Tinubu’s reforms are aimed at addressing past mistakes, says Information Minister

Information Minister Mohammed Idris, has said that President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s primary goal is to rectify poor policies and dysfunctional choices that have historically hindered Nigeria’s progress.

Idris made this known while briefing the Diplomatic Community on the nationwide protest on Wednesday in Abuja.

Idris said: “Tinubu is addressing the poor policies and dysfunctional choices with bold and effective solutions, and not to impose hardship on Nigerians but to

“ Tinubu is determined to implement reforms that would drive sustainable growth and improve the quality of life for all citizens, stressing that the current challenges are only temporary.

“It is important to kick off on this note: that President Tinubu did not come to office to cause hardship or make life difficult for Nigerians.

“He has come to office with bold solutions to historical problems; with the determination to correct many of the poor policies and dysfunctional choices that have held us back as a nation for decades.

“The president assumed office during one of Nigeria’s most challenging periods in its history, where the country was spending 97 per cent of all its revenue on debt service.

“This is coupled with widespread poverty, rising unemployment, dilapidated infrastructure, and insecurity.

Faced with these daunting realities, he said, the administration took decisive action and implemented long-overdue reforms to save the economy from collapse.

The minister said for decades, the costly, wasteful and unsustainable fuel subsidy regime had denied Nigeria the opportunity to invest in critical infrastructure, social service, and the welfare of its citizens.

He added that as a result of the waste, Tinubu took a very painful decision to abolish the fuel subsidy.

“He then redirected the funds towards critical sectors such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and security, which directly impact citizens’ well-being and the development of the country.”

The minister explained that Tinubu was not under any illusion that the withdrawal of fuel subsidy and the harmonization of foreign exchange rates would not come with some transitional pains.

“That informed the decision of the Federal Government to design comprehensive intervention programmes to cushion the transitional pains.

“We have been very determined about ensuring that these interventions are fully implemented, and bring the intended relief to Nigerians,” he said.

On the nationwide protest, Idris said the government respects the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, which are cornerstones of all democratic societies.

“But what began as a peaceful protest in some states and the Federal Capital Territory, was hijacked by elements who infiltrated the protest and orchestrated violent activities that destroyed lives and properties.

“There were reports of arson, vandalism, looting, and clashes with law enforcement agents in several cities. Tragically, these incidents led to the loss of innocent lives and significant damage to properties,”he said.

Idris, assured that the worst is over, adding that,  the Federal Government has launched an investigation into the violence that occurred during the protest in order to identify and bring to justice all those responsible.

“We are committed to preventing the recurrence of such unfortunate incidents in the future.”

May 29: Press freedom thrives under Tinubu, says information minister

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has emphasised that press freedom is thriving under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Minister Idris, who stated this on Wednesday, May 22, at a briefing kicking off President Bola Tinubu’s first anniversary in office, held at the Radio House in Abuja, also assured that the President intends to make media practice even freer.

He, however, stressed that the freedom comes with responsibility, honestly, and patriotically

The minister also warned that purveyors of fake news, misinformation, and disinformation are not within the scope of press freedom, even as he urged media practitioners to uphold the highest standards of professionalism.

“Democracy cannot go without media freedom, cannot go without press freedom. The media in Nigeria has been largely free and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is determined to make it even freer.

“Freedom that the media enjoys also carries with it responsibility. You cannot say what is untrue, you cannot say things to malign someone deliberately, and call it press freedom or freedom of expression.

“What that means is that while it is within the right of the media practitioners to report whatever they think they should report about, they should also have a great duty to ensure that this is being done responsibly, honestly, and with a deep sense of patriotism.

“It is us, the practitioners in this space, who have the greater duty to clean up this space, by ensuring that anybody who is coming to practice within this space is also doing that responsibly”, he said.

The Minister also called on individuals, bloggers, and social media users to join the effort to counter misinformation and clean up the media space, saying “it is not just a government’s responsibility, it is the responsibility of all of us – government, media practitioners, individuals, bloggers, and those in the social media space.”

He acknowledged that the spread of misinformation is a global problem, but emphasized that it is a collective responsibility to address it, even as he expressed hope that the UNESCO standard on media regulation will provide a blueprint for responsible media practice.

“The issue of misinformation and fake news is not just a Nigerian phenomenon. It is a problem the world over. But we have to ensure that we come together to clean up this space so that Nigeria can breed the desired prosperity.

“The UNESCO standard that is being unveiled now will hopefully provide that blueprint for all of us to operate with so that nobody seems to be gagged, nobody’s view appears to be stifled. The media will continue to enjoy its freedom, but will also ensure that whatever we do is in the best interest of our country”, he said.

