Iwuanyanwu hails IBB, Soyinka for FRSC

Business man and founder, Iwuanyanwu National Ambulance Scheme Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu has hailed former President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida for establishing the Federal Road Safety Corps.

Iwuanyanwu also hailed Prof. Wole Soyinka for birthing the FRSC idea in Nigeria 30 years ago.

He made the commendation in Abuja, while addressing students at the maiden edition of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC Inter Secondary School debate competition organized in collaboration with Iwuanyanwu Scheme.

The event featured an intellectual drill with the participation of eight schools within the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

The students were drilled on the basic knowledge of safety. The drill was part of the strategies to further reduce road traffic crash among school children in 2018.

He said: “FRSC is blazing a new trail in grapping some of the academic problems confronting Nigeria as a nation. Problem of road traffic crash can only be solved when the youth are given the right education, orientation right from the cradle. We strongly recommend the stride and the initiatives of catching them young of FRSC to other institutions of government to emulate.

“On this special occasion, I will like to commended former military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida for establishing the Federal Road Safety Corps and commended the ingenuity of Professor Wole Soyinka who birthed the FRSC idea in Nigeria. I will also like to express delight over the literary performance of the students and finally hail FRSC Corps Marshall, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi for his innovations in championing the cause of road safety through public education campaign in the last 30 years of its existence.”

Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem who spoke on behalf of the Corps asked students to internalize safety measures.

He noted that the programme was designed to ensure that the safety education was made a priority in schools warning that the Corps would not tolerate the death of students through road mishaps again.

“FRSC has come to a point where it can no longer tolerate the death of school children on our roads as a result of road traffic crashes”, he said.

An orphan, Master Isiting Edet Samuel Eta has been awarded a scholarship from secondary school to the university level by the Iwuanyanwu Foundation.

Eta is presently an SS3 student from Government Secondary School, Wuye, Abuja.

  • Stop opening new varsities, Iwuanyanwu advises Fed Govt

Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing  Council, University of Calabar Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu has advised the Federal Government to stop establishing more universities and enhance the standard of existing ones.

Iwuanyanwu gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Atta Ikeduru, Imo,yesterday.

He said instead of frequent approval of new universities, government should concentrate on improving standards in the existing ones to produce quality graduates.

Iwuanyanwu said the standard of education in Nigerian universities had dropped when compared with what obtained more than 40 years ago.

“During our days in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, before the outbreak of the civil war, Nigerian universities were rated among the top universities in the world but the situation today is something else. Government must do something to change the university system, ‘’ he said.

Iwuanyanwu said the quality of education was central to the advancement of the nation, adding that emphasis must be placed on specialisation by universities for expected gains in the education sector.

The elder statesman expressed support for the restructuring of the country with a view to tackling corruption, repositioning the local government administration and power sector.

“I must commend President Muhammadu Buhari for his courage in embarking on anti-corruption fight. Buhari embarked on War Against Indiscipline as Head of State and now fighting corruption as a civilian president.

“All I want Buhari to do is to extend the anti-corruption fight to all sectors not at the level of leaders alone because a policeman collecting N50 from drivers on the road is involved in corruption. The one giving gift to somebody in office is also involved,” he said.

The pro-chancellor said that there must be ethical revolution in order to eliminate corruption for Nigeria to get things right.

On the lingering petrol scarcity, Iwuanyanwu advised the Federal Government to construct refineries in all the 36 states as a way of ending the recurrent challenges associated with short supply of petroleum products.

  • Igbo never mandated anyone to talk about secession – Iwuanyanwu

Igbo never mandated anyone to talk about secession – Iwuanyanwu

Prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, declared yesterday that the Igbo never mandated any one to talk about breaking away from the country.

He expressed worry over agitations by some groups for the balkanization of the country although he has nothing against restructuring which, according to him, is appropriate to address the numerous challenges confronting the country.

Iwuayanwu who spoke in an interview said restructuring does not amount to division of the nation, adding ”let us forget about the talk of secession by some young people.”

Continuing, he said: ”I am an Igbo man and a leader. I was the Chairman of Planning and Strategy of Ohaneze Ndigbo, so when you talk of any decision on the Igbo, it must have my consent.

