  • Ikpeazu empowers graduates of skills acquisition

The wife of the Governor of Abia State, Mrs. Nkechi Ikpeazu, has charged 44 graduates of skills acquisition to utilize the equipment given to them to improve their livelihood.

Mrs. Ikpeazu gave the charge at Ummunneochi LGA were the training, sponsored by Abia State Government, took place.

Speaking earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs, Dr. Nnenna Chikezie, said the programme was put together to put smiles on the faces of the downtrodden.

In their speeches, the chairman of the occasion, Dr. Johnson Uzoatuegwu and the Chairman of Ummunneochi Local Government Council, Mr. Okey Igwe, expressed thanks.

Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Ozioma Okorie, expressed gratitude to the state government for empowering them to be self-reliant and pledged to use the equipment and skill to improve themselves.

The items used for the empowerment include 12 laptops, 10 sewing machines, 12 hairdressing equipment, and tools used for bean cake baking.

The ceremony featured the foundation laying ceremony of a borehole at the council headquarters by the wife of the governor.

In a related development, the government of Abia State has provided five refuse disposal trucks for the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA).

This is coming at the time refuse heaps could be seen in almost all parts of the state, especially in Aba and the capital city, Umuahia.

Abia at 26: Ikpeazu seeks collaboration to develop state

Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has called for the collaboration of the residents to develop the state.

This is even as he has promised to continue to pursue the dreams of the state’s founding fathers.

In a message marking the 26th anniversary of the creation of the state by the General Ibrahim Babangida military government on August 27, 1991, Ikpeazu noted that the state was continuously moving on the path of growth, development and fulfilment of the aspirations of its founding fathers.

The governor noted that the development of a state demands collective efforts of the government and the governed.

He said: “Every truly great state and country got there not because its people were pessimistic and negative about the future of the state but because there was a sense of pride and ownership – a belief in a shared destiny with the state and a resolution by the people to do all they can every new day to make the state great.”

According to him, the decision of the current administration to run an open government was a deliberate step to continually keep the people abreast of developments on the “commonwealth and shared aspirations”.

Ikpeazu noted that despite the challenges his administration had been facing since it assumed office in 2015, it had not faltered, despaired nor sought for excuses.

The governor said the administration had, instead, confronted the challenges before it with clear evidence for all to see.

He said: “From road construction across the state to sustained educational excellence, qualitative healthcare to an innovative agricultural revolution, social mobilisation to the gainful engagement of our youths, our administration has set new standards in the delivery of the dividends of democracy.

“Today, our state is the toast of the Federal Government and diverse development partners because we looked inwards and championed the innate qualities of our people – hard work, resilience, entrepreneurship – and told our story.

“The country is listening to us and great opportunities are unfolding. I call on our youths to eschew all acts of division and disunity and embrace peace and hard work for our salvation lies in our own hands. May God continue to bless the works of our hands.

“As we go on, we will yet do more. We do not see challenges; we only see possibilities. I assure you that the possibilities and opportunities to make our state great are endless. We have set our hands on the plough and we shall succeed.”

  • PDP screens Oduah, Ubah, Ikpeazu, others for Anambra poll

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday screened Senator Stella Oduah, oil magnate, Dr. Patrick Ubah and House of Representatives member, Lynda Ikpeazu, for the November 18 Anambra State governorship election.

Others also screened include a former Minister of State, John Okechukwu Emeka, Dr. Alex Obiogolu, Oseloka Henry Obaze and Mr. Akolisa Ufodike.

The screening, which held yesterday at the party’s secretariat in Abuja, witnessed a mild drama as the committee complained about indiscipline among the aspirants.

Committee Chairman Adamu Maina Waziri said it was unfortunate that some aspirants showed up at the venue 90 minutes behind schedule.

Waziri, a former Police Affairs Minister, fingered Oduah and Ubah as the late comers.

He expressed the committee’s displeasure at their action.

The committee chairman urged the aspirants to display the spirit of sportsmanship in the overall interest of the party, adding that the PDP has everything to lose if another party wins the election.

