nurtured through this tournament and experienced ones made stronger, we assure all golf enthusiasts that we will continue to seek and explore new ways of elevating golf and producing even better golfers, Adeduntan added.

    One of the highlights of this year’s tournament would be the participation of Alex Rowland, an European Professional Golf Association (PGA) professional player. 16 year old golfing prodigy, Georgia Oboh is also expected to compete.

    Rowland, the 2016 PGA North Region Captain will engage children and adults who are interested in the game in the open golf coaching clinic which will provide hands-on coaching on bunker play, chipping, putting, and full swing among other skills required to master the game.

    The annual tournament is open to all amateur golfers who are members of registered golf clubs with handicap of 14 or below and will attract over 250 golfers from elite clubs across the country.

    Day 1 will see first round tee-off starting in the morning on Saturday. Other activities on the day include the professional coaching clinic, and “Longest Drive Beat the Pro Challenge” competition. Sunday will start with guest players being invited to participate in the tournament followed by the final round of the Championship.

  • Ikoyi Club begins celebration today

    President Goodluck Jonathan is expected to flag off the 75th year anniversary celebration of the Ikoyi Club 1938 which begins today in Lagos.

    The Vice Chairman of the club, who doubles as the Chairman of the Anniversary Sub-Committee, Yomi Orenuga, said the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, would deliver the Anniversary Lecture titled, “An Enduring legacy.”

    He added: “The 75th anniversary represents the celebration of a gift that has endured – our club, our values and our pride. The Club was born through a merger of European Club and Lagos Golf Club. Through careful nurturing and the breaking down of artificial boundaries of segregation, the club, which started as an assembly of largely expatriates, civil servants and members of the business community, has blossomed into a study in inter-racial and inter-ethnic relations.”

    Among the events lined up for the celebration are: health talk, Elders’ Day, Cultural Evening, Children’s Party, Disco Evening for the junior members and Jazz music. The events will end on Sunday with a variety show and presentation of prizes.

    “Ikoyi Club 1938 consists of men and women of different ethnic origins, nations and diverse callings in top echelons of their organisations. We occupy 456 acres of land and providing recreation facilities for about 10,000 members with eight sporting sections including swimming, golf, tennis, table-tennis, squash, badminton and others,” Orekoya said.