”Igbo have never mandated anybody to go and talk about secession. We have heard that some youths reversed the call for the exit of the Igbo form the north.

“I am happy that Nigerian leaders as well as the governors are coming up to say that Igbo are safe in their places.”

Iwuanyanwu assured Igbo of their safety in every part of the country.

”Many Igbo in the north have been coming to me asking me of what to do; I want to assure them that nobody is going to hurt them.

”We all stand for one Nigeria and in future if anybody makes a statement, nobody should generalise and say it is Igbo,” he said.

According to him, there are good and terrible people amongst the Igbo as it is in other tribes.

”People should stop generalizing individual’s comment as if it were the general Igbo who made the comment.

”I am happy that the President (Muhammadu Buhari) has said that anyone who made threatening comments would be disciplined and he has said he would put security measures to protect them.

    ”Therefore, Igbo shouldn’t go anywhere.

”I just want everyone to accept this restructuring and by the way, this restructuring issue is not a complicated one.

”We have had two constitutional conferences during Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and Dr Goodluck Jonathan civilian governments. We don’t even need to have a sovereign national conference.

  • Why FG should concede SGF slot to  South East—Ezeife, Iwuanyanwu, others

Why FG should concede SGF slot to  South East—Ezeife, Iwuanyanwu, others

The South East is unrelenting in its quest for the Office of Secretary to the Federal Government, following the suspension of the incumbent, David Babachir Lawal.

There are speculations that Lawal may not return and that the presidency is already searching for a replacement.

Political leaders from the South East have launched a campaign for President Muhammadu Buhari to give the position to the zone, citing the need to reverse the view that the administration is marginalizing the zone.

Frontline Igbo leader and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, believes the South East has got nothing tangible so far from the Buhari government and that it would expect that if there is such a vacancy, the Federal Government  will reserve  it for  the region.

”If you look at the whole thing that they are doing, it appears as if people don’t exist in the South East,” he told The Nation.

“We have people who are qualified to hold this position in the APC. They should look at our people in the APC and appoint one of them.”

A former governor of Anambra State, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife, is also of the view that the position should naturally be conceded to the South East.

His words: “Nigeria has six principal protocol offices.  The North West has the President; the South West has the Vice-President; the Senate President is from the North Central; so are other zones except the South East.

“Our constitution prescribes federal character, but the South East zone is conspicuously absent, blatantly removed from these positions. The position should automatically come to the South East.”  He added: “Usually, anyone who should be the SGF is effectively someone who knows where the switches in government are, so that if anybody switches on, he switches off.

“That was why, in the past, it was only retired permanent secretaries that qualified to be made SGF. Somebody who has worked as a governor is also qualified because he has worked with so many permanent secretaries.”

While supporting the call that the SGF position to go to the South East, the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural group,Nnia Nwodo, said:  ”I think we should go beyond the stage of determining who should occupy an office on the basis of  zone to competence. The entire federal appointments have violated the federal character and shortchanged the South East and shortchanged the policy of the APC to zone the SGF position to the South East.

“They ate their own words. We are going to court to challenge the president for non-compliance with the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“A lot more has been done in denying the South East their due at the centre. I hope the president will use this opportunity to correct a lot of things. But far more important is that he should look for somebody competent from the South East. We want quality people to man important positions.”

But he said Ohanaeze will not lobby the presidency for the position to come to the zone, saying: “I am not interested in lobbying anybody to recognize the zone. The president is supposed to be the father of the whole country. He has sworn to the constitution and I expect him to respect his oath of office.”

The call also got the support of First Republic Minister and nationalist, Mbazulike Amaechi, who ,in a telephone interview , said: “If the president now believes that there should be fairness and equity and justice and that Nigeria should be a true federation, he should give the post of the SGF to the South East.

“You put somebody in Foreign Affairs and another in Science and Technology. To me, those are insignificant positions.

“It shows that he doesn’t want the Igbo. If he changes his mind now, it will douse tension in the country. He will regain the confidence of the Igbo people if he does this.

“Ogbonaya Onu had been a chairman of a political party that sponsored President Buhari twice. He has been so faithful a man. He is a quiet and principled Igbo man. He is not like these other ones that jump from one party to the other. If he (Buhari) actually wants somebody who will be loyal to him, he has him (Onu) there in Abuja.”