Waziri assured the aspirants justice and fairness in the screening, remind that in line with the party’s constitution, none of them would be required to pay above the N6 million nomination fees.

According to him, the party decided to waive the fees for women aspirants to enable them take active interest in partisan politics.

Also, Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa said the PDP would welcome back some of its high profile defectors to the party in the days ahead.

Okowa spoke yesterday while inspecting the Eagles Square in Abuja, venue for the party’s convention billed to hold on Saturday.

The Delta governor said necessary arrangements had been put in place for the convention.

He said: “We just came to see what is on the ground. I believe our people will be safe because we have everything under control. We are not expecting any hitches at all.

“We are doing very well as a party and as a committee. In this kind of planning, you will have some challenges here and there, but there are solutions for everyone. We are confident that we are on the right track, and it shall be well on Saturday.

“This is a new PDP. With the excitement we saw after the Supreme Court victory, we did see among Nigerians and not only PDP followers, I believe a lot of people who thought the party was going to implode will realise that we are back alive and ready to offer what it takes to better the lives of Nigerians.

“Many of our members, who left earlier due to one form of disagreement or the other, will return to their party because the National Caretaker Committee (NCC) has constituted a Reconciliation Committee as well as a Contact and Mobilisation Committee to reach out to them.

“From the way things are going presently in this country, I believe Nigerians will realise that PDP is the only alternative that can bring Nigeria out of her current economic challenges.”

Also, the party’s National Chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, assured members that the disagreements in the Southwest had been resolved.

  • Saraki, Ikpeazu, Dogara, APC decry killings

Saraki, Ikpeazu, Dogara, APC decry killings

•Fish out killers, say Ngige, Uba

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara have condemned the attack on St. Phillips Catholic Church in Ozubulu, Anambra State.

In a statement, the APC condemned the barbarism displayed by the callous attackers who gunned down defenceless people as they worshipped.

The party called on security agencies “to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous crime are promptly apprehended and brought to justice. ”

It also called on “security agents in Anambra as well as other parts of the country to provide adequate security in places of worship to forestall a repeat of this unfortunate incident”.

Dogara described the attack as “abominable, barbaric, inhuman, and the height of wickedness”.

In a statement signed by his spokesman Turaki Hassan, the Speaker said his “heart is broken” by the sad news.

He added: ”Have we lost our humanity? Where is the place of sanctity of life and sacredness of worship places in our society? What offence did the worshippers commit to warrant their massacre in cold blood by wicked souls and heartless men?”

The Speaker lamented that what he described as increasing insecurity was reducing Nigeria to the state of nature, with life increasingly becoming cheap.

He reiterated his call for the overhaul of Nigeria’s policing architecture that will lead to reform the police, equip them with sophisticated gadgets so as to discharge their duties of protecting lives and property effectively, and ensure social order.

Dogara called on security agencies to fish out the perpetrators of the “heinous crime” and bring them to justice speedily.

Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu is sad over the shooting.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Enyinnaya Appolos, Ikpeazu called on security agents to investigate the incident and speedily bring the perpetrators to justice.

Ikpeazu added: “We cannot afford to have criminal elements, in whatever guise, invade places of worship and unleash mayhem on innocent people. The thoughts and prayers of the good people of Abia State are with our brothers in Anambra State as we mourn with them over the sad incident.”

Senate President Bukola Saraki  expressed deep sadness over the attack.

In a statement by his media adviser Yusuph Olaniyonu, Saraki described the killing of worshippers as the purest kind of evil, and charged the security services to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

The statement said: “Today, my heart goes out to Nigeria’s Christian community, Governor Willy Obiano, the people of Anambra State, and the families of the victims and the survivors of this terrible massacre.

“This brutal act of attacking innocent and unsuspecting worshippers represents the purest kind of evil.

“Our security forces must not stop until everyone involved in the orchestration and execution of today’s massacre in St. Philip’s Catholic Church, Anambra are brought to book by the strong arm of justice.”

The Chairman of the South East Governors Forum and Governor of Ebonyi State,  Chief David Umahi, has described yesterday’s attack on worshipers at St Philips Catholic Church, Ozubulu as a national tragedy.

