    Police confiscates N4.6m worth of  Indian-hemp in Jigawa

    Police in Jigawa state on Monday arrested two persons and confiscated substance suspected to be Indian-hemp valued at over N4.6 million.

    This was disclosed by the state’s police commissioner, Mr Rasheed O Akintunde while parading the suspects to news men in Dutse Monday.

    The suspects are Sunday Lawrence, 26 and Shu’aibu Abdullahi, 27.

    Mr Rasheed O Akintunde explained that “On 31st of last month (March) at about 12:15am, a police patrol team at Malam Madori local government area of the state intercepted a vehicle with registration XB 572 AKK along Malam Madori – Yobe highway”.

    According him Sunday Lawrence is an indigen of Kaduna state residing in Kwanar Ganduje in Kano and Shu’aibu Abdullahi of Gashuwa, Yabe state.

    The police boss added that the suspected Indian-hemp was rapped and celled like a books, “Surprisingly, 462 kilograms of a substances recovered in the vehicle. The case will be transferred to National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation”.

    Paraded alongside with suspected drugs traffickers include two suspected kidnappers who robbed one Alhaji Umaru Adamu of Kawada Fulani settlement his motorcycle, handset and kidnapped his wife Hauwa Alhaji Umaru.

    He added that “Alhaji Umaru Adamu reported to the case at Gwaram police station, the police swung in to action and arrested two person rescued the captive and recovered the stolen items.

    Akintude maintained that “Jigawa is relatively peaceful, the nature of cases recorded in March as the command is proactive in tackling any perceived security problem.

    Man charged with unlawful possession of Indian hemp

    A 23-year-old man, Aigboboh Obiho, was arraigned yesterday in Lagos for allegedly being in possession of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp.
    Obiho, who is unemployed, appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
    Obiho resides in Iyana-Ipaja area of Lagos
    According to the Prosecuting Inspector, Clement Okuoimose, the accused committed the offence on January 14 along Oba-Akran Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos.
    Okuoimose said the accused was having with him weeds suspected to be Indian hemp when he was arrested by policemen on patrol.
    “The police, while on patrol at 1am stopped the accused and he was interrogated, but he could not give satisfactory explanations to what he was doing at that time of the night.
    “He was searched and 12 wraps of Indian hemp were recovered. He confessed to the police that he was a distributor of hemp and that he was there to distribute hemp to one of his customers. He said he was selling the hard drug to sustain himself,” the prosecutor said.
    The offence contravened sections 327 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
    The accused may be jailed for six months if found guilty according to the provisions of Section 327.
    The accused pleaded innocence and was granted N10, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.
    Magistrate O.Y Ekogbule adjourned the case to February 13.

    LASU suspends student over Indian hemp

    The Lagos State University (LASU) has suspended a second year Computer Science undergraduate for being in possession of a substance suspected to be Cannabis Sativa (Indian hemp).

    The suspension is contained in the university’s bulletin made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Lagos.

    According to the bulletin, the Vice-Chancellor (VC), Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, suspended the student in line with the powers conferred on him under Section 28 of the law establishing the institution.

    The suspension will subsist until he appears before the Students’ Disciplinary Committee (SDC) to defend himself.

    The institution’s security men apprehended the student last May 3, with the suspected substance. The possession of such hard drugs contravenes the university’s rules.

    “In view of this development, the student is not expected to participate in the academic activities of the university until the suspension is lifted.’

    The Oyo/Osun Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted   226 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa, popularly known as Indian hemp, concealed in fairly used imported clothes at the Oyo axis of the border between Nigeria and Benin Republic.

    The suspected smugglers abandoned the goods and escaped through the forest.

    Addressing reporters at the Bodija Ibadan Customs Area Command Headquarters yesterday, the Area Controller, Temitope Ogunkua, said the drugs were intercepted through intelligence gathering.

    According to him, the street value of the hemp is over N2.2million.

    Also recovered were a fairly used cabstar (white) with chassis no 115666.

    This vehicle was found to be loaded with 27 bales of fairly used clothes, one bale of Cannabis Sativa and seven rolls of linen materials.

    Others were a fairly used Mitsubishi Space wagon with chassis no JMBLNN43WS200132 and was loaded with six bales of used clothes, six rolls of linen materials, four bales of Indian hemp.

    The Cannabis Sativa was later handed over to the state Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) , Mrs. Omolade Faboyede

    Oyo/Osun Customs seizes 226kg of Indian hemp

    The Oyo/Osun Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted   226 kilograms   of cannabis Sativa popularly known as Indian Hemp concealed in fairly used imported clothes
    along Oyo axis of the border between Nigeria and Benin Republic.

