INEC to conduct fresh poll in Edo constituency

The Edo State Office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said the House of Assembly election for Orhionmwon II, which was inconclusive last Saturday, following violence, will be held on Saturday.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mike Igini, yesterday addressed reporters in Benin, the state capital, on the need for the rescheduled poll.

But he noted that the success recorded by the commission outweighed the challenges encountered during the elections.

Igini, who assured eligible voters in Orhionmwon II that their votes must count in the rescheduled election, added that election would be conducted in the 12 units in the constituency with 4,813 registered voters.

He said: “Orhionmwon II was declared inconclusive because some polling unit results were cancelled or election not held on account of violence. Therefore, we were unable to make a return.

“The affected areas involved are 12 units in four registered areas (RAs). We have 4,813 voters in the affected polling units; it was on account of the fact that the margin of win of the leading candidate was far less to areas where we had 4,813. On or by Saturday, INEC will be going back to Orhionmwon II to conduct the election.”

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar who made the remark at a news conference addressed by leaders and elders of the APC in Yola, said the election of Senator Jibrilla Bindow has put paid to ethnic and religious politics in Adamawa state.

The conference which was meant to thank the people of Adamawa state for voting massively for the APC at all levels of government was attended by the governor-elect, Senator Bindow, the APC three Senators-elect, the members of the House of Representatives elected on the APC platform and the 22 members of the state House of Assembly from the party and all party leaders and elders in the state.

Alhaji Atiku described the momentum and victory of the APC in the state as historic, saying this was the first time in six years that he would be part of the winning team in the state and at the federal level.

The former Vice President regretted that the state has not been so divided on ethnic and religious lines than now, especially because of the insurgent activities and the political campaigns of some politicians that was wrapped around religion and ethnicity.

He however said his heart was gladdened that the people overcame the challenge with their uncommon resolve by voting massively for the APC candidates and in particular the emergence of Senator Bindow as the governor-elect.

The former Vice President urged the governor-elect to put a formidable team together and hit the ground running immediately after his swearing-in, stressing that there is the urgent need to address the myraids of problems facing the people frontally.

He said besides the challenge of resettling Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs and victims of insurgency, the problems of infrastructural deficit in the areas health, education, roads, and water supply for the people should be addressed for the good of the people.

  • Irregularities recorded in Warri, says INEC

Irregularities recorded in Warri, says INEC

The Electoral Officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State, Fidelia Omoile, has said the commission received reports of irregularities during last Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections.

The INEC man said it was investigating the irregularities.

This happened as the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate for Uvwie Constituency, Efe Oforbruku, was leading in the number of votes being counted at the time of filing this report last night.

It was learnt that the election in Warri South was riddled with irregularities, such as diversion of materials, intimidation of electoral officers and illegal change of polling units.

Omoile said the commission would decide on the complaints by some parties.

When our correspondent spoke with Omoile at the INEC office in Warri a little past 3pm, at the collation centre for the votes in the council area, she said the collation was still going on, adding that results would be ready yesterday.

Omoile said: “I will say the exercise was okay, but not to say that we didn’t have challenges. We had reported cases of violence in some wards, diversion of materials, of units and such things. These …are being handled in this office. We have reports from our presiding officers and Special Polling Officers (SPOs) in such areas where such problems occurred. The complaints are being handled.

“The collation is still going on. We are progressing; there’s no problem. In areas where agents dispute a particular result – either it’s not corresponding to what they have – we’ll put heads together with the Returning Officer and take a decision, either to cancel or not.

“In areas where materials were snatched, taken away or where officers were cajoled to follow them to places that are not the actual polling units, it’s all harassment; when you force ad-hoc workers to move away from where they need to be is harassment.”

Also, the collation of results at the Uvwie Local Government Area’s collation centre, as at the time of filing this report, put SDP’s candidate, Efe Oforbruku, an incumbent, ahead as the likely winner.

INEC probes 66 violent incidents in 19 states

THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)  is probing 66 violent incidents in 19 states during Saturday’s governorship and Houses of Assembly elections.

It vowed to bring the culprits to justice after the conclusion of its investigation.

The commission, in a statement in Abuja, asked those aggrieved over the results of the elections to seek redress in tribunals instead of taking the laws into their hands.

It, however, claimed that the elections were generally peaceful with 88.9 per cent of polling units opened for accreditation between 8am and 10am.

The statement said: “Overall, many parts of the country remained relatively peaceful during the elections. Some states, however, recorded a significant number of violent incidents, the most affected being Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ebonyi and Ondo states.

“INEC’s records show that there were 66 reports of violent incidents targeted at polling units, the commission’s officials, voters and election materials.

“These were in Rivers State (16 incidents), Ondo (eight), Cross River and Ebonyi (six each), Akwa Ibom (five) Bayelsa (four), Lagos and Kaduna (three each), Jigawa, Enugu, Ekiti and Osun (two each), Katsina, Plateau, Kogi, Abia, Imo, Kano and Ogun (one each).

“The Commission is investigating these incidents and will do everything within its powers to bring culprits to justice.”

INEC advised those aggrieved about the outcome of the elections to go to tribunals in line with the Electoral Act.

The statement added: “INEC commends Nigerians for once again demonstrating their resolve and commitment to participate in the electoral process and by doing so, contributing to deepening democracy in our country.

“The commission calls on every citizen to maintain the peace as the results of the governorship and State Assembly elections are being processed, and to accept the official outcomes.

“It would like to emphasise that winners can only emerge after collation of the official results and on the basis of the requirements prescribed by the legal framework. Any aggrieved persons or groups are encouraged to seek redress at the tribunals.

“INEC would also like to remind all stakeholders that the process is not yet completed and urges restraint in their comments, as we strive to bring this process to an orderly, peaceful and credible conclusion.”

Notwithstanding, the commission said a general assessment indicated that the elections were smoother and largely peaceful.

Guber Poll: Observers call for cancellation of Rivers result

International election observers on Sunday called for the cancellation of the Governorship and House of Assembly elections in Rivers.

The leader of African Centre for Leadership Strategies and Development, Mr Humphrey Bekaren, who spoke on behalf of the observers, made the call in Port Harcourt.

He said the observers were shocked that INEC disregarded the widely reported violent irregularities to begin the process of declaring results in the state.

‘’ We request all lovers of democracy to join us in calling for the outright cancellation of the phony election.

‘’ Unless this is done, we would have sown the seed that could eventually grow into providing a shade of fear and death over us,’’ he said.

According to Bekaren, what happened in Rivers was a far cry from what election should be.

‘’ What we saw did not meet international standard of electioneering, not even the ones set by the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC,’’ he said.

He said there were reported incidents like deliberate delays and diversion of electoral materials, attacks on electoral officers, widespread arson and voter intimidation.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Rivers, Mrs Gesila Khan, said INEC cancelled election in centres with reported electoral malpractices.

She said re-run elections took place in six local government areas in the state where electoral malpractices were reported.

He had also served with the Bauchi state government from 1983 to 1992, rising to the position of a Deputy Director, before transferring his service to the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation, where he finally delved into the private sector as a professional builder.
