  • Ikoyi cash whistleblower to be paid, says minister

Minister of Finance Mrs. Kemi Adeosun has said whistleblower who provided the tips that led to the recovery of funds stashed away in a property in Ikoyi, Lagos State will be paid in the next batch of payment planned for this month.

In a statement, the minister said the Federal Government has not withheld any fund due to any whistleblower.

“The Ministry has in place detailed procedures for processing payments due under the Whistleblower Policy. The procedures were designed to prevent abuse and legal disputes and to ensure protection of the information providers,” she said.

The statement, signed by Special Adviser to the Minister of Finance, Oluyinka Akintunde, said: “These procedures include an application by the agency,  which recovered the funds including evidence of the recovery, confirmation that there are no pending legal issues on the recovery, verification of the identity of the information provider, calculation of the amount payable and computation of relevant taxes.”

She said payments are made in monthly batches to ensure control and to protect the identity of information providers.

“To date, over 20 of such persons have been paid. From available records, the payment due on Ikoyi is among those being processed in the November batch, which will be released within the current month,” the minister said.

Adeosun said the Whistleblowing Policy of the Federal Government remains one of the present administration’s successful initiatives and that the government is fully committed to ensuring that all those who responded to the policy and partnered with it in the recovery effort are paid in full and most importantly have their identity protected.

The Whistleblower Policy was introduced in December 2016 by the Federal Government as part of the initiatives to wage war against corruption.

  • Standard IBTC offers solutions to schools

Schools no longer have to worry about collection of fees from parents as Standard IBTC Bank has introduced various electronic platforms for easy transactions.

Schools will now have multi-bank collection channels including online card payment via their websites, customised point of sale (POS) solutions, business banking online, as well as branded students identity card that can also be used as payment card.

Speaking at the launch of the innovative education solutions at the Wheatbaker, Ikoyi, the bank’s Head of Public Sector Group, Personal and Business Banking,  Mrs Idu Okwuosa,  said many schools faced challenges keeping their financial books in order.

She said: “Schools are faced with diverse challenges ranging from fees collections and reporting, salary payments, registration and record keeping to general administration.

“We have provided more options and solutions to schools and we are also discouraging people from going to banks to make payments. You can actually do that in your comfort zones and the payment will be traced immediately to the child you paid for as long as you put the identity number of the child. The schools in turn get the message.

“The whole idea started in Uganda and we want to reflect it here in Nigeria. Education is very important to any country and we give credit to Lagos State government. We want to partner with schools to help them solve their challenge, lend to them, most especially. We are actually adding more value to schools” she noted.

She noted that IBTC goes beyond financial mediation as education is part of the bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility.

The Head Merchant Solutions Digital Channels Acquiring Mrs Amaka Nwosu, explained that the bank’s aim is to provide seamless integration of the school’s portal system for validation of student information before payment is accepted. It guarantees extensive financial control of transactions, transparency across all payment channels and monitors the transactions.

She noted that during the bank’s survey of schools’ financial challenges, it was discovered they need a simple and automated multi-channel solutions for receiving payments from parents/guardians/students/members.

“They are also in need of integration of e-collection channels to the schools’ portal for ease of reconciliation, an efficient and secured solution for disbursing and managing petty cash expenses among others,” she said.

Financial Controller of Corona School Trust Council, Mr Adewale Soremi  praised the initiative, noting that issues of collection of fees, how and when due and making payments to other various vendors have been a challenge for schools.  He said it will also re emphasie the importance of a cashless society.

  • Ikoyi cash: Rivers APC accuses Wike of fresh plot to tarnish Amaechi’s image

Ikoyi cash: Rivers APC accuses Wike of fresh plot to tarnish Amaechi’s image

    •He was indicted, says governor

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC),  yesterday said it has uncovered a plot by Governor Nyesom Wike of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to tarnish the image of Minister of Transportation  Rotimi Amaechi, who is the leader of APC in the state, on the Ikoyi cash.

Rivers APC, through its Publicity Secretary, Chris Finebone, noted that the plot to rubbish Amaechi, the immediate governor of the state, would involve manifest falsehood, soon to be placed in the media.