Umahi, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Emmanuel Uzor, condoled with the Government of Anambra State and entire Catholic faithful of Nnewi Catholic Diocese as well as families of those that lost their loved ones and called for proper investigation to unravel the true cause of the carnage at the church.

“This type of wickedness has further opened a fresh wound in our soul and further pointed to the dynamism of human existence. I on behalf of the good people of Ebonyi State condemn the wanton killlings recorded yesterday in a church in Anambra state.”

Senator Andy Uba condemned the shooting and killing of worshippers at the St. Philips Catholic Church.

In a statement by his media aide Joseph Itazi, Uba, who visited the scene said  Anambra people were not known for such violence.

Uba urged the commissioner of police and the governor to ensure that the perpetrators were brought to book.

“Such acts cannot be tolerated in Anambra: for worshippers to be slaughtered during mass is something that we must not allow in this state.

Minister of Labour and  Employment Chris Ngige urged security agents to unravel the circumstances surrounding the murder.

His condolence message said: ” This killing, so dastardly and so wicked is a dangerous dimension which is  very  alien to our people and culture. I therefore call on the police and other relevant security agencies to leave no stone unturned in tracking down the murderers and bringing them to justice”.

  • Ikpeazu restates commitment to industrialise Abia

Ikpeazu restates commitment to industrialise Abia

Abia State governor, Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu,  has restated his administration’s effort to industrialize the state. This is as he stated that 9,000 hectares of land has been acquired for the establishment of an industrial zone in the state.

Ikpeazu made this known during the launch of the Abia Job Centre Portal with the graduation ceremony of 472 trainees of Education for Employment (E 4 E) at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia.

The governor used the occasion to announce automatic employment of 170 graduands of the programme, who he said would work at the Abia Job Centre Portals in the 17 local government areas of the state.

He charged the graduands to be serious with their skills, stating that he regarded them as first fruits of his development strides. He said he saw them as the drivers of the industrial cluster that is being established in the state.

Delivering his speech, the Minister of Labour & Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige,  said diversification and skill acquisition is the way to grow the country’s economy especially in the face of the global economic challenge.

He said the essence of the job portal was to create an opportunity to match-make entrepreneurs. Ngige commended the governor for achieving the feat.

In their goodwill messages, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa,Chief Innocent Chukwuma, Prof. Uche Ikonne among others congratulated the graduands and appreciated Ikpeazu for initiating the programme.

In a keynote address titled “the Role of a Competent Workforce in the Development of Commerce & Industry in Nigeria” Mr. Peter Obi stressed that skills were very important and called on government to review school curricula to accommodate skills for employment.

Obi also appreciated Governor Ikpeazu for introducing the programme which he said would go a long way in taking the youths off the streets.

  • Ikpeazu dissolves cabinet

    Ikpeazu dissolves cabinet

… As lobbying for new appointments intensifies

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State has sacked members of the State Executive Council (SEC), including the Secretary to the State Government, commissioners and his personal aides. The sack is with immediate effect as the former officials were directed to hand over to their permanent secretaries.

The dissolution of the cabinet was contained in a release signed by the Permanent Secretary, Government House, Sir Onyii Wamah.

The statement reads in part: “The governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu has approved the dissolution of the State Executive Council with immediate effect and the body of special advisers and assistants are also included”.

“Consequently, Secretary to the State Government is to hand over to the Head of Service while commissioners are to hand over to the permanent secretaries of the various ministries”.

“The Deputy Chief of Staff, special advisers and assistants are to hand over to the Permanent Secretary, Government House and all handing over must be completed on or before Wednesday June 21, 2017”.

In a related development, another statement also signed by Sir Wamah said the governor has approved the appointment of Eziuche Ubani who was the immediate past commissioner for works as the Special Adviser, Works and Project Monitoring.

The other appointments include Engr. Emma Nwabuko as Special Adviser/Personal Secretary to the Governor while Solomon Ogunji is Adviser on Urban Renewal.

