  • Lagos APC: Tinubu insists on Sanwo-Olu for ticket

    •Meeting with Buhari ‘fruitful’

    •How party ’ll pick candidate

    •Panel promises credible election

All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu said last night that his position on the candidates battling for the party’s governorship ticket remains.

Tinubu’s media adviser Tunde Rahman said last night in a statement on Tinubu’s meeting with the President in Abuja:

“Asiwaju Tinubu and Chief Bisi Akande were invited by President Buhari and it turned out to be a good and productive meeting. Asiwaju was quite pleased to have conferred with the President who has always shown himself to be a committed party member and a true democrat.

“Just like the President, he is looking forward to a good and credible primary that is peaceful and free of rancor. As previously stated, Asiwaju plans to vote in this primary and his position regarding the relative merits of the candidates remains unchanged.”

In the race are incumbent Akinwunmi Ambode and former Commissioner Jide Sanwo-Olu. The primary election is today.

Asiwaju said of his choice in a statement on Monday: “I am encouraged by the presence of a candidate in this primary, who has served the state in senior positions in my administration, the Fashola administration and even in the current one. While possessing a wealth of experience and exposure, he is a young man endowed with superlative vision and commitment.

“Most importantly, he understands the importance of the blueprint for development. He esteems it as a reliable and well-conceived vehicle for the future development of the state. He also knows the value of reaching out and working with others in order to maximise development and provide people the best leadership possible. With people like him at the helm, the state will write the proper history for itself.”

In  377 wards across 20 local governments, members of the APC will vote today.

Every card-carrying member of the party is eligible.

There will be no ballot box and ballot paper. Party members will queue behind the posters of their preferred aspirant.

The mode of the primary is “open direct primary”, which involves open and physical counting of members on queue behind the posters of their chosen aspirants.

They will be accredited by 9a.m. Election will take place by 12 noon. Members will show their APC Identification Card. No white slip will be accepted,  Chairman Tunde Balogun said yesterday.

Posters of the two aspirants will be held by their agents. After accreditation, party members will queue behind them.

“They will be counted on the queue and recorded. After that, voting ends. The agents of aspirants will sign. Then, the results will be taken to the local governments, the final collation will be done at the state level,” Balogun told The Nation in an interview.

The chairman urged members to troop out to participate in the exercise.

He said the shadow poll will be very transparent and peaceful across the wards, urging members to maintain decorum as they participate in the exercise.”

Ambode is campaigning on continuity. Sanwo-Olu has promised an all-inclusve government –  if elected.

Chairman of the electoral panel former Cross River State Governor Clemant Ebri attributed logistics challenge to the shift of the poll from Monday till today.

He told Ambode when he visited the Government House in Alausa: “I also like to apologise for the delay; it had to be postponed as a result of logistics in Lagos, Imo and some other states because of the pressure and work load from the secretariat and other developments that have taken place.”

Raising the stakes on the shadow election, Ebri said: “Lagos is more like a decider and like they say, when Lagos sneezes the rest of the country catches cold.

“So, that is why we are very careful about what we are doing and the National Chairman asked me to send his best wishes to you and ask us to come and do the right thing to the satisfaction of all members.

“Moreso, the President of this country stands for transparency and detests corruption and, a situation where no one feels manipulated.

“The process we are laying out is such that will ensure and guarantee transparency and credibility. We have people of integrity in this panel.

Other members of the panel are: Alhaji Ahmed Mahmud Gumel as secretary; Mr Nze Chidi Duru; Chief Clever Egbeji, Sen. Clever Ikisikpo and Ambassador Jerry Ugokwe.

On the integrity of the members, Ebri said: “These are not rookies in politics; they are people who have been tested. You can see senators, former governors, former deputy governor, former member of the House of Representatives; so, this is a star-studded team.

“I can assure you that we have all the experience that you want and you can think about to conduct this exercise. We assure you of our sincerity and transparency and we seek your cooperation in providing a level-playing field.’

Ambode replied:  “I receive this election team as being acceptable and credible to me enough to discharge their civic responsibility to the best of their abilities and to also say that whatever it is that is the outcome of the primaries, your presence has also shown that this will be credible and this will be acceptable to me.”

“So, it is very clear to me, all I seek is credible primaries, transparent primaries and level playing ground that we will all be proud of at the end of the day for the outcome,” the governor said, adding:

“There were issues that we have raised that we are also trying to correct.

“The bottom line is this, we are family, we must not go into the elections divided because this is the very first time that our party is controlling the centre and also the state; that is what I want us to continue.

“The issues that I raised have been put in form of a letter which I will pass to the chairman and I believe the committee will look into it judiciously.

“And also I welcome the stakeholders meeting which will allow you feel the pulse of what is going on in the state.”

The panel’s members attended a stakeholders meeting at the Lagos State APC secretariat in Ogba last night to perfect the planning for the election.

  • Council insists on Auto Billing System

Chairman of Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos Afolabi Sofola has said the Auto Billing System introduced by his administration has come to stay.

He made this known yesterday at the launch of the council’s new area office in Oworonshoki town.

He said the new billing system will help the council capture its revenue for the collective good of the people.

