2027: Information minister denies governorship ambition in Niger

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has distanced himself from the purported interest in the Niger State governorship seat in 2027.

Idris said he is fully focused on his responsibilities in the ministry.

The Minister made the clarification following a write-up by one of his aides, Sa’idu Enagi, insinuating that he is interested in the Niger state governorship seat.

The Minister, according to a statement by his media aide, Rabin Ibrahim, has since suspended the aide.

The disclaimer reads, “The office of the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, wishes to bring to the attention of the general public a write-up, written by an aide, Sa’idu Enagi, titled ‘Malagi 2027,’ in which permutations for the 2027 Niger state gubernatorial elections were discussed.

“The write-up and all its contexts are hereby vehemently disclaimed.

“The Honourable Minister is fully focused on his responsibility superintending the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, and has no room for political distractions.

“Please disregard the write-up as the Honourable Minister neither directed nor approved the publication.

“The Honourable Minister has directed an immediate investigation, and the aide has been issued a letter of suspension with immediate effect.

“It is noteworthy that the Honourable Minister and his home state governor, His Excellency Mohammed Umaru Bago, enjoy a positive, mutual relationship for the greater good of Niger state, and therefore, speculations about the 2027 elections will appear inimical to these noble objectives.”

FG to deploy Ambassadors in 2026, says Information Minister

Indications emerged on Monday that the recently cleared ambassadorial nominees will not assume duties at their various posts until 2026.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this during a press conference in Abuja.

He recalled that the Senate last week confirmed 67 ambassadorial nominees appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following the recall of all Nigerian ambassadors in 2023.

Idris explained that the confirmed nominees will first undergo an orientation programme before being deployed to their respective countries of assignment.

Speaking at his end-of-year press briefing, the minister said the ambassadors’ eventual resumption would significantly enhance Nigeria’s diplomatic engagement and presence on the global stage.

“In 2026, our newly appointed ambassadors will take up their posts in their countries of assignment, strengthening our bilateral relations and advancing our visibility and strategic engagements in the global community,” he said.

On Nigeria’s international standing, Idris noted that the country has continued to play its role effectively and remains a respected global actor.

He added that Nigeria had resolved its issues with the United States through diplomatic channels, stressing that relations between both countries remain intact and undamaged.

“On the international stage, in 2025, we navigated complex international diplomacy with maturity and principle. The recent diplomatic spat with the United States has been resolved through firm, respectful engagement, culminating in a strengthened partnership,” he said.

To underscore his claim, the Minister revealed that Nigeria and the U.S recently signed a five-year bilateral health agreement running into over N5 billion.

“Just last week, the Federal Government of Nigeria signed a five-year, $5.1B bilateral health cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government of the United States – in which the US will provide $2.1B in grant funding, while Nigeria commits $3 billion. This has been described as the largest co-investment by any country to date under the America First Global Health Strategy. It will strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system, save lives, and attract investment.

“Indeed, Nigeria is no longer on the side-lines; we are a confident and strategic partner on the global stage, defending our national interests and attracting beneficial partnerships. Just last month, we regained our Category C seat on the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council for the 2026–2027 biennium, a celebrated comeback following 14 years of absence.

“Also in 2025, various Nigerians assumed significant international positions across various sectors, including Chairperson of the Council of the World Customs Organisation, Executive Director of the World Health Organisation’s Health Emergencies Programme, Vice Chair of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council, and Vice President of the International Association for Ports and Harbours in Tokyo. Additionally, this year we secured hosting rights for the Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) 2026, and the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) 2027, one of the largest trade gatherings on the African continent.”

Why Tinubu’s administration introduced NELFUND – Information Minister

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Muhammed Idris, says introduction of the Nigerian Educational Loan Fund (NELFUND) is to ensure that no Nigerian child is denied access to quality higher education.

Idris, stated this on Monday in Ibadan at a Town Hall meeting organised by the Ministry to sensitise the public on the midterm achievements of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the sensitisation campaign is ‘Tinubu Administration’s Mid-Term Report.’

Idris, who was represented by the Head of Federal Ministry of Information in Oyo State, Mr Moses Oyelade, said that the country had suffered a regime of haphazard human development indices over the years.

According to him, the nation’s Human Development Index (HDI) was not what it should be, therefore President Bola Tinubu resolved to address the challenge.

He said that this resolve of President Tinubu was what activated the NELFUND initiative.