Though there were no reasons given for the dissolution, the new appointments were also said to be with immediate effect.

The Nation also learnt that commissioners for finance and justice, Hon. Obinna Oriaku and Justice Umeh Kalu retained their respective port-folios.

We gathered that the dissolution of the cabinet members and the governor’s aides did not come to them as a surprise as rumours over the weeks had it that the governor was going to carry out such exercise.

Sources who pleaded not to be mentioned disclosed that there was high level lobbying and phone calls in the past weeks by serving commissioners and governor’s aides when the information of an imminent shake up of the state cabinet filtered into their ears.

“We learnt that the governor has been receiving a lot of calls from the powers that be in the state by serving commissioners and aides who wants to be returned or appointed into another post. We equally learnt that from now (Friday night) to next week that the governor is going to make public the names of new officers that he will work with.

“It is not yet clear, but I think that the score card presentation of each ministry during the democracy day played a huge role as the event exposed some of the dormant commissioners. You know that some of the people appointed as commissioners were based on recommendation and a few of the people that the governor chose by himself. A few of those chosen by the state governor are the people that got the first nod to retain their seats or moved to another position.

“From what is happening, the governor wants people that he can hold accountable and people that will work for the state and don’t forget that the election year is just by the corner. The governor must show his full commitment. He must deliver his campaign promises if he must win the heart of the people to vote him back to office come 2019.

“I agree with you that cabinet reshuffle is a normal thing in government circles, but we must not rule out that the governor may equally want to compensate those that worked for him during the 2015 governorship election. What I can tell you is that, there is serious lobbying going on amongst the people seeking appointment and those at the corridors of power in the state and representatives of the state at the National Assembly,” a source who pleaded anonymity stated.

  • Ikpeazu urges youths to prioritise

Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has called on youths to channel their energies to worthwhile ventures and uplifting values, and shun mundane issues with which they seem to be preoccupied.

Speaking in Umuahia, the state capital, at the maiden edition of the Social Orientation Programme for Youths organised by the state government in collaboration with the Vicar Hope Foundation, Ikpeazu said that the need for youths to de-emphasise mundane issues cannot be overemphasised.

The governor who was represented by his deputy, Sir Ude Oko Chukwu, observed that the blissful future of Nigerian youths was constantly being challenged by uncertainties arising from involvement in cultism, alcoholism, drug addiction and armed robbery among many vices.

He stated that his government recognised the enormous responsibilities facing families, schools, churches, mosques and society in the total upbringing of the child and assured that he is assiduously committed to the welfare of the youth and that no stage of a child’s upbringing in Abia State would be taken for granted.

Also speaking, the wife of the governor and founder of the Vicar Hope Foundation, Mrs. Nkechi Ikpeazu stated that her foundation conceived the social orientation programme as its special gift to children in commemoration of the 2017 edition of the Nigerian Children’s Day celebration.

Mrs. Ikpeazu observed that children are the future of the nation and there is a compelling need to better prepare them for that future by consciously and deliberately mentoring them through programmes that point out the way they should go and by making them engage in activities that cater for their mental as well as corporeal facilities.

In a goodwill message, the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Chikwendu Kalu stated that the Abia legislature would, through robust and well-thought out legislation, create a conducive environment that will ensure that all youth attain their potentials in life irrespective of their family backgrounds.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the occasion and Vice Chancellor of Abia State University, Uturu, Prof. Uche Ikonne  who was represented by Prof. Maxwell Ogbolo stressed the need for the youth to be disciplined and focused on activities that are germane to the progress and development of society such as honesty and hard work.

The programme featured lectures, dance-drama and the unveiling of a 15 chapter book titled Toward A Better Tomorrow whose production was commissioned by Mrs. Ikpeazu and whose contents are tailored toward the needs, challenges, aspirations and endeavours of children.

The programme was attended by 3200 students aged 13-17 years and drawn from selected public and private secondary schools in the 17 local government areas of the state.

  • Abia: What next for Ikpeazu, Ogah, PDP?

Abia: What next for Ikpeazu, Ogah, PDP?

