    Shell inaugurates $3m centre at UNN

    A partnership between the University of Nigeria (UNN) and Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) Joint Venture has delivered a $3million centre for the study, management and control of environmental issues at the Enugu campus of the institution.

    Country Chairman of Shell Companies in Nigeria, Mr Mutiu Sunmonu, represented by General Manager Sustainable Development and Community Relations, Mr Nedo Osanyande, inaugurated the complex whose construction started in 2010 with the donation of an initial $1million by SPDC.

    The Centre for Environmental Management and Control (CEMAC) houses furnished laboratories, classrooms, lecture theatres outfitted with multimedia facilities as well as staff offices.

    UNN Vice-Chancellor, Prof Bartho Okolo, said the building was a example of Public-Private Partnership (PPP), targeted at complementing the efforts of the Federal Government in developing infrastructure in tertiary institutions.

    He maintained that the facility would help improve the practical training of students in the field of environmental studies as well as serve as a capacity building centre for Shell and other exploratory firms in West Africa.

    “Blending theory with practice is a major way of advancing excellence in education,” he said.

    Okolo thanked Shell for the donation that he said was comprehensive in terms of the structure and functional furnishing.

    CEMAC is one of over 400 projects embarked upon by the management of UNN between 2010 and 2013 as the institution reported to the government’s primary funding mechanism, Tertiary Education Trustfund, at a stakeholders’ meeting for institutions in the Southeast zone held on March 11 also at the Enugu campus.

    Sunmonu said the donation was a demonstration of Shell’s interest in environmental matters, which informed its commitment to build the centre to assemble the best brains in the field of environmental studies.

    Guinness inaugurates water project

    Guinness Nigeria Plc has inaugurated its Safe Water for Africa (SWA) project at Sabo, Ikorodu, Lagos.

    At the event, its Director, Corporate Relations, Guinness Nigeria Plc, Mr. Sesan Sobowale, noted that access to potable water would go a long way in combating the prevalence of water borne diseases among the citizenry adding that the project is aimed at creating a positive impact in the community.

    He said: “This is the kind of project that Guinness Nigeria is pleased to be a part of because it resonates with our ‘Water of Life’ programme which is part of our contribution to solving this global menace in line with the UN Millennium Development Goals to halve the number of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and sanitation by 2015.”

    Chairman, Ikorodu Local Government Area, Hon. Sheriff Anipole, applauded Guinness Nigeria for selecting his constituency as a beneficiary of the project.

    He lamented that the members of the community have suffered long from lack of access to potable water. “The Ikorodu community and many other parts of our local government area were suffering from shortage of potable drinking water. Many people here relied on sources of water which quality cannot be guaranteed. We can therefore assure you that this water you are providing for us is a blessing for our people, indeed, this project reinforces a saying among our people that water is life.”

  • Ogoja council inaugurates youth centre

    The Executive Chairman of Ogoja Local Government Area, Rita Agbo Ayim, has inaugurated a youth centre at Ukamasha in Ishibori Area.

    The centre, which was donated by the World Bank with the effort of Governor Liyel Imoke through the office of the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Patrick Ugbe, was to help engage the youths positively.

    Speaking during the exercise, the Chairman lauded Imoke and the World Bank for the project and thanked the ministry for their effort in making sure that the centre was sited in Ukamasha.

    The council boss advised the youths to make judicious use of the project.

    She promised the people that she will work to sustain the centre, as she assured them of her total readiness to collaborate with the people.

     

  • Orelope-Adefulire inaugurates health centre

    Lagos State Deputy Governor, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire and Chairman of Mosan-Okunola Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon Abdur Rasheed Abiodun Mafe have the laid foundation for the upgrading of the Akinyele Primary Health Care Centre and the Akinyele Area Office at the Low Cost Housing Estate, Abesan, Lagos.

    The health centre, a project of the Mosan-Okunola LCDA, is to ensure improvement in residents’ health care.

    Orelope-Adefulire hailed the council boss for putting in place programmes that would not only complement but also enhance the health care delivery in the state government.

    “I will call on other council chairmen in the state to emulate the Chairman of Mosan/Okunola LCDA and learn from him,” she said.

    She reaffirmed Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola’s administration’s commitment to ensuring best health care delivery in the state.

    According to her, the constructions of various child maternal health centres in the state had contributed greatly in reducing maternal/child mortality.

