  • Ajimobi inaugurates 320 tractors to boost agric

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi yesterday inaugurated 320 tractors to boost agriculture.

He said his administration is determined to revolutionise agriculture as a means of alleviating poverty.

The 320 Massey Ferguson tractors were bought by the state government in conjunction with the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON). They are to be distributed to 20 local government councils at 16 per council.

The remaining 13 local government councils last November benefited from the 39 mini-refuse trucks also procured by the state in conjunction with ALGON.

Acknowledging ALGON’s collaboration with his administration to improve the state, Ajimobi described local governments as veritable avenues for empowering the people.

He said: “This is why any government desirous of empowering people at the grassroots must partner local governments. Councils are essential in networking governmental aspirations in the provision of public amenities, such as good roads, rural integration and transportation facilities. This synergy, which has become the testament of our administration, gave birth to this event.”

Emphasising the importance of agriculture, the governor said: “Not only is it a major kernel of our cardinal programmes, it receives daily attention of the government in our constant search for succour for our people.”

He said agriculture would provide job opportunities, combat hunger and alleviate poverty.

Ajimobi said an agriculture-centred economy could eliminate crime and combat social vices, enhance commerce and put smiles on the faces of the people.

He said: “Since our administration swore an oath to provide succour for our people, we are merely fulfilling our promises.”

The governor urged the people to support his administration in maintaining peace, saying: “We cannot afford to allow divisive politicians sow seeds of discord in our midst. Development thrives only in an atmosphere of concord.”

ALGON State Chairman Yekeen Popoola said the project would assist farmers and enable his colleagues to achieve some of the cardinal goals of the Ajimobi administration, which are agriculture and rural development.

  • Ex-NBA secretary inaugurates new office

    Ex-NBA secretary inaugurates new office

It is not often that a mere visit by someone is considered an “investment” in the life of another.

Such importance can only be attached to a call by a very important personality under special circumstances.

That was the situation when the Founder and Presiding Bishop of the Living Faith Church Worldwide (aka Winners Chapel), Dr. David Oyedepo, visited a deacon in his church, former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) General Secretary, Dele Adesina (SAN).

The visit was for the dedication of a new office complex in Ikeja, newly-built by the lawyer.

It was an event that lasted less than 30 minutes with few people in attendance, but for Adesina, it was worth a lot.

The senior lawyer expressed his deep appreciation to Dr Oyedepo for taking time to come and pray over the building, saying his joy was “more than full.”

“I know your schedule,” he said while thanking the bishop. “To say that it is tight is an understatement.”

He added: “So, if it is one second that you spend in this place, it’s more than a century. The value that I attach to the time you are here is an investment in my life for life.

“It’s an investment that will make this practice, this brand, this name a generational one.”

The two-storey building is located on 109 Opebi Road, Ikeja, Lagos. Beautifully designed, the ground floor is made up of a main reception, a private reception, and five offices.

The first floor has a well-stocked law library, a conference room and three offices.

The second floor is made up of the principal solicitor’s office and four other offices, all of them very spacious and fully equipped.

Administrative management is handled by the deacon’s wife, Mrs Adetokunbo Adesina, whose office is on the ground floor.

Adesina praised his wife for always being there for him, joking that he wrote her a love letter a few days before the dedication.

He said: “I must not end my short comments without thanking somebody who is so special that God has given to me as a wife, as a mother, as a friend, as a companion.

“She has been a very strong pillar of support as every achievement we have in life, God always speaks to her first. We are now into a new phase as a family and as a profession,” he said.

Bishop Oyedepo added that he would ensure the love letter is read out in church during service. “That your love letter will be read in church on Sunday,” he joked, eliciting laughter from everyone.

Among the guests were former NBA President Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), former Secretary of Health Prince Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi, activist-lawyer Mr Femi Falana (SAN) and chairman, NBA Ikeja Branch Onyekachi Ubani.

After being introduced to them, Dr Oyedepo joked that he would love to be a lawyer. “When I retire, I will like to join your profesion,” he said.

While greeting Falana with a warm hug, the bishop joked that he was actually taller than the activist-lawyer.

