Corruption: Nigerians need ethical reorientation – Sen. Sani

Sen. Shehu Sani (APC-Kaduna Central), on Friday advocated for the introduction of ethical reorientation campaign, to psyche Nigerians on the need to shun corruption.

Sani made the remark at the opening of the 10th National Conference organised by School of General Education, Federal College of Education (FCE), Zaria, Kaduna State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the conference had as its theme: “Education, Corruption, Resource Utilisation and Issues of Security Challenges in Contemporary Nigeria.”

Sani said: “There is need for ethical revolution in this country. Fighting corruption doesn’t only end in arresting and prosecuting people but changing the mindset of Nigerians.

“There is so much expectations from a public servant or a politician from his immediate family, his community and the society in general.

“We must change this materialistic tendencies of our society, we need a society that is based and founded on mutual respect, patriotism and unity of this country.”

He stressed the need for value re-orientation within the civil service to holistically tackle the menace of corruption.

“What I am saying is that if we don’t move fast, educating our people, developing our country, we will risk a revolution.”

Sani, who described the civil service as “the fountain of corruption”, said current anti-corruption crusade must target civil servants.

The Senator advised the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to sheath their sword, insisting that Nigeria would never break-up.

“Young people should be inspired by people who succeed and they should learn from those that failed.

“In every point about situation, there is something to take home as a lesson,” he said.

Sani said Nigeria would remain an indivisible nation and leader in Africa.

“Much is expected of Nigeria, you cannot afford to break this country at this very time,” h said.

In his speech, the Provost of the college, Dr Ango Ladan said Nigeria’s greatness lies in its ability to fashion out a robust education system.

He said teachers ought to get the highest pay in the country in order to attract the best brains and ensure that products of the education system serve the country well.

Ladan stressed that Nigeria’s desire for change would only manifest if citizens commit themselves to investing in national growth and development.

The provost lauded the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari for addressing security challenges bedevilling the nation.

Earlier, the Dean, School of Education, Dr Ibrahim Tanimu said the conference was organised to proffer solutions to the corruption menace in Nigeria.

He said that part of the responsibility of a good education system was to help mould patriotic citizens, who would shun any attempt to defraud the nation.

    Biafra@50: Activities paralysed in Southeast

Social and economic activities were paralysed in parts of the Southeast as the people obeyed a call by two pro-Biafra groups for a public holiday to commemorate the declaration of the defunct republic.

Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Movement for Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) had declared May 30 a public holiday for their supporters to commemorate 50 years of the declaration of Biafra.

They also said they wanted to remember those who died in the Nigerian civil war fought between Nigerian troops and rebel Biafra forces.

Correspondents of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that markets, schools, government and private offices were shut in obedience to the call.

Meanwhile, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, the leader of MASSOB and Biafra Independence Movement (BIM) said the two groups under him were not part of the call for sit-at-home.

In Umuahia, workers in federal establishments and those of the Abia Government stayed away from their offices.

Abia State Secretariat Complex, public and private schools, markets and major supermarkets in the city were shut and transporters stayed off the roads.

Umuahia city centre, known as Isi-gate, was empty and quiet, while the shops in the area and the adjoining streets were all closed.

Many residents remained indoors, while children used the opportunity to play football on some streets.

On the streets,  detachments of police and other security agents patrolled, while a police helicopter  hovered in the sky to monitor events.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Abia, Mr Geoffrey Ogbonna, told NAN by telephone that there was no threat to public peace.

He said that security operatives were adequately deployed in all parts of the state to checkmate any possible breach of the peace.

Ogbonna said that the Commissioner of Police, Mr Leye Oyebade, was leading a combined team of all  -security agencies to maintain the peace.

“The commissioner has been leading the heads of other security agencies in the state to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order.

“Abia is calm and people are going about their lawful businesses without any fear of molestation,” Ogbonna said.

In Owerri, two major markets, Eke Onuwa and Relief Markets, remained closed, likewise shops on some major streets, Wetheral Road and Mbaise Road.

The busy Douglas Road, which usually bustles with heavy traffic, was free as traders stayed home.

Banks, eateries and boutiques also closed business activities.

A bank worker, who pleaded  anonymity, said the workers were awaiting further directives from their headquarters before they could open for business.

There were few commercial vehicles on the road, while Imo Transport Company shut operations.

Some passengers who arrived at motor-parks early to leave the city were stranded.

Mrs Oluchi Uchenwa said she arrive in Owerri at 7a.m. to travel to Port Harcourt but could not get a vehicle.

