Why some men don’t like overly successful women – Actress Ini Edo

Popular Nollywood actress, Ini Edo Obong, has asserted that some men are threatened by overly successful women and their strength.

She said men prefer submissive women who they can control and pull around.

The thespian said, personally, she prefers to be a “queen,” stressing that she doesn’t like the idea of “lording over” a man.

Speaking in the latest episode of Toke Makinwa’s podcast, Edo said: “Some men are threatened by women’s strength. Because we can come off as if we are doing too much. First of all, you’re a woman, you’re beautiful, you’re here and there…

“Naturally, men want to see you not so overly successful just so that they can pull you around, you can be the woman, cook and clean and do all the basic things that they’ve grown up to know is expected of women.

“So when you get too strong, it’s almost like you’re competing with their ego. But the truth is, like I always say, I like to be the queen. I’m not a woman who is looking to subdue any man or ride over any man.

“No matter how successful I get, I don’t think I would like to have a man that I am lording over. Then what is the beauty of it? I mean, the beauty of it is me walking beside my man and he giving me instructions and protecting me.”

She added that it is hard to find men who understand that successful women aren’t threats to their position as the head of the home.

Five Nollywood actresses who married other women’s men

In the words of D’banj, “Love is a beautiful thing”. Most women, regardless of how lowly, averagely, or highly placed they are, look forward to the day they become one with their sweethearts – to become husbands and wives.

Ordinarily, there shouldn’t have been any buzz or razzmatazz about the subject, except that when a woman gets another woman’s man, especially when she is a super star actress, YES!, It is a big deal.

Is this women’s inhumanity to women? You decide:

    Funke Akindele

Popularly called Jenifa, the 40-year-old Ikorodu-born funny actress’s marriage to Mr. Kehinde Oloyede can be said to be one of the shortest marriage in the history of Nollywood.   Everyone, aside the actress knew the marriage was bound to end before it even started. A superstar in the Nigerian movie industry and a University of Lagos graduate, walking down the aisle with a man who already had about six children from three women?

    funke akindele and Ex-Husband

Talking about how the union went awry, the ever funny actress said: “I was abused emotionally and verbally. Really, I felt we could work things out when the trouble started two months after the marriage, but I made up my mind and shut the door of the marriage at him when the trouble was coming to me too much. I stooped to conquer him; buried my fame and name to make him my husband, but it did not work.

“At a point in time, I asked if it’s not the same man that was all over me before we married. He nearly got me off my career. He called me severally; I did not pick his calls but when he realized my silence was tormenting him, he took to Facebook. It’s alright. Ask him when did he come to my house last? He left me here in my rented apartment with nothing and he will just dash in and dash out. He gets abusive, caustic anytime we have a misunderstanding and often told me to my face, he’s going to his wife in Oshodi.”

Funke Akindele is however now back and better and we love that the girlpower in her has continuously made her project ahead in her career.

    Ini Edo

Sultry actress Ini Edo got all blogs buzzing when news came out that she was getting married in 2008 to her American-based hubby, Phillips Ehiagwina. A year earlier, a woman, Ruth, who was said to be Phillips’ wife (as at that time) allegedly wrote an open letter to the actress, warning her to steer clear of her husband.

    Ini Edo with Ex-Husband

She also went further to reveal how promiscuous her husband was, so she won’t end up being dejected and disappointed. The letter read thus: “Hi Ini, I have information that you are having an affair with my husband, Philip Ehiagwina.

He has been deceiving girls all over the place, making them believe he has heaven and earth. You are not the only girl obviously, but Ini watch your back so you don’t regret, I have nothing against you but a piece of advice. I heard that you might be pregnant for him, if it’s true, good luck. I called your manager and told her everything.

You are a very pretty girl and should know how to respect your body. Do not be carried away by flashy things cause that could be deadly too. All that glitters isn’t gold, remember.” But the actress dismissed all these, discrediting the media for misrepresentation of facts. She got married to Mr Phillips and the issue went from sweet to bitter in six years. Her family was said to have returned the brideprice over irreconcilable differences. The beautiful actress who owns a massive N70 million mansion in Lekki is however doing well for herself and has put all her former marriage troubles behind her.