Rather than bribe the public officers, he urged the people to always pay whatever they have into the government’s purse, stressing that whatever amount they use in bribing the officers be a loss on their part, as it will not reflect on their payment.

Sofola said the new Oworo Area Office is part of his government’s effort to bringing governance to the people, adding that it is a mark of the government’s commitment to good working environment.

He promised to fix William Street, the road leading to the Oloworo’s palace.

Speaking at the event, the Oloworo of Oworonshoki, Oba Saliu Oloruntoyin praised the chairman for bringing governance closer to the people.

  • JUSUN insists on sustained strike

    JUSUN insists on sustained strike

THE Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has urged its members to sustain the strike until their demands for financial autonomy are granted by government.

Its National Vice President (Northeast Zone), Mr. Ahmed Bello, who spoke with reporters in Gombe, said this would help the union to uphold the financial autonomy of the judicial system, as declared by the court.

“This judgment was obtained January 2014. All efforts had being put in place to see that this strike does not take place and there is nothing we can do.

“At least we gave the stakeholders all the necessary space for them to see that they implemented what the court has said, but nobody appealed,” said the union leader.

Bello said JUSUN had obtained judgment on the interpretation of Section 83, sub-section 3, as well as on Section 121, sub-section 3, which declared that judiciary must be financially independent.

He stated that the strike was not based on issues of welfare, but on absolute financial autonomy for the system.

Bello added that JUSUN wanted the system to be free from interference to enable the judiciary perform its function fearlessly.

  • I want to rule Africa in 2015, Quadri insists

I want to rule Africa in 2015, Quadri insists

Havingmade an impression in the world in 2014, Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri has insisted that he wants to dominate the game in Africa in this New Year.

The Portugal-based player told SportingLife yesterday that he hopes to start his reign with the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Africa Senior Championships holding from January 23 to 29 in Cairo, Egypt.

“As a matter of fact, the men’s single title being held by Egypt’s El-Sayed Lashin is still eluding me in Africa and winning it will make me fulfilled a little bit just like the way I am targeting the All Africa Games diadem held by Lashin’s compatriot, Omar Assar. This year winning individual titles will make me fully fulfilled in Africa and I know it is possible with hardwork,” Quadri said.

“I never won the African championships individual event in my career and winning it will make me happy in January and I seriously believe it is achievable and God will help me as I am working harder for the war in Cairo,” he added.

To dismiss the threat that may be posed by the host, Egypt in Cairo, the highest ranked African player in the world said: “As a member of Nigerian team, I am looking forward to a more better outing because Egypt has been ruling looking the continent for years now and our men and women’s team are looking forward to stop the Egyptians’ dominance. It is true and I seriously believe that the North Africans dominance is very possible to be stopped in January. I must admit that it is not going to be easy for any team to defeat them due to the players their team has but it’s very possible if our team has the needed support.”

The ITTF World Cup quarterfinalist believes teams like Tunisia, Algeria and Congo Brazzaville are not pushovers as they are also major threats to Nigeria’s ambition.

“We are all ready for the war in Cairo due to the fact that everyone knows what is at stake and we will all fight to retain our lost glory in Africa this time. Our federation has been working harder and this is the right time that we can compensate the great efforts of our federation president and his members.

Just like we put smile on his face at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland, we are all working harder as a team to make him the happiest man in January in Cairo and may God help us more than our expectation,” he promised.

For 2015, Quadri hopes to feature in more Pro Tours with the aim of playing in the World Tour finals this year.

On how he hopes to prepare for the tournament in Cairo, he said: “I think I will be well prepared for the tournament after the ITTF Star Award in Dubai. I am going straight to Porto to join my teammates and practice with them for two weeks just like I did before the ITTF World Cup.”

  • Falcons coach insists AWC draw not easy

Falcons coach insists AWC draw not easy

Nigeria women’s coach, Edwin Okon, has maintained that the 2014 African Women’s Championship (AWC) draw that pits his team against hosts Namibia and Zambia will not be as easy as it looks.

According to the draws which took place in Windhoek on Saturday, Nigeria were drawn in Group A with Namibia, Zambia and Cote d’ Ivoire, while Group B has South Africa, Cameroon, Ghana and Algeria.

Okon said the group on paper looks easy for the Falcons, but was also quick to warn that the Ivorians, who eliminated 2012 champions Equatorial Guinea and Namibia should not be treated lightly.

“All the eight teams that qualified for the competition are good and determined to win the AWC title and that is why we won’t underrate any team. There are no push overs in women’s football any longer in Africa,” Okon said.

“With Cote d’Ivoire sending defending champions Equatorial Guinea out and a Namibian side that will be well motivated by the home fans in our group, it will be foolhardy for the Super Falcons to be complacent.

“They might look at Group B and say that it is the group of death, but the reality is that Group A that has the hosts and a team that beat the cup holders cannot be written off. It is not going to be easy but we won’t disappoint Nigerians.”

He assured that the Falcons would do everything possible to qualify from the group and try to win back the trophy they lost in 2012 to Equatorial Guinea.

Okon also revealed that he has requested for three international warm-ups for the Falcons ahead of the competition and plans for them to open training camp in August.