Students also failed to turn up in school in spite of their teachers coming to work.

The situation also affected activities at the courts with   some sitting and others not working.

A lawyer who did not want to be named, called on the Federal Government to look into the agitation of the pro-Biafra groups and others.

“This kind of situation does not tell good for the corporate image and identity of Nigeria that we are in one country, yet everyday it is Biafra agitation, the other day it is Boko Haram and OPC,’’ the lawyer said.

Uwazuruike  said: “The position of MASSOB and BIM under my watch is that we are not part of any sit-at-home order, all what I am aware is the week-long celebration to mark 18th  anniversary of MASSOB and 50th anniversary of Biafra.

“Anybody talking about sit-at-home is on his own and I have nothing to tell anybody on such activity neither should any problem associated to it be attributed to me,’’ he said.

IPOB stay at home order: Schools remain closed

The stay at home directive given by both Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) could be said to be a partial success in Umuahia and its environs.
The Nation in Umuahia after going round the city saw most of the schools closed as the classrooms were under lock and key while the premises were totally empty as there were no pupils in the school.
One of the teachers who spoke with our reporter on condition of anonymity said that she came to school to meet the school devoid of any pupil and that she was just hanging around to see if any of her colleagues will come around.
When asked the reason behind the school being empty she said, “I am sure it is because of the directive by IPOB that people should stay at home in remembrance of the heroes and heroines who lost their lives during the civil war”.
“I support the directive as those who were killed during the war and others without arms who were killed by some security operatives in different cities across the South East zone while demonstrating for Biafra should be remembered”.
“We need to remember them as most of them were bread winners of their different homes and families, those they left behind should be allowed to stay at home today to mourn them and also remember them in their prayers”.
However the banks in the state capital were close for business as people and customers were seen trooping in and out from the banks looking dejected while the ATM in most of the banks were crowded.
At one of the banks gate was open while the entrance into the banking hall was closed when asked one of the security men at the bank compound said that they have to close the bank to avoid any unforeseen problems.
He said that if the bank is closed for one day that it will not make them loose any thing, “But if we open and there is a problem we would have lost a lot so it is better we remain closed for today and save cost”.
Meanwhile security was beefed up in the state capital as policemen, Civil Defence and other arms of security agencies were seen at every corner while the police helicopter was seen hovering round the city and Aba.

Police confirm arrest of IPOB, MASSOB members

The Police in Ebonyi on Saturday confirmed the arrest of some members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in various part of the state for alleged unlawful sensitization programme.

The command’s spokesman, DSP Jude Madu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday that the arrested suspects also included members of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB).

Madu said that the suspects were arrested for unlawfully sensitizing the public to stay at home on May 30, in observance of the group anniversary.

“They would be charged to court and the command would ensure that they are duly prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.

“IPOB and MASSOB are illegal groups and did not get permission from the police to embark on such exercise which threatens the peace and security of the state.

“The command with the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Titus Lamorde, has commenced intensive sensitization of the populace to disregard the sit-at-home directive and go about their lawful businesses,” he said.

Madu warned members of the group not to carry out outlawed activities within the state before, during and after May 30, as the full weight of the law would be brought on any defaulter.

“Any person or group found culpable would be arrested and duly prosecuted as the groups’ activities amount to mutiny or fighting a sitting and legally recognized government.

“IPOB and MASSOB are techniques developed by some individuals to gain public interest and recognition as the former is even a breakaway organ of the latter.

“These groups have not provided amenities or other forms of social security for the people they are directing to stay at home; it shows that their intentions are not sincere and must be rejected by all,” he said.

He advised the groups that not everybody was interested in issues concerning secession as people still remember the horrors of the civil war and other upheavals in the country after then.

According to him, they should realize that most people are not interested in their preaching, therefore, they should not force anybody to be involved in their illegal and unlawful practices.

Madu called on traditional rulers and town unions across the state to assist the police in sensitizing the people and provide relevant information about the group’s activities.

“The command has distributed various call contacts (numbers) to the public to report activities of these groups within this period, especially molestation, if they refuse heeding to the stay-at home order.

“Any gathering of two or more people propagating the IPOB/MASSOB messages or executing related activities should be promptly reported to the police for immediate actions,” he said.

A NAN Correspondent who visited the state police command reports that the arrested IPOB members were upbeat and chanting solidarity songs.

  • Biafra Protest: IGP orders AIG, CPs to put personnel, equipment on red alert

Biafra Protest: IGP orders AIG, CPs to put personnel, equipment on red alert

    …Warns group to rethink

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris has ordered that Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs) and Commissioners of Police (CPs) in South Eastern states of the country put personnel and equipment on red alert ahead of planned protest by some Biafran groups.