Idris asserted that over 5,000 students of the University of Ibadan in Oyo State have benefited from NELFUND.

The minister further said that the President Tinubu administration had been working assiduously and through its policies and programmes transforming the country.

He said that the town hall meeting was meant to present the stewardship of President Tinubu’s administration in the last two years.

In his presentation, the event’s Resource Person, Dr Solomon Oyeleye, who is the Acting Director of Parents’ Engagements and Alumni Relations, Caleb University, Lagos, lauded the economic-policies of the Tinubu administration.

Oyeleye said the removal of oil subsidy was in order, noting that the decision was risky, but it was a necessity “because until that time, we were spending more than 80 per cent of our revenue on servicing loans.

“Even though, we are not there yet, but what the President has done so far is guiding us towards a direction that our forefathers actually envisioned.”

He urged the Federal Government to engage with the stakeholders; Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU); the health workers, among others, to ensure that the country does not lose the gains of the oil subsidy removal.

Oyeleye also canvassed federal support for regional security outfits, such as ‘Amotekun’ to  empower them to better complement the police and other security agencies.

He equally recommended that social programmes should be enlarged to cover more of the South-West.

Highlighting the achievements of President Tinubu’s administration in Oyo state, the Controller of Works, Federal Ministry of Works, Mr Victor Kolawole, said that the government, in the last two years, embarked on a number of road construction/ rehabilitation across the state.

Kolawole said that Oyo state plays a vital role in the economic and transportation sector of Nigeria because it was a gateway to other regions in country.

He said that the FG in March re-awarded the contract for the completion of Oyo-Ogbomoso dual carriage-way.

According to him, the new contractor was working aggressively on the project.

He also said that work was ongoing on the Saki-Okerete road, “which is a transborder road.

“Also, Ibadan-Oyo road is undergoing rehabilitation while Ibadan-Ife- Ilesa road reconstruction is receiving federal government attention,” the controller said.

According to him, the Federal Ministry of Works, under the leadership of Sen. David Umahi, due to evolving realities, had to rescope the Ibadan-Ife- Ilesa road project to reflect technical, financial  and social considerations.

“The ministry is determined and committed to overcoming this challenges and delivering the project to meet the socio-economic aspirations of the people and the Renewed Hope Agenda of this present administration,” he said.

Kolawole maintained that the federal government through the Works ministry would continue to deliver quality road projects for the benefits of Nigerians.

In the same vein, Solomon Adewole, who spoke on behalf of the Ministry of Housing, state office, said the administration was currently constructing 250- housing units, known as Renewed Hope Estate at Erunmu in Ibadan.

Adewole said the Renewed Hope Estate project comprises 25 units of one bedroom, 75 units of two bedroom and 25 units of three bedroom.

He said the houses were meant for the less privileged, because of its affordability to the common masses.

Adewole said that  road network into the estate had been completed while the real project was at over 60 per cent completion.

In his remarks, the Dean of Students, University of Ibadan, Prof. Demola Lewis, appreciated President Tinubu’s administration for the introduction of NELFUND.

Lewis confirmed that not less that 5,000 students of the University of Ibadan, had benefited from the initiative.

He urged government to further engage in students-friendly initiatives that would assist more students in their academic pursuit.

  • Tinubu committed to ending insecurity, says information minister

Tinubu committed to ending insecurity, says information minister

The current administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is fully committed to tackling insecurity in Nigeria, according to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.

Speaking on Wednesday at the Defence Headquarters First Quarter Media Stakeholders Seminar in Abuja, Idris emphasised that the government’s dedication to addressing security challenges is clear through significant investments in modern military assets, ongoing training and retraining of the Armed Forces and security personnel, and enhanced intelligence-gathering efforts at all levels.

The seminar, themed “Media as a Key Component of Joint Task Force Commanders’ Operational Success,” highlighted the role of the media in supporting security operations and the administration’s broader efforts to combat insecurity across the country.

He said: “Insecurity and terrorism are not uniquely Nigerian challenges – they are global threats that even the most advanced and sophisticated nations of the world continue to grapple with. From Europe to the Middle East, from North America to Africa, the reality of today’s world is that no country is entirely immune from the scourge of violent extremism and organised criminality.