    “I am happy to hear that 620 babies have been delivered at the Rauf Aregbesola Medical Centre, Okunola. Imagine what would have happened without that medical centre located in the area,” she said.

    Mafe said the Akinyele health centre was being upgraded to cater for the needs of residents of Abesan Housing Estate, as well as adjoining communities in the area.

    “We are happy at the success recorded at the Rauf Aregbesola Medical Centre at Okunola which today has led to 620 babies being delivered at the centre since its inception,” the council boss said.

    The council boss said his administration was committed to improving health care delivery in the council area to complement the healthcare delivery programme of the Fashola-led administration in the state.

  • CIBN chief inaugurates Advisory Board

    An Advisory Board of the Centre for Financial Studies (CFS), a subsidiary of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) and Lagos Business School of Pan African University was inaugurated at the weekend.

    CIBN President/Chairman of Council, Segun Aina who commissioned the board said it was meant to assist in producing new breed of bankers with requisite knowledge and skills to drive the financial services sector.

    He said the board has reputable personalities experienced in the banking profession. The members of the board include Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Deputy Governor, Economic Policy, Dr. Sarah Alade who serves as the Chairman; Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha; Director-General, Nigeria Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER), Prof. Olufemi Taiwo; Managing Director/Chief Executive, First Bank of Nigeria Plc, Mr. Olabisi Onasanya; Rector, Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, Dr. Mrs. Cele Njoku; and Registrar/Chief Executive, Dr. ’Uju Ogubunka. The Administrator of the Centre, Mr. Habila Amos, serves as the Secretary of the board.

    The CIBN has equally entered into strategic partnership with Lagos Business School/Pan Atlantic University, with a view to improving the quality of manpower in the financial services sector.

    This is coming on the heels of the signing of an Affiliation Agreement between the CFS, a subsidiary of the CIBN.

    Aina said the affiliation will among other things enable CFS and LBS/PAU to strategically engage in a number of activities to achieve the objectives of the CFS. Such roles include engaging in research on topical and contemporary issues in the banking and finance industry with a view to advancing the frontiers of knowledge.

    It will also enable both parties engage in policy advocacy by generating position papers on relevant and topical issues in banking and finance; serve as a game changer in the quest for upgrading the competencies of banking and finance executives not only in Nigeria.

    Aina noted that the CFS was set up to address the identified gaps in the banking and finance industry. “After identifying the gaps, we saw the needs to improve the skills and competencies of future executives in Nigerian banking and financial services industry and that was what prompted the Institute to set up the CFS which is aimed at being a game changer in education and learning in the banking and finance industry,” he said.

    On the other hand, Dean, Lagos Business School, Enase Okonedo explained that the development would enable the two affiliating institutions to focus more on research and seminars that would enhance the development of professionalism in the industry and indeed, the economy.

    “The collaboration would help prepare bankers to adequately deal with the challenges posed by the peculiarities in the Nigerian banking and finance industry”, she assured.

    Dr. Alade applauded the development noting that it would further revolutionalise research in the industry while providing financial institutions the opportunity to have access to enough skilled workforce.

    “I am happy that this is happening at this time when the banking industry has put together a competency framework that defines the competency standards for people that want to occupy top positions in the industry,” she said.

    Senator Tinubu inaugurates AFKAR Press

    Senator Oluremi Tinubu yesterday inaugurated the ultra modern, printing and publishing outfit acquired by AFKAR Printing and Publishing Company Limited. The company is located on ACME road, Ogba, Ikeja, Lagos.

    She said the company had been in existence for a few years, but it acquired modern printing and publishing machines a couple of months ago, adding that with the cutting-edge machines, the company would compete with any other printing and publishing company anywhere in the world, in terms of quality of finished work.

    She urged Nigerians to patronise the company.

    Mrs Tinubu said she was impressed with the company’s clean environment and the workers right from the first man at the gate.

    She praied the quality of the printed works, which ranged from magazines, text books and exercise books, urging the management to maintain the standard, which she adjudged as “very high”.

    While cutting the tape to declare the new machines open for business, the senator prayed to God to sustain the firm and make it profitable for its owners.

    Conducting the Senator and other invited guests round the expansive printing company, the Managing Director, Mr Alan Ballard, said the company specialises in commercial printing; publishing, light packaging as well as graphic designs.

    He said the commercial printing covers brochures, posters, magazines, leaflets, annual reports, posters, calendars and cards, while publishing covers books, journals, magazines and catalogues.