With the recent Supreme Court ruling on Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate in the 2015 Governorship Election in Abia State, Associate Editor, Sam Egburonu, reports on PDP’s role in the whole saga and the way forward for Uche Ogah and Governor Okezie Ikpeazu

ASIDE the leadership crisis at its national level, the in-fighting in Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) since May 2015, which crystalized in the prolonged legal battles over the right governorship candidate, can be traced back to the intrigues before and after its December 8, 2014 governorship primary election.

Although Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu won the primary election, polling, 489 votes, followed by Uche Ogah, who got 103 votes, Emeka Wogu, a former Labour Minister who got 33 votes and Marc Wabara, who got three votes, insiders told The Nation, that the state chapter of PDP has ever since suffered greatly because the processes leading to the outcome of the primary election was widely rejected by many of the aspirants and their supporters.

    PDP role in the saga

Our investigation confirms that it was the ‘seed sown at this period’ that was responsible for the in-fighting and the legal battles that have threatened the PDP-led government of Abia State since 2015 when Governor Okezie Ikpeazu took over the reins of power in the state. A source close to the PDP-led government of Abia State when the primary election was held, alleged that the then state government did very little to resolve the differences after the primary, a development he said that ‘only widened the gulf.’

The matter degenerated when the runner-up, Ogah, took the case to the Federal High Court, Abuja, accusing Ikpeazu of committing some tax offences and therefore challenging his eligibility to contest the 2015 governorship election as the flag bearer of the PDP.  On June 27, 2016, Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court in Abuja, found Ikpeazu guilty of tax offences and therefore sacked him from the office as governor of Abia State.

Following the judgment and order for immediate inauguration of Ogah as Abia State Governor, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), issued the Certificate of Return to him.

Not satisfied with the ruling, Ikpeazu had gone to the Court of Appeal which in August, 2016, affirmed his election and quashed the judgment of Justice Abang.

As would be expected, Ogah approached the Supreme Court, praying the apex court to uphold the ruling of the High Court.

Since then, observers held their breath even as the state government alleged that the prolonged legal battle affected governance. A PDP source also confided that for as long as the case lasted, most PDP grassroots leaders and members in the state were confused and unable to decide which of the group to support openly. “The state PDP suffered greatly all this while because both members and grassroots leaders did not know which of the groups to support openly. It affected the party greatly even as it helped the opposition to find its feet in the state,” the source said.

But even with the May 2017 Supreme Court ruling on the case between Governor Ikpeazu and Uche Ogah, which retained the governor as the PDP candidate and winner of the election, The Nation learnt that the party in the state is yet to resolve the seed of internal distrust that germinated before and after the 2015 primaries.

    The way forward

Although Uche Ogah, the aspirant that took the matter to the Supreme Court, had since accepted the ruling and congratulated Governor Ikpeazu, The Nation learnt that the party is yet to reconcile its warring members.

Ogah had, in a carefully worded acceptance and congratulatory message, released through his Chief Press Secretary said: “the Supreme Court unequivocally reaffirmed your nomination and election as the authentic governor of our beloved state, Abia.

“I have always been a law abiding citizen and will continue to be. My challenge of your nomination was borne out of a genuine desire for clarity and to see that things are put in its right perspective and today our apex court, the final arbiter have spoken.

“As the legal battle comes to an end with the Supreme Court declaration, I’m exceedingly happy today that in the course of this struggle, I never resorted to self-help nor encouraged my supporters to indulge in any form of violence.

“My interest in politics is not for fame or personal aggrandisement but to impart positively on the lives of the common man and to make our dear state, Abia, the envy of other states.

“My dear brother, it is worthy of note that my desire to see our home state in the right footing, developmentally and economically is not in doubt and a course I can put everything within my reach to see to fruition.

“Finally, from the depth of my heart, I wholeheartedly congratulate you and pray the Almighty God to guide you right in the enormous task of building a new Abia State where peace and tranquility reigns.”

Ikpeazu had also, in his post-victory message, called on Abians to join hands with him to ensure the accelerated growth and development of the state.”