    Mercy Johnson

In 2011, one Mrs. Lovely Okojie sent out an open letter to Mercy Johnson to please release her husband and find a single man to marry. According to the woman, the man in question is the father of her two children and he was still legally married to her at the time. Read the letter below:

    Mercy Johnson with Husband

“My name is Lovely Okojie, legal wife of Prince Odianosen Okojie, the man Mercy Johnson is set to wed in a few weeks. I was referred to you to help me share my story after all else had failed to stop another woman from breaking my home. I used to have a sweet home but now Mercy Johnson is trying to destroy it. I’ve not been able to stop crying or sleep well for the past few months.

“I’m appealing to the world and whoever knows her to please tell her to leave my husband alone. I’m married to this man and there has never been any divorce paper signed. We are still legally married, he’s the love of my life and the father of my two lovely kids. We got married back in 2006 in Regio-Emilia, Italy, attached are pictures of the wedding. At the moment, he’s busy in Nigeria planning to wed Mercy Johnson, abandoning me and our children. Fellow women is this fair? So with all the single guys out there, Mercy could not find herself one. How can a woman not care that she’s destroying the home of another woman, all in the name of getting married desperately. I’m in terrible pains. What do I tell my children?”

All these did not stop the wedding from taking place. Although it caused a bit of delay, the two lovebirds exchanged their vows at a Christ Embassy Church, Oregun, Lagos on Saturday, August 27, 2011, amidst tight security. They are still together, waxing stronger and have been blessed with kids.

    Nujella Njubigbe

    Nuella Njubigbo with Husband

Not many Nigerians knew Nujella until news went around that she broke her colleague’s home.

The fast rising actress was however quick at discrediting the news that she was sleeping with ace Nollywood producer, Tchidi Tchekere. Tchidi was married with 3 kids to Sophia Tchekere, another beautiful actress. The oga producer later ended his six years marriage to Sophia and moved in with Nujella at a new apartment in Ajah. They have been blessed with a baby and they are still very much together.

    Stella Damasus-Aboderin

This particular actress is on the list because of the kind of bad publicity she generates when it comes to men. Reports went viral that the beautiful actress and mother was harbouring another actress, Doris Simeon’s husband, Daniel Ademinokan, but she debunked it, calling it an absurd and senseless report.

Fast forward to few months (abi nah years) later, the lovebirds are on our social media, professing love for each other, with the poor Doris Simeon living her life as it comes. life has been shattered. Doris Simeon and Daniel Adenimokan had a kid, while Aunty Stella has three girls from her first husband. Did we miss anyone on the list? Do add in the comment section!

  • INI EDO: Why I agreed to work with Uche Jombo

Nollywood diva, Ini Edo, who was a co-producer of the movie ‘Heaven on my Mind’ speaks to DUPE AYINLA-OLASUNKANMI, on why she accepted to work on the movie with her friend, Uche Jombo, and how they also argued to find a common ground.

What made you decide to be part of the movie?

When I got the script, what really caught my attention was the fact that there was so much to be learnt from it. The story is actually one that a lot of people can relate with and that is the beauty of telling a story; being able to communicate and get across to the audience.

This is a life experience. The movie is quite funny when you go to watch it after it is been released to the cinemas, but behind the hilarious part, there is something that someone has experience in life. For me it is exciting when I read scripts that have to do with life experiences and capture it in a way that will make people laugh, but also learn from it.

What makes this different from your other roles?

This character is quite different. It is not like I haven’t played such before, but in a way it is special and unique. This character happens to be a Benin princess, who did not believe that some people can come from a home where they do not have it all. It is actually an interesting character and I enjoyed playing it.

What do you look out for when accepting roles?

I am someone who loves to put in all when displaying my character. So when I get to receive a script, and given a role, I look for one that is challenging and different from the ones I have played in the past.

