Buhari assures of credible polls in Imo, Rivers, Edo

The President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, Tuesday assured of credible elections in the All Progressives Congress (APC) states of Imo, Rivers, Edo and others in the forthcoming governorship and House of Assembly elections.

General Buhari who was in Owerri, the Imo State capital on a thank-you visit, said that he was aware of the travails of  Governors Rotimi Amaechi, Rochas Okorocha and Adams Oshiomhole during the last election.

According to him, Oshiomole, Amaechi and Okorocha have shown uncommon courage and commitment in this system that has brought about this change and they should be commended.

He said, “the vote of the people is their strength and if the people’s vote is allowed to count, they can vote out any government that does not meet their expectations and this is what the APC government stands for.”

In his opening remarks, the APC National Chairman, Chief Odigie Oyegun, said that the leadership of the party was aware of the frustrations suffered by APC members during the Presidential election in Imo, Rivers and Edo States.

He said that “we are aware of the frustrations and intimidation you suffered during the last election and that is why the President-elect decided to come here in his first outing since he was announced the President-elect. But I assure you that it will never happen again. You can go out on Saturday the 11 of April and vote for the APC candidates without fear”.

Imo State Governor,Rochas Okorocha in his speech, said that Buhari’s victory has given the members of the APC a sense of relief, adding that their experience in the Presidential election was traumatising.

He urged the President-elect to ensure that there is a level playing ground for Ndigbo in his administration, adding that they had suffered untold hardship and marginalisation under the outgoing administration.

“We are in this struggle to better Nigeria, especially the Igbo nation and may I remind you that you are the President of all Nigerians and not the APC alone so your administration should carry everybody along,” he stated.

    President-elect for Imo, Rivers, others

President-elect Muhammadu Buhari has a packed schedule this week. He is leading the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaigns in some “battleground” states to lend his popularity to the push by APC candidates.

He is scheduled to visit Lagos, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Imo, Nasarawa and Benue states.

Others on the programme are Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo and Adamawa, a source told The Nation last night.

Ahead of his campaign trips, which will likely be in town hall format, Gen. Buhari has already called on Nigerians to vote APC candidates all the way.

The president-elect will be in Owerri, the Imo State capital, on Tuesday. Governor Rochas Okorocha, who is seeking reelection on the platform of the APC, in a statement signed by his Media Adviser Sam Onwuemeodo, said Gen. Buhari will be given a “heroic” reception at the Heroes’ Square, where he will address residents.

The governor, who held a thank-you rally in the state, to appreciate the people for their unalloyed support, noted that Imo people contributed significantly to the resounding victory.

The governor urged the people to turn out  en masse to receive Gen. Buhari irrespective of their political affiliations, adding that “in the new emerging order, everybody will be carried along and people will not be discriminated against on grounds of their political leaning”.

The Coalition for a Better Nigeria, in a statement at the weekend, said Gen. Buhari will visit the commercial capital on Wednesday and hold “a town hall meeting titled Change 2015”.

It will be the 5th national discourse of the Coalition to review Nigeria’s political history and progressives as well as Nigeria’s march to freedom with the 2015 polls.

Leaders of the party, including National Chairman Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Chief Bisi Akande and Senator Biyi Durojaiye, will be joined by Governors  Babatunde Fashola (Lagos) and Rauf Aregbesola (Osun) for the meeting at the Airport Hotel in Ikeja, the state capital.

“We expect some outings, possibly town hall meetings in some critically challening states but nothing has been finalised by way of programming,” spokesman of the APC Presidential Campaign Council Mallam Garba Shehu said yesterday.

Director of Organisation of  the APC Campaign Council Boss Mustapha said the full campaign programme will be out today.

Mustapha, who said he was in his home state of Adamawa campaigning for governorship candidate Jubrilla Bindow, said: “You know Gen. Buhari is no longer a candidate but president-elect.