These statements, though carefully chosen, confirmed fears that except the ruling PDP succeeds in rebuilding confidence amongst its members in the state, through genuine reconciliation, the party may continue to lose members to the opposition parties.

Commenting on the way forward from the point of view of Governor Okezie-led State Government, Comrade Bonnie Iwuoha, the Commissioner for Information, told The Nation in his office in Umuahia few days to the Democracy Day that the state government is open to genuine reconciliation. As he puts it, “The way forward is to unite the people of Abia State. The governor has appealed to those who contested with him, even now, as we plan for the Democracy Day, we are extending invitation to all to come and celebrate Abia. The doors are wide open. I was told that Dr. Onuoha Bourdex, who contested the Abia North Senatorial Election on the ticket of APGA, came on his own to congratulate the governor. The truth is that the interest of Abia should be the overriding factor.”

    What next for Ogah?

Although his close associates said Ogah, the President of Master Energy Group, has since the Supreme Court’s ruling devoted most of his time to the day to day running of his conglomerate which has over 15 subsidiaries even as he is now sighted more often at the multi-faceted factory he built in his Uturu home, his political future has become a source of concern both for the ruling PDP in the state and the opposition political parties who are courting him.

There are feelers that Ogah may soon dump PDP for one of the opposition political parties in the state. According Chief Samson Ogbonna, a retired school principal and community elder in Abia North, “there is every sign that Ogah will no longer remain in PDP. If that happens, we cannot blame the young man. We all know that he was not treated fairly in PDP, in spite of the prominent role he played as a major financier of the party in the state. He was also a major contributor to the Abia State Government’s Youth Empowerment Programme in the government of Senator T. A. Orji, yet when this family disagreement started, many of us felt he was not fairly treated. PDP in the state and by extension, the state government then is like a father whose children had some disagreements. The right thing to do would be to resolve it fairly. So, except such genuine peace process is initiated and effectively carried out, no one would be surprised if Ogah leaves PDP and joins any of the other parties,” he said.

Already, there are signs that Ogah may consider joining the All Progressives Congress (APC). Besides the fact that most of the leaders and members of his political structure, ‘Abia Rejoice’ have already joined APC, The Nation gathered that the party had send powerful delegations to woo Ogah, even as they reason that his membership will further boost the party in the state. Chief K. C. Ugbajah, the former Commissioner for Works and former Executive Chairman of Ikwuano Local Government Area, who was a member of the APC Contact and Mobilisation Committee that visited and wooed Ogah, told The Nation that the party believes Ogah will move over to APC to help propagate the message of change in the state.

The Director-General of Buhari South-East Youth Movement (BUSEYM), Engr. Nwabueze Onwuneme, who also confirmed the APC moves to woo Ogah in the state, told The Nation that his group are waiting for Ogah to join APC in order to join hands with them to promote President Muhammadu Buhari’s developmental programmes in the South-East. “I can confirm to you that efforts are being made to ensure that Ogah takes the right step, which is to join APC and support President Buhari’s efforts,” he said.

As the preparations for the 2019 General Elections gathers steam, Abia stakeholders are anxious to see how PDP will handle the Okezie Ogah saga even as the opposition parties woo estranged PDP members and other top politicians in the state.

Others are former Speaker, House of Assembly and the PDP’s deputy governorship candidate in the 2014 election, Hon. Adejare Bello, from Ede in the  Western senatorial district as well as former chairman of Ife East Local Government, Chief Gbenga Owolabi.

  • Aba residents assess Ikpeazu

On May 29, Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu presented his scorecard as his administration marked two years in office. He listed several achievements including completing about 40 roads, recovery and revamping government lands and oil palm estates, raising 2 million oil palm seedlings, and raising another 2.5 million seedlings this year, developing a 2,500 capacity layer farm at Umuahia with a production capacity of between 20,000 and 24,000 crates of eggs per cycle of 18 months, and training and retraining teachers. The governor also spoke of partnering with the Precious Kids Education Empowerment Organisation of Australia to lift the standards of primary schools in the state, feeding pupils, and driving made-in-Aba campaign as well as attracting N1.5 billion investment in the state, among other achievements. Not bad for a two-year-old administration, the government might say.