I love roles that look almost impossible to play, I would say difficult roles. I look at roles that are out of my comfort zone that will give me the chance to squeeze myself and ask myself questions after delivering.

The movie ‘Heaven on my Mind’ is a joint effort, tell us about it?

It is a collaboration with Uche Jombo.  Aside that she is a personal friend of mine, she is also someone that I have a lot of admiration for in terms of her work. The quality of work she does, tells how passionate she is on her works and also delivering the best to her audience.

Also, the consistence over the years is also something that is quiet commendable. So, it was quite fun seeing her directorial debut. For me,  it was exciting and interesting watching her do it. I never had doubt that she could do it, because I know how powerful and passionate she can be in what she does.

It was not like I was expecting less, because she is someone I have known for quite a while and I know how controlling she can be in powering and managing things. Her professionalism and commitment were seen in her action.

Did you have an argument while working?

You know because we were together on the team, it was not all about who made the decision, but what we felt was best for the production and cast.

Yes we always argue, but it is for the best of what we both believe in and it is not about personal opinion. But at the end of the day, we always have been able to find a common ground.

What are your expectations on this collaboration?

I am expecting great reviews. People have been able to relate with the movie and say things like ‘yes, I know someone who had gone through that’. I expect people to be very amused and learn from it and open more directorial jobs for Uche.

Are we expecting to see new faces in the movie?

Yes, the lead actor happens to be a new face. He has done some works, but this is about the biggest major job he has done and expects to give him the official announcement to say.

Why him and not a prominent face?

I was on a job with him, and I saw the potential in him. When I read the script, I told Uche I had the perfect actor for the role and he was asked to come for the audition. He has the look and the delivery; he has the command of English and deceptive look for the role.

Because I like to have new people on my production, I have always done that with most of my productions, so I felt he was new and fits into the character.

  • INI EDO Selling yourself for movie roles doesn’t work

INI EDO Selling yourself for movie roles doesn’t work

Even though she was recently appointed the Special Assistant to the Governor of Akwa Ibom State on Tourism,Nollywood diva, Ini Edo, has said that her loyalty to the Nigerian movie industry is unwavering. The coordinator of the first-ever Akwa Ibom State Festival, otherwise called IbomFest, shares nuggets of wisdom with aspiring actors in this interview with OVWE MEDEME. She also speaks on life in the corridors of power, plans for Ibomfest and other issues.

AS Special Assistant to a state governor, what will happen to your acting career?

I would like to state that my stint in government won’t affect my career as an actress. Since my appointment to serve my state, I have been receiving calls from producers, and actors alike to extend their hands of fellowship in building the Nigerian project. Again, I have been invited to play different roles in the movie industry, so nothing has changed.

With your appointment, what impact would you be bringing to the Nigerian movie industry?

I like to think of it as an advantage to movie producers that one of their own has a government appointment. Again; I am not the first to be so appointed in Nigeria. Other notable movie actors have been appointed and they contributed their quota to the development of the industry and this is what I aim to do.

How will you describe your work in government?

My work in government is basically to assist my state governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, in the area of tourism development. This entails how as a state we can harness the rich tourism potential into a world class money-making venture that will also attract direct foreign investment into the state and increase tourist traffic into Akwa Ibom State.

Have you faced any challenge combining it with acting?

Certainly, nothing good comes easy but I still try to do my work religiously and I put in my very best to uphold the confidence reposed in me having been so appointed to serve my state.

What is the approach of your government towards developing tourism in the state?

Our Governor, Udom Emmanuel, has a five-point agenda and among them, tourism is encapsulated in the industrialisation drive. I would like to state here that the governor is very keen in developing the vast tourism potential that abound in the state and this has given strength to his endorsement of the Ibomfest Heritage Festival which is coming up from 15th to 17thof December. For us, developing the tourism sector will increase tourist traffic to our state, increase the IGR and employ a lot of our youths and others of workable age.

What impact do you think the approach will have on the state?