On his part, the national chairman of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Chief Chekwas Okorie, said the call for the replacement of the suspended SGF is misplaced and premature because he has not been indicted.

Even if the seat becomes vacant, Okorie said, whoever occupies the position lies within the purview of the president.

He said: ”He knows who he wants. Even though it is provided for in the law of the land, it is not one of those offices that is subjected to federal character.  It is the president’s prerogative as far as I know.

“ If the president gives it to the South East, I will definitely be happy.

“I am not keen on what position my people occupy, but what the government does for my people.  Our people occupied positions in the past and there was nothing to show for it.”

Iwuanyanwu: Buhari not responsible for economic woes

A front  line Igbo leader and a Board of Trustees’ (BoT) member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, at the weekend, described those criticising President Muhammadu Buhari as naive and unpatriotic.

He said the economic challenges called for a collective action, instead of endless blame game and buck passing.

Iwuanyanwu, who spoke with reporters in Owerri, noted that the Buhari administration cannot be held responsible for the hardship, which is a consequence of falling oil prices and massive corruption.

The PDP chieftain said: “I don’t blame Buhari for the economic problems we are facing, and this is not time for trading words.  It is a time to rally round the President with ideas that will help get the country out of the economic challenges .

“When a country is going through this kind of challenge,  the right attitude should not be to lose hope,  the right attitude should be to rise up to stay together and confront the challenges.

“I think the President has done well in fighting corruption because it is one of the major reasons we are where we are today and I believe the country will soon overcome the challenges “.

Iwuanyanwu, however, advised the President to introduce competent hands to devise policies to save the economy from collapse.

He said:  “In as much as I don’t blame Buhari,  I think it is time he takes a second look at his government. And he has to do this as a matter of urgency to ensure the economy doesn’t slide into depression.

“For instance, during President Olusegun Obasanjo tenure,  there was problem, and he invited Okonjo Iweala, who was then at the World Bank. She came and helped to fix the economy, and the country bounced back. The finance department needs serious overhaul.  The President should put a strong economic team together and allow it to manage the economy, while the President will continue with his fight against corruption.

“Another economic policy of the administration that I don’t support,  which I think should be  suspended, is the Treasury Single Account (TSA). This policy has done more harm to the economy than good.

  • Herdsmen attacks: Okogie, Iwuanyanwu, MASSOB spit fire

Herdsmen attacks: Okogie, Iwuanyanwu, MASSOB spit fire

Tension remained high across the land yesterday in the aftermath of recurring murder of innocent citizens by suspected herdsmen, particularly Monday’s invasion of Nimbo in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State.

At least 20 people were killed during the invasion.

Although the army has deployed troops in Enugu and Kogi states in response to the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari that the culprits be fished out and prosecuted accordingly, many Nigerians said yesterday that the federal government was tardy in its handling of the menace.

Retired Catholic Archbishop of Lagos State, Anthony Cardinal Okogie, asked President Buhari to arrest the situation before it gets out of hand whileIgbo leader and publisher of Champion newspaper, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, called the Nimbo attack a humiliation of the Igbo.

“The greatest humiliation you can give to an Igbo man is to attack him in his home. That is come to his home, kill his wife, his children and destroy his house,” Iwuanyanwu said.

Goddy Uwazurike, president of Aka Ikenga, an Igbo think-tank organization, deplored what he termed “Federal Government’s nonchalant attitude to the issue.”

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohaneze, has summoned an emergency meeting for tomorrow in Enugu to discuss the matter.

Okogie, speaking on the phone yesterday, said: “President Buhari should do something fast about it. If he fails to act fast, it may lead to a situation where the people will be forced to use everything they have to defend themselves.

“Do you expect the people of Enugu to fold their hands after the attack and wait for another attack? When this kind of thing begins to happen, you risk having civil war in the country.

“As a Fulani man, Buhari should talk to his people. The sheep understand the voice of the shepherd. It is important to know where the herdsmen are getting sophisticated weapons from.

“If you check it very well, you will find that they are now everywhere. Even in some places where there is no single grass, you still find them.

