JUST IN: Gunmen set two patrol vehicles ablaze, kill security operatives in Imo

No fewer than eight security operatives were feared dead on Tuesday, September 19, as two patrol vehicles conveying them were set ablaze by unidentified gunmen in Imo state.

An eyewitness who spoke to newsmen said the incident happened at about 11:30 am in Oriagu, around the Aba branch in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of the state.

A video clip of the attack which went viral, revealed five charred bodies of soldiers with their uniforms and guns. It also showed that two patrol vehicles were inflamed.

At the time of filing this report, it was said that the road leading to the scene of the incident had been condoned off as tension continued to rise around the affected community.

Another resident disclosed that the local government area has been identified as an operational zone for the hoodlums who, the Nation learnt operated from a valley that is difficult for the security operatives to manoeuvre.

He said: “Anytime they attack, they escape into the valley which has a thick vast forest with caves surrounding it that makes it difficult for the security people to arrest them, the government knows that place is dangerous.”

At the time of filing this report, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Henry Okoye, is yet to respond to the enquiry on the incident.

Acting Poly Rector denies endorsing Imo PDP candidate

The Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Imo State, Dr. Chris Onyemenonu, has denied a report claiming he has endorsed the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the November 11 governorship election.

According to the Special Adviser on Media to the Rector, Dr. Ugochukwu Iwuji, there was no iota of truth in the purported claim.

A group of students  held an event within the school premises and it was alleged that the Rector along with other management staff  were in attendance.

But, Iwuji countered, saying neither the Rector nor any management staff of the institution was in attendance.

Iwuji said: “Our attention has been drawn to a perfidious scheme of some mischief makers to tarnish the hard-earned image of the Acting Rector of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Chris Onyemenonu. These agents of falsehood have circulated a video with a spurious claim that the new polytechnic helmsman  has declared the polytechnic a PDP institution.

“The Acting Rector never attended the said event, nor did he delegate any of his principal officers or anyone else to represent him. In other words, the student body acted on its own accord, an action that is already a subject of an investigative panel.

”Their intention is principally to mislead the public into believing that the institution or its principal officers have political leaning. They even alleged that staff of the institution was persuaded to attend the event, a programme that was meant for female students of Engineering School.

“One of the plans of these fifth columnists is to give the impression that last Thursday’s event of the Council of Vice Presidents in the School of Engineering Technology of our institution was organized to give an audience to some PDP actors.

“On the contrary, the event which had Engr. Dr. (Mrs.) Joan Arimanwa as Keynote Speaker dwelt on the theme: Female Engineers Advancing Technology in Society, the aim of which was to advance the cause of female engineers in a technologically driven world. However, the event was not approved by Management as of the time it was held.

“May we place it on record that the identities of guests invited by the students were completely unknown to the management of the Federal Polytechnic prior to the event. So, whatever view they might have expressed do not represent the views of the institution

“The Management of the FederalPolytechnic Nekede hereby distances itself from any programme held by a student body to grant audience to politically exposed persons in general and the People’s Democratic Party in particular.”

  • APC hopes on Imo

    APC hopes on Imo

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, and the entire All Progressive Congress (APC) leadership in the Southeast must be hoping to steer the region closer to the ruling party at the centre, by winning the forthcoming governorship election in Imo State. Before Hope Uzodimma emerged through the controversial judgment of the Supreme Court in 2020, the region looked impregnable to the APC. But after Uzodimma came, Governor Dave Umahi decamped from the PDP to APC, with his entire state elected officials.

With two state governors in APC, it was believed that the party has become a significant player in the southeast region, as the 2023 general elections drew near. But unfortunately for the party, it increasingly became encumbered by the tragic conflict between the farmers and herders which was vigorously interpreted by many persons as a Jihad movement, meant to exterminate the people of the region and hand over their lands and ancestral homes to the alleged Fulani invaders.

Even more regrettable, President Mohammadu Buhari, the titular head of the party, by his actions, seemed to give credence to the alleged hidden agenda. After winning the second term election, President Buhari who had contested presidential elections with vice presidential candidates from the region, by his pronouncement seemed to have drawn a line against the people of the region. So, with his skewed appointments, poor handling of the farmers-herders clashes and gaffes against the people of the region, promoting APC in the region was framed as a sabotage, with all its implications.

To add fuel to the simmering fire, political gladiators sprinkled religious incense on the burning charcoal, and the conflagration consumed many and almost torpedoed the region’s economic progress. Unfortunately for APC, Peter Obi (Okwute), after winning the presidential primary of the LP, projected himself as the long foretold redeemer of the people of the region from all their problems since after the civil war, problems allegedly exacerbated by Buhari.