    Under light packaging, its operations cover pharmaceutical packs, small boxes, bespoke boxes and specialist die cutting and folding. The outfit offers graphic design and pre-press services.

    Ballard said with the latest Heidelberg press just launched by Senator Tinubu, the company was set to guarantee Nigerians products of international quality on schedule and at affordable prices.

    “The Heidelberg presses will reproduce your publishing requirements in full colour with the guarantee that your printed materials will be consistent quality product,” he added.

    Other cutting-edge machines at the company include: Heidelberg speedmaster; Heidelberg XL 75-5F; Heidelberg GTO 52; Folding machine, Binding machine, Heidelberg Varimatrix 105 CS, an automatic die cutting machine and Epson for colour proofing, among others.

    Present at the launch were the company’s Production and General Manager, Mr Adewunmi Adeyoju Jacob, the legal and personnel manager, Mrs Falaiye Florence Adesola and Mr Taiwo A. Ogunsakin, the company’s marketing manager, among others.

  • Edo Speaker inaugurates mobile clinic

    Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon Uyi Igbe, inaugurated a mobile clinic and free health care services provided by Hon Elizabeth Ativie representing Uhunmwode Constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly.

    The speaker said all dilapidated roads in need of government attention would be fixed when contractors are mobilised to site.

    “Government is aware of the state of the roads. We are aware that we are in the rainy season and much work can not be done in the rainy season. I can however guarantee Edo people that immediately when the rain subside that action will begin again on the roads in every area of the state”.

    “Very soon men and machines will be on site to carry on with the good works the state government has started.”

    Mrs. Ativie said the provision of the fully equipped mobile clinic van was part of her promise during her electioneering campaign to provide free Health care services to the People of Uhunmwode.

    She said: “Our people are rural dwellers who are financially challenged and have no ready access to quality health care services.Consequently our people patronize quack medicine sellers and untrained traditional Birth attendants and as a result die of preventable sickness and diseases especially among women and children”.

    “The two weeks Free Health care Services to the 10 wards of Uhunmwode is to improve the health status of the people. The mobile clinic is fitted with state of the art facilities with medical pesonnels mobilized to ensure the optimal improvement in the health needs of the people.”

    In his remark, the Edo state chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association NMA, Dr. Emmanuel Ighodaro, said health care is very expensive and enjoined the people to embrace the free health care programme by making themselves available for testing, medical check up and treatment.

    Diamond Bank has launched a school banking proposition to cater for the financial needs of all school levels from crèche, primary to secondary institutions.

    In a statement, the bank said the proposition, called Banking-in-a-Box, would provide solution to the needs of various stakeholders within the school value chain, which includes schools students, parents, staff and proprietors.

    The bank’s head, corporate communications, Ayona Trimnell said the initiative comprises many components that will be released in phases. The components, she further revealed includes school fees loans for parents, low cost transactional and collections solution and current account for schools.

    IBB inaugurates agric skill acquisition centre

    Former military President Ibrahim Babangida has inaugurated the multi-million naira agricultural skill acquisition centre constructed by Sokoto State government at Milgoma village, Bodinga Local Government Area.

    Babaginda, who began a two-day official visit to the state, commended, Governor Aliyu Wamakko, for establishing the ultra-modern centre.

    He said that agriculture plays key role in the socio-economic development of the state and the nation at large.

    “We came to Sokoto, we saw and we have testified that Wamakko is executing people-oriented projects. He needs the support of the people of the state to continue to deliver the dividends of democracy,’’ he said.

    Babaginda, who described Wammako as “a worthy successor’’, urged him not to relent in his efforts to develop the state. All the projects the Governor has been executing directly affect the masses and this laudable gesture should be sustained,’’ Babangida said.

    In his remark, Wamakko said the Centre would train 3,000 people from the seven Local Government Areas of Sokoto South Senatorial zone per annum.

    The inauguration of a new Governing Council for Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso holds today.

    The Chancellor of the university is the National Leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council, is Prof. Wale Omole.

    In a statement made available to The Nation yesterday, the Acting Registrar of the institution, Rev. Jacob Agboola, said:” Following the constitution of the new Governing Council of LAUTECH by Visitors to the university, the executive governors of Oyo and Osun states, the public, workers and students of LAUTECH are hereby informed that the inauguration of the new Governing Council will hold on July 12 at 10am in the Council Chamber, Senate Building, LAUTECH, Ogbomoso.”