“This is not the kind of change we voted for. How long would we continue to have this kind of lawlessness in our hands?

The President of Aka Ikenga, Goddy Uwazurike, said: “The Federal Government’s nonchalant attitude to the issue aggravated it. Its silence spoke volume. It shows that something is wrong.

“I am surprised that the Department of State Security (DSS) is not taking proactive action. The Southeast is waiting for the Federal Government to do something about it.

“If they fail, we would have to defend ourselves. A man who has enemies around his house does not go to bed with his two eyes closed.”

Iwuanyanwu, in his reaction to the mayhem, said: “We are worried that this matter is going to create serious trouble in this country. And I want to tell you today that the greatest challenge to the peace and unity of this country is the activities of the herdsmen.”

He was shocked that no single arrest had been made in respect of the Nimbo attack.

“I am astonished how somebody can carry his cattle to a person’s farm and destroy his crops; not only that they have come to a point where they rape women—married women, old women.

“The incident in Enugu was pathetic. It was an invasion.

“No one has given the accurate number of persons that were killed, and I learnt that the perpetrators have all escaped.

“What bothers me is that for so many years, nobody has heard about this.

“Some years ago, one could hear incidents of cattle straying into a farm and maybe damaging some crops and this could be settled amicably. But today, the new group that come are armed with automatic weapons and they kill people with impunity.

“In this country, no one has the authority to carry automatic weapons but these people parade the country with such weapons.

“I am aware that the President has directed the security agencies to fish out these people. But it has gotten to a point where farmers in Igbo land and other parts of the country are afraid to go to the farm because there is no way you can get enough policemen to garrison every farmland against these herdsmen.

“The implication is that food shortage may hit the country.

“Another thing is that the possibility of collaboration between this group and Boko Haram cannot be ruled out and so the victims of the cattle rearers’ attack should be treated with similar attention like the victims of Boko Haram.

“So whatever support the government is given in the Northeast, they should give in the Southeast.

“All of us must raise our voice against this evil because it could be worse that Boko Haram.”

The renowned politician however appealed to Igbo youths not to take reprisal action, adding that such action will jeopardise the lives of the Igbo living in other parts of the country.

Bemoaning the predicament of Agatu people of Benue State, Comrade Aluh Moses Odeh, national leader All Middle Belt Forum, (AMBYF), condemned any attempt by security and government officials to present the attackers as foreigners, saying: “Our people have always been victims of these herdsmen and we would not take it anymore.

“We say no to a situation where some people will continue to destroy our farmlands and means of survival with impunity. If the government cannot defend us, we would defend ourselves.

“The argument that the perpetrators are foreigners is false. They are Fulani herdsmen who move their cows about. It is even an indictment on our security operatives for anybody to use that as a defence. It shows that our security operatives are not alive to their responsibilities.

“But the truth is that those guys are not foreigners and neither are they Boko Haram members.

“It is an insult on the sensibility of our people for government officials to be using all these as excuses for their shortcomings.

“We are supposed to be engaging in serious farming now but that is not possible. This would certainly have serious effect on availability of food for our people very soon.”

Mazi Uchenna Madu, a factional leader of Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) said: “Even some Igbo groups are busy counting  the casualties and  how the Federal Government and security agents abandoned our people.

“That era has gone, and until Ndigbo get actively involved in  protecting and defending Igbo people, interest and future, Hausa/Fulani herdsmen will continue to harass, intimidate, invade and cause more pogroms against our people. Ndigbo should hold their governors responsible for any invasion of our land.”

Chief Ladi Williams, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), told the Federal Government to adopt a hard line decision on the situation.

He said: “The government has to take a tough position on the development because it has the potential of destabilising the country. The people are seeing them not as miscreants but as a group that has stepped into the shoes of Boko Haram and it is only the Federal Government that can handle the situation before it threatens the unity of the country.

“The courts are not appropriate for this purpose. Court is time wasting. The president should summon the various service chiefs and nip the problem in the bud.

The youth wing of the Arewa Consultative Forum also condemned the activities of the herdsmen.

In a telephone chat with The Nation, the president of the group, Comrade Shetima Yerima said:: “We are opposed to it. We condemn it in all totality because we are not in a banana republic. Whatever is their grouse should be made public.”