“His programes are no longer completely in our hands. You know many countries are making contacts with him, among other engagements. By Monday, we will be able to give you a final programme.”

Elections into the governorship seats will be held in 29 states. Ondo, Edo, Ekiti, Kogi, Osun and Bayelsa states are excluded.

  • APC, APGA, others want Imo REC redeployed

APC, APGA, others want Imo REC redeployed

Major stakeholders in Imo State, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Chief Chidi Ibe, have called for the immediate redeployment of the State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), George Ada, for allegedly conniving with security agents to compromise the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

Ibe who recounted how he was manhandled by soldiers at the alleged instance of the Minister of State for Education, Professor Viola Onwuliri, accused the REC of compromising the process by handing over sensitive electoral materials to PDP candidates.

According to the Commissioner, the purported results released by the Commission do not represent the figures obtained by the various party agents in the state.

“We urgently demand the redeployment of the state REC and the overhaul of the entire INEC officials and adhoc staff in the state before the governorship election to forestall a repeat of the sham that happened during Presidential and National Assembly election.

“We saw how security agents and INEC staff assisted the PDP to compromise the process and we will resist any attempt to rig the governorship election by any person or group of persons”.

Also rejecting the results of the National Assembly elections in the state, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly and the APC Senatorial candidate for Imo North (Okigwe senatorial zone), Hon.Benjamin Uwajumogu, described the election as a “complete sham”.

The Speaker held that elections did not hold in the majority of the Local Government Areas, including Ehime Mbano, Isiala Mbano, and Okigwe Council Areas but results were released in the Council Areas by INEC in favour of the PDP.

Calling for the cancelation of the entire election, Uwajumogu alleged that “at Ehime Mbano LGA for instance, ballot papers and other election materials meant for Imo West (Owerri senatorial zone) were brought to Okigwe zone. On noticing the situation INEC quickly withdrew the ballot papers and this delayed the exercise.

“At about 7 pm the Electoral Officer announced that it was already late and the election was shifted to the following day and we all agreed to hold the election the following morning but the moment we left the Electoral Officer and the PDP candidate wrote the results of the election and took it to INEC and it was announced as the result from the zone”.

According to him, “the results that emanated in the purported Senatorial election in Imo North especially in the polling units of Ehime Mbano, Isiala Mbano, Onuimo, Okigwe and Ihitte/Uboma did not reflect the actual results with the party agents.

“I reject the entire results being circulated to have emanated from the said March 28th 2015 Senatorial election in the affected LGAs in Imo North. And we will not accept the result until a fresh election is conducted”.

In a similar vein, the APGA state Chairman, Barrister Peter Ezeobi, also called for the cancellation of the National Assembly elections alleging that the result announced did not correspond with the votes casted.

Addressing journalists, Ezeobi pointed out that election never took place in some wards in Orlu Local zone such as Isu, Oguta, Ohaji/Egbema, agwa, Asa Obirie and Obiti where he alleged that ballot boxes were snatched by some PDP thugs.

Ezeobi while calling for a fresh election to be conducted in the three senatorial zones in the state urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to improve on the performance of the card readers and check the high incidence of thuggery, violence and ballot snatching that marred the National Assembly elections.

  • Controversy trails elections in Imo

Controversy has trailed the conduct of the Presidential and National Assembly elections in Imo State.

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has called for the cancellation of the legislative elections over alleged irregularities.

Also rejecting the results, the Speaker of the House of Assembly and the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate for Imo North (Okigwe Senatorial Zone), Benjamin Uwajumogu, described the election as a “complete sham”.

He said elections did not hold in the majority of the local governments, including Ehime Mbano, Isiala Mbano and Okigwe councils, but results were released in the local governments by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Calling for the cancellation of the election, Uwajumogu alleged that “at Ehime Mbano Local Government, for instance, ballot papers and other election materials meant for Imo West (Owerri Senatorial Zone) were brought to Okigwe Zone. On noticing the situation, INEC withdrew the ballot papers and this delayed the exercise.

