INEC fixes Imo supplementary election for April 25

There was mild drama Wednesday as the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Imo State, Dr. Gabriel Ada failed to give the accurate number of registered voters and the number of Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) collected in the areas where the Commission will conduct supplementary governorship fixed for April 25.

INEC had while declaring the governorship election inconclusive, given the figure of registered voters in the affected areas as 144715, which was higher than the margin with which the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Governor Rochas Okorocha was leading his closest rival, Emeka Ihedioha.

But Ada who briefed journalists Wednesday, could not confirm the figure or disclose the number of PVC distributed in the areas.

When pressed further, the REC, who had come under fire for the alleged compromised role of the Commission during the Presidential and governorship elections in the state, said that “the number is approximately between 145,000 to 150,000 registered voters”.

He also stated that the number of PVC collected will not form a threshold for the number of voters that will participate in the supplementary election, adding that “those that did not collect their PVC before the election still have the opportunity to do so because only those with their PVC that will participate in the election”.

The REC who was not also emphatic on the number of Polling Units where the scheduled election will hold, said that “the election will hold in over 200 Polling Units in 23 Local Government Areas of the state”.

He announced further that the APC won 16 seats in the House of Assembly elections, while the election was inconclusive in six constituencies and has been rescheduled to hold on the same date with the supplementary election.

  • Youths protest in Imo

Another round of protests rocked Owerri, the Imo State capital yesterday, as youths barricaded major roads, condemning INEC’s refusal to declare the winner of the governorship election.

Over 4,000 youths accused the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Gabriel Ada, of conniving with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to undermine the people’s will.

They alleged that the REC accepted the results manipulated by the PDP but rejected others, though it was obvious the All Progressives Congress (APC) won convincingly.

One of the youths warned that the stalemate might snowball into a crisis if INEC failed to do the right thing.

Guber polls: Okorocha vows to defend victory

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, Tuesday vowed to defend his mandate in the last governorship election against all forms of manipulations by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Imo Governor who addressed a press conference at the Government House, urged INEC to adopt the results of the six wards in Oru East, which were earlier rejected by the Commission over alleged irregularities and declare him winner.

According to him, the figure of registered voters in the areas that elections were cancelled, which was earlier put at 144715 by INEC has been corrected as 127000, “INEC has given the correct figure of registered voters in the areas they were claiming elections did not hold to 127000. By the time they consider those that collected their PVC, the number will further reduce and by the time they finish accreditation, the number will go down still. So INEC should stop delaying the people’s victory and announce the winner.”

The Governor also noted that if any of the results were to be rejected, it should be those of Aboh Mbaise, Ahiazu Mbaise and Ezinihitte Local Government Areas, where he said figures were falsified by the PDP, “the PDP candidate allocated over one hundred thousand votes to himself in the three LGAs, where elections never held so if there is any result that should be rejected, it should be the ones from those areas.”

He further advised the candidates from the opposition parties to take a cue from President Goodluck Jonathan and accept their defeat in good fate so that they could join hands with his administration to develop the state.

Meanwhile another round of protest rocked Owerri, the Imo state capital, where youths barricaded major roads in protest of the refusal of INEC to declare the winner of the governorship election.

The youths numbering over four thousand, accused the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Gabriel Ada of conniving with the PDP to undermine the will of the people.

They alleged that the REC in his game plan to declare the PDP candidate winner, had accepted all the results from the areas the PDP allocated fraudulent number of votes to its candidate and deliberately rejected results from areas where APC convincingly won.

One of the youths who did not want his name mentioned for obvious security reasons, warned that the stalemate in the state currently may snowball into full blown crisis if INEC fails to do the right thing or undermine the will of the people in anyway.

In another breath, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Captain Emmanuel Ihenacho, staged a peaceful protest with hundreds of his supporters against the conduct of the governorship election, which he demanded should be cancelled.

PDP calls for cancellation of Imo governorship election

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for the cancellation of the results of the governorship election in Imo State.
Citing violence and large scale irregularities at a media briefing in Abuja Monday, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had already declared the election inconclusive.
Metuh said: “PDP demands immediate cancellation of the election and conduct of fresh election in Imo State.
“In Oru East, electoral officials confessed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) members forced them to re-write results. Some fake policemen who were arrested confessed that they were recruited by the APC.
“In Ideato North and South, election did not take place but figures were allocated which forced Imo people to troop out in protest, demanding fresh election.
“The PDP cannot sit by and have results in its stronghold downplayed. We must observe the rules and stick to the tenets of democracy.
“Imo people want a change. If INEC refuses to cancel the election, it should go back to the old results where PDP was leading”.