Wike, however, alleged that Amaechi was indicted for stealing billions of public funds, by a court-approved judicial panel of inquiry, set up by his administration.

The main opposition APC in Rivers also revealed that the plot against the transportation minister would involve extensive forgeries and fabrications of various seemingly-sensitive documents to further buttress the lie that the Osborne Road, Ikoyi money, confiscated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), belonged to Amaechi and that he allegedly obtained it from the coffers of Rivers government, while he was governor of the state.

The party said: “Initially, when Wike claimed that the Osborne Road, Ikoyi money belonged to Rivers State, the EFCC presented an ample opportunity for the Rivers governor to step forward and provide evidence and possibly pick up the money, but he (Wike) chickened out, until the period granted by the court elapsed. Wike did not take advantage of that window, because he had no iota of evidence and he knew it. The present devilish efforts by Wike to pour tar on Amaechi will go the futile way of the governor’s previous efforts.

“APC is saddened that more than two years after being sworn in as the governor of Rivers State, Wike is still hell-bent on destroying the image of his former boss, benefactor and predecessor. We wish to remind him that his evil plans for the man who gave him a lift in life will continue to fail to his grief.

“We note that instead of aimlessly deceiving himself in his cocoon of self-delusion that he can bring down Amaechi, the APC would like the Rivers governor to settle the scores he has with his own dishonorable reputation of lies and deceit.

“Wike stood before God and men in a church in Etche LGA of Rivers State to lie, when he claimed that the Federal Government was undermining his government by slashing the state’s monthly allocations. He refused to tell the truth that he had earlier pledged a good chunk of the state’s future monthly allocations as collateral security to commercial banks for the huge loans he took at double digit interest rate.

“Like in the case of the federal allocations, the Rivers governor recently told another group of clergymen during a church programme that the Federal Government paid the state only N17 billion as refund on Paris Club loan and not N34 billion, as claimed by the Federal Government. However, evidence made available to the APC by officials of Federal Ministry of Finance indicates that Wike actually signed and collected N34 billion as Paris Club loan refund for Rivers State.”

Rivers APC also stated that it was convinced that Wike, fearing that his lies were about to be made public, decided to raise spurious allegations against the minister of transportation, being his usual style of diverting attention and shifting the focus of public scrutiny from himself.

It noted that if indeed the Rivers governor had any credible evidence that the Ikoyi cash belonged to Amaechi or Rivers government, he would have joyfully approached the EFCC and the court to claim the money, stressing that the present attempt to raise spurious claims, through concocted documents, was mere smokescreen to cover up the obvious lack of transparent governance by Wike.

APC called on Rivers people in particular and Nigerians in general to disregard all forms of fabricated stories that Wike was about floating in the public space through print and electronic media, as well as on the Internet, maintaining that it would continue to deconstruct, demobilise and discredit the grand deceit that the Rivers governor and his mafia government represented.

Wike, through Rivers Commissioner for Information and Communications, Dr. Austin Tam-George, also accused Amaechi of relocating to Port Harcourt to impose a governor on Rivers state, through subterfuge and electoral gerrymandering in 2019, describing the actions as a classic case of a rapist returning to his victim to ask for love.

Rivers governor said: “It is important to constantly remind a forgetful public, that Mr. Amaechi was indicted for stealing billions of public funds, by a court-approved judicial panel of inquiry, set up by the State Government.

“Even by the standards of Nigerian political misbehavior, Mr. Amaechi’s record presents a unique and intriguing specimen.

“Here is a man, whose brazen refusal to pay pensioners their entitlements for six months, contributed to the deaths of hundreds of senior citizens in Rivers State, between 2014 and 2015.

“Mr. Amaechi’s thoughtless policies and reckless public spending literally broke the economic spine of Rivers State. His administration was marked by myth making and public deceit.

“Throughout the 2015 political campaigns, the APC presented itself as a better alternative to the PDP. Mr Amaechi’s adjectival insistence that he is the ‘leader’ of the APC in Rivers State is the clearest indication of the moral carcass that the party of ‘change’ has become in Nigeria.”

Wike admonished Rivers people and other Nigerians to ignore the lies of Amaechi and his factionalised APC.