“However, what truly makes the difference is how nations respond. The Tinubu administration is unrelenting in its commitment to overcoming these threats and ensuring the safety and security of all Nigerians. Under the 8-Point Renewed Hope Agenda of this administration, the cardinal objective is undoubtedly to guarantee our national security through a clear and strategic focus on investing in the right tools, systems, and personnel to secure our nation.

“This includes massive investments in the acquisition of modern military assets, the training and retraining of our armed forces and security personnel, and the strengthening of intelligence-gathering mechanisms across all levels. These efforts reflect the seriousness with which President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is confronting the security challenge head-on.”

The Minister, who was represented by the Director-General of Voice of Minister, Jibrin Ndace, described the seminar as “timely and noble initiative”, which reflects deep understanding of the Chief of Defence on the critical role of communication in modern warfare, “especially in an era where information can influence outcomes as much as firepower.”

He noted that strengthening the partnership between the military and the media was essential not only for operational success but for building public trust and fostering a national security-conscious citizenry.

“The media, without a doubt, is a worthy partner in our national security architecture. As the watchdog of society, the press must strike a delicate balance between the public’s right to know and the imperative to protect national interest,” Idris said.

He urged the media to deny terrorists the oxygen of publicity by refusing to give prominence to their “cowardly acts”, but instead amplify the heroism of our Armed Forces, the resilience of affected communities, and the progress being made in the pursuit of peace.

The Minister said: “Let us be clear: whether they are called Boko Haram, bandits, terrorists, kidnappers, unknown gunmen — they are all criminals, enemies of the Nigerian state, and must be treated as such. The responsibility to defeat them rests on all of us, in government, in the military, and in the media.

“National security is a collective responsibility, and the media plays a pivotal role in educating and enlightening the populace on how they can contribute meaningfully to this cause.

“Conversely, what the media must not amplify, in the spirit of unity and national cohesion, is negative and incendiary rhetoric that trails communal clashes as seen in recent situations.

“The media must also serve as a platform to mobilise public support for military operations. We must encourage citizens to volunteer timely and useful information to security agencies.”

In his remarks, Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru, said the military must explore innovative ways to pass adequate information about troops operations to the public.

Badaru said that by doing so it would be able to win public trust, enhance unity and check fake news.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, said the seminar marked a significant milestone in our collective effort to enhance our efficacy of media operations within the frameworks of Nigeria’s defence objectives.

The CDS, who was represented by Chief of Defence Policy and Plans, Air Vice Marshal Sayo Olatunde, said the event was significant due to the evolution of the role of the media in modern warfare beyond its traditional scope of information dissemination.

He said: “Today, media are integral to the execution of tactical, operational, and strategic plans and further serve as a powerful tool for shaping public perceptions and opinions while ensuring transparency and accountability among military forces.

“The contemporary security landscape is not only characterised by conventional and asymmetric threats but also involves a battle of narrative among opposing forces. Accordingly, the information space is becoming as equally contested as the battlefield. This implies that how we communicate our mission, counter misinformation, and maintain public trust is crucial to the outcome of Joint Task Force operations.

“This is because contemporary military operations do not take place in isolation, as every action of a Joint Task Force is constantly subjected to public scrutiny. Implicitly, the way our operations are perceived by local, public, and international audiences determines their effectiveness.”

The CDS said that while media operations offer immense strategic benefits, they also pose significant challenges, such as the rise of fake news and adversarial misinformation.

“The 24-hour news cycle and social media demand real-time responses requiring Joint Task Force commanders to maintain constant vigilance.

“It is on this premise that it becomes crucial that media operations be professionalised, proactive, and fully integrated into operational planning. Accordingly, commanders and media professionals must work together to ensure that the right messages are conveyed at the right time to the right audience,” the CDS said.

  • Tax Reform: Nigeria’s tax system long overdue for reform – Information Minister

Tax Reform: Nigeria’s tax system long overdue for reform – Information Minister

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has emphasized the urgent need for reforms in Nigeria’s tax administration system, citing taxpayers’ attitudes towards taxation as a key challenge.

Idris made this statement while serving as Chairman at the 2024 Annual Public Lecture, AGM, and Awards of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Kaduna State chapter.

The event, held under the theme “Tax Reform: The Role of Public Relations in Fostering Constructive Dialogue for National Economic Renaissance,” brought together stakeholders to discuss the proposed Tax Reform Bills currently before the National Assembly.

The Minister highlighted the importance of reforming the tax system to enhance national economic growth, underscoring the critical role of public relations in facilitating meaningful dialogue and fostering public trust.