“About 7pm, the electoral officer announced that it was late and shifted the election to the following day. We agreed to hold the election the next day, but after we left, the electoral officer and the PDP candidate wrote the results and took it to INEC and it was announced as the result from the zone.”

He went on: “The results, which emanated from the purported senatorial election in Imo North, especially at the polling units of Ehime Mbano, Isiala Mbano, Onuimo, Okigwe and Ihitte/Uboma did not reflect the results of the party agents.

“I reject the results being circulated to have emanated from the March 28 Senatorial Election in the affected councils in Imo North. We will not accept the result. A fresh election should be conducted.”

The APGA Chairman, Peter Ezeobi, called for the cancellation of the election, alleging that it did not correspond with the votes cast.

Addressing reporters, Ezeobi, a lawyer, said election never took place in some wards in Orlu Local Government, such as Isu, Oguta, Ohaji/Egbema, Agwa, Asa Obirie and Obiti where he alleged ballot boxes were snatched by suspected PDP thugs.

He called for a fresh election in the senatorial zones and urged INEC to improve on the performance of the card readers.

Ezeobi said security agents should check the high incidence of thuggery, violence and ballot snatching, which marred the election.

  • Okorocha demands cancellation of polls in six LGs

Okorocha demands cancellation of polls in six LGs

Gov Rochas Okorocha of Imo State on Monday protested the outcome of elections in Imo, alleging the use of soldiers in the exercise.

Okorocha told journalists in Owerri that soldiers freely molested and harassed innocent people and barred them from exercising their franchise.

He further alleged that ballot boxes were snatched and two people shot at Amala in Ngor Okpala local government area and another in Owerri Municipal.

According to him, one of the victims died while the other person was lying critical at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri.

Okorocha described the election of Saturday as the “worst act of militarization of democracy’’.

He said that what was witnessed in Imo was a far cry from the expectations of the people.

He, therefore, called for the cancellation of elections in Ngor Okpala, Aboh Mbaise, Ehime Mbano, Isiala Mbano, Ohaji/Egbema and Oru East local governments, cliaming that no election held in the areas due to the lack of materials.

Okorocha, however, denied assaulting any INEC official but trailed the commission’s convoy when he learnt that they killed two persons in a motor accident and made away with the corpses.

NAN reports that the governor had earlier complained of the arrest and detention of his Senior Special Adviser, Mr Sam Onwuemeodo, and the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Chidi Ibeh, during the elections.

  • Imo PDP leaders decamp to APC

Imo PDP leaders decamp to APC

The re-election bid of the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, Thursday received a significant boost with the dumping of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) by political leaders in the state and his endorsement by major political groups from the three senatorial zones of the state.

The influential political groups from Orlu, Okgwe and Owerri zones, known as the Coalition of Imo Mainstream Politicians for Good Governance, are made up of the Orlu Political Consultative Assembly (OPOCA), Owerri Zone Mandate Group and the Okigwe Political Leaders Congress.

The Coalition during a press conference in Owerri, the Imo State capital, said that it decided to dump the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a result of the Governor’s sterling performance and the irredeemable corruption in the PDP.

In a statement jointly signed by the Coordinator of the Coalition of Imo Mainstream Politicians for Good Governance, Chief Rex Anunobi, also known as Sokom, the National President of OPOCA, Dr. Samfo Nwankwo and the President General, Owerri Zone Mandate, Dr. Vitalis Ajumbe and the President Okigwe Political Leaders Forum, Dr. Kelechi Okpaleke, the group maintained that “the APC is the only hope for a truly democratic and corruption free Nigeria”.

The political leaders further disclosed that they were inspired to join the APC because of the unprecedented achievements recorded by the Okorocha’s administration within a short time in office, adding that “the Governor had dazed his critics by the successful implementation of the free education programme, the construction of 27 new general hospitals across the 27 Local Government Areas of the State, the construction of 15 kilometer rural roads in all the LGAs”.