    The suspected smugglers were said to have abandoned the vehicles with the goods and escaped through the thick forest .

    Addressing newsmen at the Bodija Ibadan Customs Area Command Headquarters yesterday, the Area Controller , Mr Temitope Ogunkua said the drugs were intercepted through intelligence gathering.

    According to him, the street value of the Indian Hemp is over N2.2million.
    Ogunkua stated that the command will continue to reiterate its stand of zero tolerance for revenue leakage and reduction of smuggling to the barest minimum .

    Present at the event were the
    NDLEA state Commander Mrs Omolade Faboyede, senior officers of the two collaborating security agencies and other security agencies .

    The customs boss further disclosed that all those behind the smuggling will be trapped .

    He said “We will continue to collaborate with NDLEA for us to fight against smuggling and hard drugs
    and see how we will get to the root of this . We are still investigating because we have some leads and we will look at the leads and we hope we will get the perpetrators in good time . The important thing is that we know we have some useful informations about them.”

    Kaduna: Police intercept 33 bags of Indian hemp 

    Kaduna State Police Command Monday intercepted 33 bags of Indian hemp and 34 baskets of hard drugs in Kaduna metropolis.

    This was also as National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Kaduna State office, arrested one Mr. Emeka Mbonu in Kaduna for production and sale of unregistered drug product.

    The fake pharmacist was arrested while trying to purchase pharma bottles used by pharmaceutical companies and realizing that he was not a pharmacist or owns a pharmaceutical outlet; NAFDAC was alerted by his would be seller.

    Briefing Journalists, the State Coordinator of NAFDAC, Mr. Kenneth Azikiwe urged the general public to partner with the Agency in the reduction of unwholesome products from the state.

    Azikiwe said, they can do this by alerting the Agency of counterfeiter in their domain so that the health of the populace can be safeguarded.

    He added that on further interrogation, it was discovered that Mr. Mbonu has been on the run from the Agency, Kaduna State for the past six months on suspicion of the production and sale of unregistered Mist Potassium Citrate B.P.C in Kaduna Central Market where he used to have a shop.

    He said it was also discovered that the suspect  was still involved in the illegal manufacturing which led the NAFDAC officers to his residence in Mararaba Rido; outskirt of the state.

    “At his residence, he was found to be using one of his rooms for production and producing under unhygienic conditions. He informed the officers that he only produces on order and distributes to the rural areas because he was being haunted in the city by NAFDAC and people were not patronizing him.

    “The Mist Potassium Citrate B.P.C found in his residence had fake NAFDAC registration number, manufacturing and expiry dates including batch number. The manufacturing address reads Renge Production (Nig.) Ltd. 107 Ibrahim Shakaru Street, Tudun Wada, Kano State which is fake.

    “Mist Potassium Citrate B.P.C is used in the treatment of urinary tract infection and with the use antibiotics change the alkaline/acidity of the urine”. NAFDAC Officer said.

    He said that the culprit will be prosecuted in the law court to deter others from engaging in such activity.

    In a related development, Kaduna State Police Command intercepted 33 bags of Indian hemp and 34 baskets of hard drugs in Kaduna metropolis.

    The Commissioner of Police, Umar Shehu who displayed the drugs said the Police arrested over 150 suspects who are presently being prosecuted in courts.

    The Police Commissioner added that, the Police also recovered 10 bags of Indian hemp in ‘Bacco Bags’, 10 cartoons of hard drugs and 17 jerrycans of liquid toxicant acid.

    The Commissioner of Police thanked Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai for steering the campaign against illicit drugs in the State.

    “As you can see we recorded this achievement in Kaduna town where we intercepted these drugs. We will continue to do our best in containing this menace in view of the negative consequences of drugs in the society.

    “Hard drugs are a strong motivation to crime, rape and other vices and we will continue to do our best without a break.

    “As you know, the government of Kaduna state under the leadership of Governor El-Rufai has been supportive and we are grateful.”

    He said that the Command will hand over the intercepted drugs to National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

     

  • Woman jailed for 24 months for selling hemp

    A Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday sentenced a 35-year old woman, Iyabo Olabimpe, to 24 months imprisonment over drug trafficking.

    The convict was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on a one-count charge bordering on the offense.

    She pleaded guilty to the charge.

    Following her plea, the prosecutor, Mr. Jeremiah Aernan, tendered the statement of the accused, a request for scientific aid form and the bulk of exhibit as evidence before the court.