Overnight, the LP which had no structure, which had no serious membership base, and operating a vehicle gotten more or less on hire-purchase, became what the Igbo would call ugbo di oma, and there was bedlam to support the party. The hoopla against the APC was fever pitched. As explained by the Minister of Works and former governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. Dave Umahi, while he voted APC, his family members voted LP. For a long suffering people, the frugal but very wealthy and soft spoken Peter Obi fitted the image of a political messiah.

In the 2023, general election, up against what can be called Obi thunderstorm, many candidates contesting on other political platforms in the southeast were swept into political wilderness, by political neophytes sponsored by the LP, whose only credential is that they proclaimed Peter Obi as their political master. The PDP which had held sway in the southeast since the advent of this democratic era in 1999 was decapitated across the region in the presidential and National Assembly elections, not to talk of the APC with all its challenges.

After the general elections, many voters realized that in a fitful moment of anger against the system, they had thrown away the baby with the dirty bath water. In the governorship election which held three weeks after the presidential and National Assembly elections, in three out of five states, PDP managed to push back the effect of the thunderstorm and retained two states, but there were still casualties in the state legislative elections.  Some have since also realized that as Shakespeare wrote: “all that glitters is not gold”.

So, the Imo election will show how far other political gladiators have barricaded their terrains from the Obi thunderstorm. In fairness to Hope Uzodimma, for instance, while he entered the Imo State Government House tendentiously, he has established himself as a performing governor. Sounding out those who know the political trend in the state, there is hope that Hope Uzodimma will triumph at the polls, if performance will be the parameter to judge. Of course, the measure of performance is usually the quality of infrastructure built by a returning governor.

According to my sources, Hope is a man of class for whom only the best is good enough. So, the roads and buildings built by Hope’s government in his current term as governor are reputed to be of the highest standards. The governor also engineered the ground breaking ceremony of the Oguta seaport by the immediate past regime of President Buhari. Of note, a seaport in the southeast is a totem of political worship like the completed second Niger Bridge, which the APC-led federal government delivered.

Another plus for Hope is that he has also reasonably tamed the insecurity ravaging his state. While some may term his style as ruthless, he leaned on the Nigerian Army to confront the unknown gun men, who made many parts of Imo State a no go area for years. He also appears to have curtailed the atrocities of the armed herdsmen which many in the southeast, rightly or wrongly, believe were sent to annihilate the people of the region. How much he has contained that contagion will impact his re-election project.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Imo gubernatorial election would hold on November 11. Among the major political party gladiators, the Labour Party (LP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are the ones that should be giving the APC leaders sleepless nights. The state which started off as a PDP state in 1999, went to the Peoples Progressive Party (PPA) in 2007, with Ikedi Ohakim, declared the winner. In 2011, despite the incumbent Governor Ohakim contesting on the platform of the federal ruling party, the PDP, Rochas Okorocha, of the All Progressive Alliance (APGA) won the election.

In 2019, because of the internal crisis in APC, the PDP won back the state, with Emeka Ihedioha as governor. But following the judgment of the Supreme Court, the state fell into the palms of the APC again. So, the political trajectory of party politics in the state shows volatility, and the APC must double its effort to retain the state. At the inauguration of Governor Hope Uzodimma Campaign Council over the weekend, the chairman of APC, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, recognized that challenge, as he pleaded with the people of the state to re-elect Governor Hope Uzodimma, to be able key into the plans of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the centre.

No doubt, the people of Imo State would fare better, if the ruling party in the state is the same as the one at the centre, more so, with the acclaimed performance of the incumbent governor, Hope Uzodimma. The November 11, gubernatorial election, will show whether the Obi Thunderstorm is still potent.

  • Imo guber: More PDP defectors join APC, pledge support for Uzodinma

Imo guber: More PDP defectors join APC, pledge support for Uzodinma

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo state welcomed new members as the structures of the minority party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Egbema, Ohaji-Egbema local government area, crumbled in favour of the APC.

The defectors have committed themselves to collaborating with their fellow community members to support Governor Hope Uzodimma’s re-election bid in the upcoming gubernatorial election on November 11.

They explained that their decision to join the APC stemmed from their desire to contribute to his successful re-election for a second term.

Addressing the new APC members from Egbema, Opiah provided assurance that more PDP leaders from Ohaji-Egbema would soon make the transition to the APC, emphasizing that this transition is an ongoing process.

He said: “There are those who are still dilly-dallying. They will make up their minds soon. It is our desire to collapse the PDP in Ohaji-Egbema for the governor’s reelection.

“Nobody will discriminate against you in our dear party, the APC. There is no foundation member and no joiner. We share our things equally, and we don’t discriminate. If you notice any discrimination, report it to us quickly, and the person would be sanctioned.”