Notwithstanding, residents of Aba, the state’s commercial capital, are divided on whether the governor has soared or simply been walking. While some felt the government has done well compared to the previous administration, others said it was yet to positively affect the lives of the people.

Hon. Uchechi Ogbuka, former State Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, said in a telephone interview: “We thank God for giving us a governor like Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu. We are very happy for his achievement so far in spite of the fact that he has been in the court in the last two years. That didn’t deter him from dishing out democratic dividends to Abians.

“He has revived the locally made goods. Recall that Aba sometime in the past was deserted. Most of the artisans ran away at that time. But today, Aba is growing up and goods made in Aba are now making waves at the international market courtesy of Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu. You can recall that so many roads in Aba and other parts of the state were in a deplorable state before Ikpeazu came to power. But today, he is building roads that will stand the test of time. The system of handling finance in Abia is second to none. The finances are managed so well that civil servants in the state don’t go on strike unlike what is obtainable in other states. He is a very transparent manager who puts everything on the table for everybody to see..

“I disagree with people who are saying that Ikpeazu is yet to meet the expectations of people that voted him into power. He has done his best and the best that we are expecting will come now that he has settled down. Since he was able to achieve the little that he has achieved even while in court, now that the matters are over, I am confident that Abians will have cause to smile because he is going to put his efforts into developing and serving Abia.”

Dr. Alex Otti, who lost the election to Ikpeazu, also assessed the governor, saying, “If you live in Abia State you don’t need me to say anything, I don’t need to say anything, salaries are being owed for several months, we came in through Umuahia today and the city is as dirty as anything, heaps of rubbish all over the place in a state capital.

“There is nothing that has changed, Aba is the same, we see all those reports on national newspapers and online, it’s very unfortunate. I am not surprised though because it is the same party that has been in government in the last 17 or 18 years, so I am not surprised and that was why Abia people wanted that change and they still want the change.

”That is my assessment, the important thing is that it is my opinion and I will want Abia people to know that they are entitled to their opinion. You know we have been used to a system where everybody lines up behind one man; the man determines what everyone else says, I will like us to move away from that and am sure we are happy that we are moving out.

“I believe Abia people are in a better position to assess the performance of the present government. They can go and see what is happening in their neighbouring states, go to Ebonyi State, they are now several miles ahead of Abia State and they don’t have oil, Anambra does not have oil, so they don’t have 13% derivation. That is how sad it is. We are not there yet and it behooves on all of us to ensure that we continue pushing until we get to where we should be celebrating.”

The Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abia State Chapter, Comrade Ben Godson noted that the Ikpeazu’s administration may have started on a good note judging from the level of decay and abandonment, the immediate past governor of the state and now Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Theodore Orji left the state.

Godson was angry, though, that despite the contribution of his oil-producing community to the economy of the state, two years into his administration, Ikpeazu was yet to improve the lives of the people of the community.

“Ukwa West is an oil-producing area,” he said. “It is the goose that lays the eggs the state is enjoying. They are the people that made Abia to be listed among oil producing states in the country. But as I speak with you, the government of Abia State is yet to embark on a meaningful project in the area. Are we talking about roads? The deplorable nature of roads is nothing to write home about. No good school. No good water scheme. The people are still impoverished despite the role their community is playing to the economic generation and growth of the state and until that is done.”

A civil servant who would not want her name in print lauded the incumbent administration for improving infrastructure but lamented the inability of the state to pay its workforce promptly.

According to the local government worker, the continued delay in paying workers’ salaries has forced many of them to relocate to the village.

The worker said many of them have been forced to also withdraw their children from private schools where quality of education is higher.

“Even the school feeding introduced by the state government for pupils in public schools in the state, for me is to score cheap political point. They only use the media to get attention.”

A respondent who gave his name as Chima Okoh described the whistleblowing policy that was recently introduced by the state government as a welcome development which if properly harnessed would go a long way in curbing crime.