He stated: “The theme has brought to the fore yet again, the place of constructive dialogue as a vital pillar of democracy while noting that the ongoing review of the country’s tax laws is timely and crucial, especially as part of a larger set of macroeconomic reforms, just as he commended the Presidential Committee on Fiscal and Tax Reform for an excellent job, in terms of public engagement.

According to the Minister, “The topic before us today is a sensitive yet important and inescapable one: taxation. It was the American statesman, Benjamin Franklin, who famously said that “In this world, nothing is certain except death and taxes.

“Let me make it clear that, even with our keenness for fundamental reform of Nigeria’s governance and fiscal systems, the Tinubu administration will never do anything to undermine the ideals of participatory democracy. The current mandate and responsibility that we have for governing and reforming Nigeria at this time came by way of democracy, and we will continue to live up to those very high democratic standards and expectations.

“All over the world, effective taxation is important as a source of financial power for governments to provide social services for their citizens. However, there is plenty of reason to believe and assert that Nigeria’s tax administration system has become long overdue for reform, on account of design and implementation flaws as well as the general attitudes of taxpayers toward taxation.

“In light of this, the ongoing review of the country’s tax laws and realities is timely and crucial, especially as part of a larger set of macroeconomic reforms aimed at setting the country on an irreversible path of growth and development. The full details of the new tax bills are available in the public domain – one must commend the Presidential Committee on Fiscal and Tax Reform for an excellent job in this regard, in terms of public engagement – so I will not attempt to go over these details again here.

“What I will say is that it is very inspiring and heartwarming to see Nigerians from all walks of life coming out to express their views and opinions on these matters of critical national importance, as such is the very essence and meaning of democracy. In spite of the challenge of trust deficit that tends to crop up around matters of governance in Nigeria, we have still been able to have what can be adjudged as robust debate on this sensitive issue.

“President Tinubu has also been very clear that the Executive will listen to and work with all stakeholders to ensure that all concerns are duly and comprehensively addressed. We will continue to ensure open lines of communication and engagement with the National Assembly and all other stakeholders on these taxation bills. We are all in this together, as one people, one nation, and just as we are being called upon to make collective sacrifices, we will also collectively reap the abundant social and economic benefits of all of these necessary reforms.

“It is at times like this that we are reminded of the important roles of Public Relations in the maintenance of a functioning and healthy society. By facilitating purposeful communication, building mutual understanding, and transparent promotion of ideas, Public Relations practice and practitioners can help create a culture of collaboration and progress.

“Also, as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu continues to implement an ambitious fiscal reform agenda that will devolve more resources to Nigeria’s State and Local Governments, and ultimately to the Nigerian people, in the spirit of true federalism, citizen engagement will become ever more critical.

“Those of us who manage communications for the Federal Government understand that we have a lot of work on our hands. We are up to the task, and we will continue to deploy innovative and comprehensive mechanisms to provide the public with insights and enlightened information that will bolster public trust and confidence in the reform narratives of the Renewed Hope agenda.

“We will also be looking to count on the strong support of the NIPR, among many other stakeholders. Which is why this dialogue is very much welcome, and commendable.

“Society advances by mutually respectful engagements, where we give voice to diverse opinions, and respect those who we disagree with. We will certainly not always agree on all issues, perhaps not even on most. But we will always be guided by the fact that the things that unite us – our common humanity, our nationhood, our sense of patriotism, our collective vision for a Nigeria that works for all – will always be more important and more meaningful than our differences of age, religion, region, ideology, gender, culture, and social class,” the Minister said.

Earlier, the President of NIPR, Dr. Ike Neliaku pleaded the institute’s support for the expected reality and implementation of the tax reform in the country by using the vocal voices of the institute across the country.

Also the Lead Discussant, Professor Mustapha Bagudo Muhammad gave a thorough insight into the numerous advantages of the reform while all the Panelists including Senator Shehu Sani, Professor Cosmos Eze and Professor Hauwa’u Evelyn Yusuf all gave their nod to the proposed tax reform.

Senator Sani in his submission said, countries like Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates have started taking measures to address their post oil feature, adding that the Tax Reform is one of the very important steps for Nigeria and Nigerian economic feature.

Speaking also, Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi and former Chairman Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Kaduna State, Rev. Dr. John Joseph Hayab both argued that the tax reform was necessary, however called for more awareness creation and sensitization.