They also added that the APC led administration in the state; unlike previous administrations has spread development to all the nook and crannies of the state, especially the rural areas that were hitherto abandoned.

They also dismissed other political parties in the governorship race, stating that the status of their governorship candidates is not yet clear as they are still locked in legal battle, “the PDP and APGA are yet to have valid governorship candidates as they are still in court”.

The Coalition, further accused the PDP of planning to continue its “share the money syndrome” alleging that the governorship candidate of the party has promised aspirants who lost the governorship primaries a N35 billion refund when he gets to power.

They promised to mobilize Imo people from the three zones to vote Governor Okorocha “because he has done Imo State proud with his performance. Imo people need the best. Imo people deserve the best and the best is Governor Okorocha.”

  • Women, security operatives clash at Jonathan’s town hall meeting

Hundreds of women protesting the takeover of the Women Development Centre in Owerri, the Imo State capital for President Jonathan’s town hall meeting with a faction of traditional rulers headed by Eze Cletus Ilomuanya, were Tuesday teargased by stern looking security men who barricaded the road leading to the Centre.

The women, who defied all entreaties by the heads of the security agencies in the state, took over the roads leading to the venue of the town hall meeting, chanting anti Jonathan slogans.

Scores of them were wounded, while several others suspected to be asthmatic fainted after inhaling the tear gas fume.

The Director General of the Centre, Hon Ndidi Iheme, stated that the over 2500 women drawn from across the 27 Local Government Areas of the State, were billed for a training at the centre on the conduct and role of women in the 2015 general elections.

She stated further that the centre has been locked up for the past five days without any explanation, adding that, “there is no court injunction whatsoever restraining us from having access to our office but we have been locked out for over five days without explanation.”

According to her, “we have slated a training for the women today at the centre and we came this morning to start but were denied entrance by the security men. We were not given any prior notice about the President’s visit or any information that the centre was going to be used for any town hall meeting of any sort and we have resolved that we are not going to allow this intimidation.”

However, The Nation gathered that President Jonathan’s decision to visit the Eze Ilomuanya led faction of the Traditional Rulers’ Council may have provoked the authorities in the state.

Ilomuanya, who was deposed as a traditional ruler by the state Governor, Rochas Okorocha, over his romance with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), was recognized by President Jonathan, obviously to spite the state government.

  • Relief as Imo, Abia end 50 years dispute

Relief as Imo, Abia end 50 years dispute

For over five decades, two communities in Imo and Abia states could not iron out their differences over land. Lives were lost and properties destroyed as the crisis lasted, but thanks to the deputy governors of both states, the conflict has ended. OKODILI NDIDI reports

The hostilities have ended and both communities reconciled but at a huge cost. Apart from the rancour and distrust between residents of Umuoma-Umudibia in Ihitte-Uboma Local Government Area of Imo State and Umudiawa-Ofeiyi in Abia, lives and property were lost in the land dispute spanning over half a century. Even on the day of reconciliation, youths of both communities had raised clenched fists and weapons. The deputy governors of both states, Eze Madumere (Imo) and Chief Emeka Ananaba (Abia) helped to calm nerves and bring the age-long crisis to an end.

The dispute had defied all peace accords as both communities remained adamant on their claim of ownership of the disputed plot of land. The hostility resumed recently after years of respite when the Abia community invaded the land and started building a police post. This would have resulted in another bloody clash between the two communities but for the intervention of the Imo State Deputy Governor, Eze Madumere and his Abia counterpart, Chief Emeka Ananaba.

The two communities have been locked in dispute over the actual delineation of the boundary between the two sister states. This has led to endless legal battle, which has further threatened peaceful coexistence between the two communities.

Responding to a ‘Save Our Soul’ message sent to the state government by the Imo community over repeated violent clashes between the communities, the Imo Deputy Governor led the Boundary Commission to the troubled communities and subsequently resolved the age-long dispute.