The approach, I think, will further reposition the state as a tourism haven and destination of choice to discerning tourist and investors. The ripple effect will show as many unemployed people will be engaged in one form of trade or the other. Already, my office, in partnership with a tourism consulting firm, is beginning to train young people to become tourist guides to fill in the blank spaces of those who should take guests around our tourism sites.

What is so unique about Ibomfest?

Ibomfest is unique in many ways. First, its theme is Our Cultures Beyond Borders,so I would like to say it’s not a carnival of some sort.It is festival to showcase our way of life, our natural endowments, our rich cultural heritage and our most widely celebrated cuisines. Every local government area in the state is blessed with huge deposits of natural resources; all of these will be showcased to the admiration of spectators, tourists and visitors during the festival in December.

What challenges have you faced in putting the project together?

I would not call them challenges. It is all about just having the urgent need to get the right people, the right team to work with to achieve this task. That, I believe, I have and so far our team is working night and day to make sure the project succeeds. Since our governor runs an all-inclusive government, he endorsed the project after my presentations to him. Having been convinced of the economic benefits accruing to the state, he gave his nod and endorsed it.

What role will Ibomfest play in the strategy of the government?

As I had earlier mentioned, Ibomfest is targeted at inviting investors into the state to be part of the industrialisation drive of government. So, the festival is one of the many platforms to achieve this noble goal.

Security is an issue in Nigeria. What plans do you have for visitors coming to your state?

I can boldly state that Akwa Ibom State is the safest place now in Nigeria. As such, visitors into the state will not have problems of security as there are armed security personnel everywhere, offering maximum security to all persons. Our hotels are all mobilised to clean up their environment in readiness to receive visitors. All hospitality business owners have also begun to train their staff in preparation for the festival. Local tours will be organised to allow our visitors see Akwa Ibom and its beauty.

What are some of the activities you have lined up?

The festival has four components. One of them is The Parade of Colours where all local government areas will parade in the streets of Uyo to showcase their rich cultural attires. The Beach Fashion Show which will showcase Ibeno beach, the longest stretch of sandy beach in the coast of Africa, our Akwa Ibom cuisines as well as a Boat Regatta. Since we are riverine, it’s important to showcase our strength in boat-building through this colorful boat regatta competition.

Is there provision for corporate bodies to be part of the project?

Yes Ibomfestis expected to be a public private partnership-driven project, as such we call on all corporate bodies in the country to come and be part of it be way of sponsorship or partnership to make this vision a reality. Already, some corporate bodies are beginning to make enquires while some have indicated strong interest to participate.

In all of these, what would you like to be remembered for?

By God’s special grace, I plan to build the Ibomfest Heritage Festival to be self-sponsored, attract tourist traffic yearly to the state, increase the IGR and create employment and partner development agencies and government to develop tourist sites in Akwa Ibom State.

What nugget of wisdom will you want to share with budding actors in Nigeria?

The primary advice I will offer any budding actor is that selling yourself for roles to a producer to get ahead does not work in the long run; not as well as hard work and talent. Develop your craft and always give your all in depicting any role you accept to play whether big or small. That’s what gets you noticed and that’s what wins awards.

Ini Edo speaks on failed marriage

In an all-revealing interview on Rubbin Minds with Ebuka, Nollywood actress, Ini Edo talked about her failed marriage to Phillip Ehiagwina.

The actress revealed that she got married early because she wanted to have a family so it wouldn’t seem that she chose career over family, even though her career is also very important.

“Basically there would never be a particular reason. You know how these things work. It’s like I said, differences. I mean, incompatibility. Not being able to reach certain compromises or finding common ground,” she said.

She also spoke on distance as one of the factors affected her relationship with her husband, stating that being together actually helps in understanding.

“Distance plays a very important role in a relationship, no matter the difference or incompatibility. If you are together a lot, you can find a way to work things out,” she added.

The actress also dwelt on lessons learnt from her crashed marriage and how it has made her stronger stating ; “I try not to regret my actions so I will say it has been an experience which I have learnt a lot from. It’s made me a stronger person, it made me wiser and I think it has actually made me more matured. So I won’t say that I regret anything; I’ll say that I have learnt my lesson.”