He urged the new APC members to consider themselves lucky to have left the PDP because it has become a dead party and reunited with their kits and kin in the APC.

Opiah noted: “You’re lucky to be with us. In the administration of Governor Hope Uzodimma, there are so many goodies going around. Opposition is never a good thing. It is never what a good politician would wish himself. For us, we don’t see you as joiners of the APC. We see you as brothers coming back together. We were together in the PDP, but we are together now in the APC. The PDP is dead in Imo, and you cannot be in a dead party.”

The state chairman of the APC, Mcdonald Ebere, while welcoming the new members to the APC, urged them to work assiduously for the reelection of the governor. He said that leadership is about bringing people together.

Ebere said: “You can see that we are receiving you under the rain. This shows how serious we are. We can receive you at any time. Leadership is about harvesting people for the party and not about drinking champagne. I urge all of you to work very hard to deliver the governor. Please tell those still watching that there is no road in the PDP. We will not discriminate against you,” he said.

Earlier in his remarks, the LGA chairman of the party, Obinna Obasi, said the party operates an open-door policy and that the new members were welcome to the party.

He urged them to feel free and contribute their quota to the success of the party and the reelection of the governor.

The Sole Administrator of the LGA, Hon. Marcel Amadioha, while also welcoming the new members, said that with their presence in the APC, the PDP in the LGA is a foregone conclusion.

Some of the new members who spoke on half of the others said they were happy to be in the APC and assured that they would work very hard for the governor’s reelection.

Imo ADP governorship candidate slams monarchs for cursing voters

The Action Democratic Party (ADP) governorship candidate for the November 11 Imo State governorship election, Dr. Kachi Nwoga, has condemned the actions of some monarchs, who recently gathered and cursed voters from across the 27 councils for not supporting the re-election bid of Governor Hope Uzodimma.

Nwoga, in a statement, described the activities of the traditional rulers as not only inglorious and absurd, but also unacceptable.

It was gathered that a cross section of monarchs from Orlu Zone placed the alleged curses on voters at Nkwerre Local Government.

The ADP standard-bearer said cursing anyone not voting for Governor Uzodimma was wrong and condemnable.

The statement said: “My attention has been drawn to the trending videos and reports on the debased outing of a few traditional rulers placing curses on anyone who is not supporting the incumbent governor. I wish to respond as follows:

“First, it is wrong to say ‘traditional rulers of Orlu or Orlu zone’, as we can’t ascribe the absurd act of a few to the largely innocent and many responsible traditional rulers known to us in Orlu and Orlu zone. Surely, those Eze who went to Nkwerre did so on their own.

“Secondly, as a scion of royal stock, I find those acts abhorring. As a citizen of Imo State, I feel those traditional rulers deserve more pity than anger. As a Christian, I find their act one of depravation, and as the governorship  candidate of ADP and the incoming governor of Imo State, I am very satisfied with the overwhelming outrage of ‘Imolites’ to that malfeasance. In fact, the outrage cannot be better captured as has been widely expressed across all platforms and across the globe.

“I therefore wish to commend my Imo people for waking up to the call to put things right in the state, as against hitherto appearing to succumb to intimidation or acquiescence to wrongdoing. I have therefore gladly shared their expressions with the tons of well-wishers who have reached me in their consternation.”

The First Lady of Imo State Chioma Deborah Uzodimma has hosted this year’s August meeting.

She has displayed that age does not determine wisdom as she possesses uncommon wisdom laced with witty, highly cerebral and hospitable demeanour.

When it comes to hospitality, the first lady has a mastery of it, hence, anytime she hosts an event with her husband, the roll call will be quite massive with everyone willing to attend.

Former President Buhari visited Imo State twice in the spate of six weeks during his second tenure in office and the presidential entourage confessed that the first lady is accommodating, vibrant, mobile and homely in her treatment to not only those in Government but to the common anyone and everyone, who comes in contact with her.

The National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial and Financial Institution Employees (NUBIFIE) has shunned the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) strike action in Imo State.

Officials of the banks and insurance companies in the state were seen on Tuesday, September 5, attending to their customers while at the State secretariat, along Owerri-Port Harcourt road, workers were seen moving about within and outside the premises as some were at their duty posts. The Nation did not see any group assembling for protest.

It was, however, gathered that several workers did not report to work.

Some passersby however attributed it to the heavy downpour which started in the early hours.

The Nation correspondent who monitored the situation reports that banks on Bank Road, Wethral and Douglas Roads opened for businesses in the state.

The NLC chairman in the state, Dr. Phillip Nwansi said: “It is an NLC strike and you know that we are participating.”

Also, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) counterpart, Comrade Uchenna Great Ibe said they have not received a directive from the headquarters in Abuja to join any protest.