    He urged the court to sentence the accused based on the evidence adduced by prosecution.

    Delivering the judgment, Justice Rabiu Shagari found the accused guilty as charged.

    She sentenced her to 24 months imprisonment, which she said would start running from the date of her arrest.

    The judge also ordered the exhibit to be destroyed by the NDLEA.

    The prosecutor had told the court that the convict was arrested on Sept. 11, 2015 at Soj St., in Ayiata near Ikorodu, Lagos.

    He said that she was found in possession of 700g of Cannabis Sativa a.k.a. Indian hemp, which she sold to people.

    Aernan said the offense contravened the provisions of sections 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30 Laws of the Federation 2004.

    907.4kg Indian hemp seized in 2015

    NATIONAL Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA),   Seme Command in Lagos State, yesterday, said it seized 907.4 kg of hemp in 2015.

    The Commander, Mr Udotong Essien, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Badagry that 31 suspects were arrested during the same period.

    He said 22 of the suspects had been convicted by the courts.

    “From January to December 2015, about 907.45 kg of cannabis sativa, popularly known as hemp, was seized and 31 suspects were arrested during the period under review.

    “Among the suspects is a Ghanaian woman, who was caught with 35.5 kg of hemp while she was trying to come into the country through the border,’’ he said.

    According to Essien, N3.8 million, 2.3 million CFA and 50,391 dollars were seized from the suspects.

    He said: “The seizures were made as a result of non-declaration of the money or their inability to explain the source of the money.

    “Drug war is a collective responsibility that requires the cooperation of citizens, especially those in the border areas as Seme.’’

    Essien said NDLEA officers had been trained locally and abroad as part of efforts to further equip them.

    He, however, said his men needed gadgets and vehicles for better performance.

    The commander advised parents, whose children and wards attend schools in Benin Republic to monitor their activities.

    “Recently, a student in one of the popular universities in Benin Republic was arrested with large quantities of hemp.’’

    Vulcaniser held for ‘robbery and Indian hemp smoking’

    A vulcaniser has been arrested by Rapid Response Squad (RRS) operatives for alleged robbery and Indian hemp smoking.

    The suspect was caught on Saturday, when he and his accomplice, who is at large, robbed a tricyclist popularly known as “Marwa”.

    He confessed to the robbery.

    The suspect said his friend used a knife to disposses the tricyclist, Okeke Chibuike, of his two mobile phones, money and other valuables.

    According to him, his friend dropped the stolen items when he spotted RRS operatives and ran away.

    The secondary school drop-out turned vulcaniser explained that he followed his friend to Iddo.

    “I was standing trying to take a tricycle to Oyingbo when I heard the shout of thief, thief. I saw my friend dropping handsets and a jack knife, I picked them up. That was how RRS operatives arrested me.” he said.

    “I have been learning vulcanising for over six years, and I am preparing for my freedom. It was my friend that robbed. He dropped the phone and the jack knife when he was being chased. I only picked them up to defend myself.

    “Abdullah is a street sweeper in Oyingbo. I know where he lives. He is the one that put me into this problem. I only followed him to Iddo”, he added.

    Also on Saturday, another vulcaniser Sola Adetona arrested behind Bobby Benson House in Onipanu, Lagos.

    Adetona, 28, said: “I was in a joint when I was arrested. I smoke weed to stimulate myself and to make myself work better.

    “I live in Mushin and I was arrested around 5pm. I want to plead for mercy. I am not married but I have impregnated a woman”.

    NDLEA impounds truck with N15m Indian hemp

    The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency  (NDLEA) on Friday said it impounded a truck loaded with Indian hemp worth over N15 million in Akwanga, Nasarawa State.

    Mr Saidu Salihu, the NDLEA Area Commander in charge of Akwanga and Kokona Local Government Areas, disclosed this to newsmen in Akwanga.

    Salihu said that the truck was impounded after knocking down and killing three street hawkers at Alushi Village, near Akwanga.

    According to him, the occupants of the vehicle fled the scene after the accident.

    “The villagers later got there and discovered that the truck was loaded with hard drugs and contacted the agency.

    “The occupants of the vehicle left their mobile phones and other valuables in the truck and that is what we are using to track them down,’’ Salihu said.

    He said that the impounded vehicle had been deposited at the Akwanga Police Station while investigation was on going to arrest and prosecute the suspected traffickers.

    The commander vowed that the agency was poised to rid the state of drug traffickers and peddlers.

    He, however, solicited the support of members of the public in order for the agency to achieve its goal.