FG to use sport to foster national unity – Information Minister

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has stressed the administration’s commitment to harnessing the transformative power of sports to deepen unity and cohesion in the country.

This is as the Minister of Sport, John Enoh, sought collaboration on sport coverage.

The duo spoke in Abuja during a courtesy visit by the management team of the ministry of Sport to Radio House.

Idris was of the opinion that sports should be on the front burner of government’s priorities because of its significance role in nation building and development.

Idris said: “There is also something I think that we need to talk about and that is the issue of national integration and cohesion that all of us are aspiring to achieve.

“As you look forward to the ministry to partner with you to pursue sports development, we also look forward to the Ministry of Sports Development to forge further national unity and cohesion.

“If you are in doubt of what sports can do for our country, just try to be on the streets when Nigeria is playing. Everybody forgets about North-South, South-West, North-East and North-whatever. Everybody comes together and nobody talks about the person who has scored whether he’s from my village or he’s from another village. Everybody talks about Nigeria; everyone wears the Nigerian flag on that day.”

Idris also explained that the President Bola Tinubu understood the importance of sport as a unifying force.

He said this explained why the president approved N1.2 billion in salary and allowances arrears owed to sportsmen and women as well as sports administrators in order to motivate them to commit themselves to the country.

He commended the Minister of Sport, Senator Enoh, for the enthusiasm he has displayed so far in the development of sports in the country particularly the dazzling performance of the Super Eagles at the 2023 AFCON, preparations for the 2024 Olympics and the qualification of the Super Falcons for the sports fiesta in Paris, the relaunch of the Challenge Cup as the President’s Federation Cup and the elevation of Super Eagles in the FIFA ranking from 42nd position to the 30th position.

In response to the request of the Minister of Sports for more media exposure to sporting events in the country, Idris gave the approval to set up a committee to identify areas of collaboration between the two ministries.

He mentioned the National Sports Festival coming up this year in Ogun State, the National Youth Games in Asaba and the Para Games as some of the major events coming up this year.

Jollof rice war continues at CBL, as Eko Kings face Warriors

The impression was that Nigeria’s Vice President Prof Yemi Osinbajo had settled the jollof rice war after the country’s Information Minister Lai Mohammed had stoked the fire by making an unpopular declaration concerning the ‘fight.’

But the debate for the country with the best jollof rice is continuing with the Continental Basketball League as Senegalese-American, Ndiaye Rawane has said the best jollof rice is prepared and served in Senegal.

The 6-10 centre who stars for Lagos City Warriors in the CBL May Madness tournament told the media he was not just in Nigeria for the basketball tournament but would also like to use his time in Lagos to correct the “wrong” impression that Nigeria offers the best jollof rice.

Please permit me to quickly correct something I heard on my arrival here. It’s not Nigeria that has the best jollof rice; we (Senegal) make the best jollof rice and that’s the undisputed fact.

When challenged on the spot, the centre from North Carolina, USA maintained his stand. He was, however, quick to add his love for Nigeria despite the jollof rice differences.

“I have a couple of very good Nigerian friends in North Carolina but it makes a whole lot of difference visiting their place of origin. It’s my first time in Nigeria but I know I will surely have a good time here.”

Apart from those from other continents, there are players from about 11 African countries in the competition. Thomas Doug of the Lagos City Warriors is an American power forward also in Lagos for the pro basketball jams. He also got a taste of the jollof rice war even before he could get a spoon of the cuisine.

“The jollof rice matter has touched me because of the way it’s been discussed and so I am now really interested. There was so much debate in the bus that conveyed us from the airport to the hotel on arrival. The jollof rice argument got me laughing.”

Today the players will put aside the cuisine arguments as Eko Kings take on Lagos Warriors from 7pm in the only match of the day at the Teslim Balogun Stadium. The Kings have won their two games, while the Warriors will be looking to get their first win this Pan African tournament set across Lagos, Yaounde and Libreville.

In the last games played on Sunday, Yaoundé Giants and Eko Kings won their second games to stay one hundred percent. Giants captained by Christian Bayang defeated Lagos City Stars 92-64 in the first of the two matches played on Sunday. The experienced guard shot 11 points as the Cameroonian team won their second straight games. The crowd favourite and Giants point guard Jones Esters led scoring on both sides hitting 27 points. The American shot 87.5 from the free throw line. Prinsloo who shot 24 points led City Stars.

  • Gambia, third African nation to withdraw from ICC

Gambia has become the third African nation to submit its withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC) to the United Nations.

Information minister, Sheriff Baba Bojang, who announced the withdrawal on Wednesday on national television, said the acronym ICC stood for “International Caucasian Court.”