The 2014 AWC will be staged from October 11 to 25 in Namibia.

The winners,runners-up and third-place winners will represent Africa at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada next year.

  • I believe in what I wrote to Jonathan, Obasanjo insists

I believe in what I wrote to Jonathan, Obasanjo insists

MORE fact emerged yesterday on the visit of All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders to former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday.

Obasanjo, who wrote a critical letter to President Goodluck Jonathan, was said to have insisted that he stood by the issues he raised in his letter.

He said he wrote the letter in the larger interest of the survival of Nigeria and its democracy, contrary to the notion that he was self-seeking, The Nation learnt.

The letter contained many allegations, including that Jonathan was training snipers. The former President, according to sources, said he was ready to prove the allegations.

Obasanjo reportedly opened up to some top leaders of the APC at a closed-door session in Abeokuta.

It was gathered that although the ex-President had warmly received all members of the entourage, he bared his mind to select few on the state of the nation.

A source, who spoke in confidence, said: “After the initial obeisance, banters, and the purpose of the APC mission, the ex-President had audience with a group of six or seven leaders.

“He told the them that he believed in what he wrote and he had no regrets for doing so. He said he was not ‘self-seeking’ in writing President Jonathan.

“The ex-President also told the team that ‘if it is necessary, I will provide evidence on some of the issues. I have my facts.’

Another source said the ex-President’s body language was a “bit stronger on his point on snipers but he did not go into details”.

Responding to a question, the source added: “Obasanjo restated his faith in a united and indivisible Nigeria. He also pleaded with APC leaders to remain committed to one Nigeria, irrespective of the political situation in the country.”

The source quoted Obasanjo as saying: “I did not write the letter to curry favour or seek undue attention but at my age, I should talk when things are going wrong. I am not on a self-seeking mission.”

The source said Obasanjo declared that he would not leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

On the mission of APC leaders, a third source said a National Leader of APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu captured it in his interview with reporters that they were not out to woo Obasanjo.

“In fact, the APC leaders told Obasanjo that having consulted with past leaders on the state of the nation; they also owed him a duty to brief him on why they are after a change of leadership in 2015.”

  • Obi insists on Anambra north for governor

Obi insists on Anambra north for governor

Anambra North must produce the next governor, Governor Peter Obi insisted yesterday.

Obi also denied endorsing any candidate for the post in his party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

In a statement on his behalf by Commissioner for Information and Culture Joe-Martins Uzodike, Obi criticised those who accused him of playing god on the issue of his successor describing their claim as “laughable” and the antics of those who by their conduct obviously do not believe in god.

According to him, Obi was playing god simply because he said that since Anambra North, having not provided a governor in 22 years, should be, in the spirit of equity and fair play be allowed to produce one.

He said: “Rather than play fair somebody said the governor was playing god, is it Okija Shrine that he should play”, the Commissioner asked.

“All over the country, states are going for fairness and equity in distribution of political posts. Enugu, Edo, Ebonyi, Abia, among others are all saying that governorship should move to a particular zone for the sake of equity. Even in Abia, they have what they call charter of equity, where it is clearly spelt out.

Obi asked all the contenders for governor to stop dropping his name but to prepare for the election adequately.

Obi described as “mischievous” those associating him with endorsing a candidate, asking Anambra North to produce their best candidates in APGA.

“Today, while a number of them have come out, with competitive advantages to rival the best of other zones. We have the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Oseloka Obaze, an international Civil Servant; we have Dr. Chike Obidigbo, a renowned industrialist; we have Mr. Tony Nnaecheta, who was an ex MD of a Bank; we have Chief Willie Obiano, who was an Executive Director in a Bank, among others. With this array of people from the Zone, nobody can say the zone lacks quality people,” the Commissioner said.

  • Court insists Fed Govt must pay Odi judgment sum

Court insists Fed Govt must pay Odi judgment sum

A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State has insisted that the N37.6 billion compensation must be paid to Odi people by the Federal Government for the November 20, 1999 massacre.

Justice Lambo Akambi described the Federal Government’s application for stay of execution as frivolous and lacking merit.

The judge stated that the Federal Government’s application was not in good faith, since it had the resources and assets, which exceeded the N37.6billion the court awarded as compensation to Odi people.

The Federal Government’s counsel, Michael Nomeh, who stood in for Ade Okeaya-Inneh (SAN), urged the judge to grant the application, pending the determination of the appeal.

Nomeh said the Federal Government feared that if the N37.6 billion was released to Odi community, it would be difficult to recover the fund, if the appeal was successful.

The counsel to Odi people, Lawal Rabana (SAN), in company of Lucius Nwosu (SAN) and Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), pleaded with Justice Akambi to disregard the Federal Government’s application.

Rabana said the Odi people were entitled to the compensation, since the Federal Government would not be able to bring back to life all the innocent persons killed.

The counsel added: “The Federal Government cannot go bankrupt or collapse, if the money is released to Odi community.

“If the appeal succeeds, the Federal Government can get the money back.

“Odi people are not foreigners, who will abscond. Odi will continue to remain an integral part of Nigeria forever.”