The traditional ruler of the Imo community,  Eze M. O Onyenukwuru and the Transition Committee Chairman of  Ihitte-Uboma Council Area, Hon Emma Ejiogu, told  the delegation about the continuous  provocations against their community by the Abia community since the boundary dispute started.

According to them, all efforts made by the community to bring a lasting peace to the disputed area had been rebuffed by their neighbor, who they accused of  adopting violence as the solution to the land dispute and as a result, unleashing mayhem on the community.

The Deputy Governor and members of the delegation who paid an  unscheduled visit to the disputed area, were shocked that the Abia community had already trespassed on the disputed plot of land and was building a police station on the land.

Mistaken the visit of the Imo State delegation as an ambush on plot of land, the armed from the Abia community, who had been posted to watch over the land,  attacked members of the delegation.

Worried by the alleged ambush of the ceremony by the Imo state government contingent, the belligerent Umudiwa-Ofeiyi youths, who had gathered in anticipation of any eventuality, however, took no time in engaging with their Umuoma-Umudibia counterparts in fisticuffs in the shouting match that ensued.

Sensing danger, the Imo Deputy Governor immediately sent for his Abia state counterpart, Chief Emeka Ananaba, who rushed to the scene and prevailed on the warring community to sheathe their swords and embrace peace.

The two Deputy Governors quickly went into a closed door meeting after which a truce was brokered between the warring communities.

Addressing the people shortly after the meeting, the Abia Deputy Governor Ananaba noted that they were constitutionally empowered to mediate in boundary disputes affecting their respective states and had finally resolved to maintain peace in the affected area and end further hostilities.

The Abia Deputy Governor, who recalled the blossoming ‘brotherly’ relationship existing between the two states since the splitting of the old Imo state, reminded them that “as brothers, who share genealogical traits it is inappropriate to resort to violence because violence remain an ill wind that blows no one any good”.

Madumere, in his response, re-echoed the earlier call for peace by his Abia state counterpart, adding that it was only when there is peace that the issue of meaningful reconciliation could be achieved.

He further announced that after a brief meeting with his colleague, it was agreed that the erection of the Police post in the area would be a combined effort of the two inter-state communities (Umuoma-Umudibia in Ihitte-Uboma and Umudiawa-Ofeiyi) for the effective security of their lives and property in the area.

According to him, the process of ensuring that a lasting peace returned to the area would continue till after the ongoing electioneering process before the National Boundary Commission would be invited to resolve the dispute amicably.

The Speaker, Imo state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Uwajumogu, in his speech, while promising to offset hospital bills of those injured in the aftermath of the fracas, also called on the relevant security agencies to establish their presence in the area to forestall further crisis.

He appealed for the continued peaceful co-existence of the two communities to enable the peace process to succeed.

Uwajumogu restated the readiness of the Imo State government and the Umuoma-Umudibia community towards ensuring the sustenance of peace in the disputed area, while urging stakeholders in the crisis to abide by the decisions reached at the meeting.

  • A royal cleansing in Imo

    A royal cleansing in Imo

After a theatre of protests and a military siege, monarchs in royal gear, flowing robes, dangling beads, ivory staff but without their red caps, showed up to purify the Imo State Government House. OKODILI NDIDI reports

The state seat of power has hosted quite a sequence of drama lately. First, some women clad in black, later said to be widows, staged a protest. It was not about any harsh times, which sometimes take a toll on women living without their spouses and breadwinners. It was soon clear that the women in black were working for the Minister of State for Education, Prof Viola Onwuliri, who had fallen out with the state governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha.

On the fateful day, the rampaging women tried to overwhelm  security men attached to the Government House in an attempt to gain entry into the premises and confront the governor for “harassing” the Minister, who is also a widow.

The protest turned sour when another group of women loyal to the governor confronted them for wishing the governor dead by writing his name on the mock coffin.

