  • Court jails man for trafficking in Indian hemp

    A Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced Adamu Umar, 27, to nine months’ imprisonment for trafficking in Cannabis Sativa (Indian hemp).

    The judge, Justice Ayokunle Faji, said yesterday that the convict was found guilty of the offence as charged by the prosecution, saying the sentence would begin from the date of his arrest.

    Prosecutor Mr. Jeremiah Aernan of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) arraigned the convict on a one-count charge of drug trafficking.

    He said the convict was arrested in Lagos, on September 15, following a tip-off.

    Aernan said the convict was arrested with packages of Cannabis Sativa (Indian hemp) weighing 300g.

    According to the prosecutor, Cannabis Sativa is classified as a restricted narcotics and its trafficking contravenes Section 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation, 2004.

    The convict pleaded guilty and begged for mercy.

    He promised to be of good behaviour if pardoned.

    The prosecutor tendered before the court a written statement of the accused, a request for scientific aid form, a drug analysis form, a bulk of the exhibit and remnant of the narcotics.

    The court admitted the exhibits in evidence.

    Aernan urged the court to convict and sentence the accused on the basis of the evidence adduced by prosecution.

  • Unidentified youth dies moments after taking Indian hemp, tramadol

    An unidentified youth in  Oko Oba, Agege,Lagos,died penultimate Tuesday shortly after taking Indian hemp and tramadol.

    Witnesses said the incident happened at the Abattoir end of Oko Oba.

    It was learnt that the deceased smoked Indian hemp with some of his friends, following which he also took tramadol.

    A source who asked not to be named disclosed that ‘’the deceased then sat down at a corner where he took tramadol.’’

    He was said to have palpitated severally after taking the combined hard drugs leading to his death moments later.

    The source added: ‘’ When he started behaving funny, we thought he was just acting clownishly until he palpitated for some minutes and subsequently became weak.

    ‘’ He later started foaming in his mouth and by the time bystanders rushed to attend to him he had died.’’

    The Nation learnt that his body was evacuated by men of the Abattoir Police Division.

  • Man gets three months for possessing Indian hemp

    A Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti yesterday sentenced a 35-year-old man, Isa Yusuf, to three months’ imprisonment for possessing illicit drugs.

    The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) counsel, Mr. Charles Nwagua, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on March 10 at Dadinkowa village, on ABUAD Road, Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that the defendant, on the day, without lawful authority, possessed 500 grammes  of cannabis sativa, a narcotic drug similar to cocaine, heroin and LSD.

    Nwagua said the offence contravened Section 19 of the NDLEA Act. Cap N30, Laws of Federation of Nigeria. 2004.

    Delivering judgment, Justice Uche Agomoh said: “You are hereby sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour.”

    She said the judgment would act as a deterrent to others.

  • Suspects: Indian hemp trafficking better than stealing

    Two suspected drug traffickers arrested by the Niger State Command of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have said dealing in Indian hemp is better than stealing.

    The suspects, 27-year-old Muyideen Jimoh, from Ogbomosho in Oyo State,and 31-year-old Moses Oduaran, from Ughelli in Delta State, were arrested for allegedly trafficking 1,459 kg of substance suspected to be Cannabis Sativa (Indian hemp).

    They were nabbed in Kontagora Local Government while about to sell the hemp, to repair their vehicle.

    Oduaran, suspected to be the leader, said he did not regret his action.

    He added that he regarded selling Indian hemp as a genuine business, since he had never been arrested by the police.

    “This is better than stealing. I know how to go about this business. I regard it as a profession.

    ‘’We met our Waterloo in Niger State. I have been into selling of weeds for years without harassment. Honestly, I regard it as a genuine business until NDLEA officials apprehended us.”

    Oduaran said they used fowl dung to conceal Indian hemp before taking it to the place where it would be sold.

    Jimoh said he acted as a middleman between Oduaran and his customers in Rafi Local Government.

    “Once Oduaran brings Indian hemp from Ondo State to Niger, it is my responsibility to distribute it and collect money on his behalf. I have been doing this for years and I make more money from it than my tailoring job.”

    Addressing reporters, NDLEA Commandant Sylvia Egwunwoke said the matter was being investigated.

     

  • Police intercept bus with 500 parcels of Indian hemp

    Benue State Police Command has paraded three suspects arrested with 500 parcels of Indian hemp.

    Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni said the items were packed in a specially-built J5 bus coming from Ondo State and heading for Borno State.

    He said the bus was divided into two, with Indian hemp packed in one half and other goods occupying the open section.

    Owoseni said policemen on a stop-and-search on Enugu-Makurdi Highway, near Aliade, intercepted the bus and arrested the driver and two others.

    He said more suspects would be nabbed.

     

  • Man arraigned for possessing Indian hemp

    A 25-year-old man, Muhammed Usman, was, yesterday, arraigned at an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ekiti State for alleged possession of Indian hemp.