The Police also warned the groups; the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and the Biafra Independence Movement (BIM) and other like groups not to embark on its planned protest.

The group which plans on embarking on a protest on the 30th of May has also ordered market closure and restrictions of vehicular movements.

The Police said it sees the activities of the groups as unlawful, highly provocative and capable of causing breach of the peace currently being enjoyed in the South East States and other States of the Federation.

This is contained in a statement in Abuja Friday by the Force Spokesman, CSP Jimoh Moshood.

The statement reads: “The Nigeria Police Force is deeply concerned with the security implications with regards to the renewed hostilities and subversive propagandas aimed at undermining law and order in some States of the Federation by these groups, their associates, sponsors, apologists and sympathizers.

“Consequently, the Commissioners of Police in the affected States and their supervising Assistant Inspectors General of Police, have been directed by the Inspector General of Police to be strict, polite, civil and firm in dealing with the situation and put all the Police Personnel and Police Anti-Riot equipment on red alert to deal decisively in accordance with the law with any eventuality from these groups, that can disrupt commercial activities, vehicular movements and safety of lives and properties in some States of the Federation considered to be flash points which have witnessed the unfortunate disturbance of public peace by these groups in the recent past.”

“The Force sees the activities of these groups as not only unlawful but highly provocative and capable of causing breach of the peace currently being enjoyed in the South East States and other States of the Federation.

“The planned protests and orders of Market closure and illegal unilateral self-imposed restrictions of vehicular movements by these groups in the affected States should be disregarded by all well-meaning Nigerians.”

The statement further reads: “The Police Force is hereby calling (IPOB), (BIM), (MASSOB) to consider the consequences of their actions and activities and without delay and call themselves to order in the interest of National Security, and safety of lives and properties of every Nigerian across the Nation as the full weight of the law will be made to bear on violators of the laws.

“The Force will not hesitate to deal decisively with any group(s) and their sponsors that attempt to cause disturbance of the peace or carry out any unlawful demonstration, unlawful assembly/procession or gathering and public disobedience that can jeopardise law and order and harmonious co-existence within and amongst Nigerians throughout the country.”

The police while quoting the constitution noted that it was aware of the provision as contained in Sections 38, 39,40 and 41 of the 1999 amended constitution.

“The Nigeria Police Force is not unaware of the rights of every Nigerian to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association and freedom of movement, as essentials of democracy provided by the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended particularly sections 38, 39, 40 and 41.

“However, these rights must be observed with decorum, in good faith and without violating the rights of other millions of Nigerians to free movements and access to public/private facilities and their means of livelihood on daily basis.

“The Nigeria Police while observing the rights of all Nigerians as stated above is equally conscious of the fact that these rights are not absolute as section 45 of the same Constitution provide for derogations to these rights.

“The fact that freedom of expression as one of the dictates of democracy is being observed by the Police, should not be misconstrued as liberty by any groups for sectional or group interest to violate the laws and cause mayhem, confusion and apprehension in the minds of more than about one hundred and seventy millions of Nigerians.

“The Police will resist actions of any person or group of persons for whatever course that is against the interest of public defence, public safety, public order, public morality and a threat to the rights and freedom of other Nigerians,” it emphasised.”

The Police advised the members of the public to go about their lawful duties and other responsibilities without any fear or apprehension as adequate security arrangements have been put in place for their safety.

  • Police warn IPOB/MASSOB, others on protest, use of siren in Abia

Police warn IPOB/MASSOB, others on protest, use of siren in Abia

The Abia State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has warned members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and other pro-Biafra groups planning to embark on any form of protest to rescind from such action.

The Public Relations Officer of the Command (PPRO), Geoffrey Ogbonna in a telephone interview with our reporter on Wednesday also debunked speculations making rounds that they (police) arrested and detained members of the people of MASSOB and BIM (Biafra Independent Movement)

According to Ogbonna, “The information at our disposal was that one of our sister agencies arrested some members of MASSOB and other pro-Biafra group on the day of their protest which I would not want to comment about. But as we speak, I am yet to receive information from any division that they arrested members of MASSOB and that is the much I can tell you.”

The PPRO who said that the police was doing everything within its powers to ensure that residents of Aba and the state go about their businesses without fear of intimidation from any quarters stated that the command would not fold its arms to watch anyone hide under any guise to foment trouble or cause breach of peace in the state.