Soldiers and other armed security men were later drafted to the scene and eventually, the tumultuous crowd were dispersed but not before many of the women were wounded and properties destroyed.

The governor, who arrived at the Government House at the peak of the chaos, said it was a plot conceived by the Minister to incite crisis in the state. Okorocha added that the Minister claimed to be enjoying the support of President Goodluck Jonathan in undermining the governor’s office and insulting Imo people, warning that the patience of the people should not be tried beyond limits.

When the dust settled, traditional rulers in the state also visited the seat of power to play their part. They came clad in their royal gear, flowing robes, dangling beads, ivory staff but without their red caps. It was an unusual gathering of traditional rulers at the Imo Government House. Their esoteric dresses and drawn faces implied that their mission was far from the usual one to the seat of power. Their mission was to cleanse the Government House which was said to be desecrated by a group of protesting women who invaded it with a mock coffin.

Meanwhile, the traditional rulers who were form  Ideato South Council Area of the state, where the governor hails from, condemned the  act by Onwuliri who they said mobilised the women to undermine ”the good works of Governor Okorocha in the  state.

Speaking on behalf of the monarchs, the chairman of Ideato Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Ethelbert I. Ajaraogu disclosed that the entire monarchs had earlier visited the traditional ruler of Amuzi, the hometown of the Minister in Ahiazu Mbaise Council Area of the state, Eze Innocent Ugochukwu, to caution the Minister against a repeat of such act in order to avoid the “wrath of the land”.

Eze Ajaraogu pointed out that “Governor Okorocha was duly elected into power by the entire Imo people and has performed excellently well in the past three and half years which has earned him the support of Imo people for a second term in office during the oncoming election”.

He wondered “how any well-meaning indigenes of the state will want to oppose a man who has the well-being of the masses at heart”.

He said, “We came to the Government House to neutralise whatever evil such act may have attracted and to jointly pour libation to cleanse the Douglas House and pray for divine guidance and protection for the governor”.

He posited further: “Our son, Governor Okorocha did not cheat anyone to come to the Government House but was duly elected by the entire Imo people, so no one will hurt him. The people are with him and he shall come again.”

Also speaking, the Deputy Chairman, Eze Peter E. Ewuziem noted that for over 40 years he has been on the throne, adding:

“This is the first time anyone carried a coffin to the domain of either civilian or military leader, any person who planned this evil must receive it back”.

Also, in a separate meeting of the traditional rulers across the state, the monarchs demanded an apology from the Minister for desecrating the land.

The monarchs observed that the action of the Minister, which has been widely criticized, amounted to a desecration of the traditions and customs of the people, which they said will not be tolerated by the traditional institution.

The chairman of the Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Samuel Ohiri, stated that the activities and utterances of the Minister concerning issues in the state lately has been unbecoming of a woman of her position.

He said, “We are still mourning the death of her husband, Professor Celestine Onwuliri, who was a worthy son of the state but since after his death, Viola has gone wild, going about the place making trouble and getting involved in matters that do not concern her.”

He continued that, saying, “She is not the only female Minister in the country; she should borrow a leaf from other women who have not used their position to incite crisis in their states. Viola has the right to join any political party and work for any candidate of her choice but she must not desecrate the land.”

Ohiri added further that the traditional rulers are still wondering why the Minister, who is not running for any elective position, should be the one overheating the  state, “we don’t know Viola’s business in the state but we want to confirm if the mock coffin she was carrying was that of her late husband or any other Imo son she wish dead.”

His words: “We have resolved that she should tender an unreserved apology to Imo people for ridiculing the customs of the people. She has the rights to do her politics but she must not desecrate the laws of the land.”

However, when contacted, the Media Assistant to the Minister, Mr. Emmanuel Emeruem described the allegation as blackmail from the Government House, conceived to tarnish the image of the Minister.

He said, “Nobody carried any mock coffin; they were just widows from across the state, who were protesting the injustice meted out against one of their own before they were attacked by thugs sponsored by the state government.”