“The national headquarters of TUC has to give us a directive. The only directive in circulation is that of NLC. So we are waiting.”

Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in the state to ensure the security of lives and properties. According to top security personnel at the command headquarters, Owerri, “we are prepared not only for NLC strike but for every other eventuality that may disrupt peace and orderliness in the state.”

Imo guber poll: I will raise minimum wage to N80,000, says APGA candidate

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) governorship candidate in Imo State, Tony Ejiogu, has promised to raise the minimum wage of the workers to N80,000 if elected the governor on November 11.

Ejiogu, who disclosed this during the flag off his campaign in Owerri, Imo state capital, said the current N30,000 minimum wage is not realistic in today’s Nigeria, adding that he would raise the internally generated revenue (IGR) and harness other sources of revenue to increase the quality of lives in the state.

He also promised to restore security in the state as part of his priorities when he assumes office as the governor.

Ejiogu said: “My priority is to restore security to our dear state so that we may once again enjoy the simple pleasures of life and feel safe.”

He equally expressed sadness with the level of poverty in the state and country in general and vowed to harness the agricultural potential of the state to make food abundant to the people.

He added: “Imo State has the highest literacy rate at 97% in Nigeria, according to the NBS. The secret to this is that we feed our children well. Let me remind you that we cannot disconnect the intellectual capacity of a child from how well he is fed. Yet, today, we face one of the worst food insecurities in our lands.

“Sadly, even Ohaji Egbema, Ngor Okpala, Mbaise, Oguta and Ikeduru, all areas known as our food baskets for generations can no longer produce enough for themselves because of insecurity. Therefore, we shall set out to make food abundant again, by making it safe for farmers to return to their farmlands, harnessing our agricultural potential fully and making the right investments so that our people can have more than enough to eat.”

He said he would tackle the issue of unemployment and ensure that graduates roaming the streets are able to find meaningful employment.

The governorship hopeful noted: “The root of poverty, which is widespread in our state today, is unemployment. Shall we ever complain too much about the lack of jobs today? Who among you here today does not have a brother, sister, son, daughter or cousin who finished university several years ago but has no job to wake up to every morning? Our dear State churns out one of the largest number of graduates yearly, but nearly 6 out of 10 are not able to find any meaningful employment.”

“These problems are surmountable, but because we have voted individuals into political offices who lack the necessary capabilities to tackle these, we find ourselves grappling with them for so long, while the solution to these problems lies within our reach. My dear people, freedom beckons.

“A breeze that will change everything about us and our beloved state. Shall we not embrace this wind of redemption?”

Speaking also, the Anambra State Deputy Governor, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibeziem, who represented Governor Chukwuma Soludo, urged the members of the party to speak with one voice and take back the state.

He said: “We did it in Anambra State, we must do it in Imo. Vote and guard your votes.”

Also, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe said: “We are going to take over Imo just like the way we took over Abia. We are noted for chasing away unperforming governors from office. Join hands with us to vote Hope Uzodimma out of Douglas House come November 11.”

APGA National Chairman, Sly Eze Okenwa noted that the party had been winning elections until former governor of Imo State, Senator Rochas Okorocha threw away the mandate given to him by the party.

“Okorocha took our mandate and threw it into the bush, through the mercy of God, He has appointed for us another leader, another librator, Tony Ejiogu. We are advised to come out and vote and after voting protect the votes.”

The highlight of the event was the handing over of the party flag to the standard bearer,Tony Ejiogu and his deputy, Chris Ejike Uche.

The Imo chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has inaugurated its campaign council for the Nov. 11 governorship election with a boost from two All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwarts, Rochas Okorocha and Senator Ifeanyi Araraume.

Their endorsement of the PDP candidate, Senator Samuel Anyanwu was announced at the event in Owerri on Tuesday.

Several members of Okorocha’s Rescue Mission Group and Araraume’s Destiny Group announced their endorsement of Anyanwu adding that he was the only candidate who could wrest power from Gov Hope Uzodinma.

The council was inaugurated by the party’s Chairman, Charles Ugwu. Speaking on the development, Ugwu said the campaign will have Ikenga Ugochinyere, a member of the Federal House of Representatives, as Director-General, and Prince Marshal Okoroaforanyanwu as Secretary.

He charged all members to work towards ensuring the party’s victory in the election.

PDP’s gubernatorial candidate, Senator Samuel Anyanwu said he is in the race to end killings and insecurity, revamp the health system and restore the dignity of the workforce and pensioners.

He said that he would return tourism to the State and get the local governments working again.

Okoroaforanyanwu, secretary of the council, said the PDP’s choice of Anyanwu, who is from the Imo East senatorial district , favored the principle of equity.

He said the district had ruled the State for only seven months since the return of democratic rule in 1999.