He said that the warning was part of the police proactive steps in ensuring that Abia remains calm and conducive for business activities to thrive in any part of the state.

“It is naturally expected that nobody should take laws into his/her own hands as to coarse other law abiding citizens into a demonstration under any guise. Specifically, IPOB, MASSOB and other associations thinking along that line are better warned because doing otherwise shall be met with the full weight of the law.”

The Police spokesman also disclosed that the command has similarly imposed ban on the use of siren in the state especially by unauthorized persons in the state.

Ogbonna who lamented indiscriminate use of siren in the state by individuals said that the command has directed any person(s) not permitted by law to use siren in the state to dismantle them and stressed that anyone caught forthwith by police in any part of the state would be arrested and treated according to the law that prohibited indiscriminate and illegal use of siren in the state.

“For purpose of clarity, those entitled to the use of siren in the State are: The executive Governor (of the State), the Assistant Inspector General of Police, The Commissioner of Police,
The Brigade Commander (14 Brigade Ohafia), The Fire Service and Ambulances when on emergency duties.

“Persons outside the personalities/Institutions mentioned above in the state having siren on their vehicles are advised to dismantle it or be made to face the Law.”

However, an official of MASSOB who spoke anonymously dismissed the warning by the police, stating that no amount of threat on them would cow them from the ongoing agitation for the Sovereign State of Biafra.

The source said that MASSOB is a peaceful and non-violent group who have become sacrificial lambs in the hands of the police and other security agencies and stated that it is their fundamental rights to embark on peaceful protest at any time that they like.

“We have remained resolute and peaceful in our agitation for the sovereign state of Biafra. We heard the announcement and we want to assure the police that they are just issuing a warning or threat that doesn’t hold any water. If we decide to hold protest on May 30 or any other day, they won’t stop us. They can go ahead to kill innocent and unarmed citizens of Biafra, but that would not deter us from the agitation of Biafra. That their warning or threat doesn’t make any sense and can’t kill the fire in us to have a state that has been the dream of our heroes past.”

    Biafra: Kanu disowns American radio

    …Announces reorganisation in IPOB

The leader of the group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu has dissociated himself and members of his association from a certain Radio Biafra based in the United States.

He also said a reorganisation has been effected in the leadership of the group, resulting in, among others, the abolition of the title of Coordinator of all Coordinators (COC).

Kanu urged IPOB members to observe the sit-at-home planned for May 30 this year peacefully. He said the exercise was to remember Biafra heroes, who died during the Civil War and at other times.

In a statement issued yesterday by his lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Kanu said the official voice of IPOB remains the Radio Biafra based in London, registered under the relevant laws in the United Kingdom (UK).

He said a supposed Radio Biafra, said to have been recently launched in the US is not known to him and his members, and did not represent their interests.

    Part of the letter reads:

“Nnamdi Kanu remains the founder, and director of Radio Biafra London and accordingly Deputized by Mazi Uche Mefor. Radio Biafra London is the officially sanctioned channel of communication of IPOB, through which every information concerning the affairs of IPOB are disseminated. “At the same time, all members of IPOB and the general public are hereby  duly informed that the position of C.O.C (Coordinator of all Coordinators) overall, has been abolished following the recent reorganisation carried out by the leadership  of IPOB worldwide.

“Henceforth any person parading himself with the title C.O.C should be regarded and treated as a criminal.

“Following this radical change in the structural setup of IPOB, the world Administrative Headquarters of IPOB is now situated in London and Germany respectively.

“The officers with the mandate of the leadership of IPOB and through whom the supreme leader Nnamdi Kanu speaks remains Radio Biafra London with satellite stations in South Africa, Malaysia, Germany and soon to be opened United State of America.

“The two persons appointed by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu as being responsible for communicating his thoughts and views to IPOB membership and the rest of the world remains Uche Mefor (the Deputy Leader of IPOB) and Mazi Chika Edoziem (the Head of the Directorate of State of the IPOB).

“All authority to issue directives rests with the Deputy Leader, Uche Mefor and Mazi Chika Edoziem. Any press release, announcement or communication purportedly issued by any other person other than the above named principal officers or officers acting on their instruction are to be discountenanced and ignored by the general public.

  • IPOB condemn continuous detention of five members

IPOB condemn continuous detention of five members

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has condemned the continued detention of five of its members and many others being detained at various prisons across the country for no justifiable reason.

The group gave the names of those who are still in detention to include, Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu, David Nwawuisi, Bright Chimezie, George Onyeibe and other members, “Who are being detained in different Nigeria prisons in  Ugwuocha Rivers state, Delta State, Anambra State, Akwa Ibom State, Abia State and Abuja”.