“The court focused on “the persecution and humiliation of people of colour, especially Africans,” Bojang added.

Gambia’s withdrawal came several days after South Africa announced it would leave the ICC, saying its membership hampered its efforts to resolve conflicts in Africa.

Earlier this month, Burundi’s government also decided to quit the court in The Hague.

ICC Assembly of States Parties President Sidiki Kaba, who is also the justice minister of Senegal, on Monday called the withdrawals a “watershed moment’’ for justice.

The report says since the ICC entered into force in July 2002, only Africans have been on trial.

  • WHY MINISTRY TOOK TRAVEL LOAN FROM NBC – LAI MOHAMMED

WHY MINISTRY TOOK TRAVEL LOAN FROM NBC – LAI MOHAMMED

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has said his letter requesting for a N13.12 million loan from the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission was in order.

He explained that the loan was to cover travelling expenses of his five-man delegation to China. The request had generated furore leading to wide criticisms.

The minister’s defence was in a statement yesterday in Abuja by Mr. Peter Dama, the Director, Public Relations and Protocol in the Ministry.

According to the statement, the letter to the NBC requesting for a loan of N13.12 million was mischievously leaked to the social media by staff of the commission.

The statement clarified that the loan was to cover tickets and travel expenses of a five-member delegation being led by the Minister to Beijing, China, for a Conference on Tourism for Development.

“The loan being requested for is for the ministry to meet up its obligations to enable the Minister and members of his delegation attend the all important conference.

“The loan is not meant for the minister alone as personal expenses, but for the expenses of all members of the delegation. The Conference is being organised by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation in conjunction with the Government of the People’s Republic of China, under the overall theme “Tourism for Peace and Development.

“It will feature amongst others, discussions on major issues for sustainable development including the contribution of Tourism to poverty reduction and peace.

“The conference is a veritable platform to develop synergy and partnership with players in the global Tourism Industry which will go a long way in boosting our drive to diversify the Nigerian economy,” it stated.

The statement added that on the sideline of the conference, the delegation would have discussion in China with Set Top Box Manufacturers.

It stated that the manufacturers were meant to establish manufacturing factories in Nigeria for the boxes for digital broadcasting processes rather than the current situation in which the boxes were being imported.

“This is meant to conserve our foreign exchange and to also create avenue for job creation for our citizens. It is clear that the conference is an all important gathering that will benefit Nigeria, contribute towards diversification of its revenue base and create employment opportunities for Nigerians,” it stated.

The statement said that it was not unusual for an agency under the ministry to assist in order to carry out government functions.

It said that the request was discussed with the Acting Director General of NBC, who agreed to assist with the loan before the letter was written.

“It is therefore shocking to find out that an internal memorandum from the Ministry could be leaked out to the social media by saboteurs in order to embarrass the government.”

No rift over 2016 budget – Information Minister

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has said that there is no rift between the executive and legislative arm of government over the passage of the 2016 budget.

Mohammed said this on Thursday when he paid a visit to the Corporate Headquarters of the Leadership Newspapers in Abuja.

“On the passage of the budget, I want to clear the misconception. There is absolutely no rift between the executive arm of government and legislative arm of government.

“It is not true that the president has refused to assent to the budget. The fact remains that it (budget) is not even before him.

“The practice really is that when the budget is approved like that, there is what we call headline figure that is approved, then, it will take a few days for the National Assembly to throw up the details.’’

The minister said it was the original copy of budget that would be taken to the president after the necessary correction.

He also said that there was no setback in the budget, adding that the Ministry of Budget and National Planning was working closely with the National Assembly to ensure hitch-free passage of the budget.

The minister said that the signing of the budget by President Muhammadu Buhari would reflate the economy and uplift millions of Nigerians out of abject poverty.

He said that the budget would focus on infrastructure development which would in turn create jobs for unemployed Nigerians and wealth for workers in the construction industry.

“It is a budget of social inclusion. It is a budget that everybody is included’’.

Mohammed said that there was N500 billion provision for social intervention programmes targeted at employing 500,000 graduates, to be trained as teachers and deployed to primary schools.

He said the programmes also aimed at empowering 370,000 non-graduates such as artisans and technicians.

“It targets at training one million people such as farmers, market women, traders and entrepreneurs as well as giving them loan to start off.

“It aims at giving one meal to 4.5 million pupils from class 1 to 3 per day. It is also aimed at giving N5,000 to vulnerable Nigerians such as widows, aged people and disabled people in the rural areas.’’

The minister said the social intervention programmes also targeted at providing bursary and scholarship for students studying science, technology and engineering.