  • Iwuanyanwu wants Igbo to drop presidential ambition till 2027

FRONTLINE politician and renowned Igbo leader, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanu, yesterday appealed to Ndigbo to suspend their presidential ambition till 2027, when, according to him, the south-south and the north may have completed their turn of eight years each. Iwuanyanwu, who is also a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustee (BoT), noted that any attempt to prevent the south-south geo-political zone from completing its remaining four-year-term may be injurious to the unity of the country, adding that Ndigbo had sacrificed a lot to keep Nigeria as one and can’t afford to jeopardize the nation’s unity.

Speaking with journalists in Owerri, the Imo State capital, Iwuanyanwu stressed that every patriotic Nigerian should be more concerned with the unity, progress and peace of the country, adding that, if the elections in 2015 are not properly handled, “situations could deteriorate to a point that it may be difficult to control”.

According to him, “I therefore strongly suggest that since the south-south region has four years out of the constitutional eight years, the south-south should be allowed to complete eight years. I once more appeal to my people of the south-east who are legitimately and rightly demanding for the presidency of Nigeria to subjugate this ambition to the unity, peace and stability of Nigeria by supporting the southsouth.

“After the south-south has completed its tenure of eight years, the presidency will naturally go to the north. In effect, in four years time, all Nigerians will support the presidency going to the north. After eight years in the north, the presidency will come back to the south. When it comes to the south, it will automatically be the turn of the southeast since the south-west and the south-south have taken their turn.

“This is a very trying period for our country and I appeal to all leaders to subjugate their individual or group interest for national interest. I must confess I have on my own held private discussions with some leaders from various parts of the country, making this proposition and all those I discussed with were in support of this my opinion.”

Iwuanyanwu decries low involvement of academics in policy making

The Pro-Chancellor/Chairman, Governing Council of the University of Calabar, Dr Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, has said the marginalisation of the academia in policy making is responsible for  the problems facing Nigeria.

Speaking at the inauguration of the digital library at the Graduate School Complex of the institution, the business mogul said tertiary institutions have not been well equipped to engage in cutting-edge research that would deal with societal challenges.

“America is a great country because when they have problems, they push it to the universities. Academics are very important in all areas of live,” he said.

He said the e-library would not only benefit UNICAL alone but the entire country.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof James Epoke, lauded the Graduate School for the new facility.  He said his support for the project stemmed from its being in line with the strategic vision of the university anchored on attainment and maintenance of the highest form of excellence in teaching, research and community service.

With the development, he said graduate students and the faculty can now have real time access to e-books and journals via the intranet and internet, at all times from any location.

He urged that the project be sustained and improved even beyond the tenure of the Dean of the Graduate School.

Dean of the Graduate School, Prof Francis Bisong, said besides the library, they were also inaugurating the Turnitin, an anti-plagiarism web-based software solution.

Bisong said their mission was to prepare the nation, next generation of professional, scholarly and educated leaders imbued with capacity for highly rated policy relevant research, independent critical thinking, academic rigour and intellectual honesty.

Resources of the digital library, he said, include 5,756 titles consisting 4,250 books; 1,397 journals; 10 magazines and 99 videos/audio resources covering 329 subject areas grouped into 40 major areas with the capacity of being expanded to millions of titles in variable disciplines.

Others features are over 500 CDS of books and learning materials supplied by the university library to be digitised into the e-library and subscription to several world class digital libraries to be built through hyperlink into the Graduate School digital library, among others.

    Iwuanyawu finds love again

    … Marries 26-old girl

Two years after the death of his wife, one of Nigeria’s billionaires and publisher of the Champions Newspapers, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyawu,  has  found love again in the heart of 26- year- old   Frances Chinonyerem Enwerem.

The white wedding which took place last weekend was preceded by a traditional wedding on September 14 in Owerri, Imo State.

Contrary to the views of many that the girl might just be after Iwuanyawu’s wealth, sources claimed that Chinonyerem is also from a wealthy home and her decision to get hooked to the businessman-cum politician was borne out of genuine love.

Sources also said  the 72- year -old business mogul is madly in love with his new heartthrob.