“I thought I was short. I have seen someone I am taller than,” he said.

Adesina thanked Olanipekun and Adelusi-Adeluyi for the roles they played in his success.

His words: “I have two people here that I deliberately invited, apart from my other friends: the former minister and his wife. They are like our parents in Lagos.

“Issues of life and the profession, I do ask from them from time to time. So, I said they must be here and I know they must have cancelled a lot of appointments to be here.

“Chief Olanipekun and I have become inseparable. God brought us together. I served under him. He was president of the bar, while I was the General Secretary. Since then, we have become inseparable.

“Issues in the legal profession and concerning the practice and our family lives, the children – he’s always the first point of call.

“The bishop once said that when one is flying a road that is not familiar, look for someone who knows that road well. Let him be your pathfinder. Where he stops you stop. Where he slows down, you also slow down. Where he speeds, you speed.

“I am passing through a phase I know he (Olanipekun) has gone before, and God has made him a worthy leader in the legal profession. I believe he has contributed and is still contributing.

“I am also happy that he is physically here in spite of his busy schedule. He is one legal practitioner that traverses the entire nation within one week.”

Earlier, Dr Oyedepo had urged Adesina to use the legal profession to help tackle corruption, saying he is better positioned to do so, being a lawyer and a deacon.

Responding, Adesina said: “I want to reiterate over and over again that wherever I am, I see myself as the light of the gospel that must lighten even the legal profession itself.

“I believe that the purpose for which God planted me in this profession is still on the path of fulfillment.

“Like you (Oyedepo) always say, life itself is a phase and I believe this is another phase of our lives in this profession.”

After praying that the law firm contribute to the nation’s advancement, Dr Oyedepo urged lawyers to help rid the country of corruption.

Describing graft as the Nigeria’s ‘greatest challenge’, he said the legal profession is better positioned to fight it.

Dr Oyedepo said the battle against official sleaze would never be won, unless the people stand up against it.

The bishop said: “Our greatest challenge is corruption. Please join in the war against it. Except people stand up to it, it will be there forever,” he said.

According to him, only Nigerians can make their country a better place, as the rest of the world is battling with their own problems.

“We should all endeavour, in whatever we do, to ensure we are adding value to the system.

“Nigeria is a great place, but we require great contributors to actually actualise its greatness.

“So, when we contribute, it becomes easy to move this nation forward. Nobody is coming to move this nation forward for us.”

We were there for two hours and then took off and came to Lagos safely.”

Sanusi maintained that just as the people were celebrating the projects he initiated, he was equally thankful to God who had spared his family any untoward agony and for being with the people who were highly awaiting his presence.

He said these were in addition to the 35 transformers given to various communities this year.

Arebesola said the past administration completed only 48 electrification projects in the seven and a half years it spent in office.

He said his administration’s performance has “clearly shown the difference” between them.

The governor said the provision of the Injection Station was a demonstration of his administration’s commitment to providing stable electricity supply.

He said the state government went out of its way to provide the transformer, even though it was the responsibility of the Federal Government.

Describing the project as a reward of democracy, Aregbesola said: “In our recent past, whenever the government was mentioned, what came to the people’s minds was some far away institution.

“The reason for their negative view of the government stems from the years of poor governance they were subjected to by the previous administration. For us, government is owned by the people. It is an institution for improving their welfare. We believe the task of government is to improve the lives of the people by delivering social goods that have direct positive impacts on their daily existence.

“Our achievements in different areas so far have evidently convinced our people that we are truly in a different era; an era of responsible and focused government.

“This administration is one that keeps its promises to the people. Our government is one that puts the people first and keeps them in focus. We will continue to show our people that our word to them is a sacred oath that we will continue to honour.

“We are resolved to restore the reputation of government as the government of the people, for the people and by the people.”

He said his administration’s dream of making life comfortable for the people could hardly be achieved without electricity.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural and Community Development, Mr. Kunle Ige, said the project cost N125 million.

He said many communities that had lost hope on electricity have heaved a sigh of relief, courtesy of the Aregbesola administration.