Imo boils as PDP thugs go on rampage

Hundreds of hoodlums suspected to be hired by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Monday went on rampage in Owerri, the Imo State capital, attacking supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and damaging vehicles and other property.

The thugs who took over major streets in the capital city, forced passersby and commuters to chant anti-Okorocha slogan and those who failed to comply or found with Okorocha’s campaign insignia were severely beaten up.

At the headquaters of the Rochas Campaign Organization, the rampaging hoodlums attacked everyone at sight and destroyed APC campaign buses and billboards after they failed to gain entrance into the premises.

They also demanded the cancellation of the governorship election over alleged irregularities while displaying placards with various inscriptions such as ‘Ihedioha is our man’, ‘Rochas must go’, ‘we don’t want APC in Imo’, ‘say no to Moslem party’, among others.

However when contacted, the Director of Media of the Ihedioha Campaign Organisation, Barr. Enyinna Onuegbu, said the youths were sympathisers of the PDP who were protesting the electoral fraud committed by the Governor and not sponsored by the PDP as alleged.

According to him, “the youths were protesting the massive rigging of the governorship election and they were not sponsored by the PDP. They want INEC to declare Ihedioha the winner of the election

The State  Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Enwerem, said that the Police has advised the youths across all the political parties to remain calm until INEC declares the final result of the election.

When contacted over the development, the Director General of the Rochas Campaign Organisation, Barr. Iheukwumere Alaribe, said the PDP sponsored youths were protesting the failure of INEC to comply with their agreement to rig the election in their favour.

  • Police uncover bomb factory in Imo

There was tension yesterday in Imo State, following the discovery of a bomb factory, barely a few hours to the governorship and House of Assembly elections.

The police said the factory was discovered at Umuokirika, Ekwereazu in Aboh Mbaise Local Government.

Addressing reporters on behalf of Police Commissioner Austin Evbakvbokun, spokesman Andrew Enwerem alleged that two members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) were arrested as masterminds of the factory.

He said the suspects, Love Davidson from Nguru in Aboh Mbaise Local Government and Eze Charles from Nsukka in Enugu State, were arrested on April 3 at the factory. A suspect, Ekezie, is on the run.

Davidson, who claimed to be a “breakaway member” of MASSOB and a priest, whose home was allegedly used as the bomb factory, denied being an accomplice.

Some of the items recovered from the suspects are a drilling machine, gunpowder, tins of paints, thread and a bucket.

The officer in charge of the Bomb Squad, Omowaye Timothy, identified the items as explosive components.

Enwerem told reporters that the suspects may have been the masterminds of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) found in the state recently.

  • We need continuity in Imo

    We need continuity in Imo

Stakeholders in Imo State have said that there is considerable improvement in the well-being of the people since 2011 when Governor Rochas Okorocha became the governor of the state.

A member of Imo State Elders’ Council who is the Vice-Chairman of Imo State Elders’ Council in the United Kingdom (UK) and also Cultural Adviser to Igbo Union also in the UK, Nze Emmanuel Onukwugha Ejimonyeabala said the people are enjoying real benefits of democracy since the Rochas-led administration came on board because he is fulfilling his campaign promises to the people.

Nze Ejimonyeabala, the Epum Nde Amaimo Ancient Kingdom in Ikeduru Local Government Area of the state said the achievements of the governor have impacted positively on the lives of the people. Nze Ejimonyeabala stated this in a chat with reporters inLagos.

He said although all the political parties fielding candidates are making frenetic efforts to enhance their electoral chances, it is unarguable that the battle is clearly among two major contenders, namely the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chief Emeka Ihedioha and that of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rochas Okorocha.

Nze Ejimonyeabala said Okorocha’s achievements in the past four years will speak for him and swing the people’s votes to him which will make him the candidate to beat in tomorrow’s elections.

He noted that Governor Okorocha has creditably delivered on his 2011 election manifestos, saying “he greatly surpassed on several areas such as free education from primary to university levels and payment of stipends to primary and secondary school pupils.”

Nze Ejimonyeabala noted that Governor Okorocha has built modern schools and rehabilitated dilapidated ones across the state.

“Governor Okorocha has built over 27 modern storey-building school blocks one in each of the local government areas of the state.

“On roads, he has constructed several thousand kilometers of roads. All the local government areas are wearing new looks as a result of massive infrastructural development,” he said.