  • Ikoyi, V/I, Lekki residents get 14 days to remove ‘illegal’ structures

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has given Ikoyi, Victoria Island and Lekki residents 14 days to remove “illegal” structures from inner streets.

A statement yesterday by Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Mr Tunji Bello said the governor gave the ultimatum after being briefed on the completion of the first stage of the exercise which involved major streets.

Bello said the monitoring committee would deploy its task force to the inner streets of Ikoyi, Victoria Island and Lekki after the grace period.

He said a mop up was carried out early this year when it was observed that some of the cleared places were being reconstructed, adding that the governor has directed that another mop up be done.

Bello explained that since the completion of the first stage, the committee has continued with its advocacy programme on the need to sustain the gains and ensure retention of the areas’ original masterplan.

The special committee, he added, has also been engaging stakeholders like Victoria Island Ikoyi Residents Association (VIIRA) on how the Clean Up exercise can record more gains in terms of voluntary compliance by residents.

To recalcitrant residents, Bello said: “We will bring the full effect of the law to bear on whoever contravenes our State Environmental Sanitation laws.

For all the mechanics and roadside automobile engineers who have been dislodged from the major streets but have relocated to the inner streets and have converted all the walkways, playgrounds, you have still not reached your operating destination. The task force is coming after you when the second phase commences. The earlier you realise that there is no place for roadside mechanics, street traders, shanties or abandoned properties in those areas, the better for you”.

He said the government would not hesitate to shut down the Federal Marriage Registry in Ikoyi whose patrons park indiscriminately on the road if the practice is not stopped.

The SSG said mobile courts would sit to try offenders on all days of the inner streets Clean- Up operation.

  • Rain causes flooding, gridlock in Ikoyi, Victoria Island

Some parts of Lagos were flooded yesterday following an early morning rain.
It also caused heavy traffic in the metropolis.
Areas flooded were Adeniji Adele on Lagos Island, as well as Ikoyi and Victoria Island in Eti Osa Local Government Area.
Some residents of Idumagbo Avenue on Lagos Island said the flood was caused by the blockage of the major canal in the neighbourhood and its overflow.
A resident, Mr Yinka Shittu, said the road works in the area also contributed to the flooding.
“You can see that there is ongoing reconstruction work on this road which has not been completed. Also, construction works where the drainage canal meets the road have yet to be completed. Traders and some of us living in this area have tried to open up the drainage systems but the water has been stagnant,’’ he said.
A watch repairer, Alhaji Malik Yaro, said some residents dumped refuse in the drains.
“I am, therefore, not surprised that the floodwater here today was knee deep. People dump refuse of all sorts — empty containers, takeaway plates and papers — in the drainage system. I am assuring you that if the situation continues this way, nobody will like to pass through this place whenever it rains heavily like this again and the floodwater may enter people’s homes and shops,’’ he said.
A trader, Mr Chudi Ibeazu, said the road works were not moving fast enough.
“Since November 2016, the slabs where the canal joined the main road had been opened and we have not seen any serious work to show that they want to open up the drainage system for water to flow.
“You can see from the pattern of flooding; on the left side, coming from Adeniji, the water is still moving but on the right side, the water is not moving at all.
“My wish is for the government to take a cue from the effect which this rainfall had on the area and speed up construction works in the area.
“We clear the drainage system at the point where the canal joins the road every other day and especially on Thursdays, but the problem is that the water in the canal does not flow,’’ he said.
The rain which began around 7:30 am, ended around 9:50 in Somolu on the Mainland.
A resident, Mrs Oyindamola Adedapo, said the rain brought relief from the heat.
Another resident, Damola Oriyomi, said the rain was refreshing, adding that it is a sign that the area will be cool.
“Heat and mosquitoes have been a regular challenge to me every night because it has hindered me from sleeping well. I have been longing for rain since the beginning of the year and I thank God it rained. Am sure I will now be able to sleep better every night.”
Commissioner for the Environment Dr Babatunde Adejare said the government would not relent in its efforts to stem flooding in the metropolis.
He urged the public to change their disposal habits and refrain from turning canals and drains into refuse dumpsites.
Such behavioural change, the commissioner said, was necessary because sudden rain, like that one, could cause flooding.