The condemnation was contained in statement signed by the media and publicity secretary of IPOB, Emma Powerful which blamed the judicial commission and Attorney General of the Federation for allowing the courts to continue mess the judicial system in Nigeria.

The statement reads, “The Attorney General of the Federation should have dropped all the concocted and fabricated charges preferred against our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and others who are still detained in prison to save their image in the face of the international community”.

“It is very appalling that a well-trained judge who passed through so many seminars before being elevated to the position of a Chief judge in a Federal High court can allowed herself and the court to be used to barre Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from exercising his fundamental human rights”.

“However, the continued detention of those mentioned above in different prisons and DSS secret cells across the country remained the weakness on the side of judicial commission and Attorney General of Federation”.

“It is very abnormal that the judicial commission and judiciary in Nigeria that are supposed to be the last hope for common man would turned themselves to be problem for the masses they are supposed to protect”.

“With the judgement on 25th April 2017 banning our leader from speaking to the press and not to stay with more than 10 persons proves to the entire world that the judiciary in Nigeria is where truth can never prevail”.

“According to the information reaching us indicates that our members detained in different prisons and secret cells across the country are no more save as most of them have fallen sick because of lack of proper medical attention”.

“Especially those being detained in Kuje prison, we are calling for their immediate released to enable them take proper medical treatment because we cannot take it easy with anybody if anything should happen to any of our members in detention anywhere in the country”.

“We are calling on men and women of good conscience across the globe, Amnesty International and relevant human rights organizations to prevail on the Attorney General of the Federation and the judicial commission to drop the fabricated charges preferred against our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and others detained illegally alongside him in Kuje Prison because they committed no offense against anybody or Nigeria state”.

“IPOB remained a peaceful and nonviolent organization in history of freedom fighting across the globe and  we will continue to follow the lay down rules provided by the United Nations charter for the rights of the indigenous people”.

The Biafra liberation movement is sacrosanct and waxing stronger both home and  in diaspora and will not go back in the quest for the restoration of Biafra, anybody who is thinking to sabotage the struggle is doing that to his or her own detriment”.

“We believe that the conditional and harsh bail attached to our leader with which he was released was to cage him and to dampened the high spirits of IPOB family members worldwide which has failed”.

“The injustice against the people of Biafra in Nigeria are numerous to mentioned, IPOB under the leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu have decided to fight it to a standstill”.

“Of course many are aware that this is a project of God Almighty which IPOB embarked upon to liberate our people from the shackles of bondage we find ourselves in the hands of those who are determined to ruin us with the help of the British Government no matter the price we might pay in the cause of pursuing this freedom, we will not backpedal”.

“We are advising the entire Biafrans both home and abroad to observe the remembrance day celebration of our fallen heroes and heroines who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our people to live today in Nigeria”.

The 30th of May this year sit at home and remembrance day celebration will be a remarkable event in the history of Biafra as we must always remember those who laid down their lives so that we may live”.

“Therefore, there will be no movement of any kind because the international community and friends of Biafra have delegated some foreign observers to monitor the event on that fateful day, the delegates will be in Biafraland with their media team to ascertain if the people of Biafra are ready for the upcoming referendum for Biafra sovereignty”.

Ekwueme receives IPOB leader, assures him fatherly support

Former Vice President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme Wednesday, gave assurance of his fatherly support to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi NnamdiKanu.

Ekwueme, who made the pledge when the IPOB leader visited him at his Enugu residence, assured that he would always give the IPOB leader the needed counsel.

Kanu had told Ekwueme that “I have come to tell you that we find you invaluable in our advancement of our people and in our cause also to make life better for the public and for the masses.

“So, I am humbled and delighted to be here and also to bring you up to speed as to what we have been doing, what motivated me; what motivated the IPOB to do what we have been doing.

“It is more or less today an expression, a political expression to the yearnings and aspirations of the society; that’s what we are trying to do.

“The sum total of the struggle by the IPOB, which I’m leading is to ensure that there is dignity of life.

“And for us to fulfill that very mandate, we must be diligent, we must be focused, we must be sincere.

“So, I have come here to brief my father as to why we‎ do what we do and to get his blessings; anything he tells me is what we are going to do, in so far as it advances our political course as a people.”

Ekwueme said it was a pleasure receiving the IPOB leader after all his travails, stressing: “I thank God that he is free and able to move around.”

“I will make my best counsel available to him in his very onerous task of leading an organization that is committed to bringing justice and equity among people, especially for our people”, he added.