    He was, however, granted bail at N100,000.

    Chief Magistrate Aderopo Adegboye ordered the suspect to provide one surety.

    He said the surety must be employed and his address verified.

    Usman, whose address was not provided, is facing a one-count charge of unlawful possession of Indian hemp.

    He pleaded not guilty.

    Police prosecutor Bamikole Olasunkanmi told the court that the accused committed the offence on March 14, about 12:30 pm, in Atikankan, Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that the accused  had in his possession one wrap of Indian hemp.

    Olasunkanmi said the offence contravened Section 5 (1) (b) of the Indian Hemp Act Cap 16, Law of the Federation of Nigeria 2014.

    The court adjourned the case till May 5 for mention.

    Man jailed 18 months for drug trafficking

    A Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday  sentenced a 28-year-old man, Oluwaseun Olamilekan, to 18 months imprisonment, for allegedly trafficking in cannabis sativa (Indian-hemp).

    In his judgment at the resumed hearing, Justice Ayokunle Faji, said the imprisonment would begin from the date of his arrest.

    He ordered that the drug exhibits to be returned to the NDLEA for destruction.

    The convict had begged for leniency and promised to turn a new leaf.

    Olamilekan was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on a one count charge of trafficking in narcotic substance.

    He had earlier been arraigned before the court on Sept. 8, 2017 when he pleaded guilty.

    The Prosecutor, Mr Jeremiah Aernan, had told the court that the convict was arrested on Aug. 10, 2017 at Kasimu Street in Agege, Lagos, with 3.1kilogrames of narcotics.

    Aernan tendered some documents in evidence as well as some remnant of the narcotic substance.

    He said the offence contravened Section 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap 30, Laws of the Federation, 2004.

    Army busts up cannabis dealers operation in Ondo

    Men of the  32 Artillery Brigade in Ondo State yesterday reportedly crushed a ‘notorious’ Indian Hemp ( cannabis ) syndicate inside a forest in Owo, Ondo State.

    The operation followed  a tip off on the activities of the gangsters in a hideout in the remote forest in the community.

    It was learnt that during the operation, there was  exchange of fire between the troops and the suspects who later fled due to superior fire power of the soldiers against them.

    The drug dealers were said to have been operating in the farm with impunity.

    The troops reportedly recovered 63 bags of Indian Hemp, 23 expended cartridges and nine unexpended cartridges.

    Criminal activities of the syndicate are rampant especially in Owo, Ogbese and Ose axis of the Sunshine state.

    Late last year,officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agencies ( NDLEA ) across the six geo-political zone were in Ala forest near Ogbese, Akure North local government overnight where they destroyed several acres of ‘cannabis’ plantation.

    The Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Owena Barracks, Akure, Major Ojo Adelegan urged the public to always avail the security agencies useful information on criminal acts in the State.

    He also warned  criminals to stay away from the state, stressing that there is no room for any illegality and undesirable elements in the State.

  • Court remands man caught with Indian hemp

    A Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State capital, has remanded a 36-year-old man, Ojo Matthew, in prison custody, for alleged possession of Indian hemp.

    Counsel to the National Drug Laws Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Mr. Charles Nwagua said the defendant committed the offence on October 8, at Ojumose Street, Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that the defendant was found in possession of 1.6kg of Cannabis Sativa, a narcotic drug similar to Cocaine, Heroin and LSD.

    Nwagua said the offence contravened Section 19 of the NDLEA Act. Cap N30 Laws of Federation of Nigeria 2004.

    The defendant pleaded guilty. His counsel, Mr. Emmanuel Nwokie, prayed the court for a liberal ruling, “since he didn’t waste the time of the court.”

    Justice Taiwo Taiwo ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison custody.

    He adjourned till December 8 for judgment.

    Court remands three persons over possession of cannabis sativa

    An Osun Magistrates’ Court in Ile-Ife on Wednesday remanded Maria Oladunjoye, Taoreed Olajiire and Blessing Ebuka in prison over alleged possession of  cannabis sativa popularly known as Indian hemp.

    Oladunjoye, 48, Olajide, 38 and Ebuka, 20, are facing two-count charge of conspiracy and unlawful possession of Indian hemp, to which they pleaded not guilty.

    The Magistrate, Olalekan Ijiyode, ordered that the defendants be remanded at Ilesa prison, pending hearing on their bail application.

    He asked the Defence Counsel, Ben Adirieje, to make written application for the bail and adjourned the case until Dec. 18 for mention.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sunday Osanyintuyi, had told the court that the defendants committed the offence on Nov. 23 at Seventh Day Adventist Hospital Area in Ile-Ife.

    Osanyintuyi said the three conspired to commit felony and unlawfully had lndian hemp with them.

    He added that the defendants were caught with a bus-full of the substance suspected to be Indian hemp, which was unlawfully obtained.

    According to him, the offence contravenes sections 430 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.