Other development projects which he said Governor Okorocha carried out included making Orlu, Okigwe, Amaraku, Nwaoriubi, Obowo and Mbaise attain township status, adding that “Governor Okorocha has established 27 new hospitals one in each of the local government areas, all completed waiting for inauguration. He built Ochiedike Dialysis and Diagnostic Centre Owerri, first of its kind in Nigeria, a university of nursing in Orlu, Imo State University permanent site in Mbaise/Ngor-Okpala; International University in Orlu, College of Advanced Professional Studies in Owerri, the Prestigious State House Chapel which is the first of its kind in Nigeria; Dark Blue Suite for civil servants, payment of N20,000 minimum wage, payment of arrears of pension to retired civil servants and prompt payment of salaries to civil servants in the state, among other achievements.”

To ensure food security, he said, Governor Okorocha has remained committed to agricultural development. For the first time in the history of the state, palm-for-palm planting and tomato growing have become a way of life for the people.

“The Community Government Council (CGC) is a genuine innovation towards community development; with the traditional rulers as heads of these governments which bring development to the grassroots.

“The Imo Security Network has made Imo State the best place to live. Imo Peace Advocates have brought justice, peace, joy and happiness to problematic areas and warring communities. He established specialised markets for traders and also established micro-finance banks to enhance businesses.”.

Praising the governor for his commitment to move the state forward, Nze Ejimonyeabala said: “Governor Okorocha is up and doing and a listening governor. What makes a good leader is no matter how many years you have been in politics, you should be able to listen to the advice and yearnings of the people, take the right ideas, study them and put them together for implementation. That’s what governance is all about.

“He is a man who wants to better the welfare of the downtrodden. Many technocrats in Imo State had maintained that free and compulsory education is not possible but he has proved them wrong.

“He is not into enhancing the people’s well-being alone. His wife, Nneoma has built 137 two-bedroom houses for needy widows across the state.

The London-trained economist and financial consultant disclosed that critics of the policies and programmes of the governor were ignorant of the impressive achievements recorded by the APC administration in Imo State.

“The Rochas’ fame for good governance is applauded by an anonymous many even beyond his state. He has, in a positive manner, touched the lives of the common man to the chagrin of his opponents,” he said.

On infrastructural development, he maintained that Okorocha has performed wonderfully well.

“Consider the number of roads he has constructed to link various communities. People are asking where the money is coming from.  Imo State has enough money to do whatever it wants to do. The unfortunate thing is that previous administrations had been siphoning the money meant for development and taking care of the welfare of the so-called godfathers who take enormous share of the state’s fund every month.

“Rochas has no godfathers except the Almighty God. He is really God-send because he is doing things the way the people want them done,” he said.

On the effort of the state government to mentally empower the people through free and compulsory education, Nze Ejimonyeabala stated that “the free education introduced by the government of Rochas Okorocha is one of the best people-oriented policies aimed at human capital development,” even as he added: “We want people to be educated. The more education and knowledgeable the people are, the better for the development of the society. Illiteracy is a disease. Gone are the days when we say education is expensive even though no one had tried ignorance.”

On the mandate for every local government to construct 15 kilometre roads, Nze Ejimonyeabala said: “If all the 27 local government areas in the state construct 15 kilometre roads, it will ensure rapid development. For instance the Nkwo-Amaimo-Ihitte-Umuozu Road will bring rural development in all the towns and villages which the road crisscrosses.”

Imo guber: Araraume declares support for Okorocha

Last minute efforts by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to reconcile the PDP governorship candidate, Rt. Hon Emeka Ihedioha and a former governorship aspirant of the party, Senator Ifeayin Araraume Thursday collapsed as the Senator, who is still laying claim to the governorship ticket, teamed up with All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Governor Rochas Okorocha.

The Senator, who commands large followership in the State, directed his supporters to vote for the APC candidate in the governorship election.

The directive which has dealt a damaging blow to the chances of the PDP candidate was hailed by APC chieftains, who described the Senator as a distinguished Imo indigene who puts the interest of the state ahead of party or personal considerations.

The Nation gathered reliably that Ararraume, may join the APC soon after the elections.

However, when contacted, the Media Assistant to the PDP stalwart, Dr. James Okoroma, said the Senator is not thinking of defecting to the APC but took the decision to ensure that at least the APC will have at least one state in the Southeast in the overall interest of Ndigbo.

According to him, “the Senator has not joined APC, what he did was to direct his supporters to vote for Governor Okorocha since Imo is the only APC state in the Southeast and he wouldn’t want Ndigbo to lose out completely”.

Meanwhile, notable members of PDP in the State have defected to APC; among them were two former governorship aspirants of the party, Chief Jerry Chukwueke and Chief Bethel Nzimako.
