    Jegede promises to create jobs

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Ondo State, Eyitayo Jegede (SAN ), has promised to create jobs for youths. He said his economic blue print will salvage the state.

Jegede promised to attract investors to Ondo State to boost its economy.

Fielding questions from reporters in Akure, the state capital, the legal luminary said the challenges of the time demanded great leadership.

The former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice said the legacies of previous governments will be protected, adding that he will use the experience he had acquired in government over the years to develop the state.

The PDP candidate said he had a clear idea of what he wanted to do as governor.

Jegede added: “There is a very clear idea of what I want to do. I have a clear policy of what i want  to do, especially in the area job creation and the  economy”

The flag bearer urged the women to support his bid, promising not to fail them.

Urging them to be ready to take up responsibilities, he said women would not be denied the opportunity  of engagement on account of gender.

Jegede said women would be empowered under his government, adding that an additional micro credit scheme will be created to give them opportunities to own businesses.

He said his government will take another look at the protective laws for the womenfolk as they affect inheritance, personal property and commerce.

    • Ibrahim to INEC: I’m candidate

The Peoples Democratic Party in Ondo State has petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari, the National Judicial Council (NJC), and the Attorney -General of the Federation over alleged unethical conduct and criminal conspiracy to subvert justice in a suit on the party’s governorship candidate.

In separate petitions against Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court Abuja and others, the party alleged unethical conduct in the handling of the suit by Prince Biyi Poroye and eight others against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and PDP.

In the petition signed by Ondo PDP Chairman Clement Faboyede, the party said it was taken aback when, on October 14, Justice Abang granted an order directing INEC to substitute the name of Mr Eyitayo Jegede with Jimoh Ibrahim as PDP’s candidate.

The party said the judgment was based on a September 29 motion on notice for the enforcement of an earlier ruling of June 29 in which the applicants sought an order requiring PDP to reject any other nomination forms submitted by any persons apart from Ibrahim.

“When the application which gave rise to the said order of 14th October 2016 was brought , heard and granted, the judge and the counsel were aware that Eyitayo Jegede’s name had been forwarded to the INEC by the PDP as its candidate,” the petitioner said.

It added that Jegede was allegedly not afforded an opportunity to be heard.

But businessman Jimoh Ibrahim slammed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for not immediately recognising him as the candidate.

Relying on the October 14 judgment of a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, Ibrahim said he remained the authentic candidate of the party in the election.

The suit was jointly filed by the Executive committees of the PDP in Ondo, Osun and Oyo states, with INEC and the PDP as defendants.

Extract from the Justice Okon Abang’s judgment stated: “That INEC shall accept and process for the purpose of its functions and activities in organisation and conduct of Ondo State governorship election only the nomination of Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim who emerged from primary election conducted by the 1st and 2nd judgment creditors/applicants on 29th August, 2016 as the candidate of the PDP in the said Ondo state governorship election slated for November 2016”.

However, INEC had said that it would await the outcome of an appeal against the judgement, expected to be delivered on October 27. The appeal was filed by the Makarfi camp.

But Ibrahim said yesterday that it was out of place for INEC to take such a position.

According to him, the said appeal referred to by INEC was filed by an individual who was not party to the original suit in the first place. He added that there was no appeal against the judgment, insisting that the individual seeking leave to appeal the judgment was an “outsider”.

Ibrahim called for the removal of the Ondo State Resident  Electoral Commissioner (REC) for alleged partisanship.

  • Ijaw leaders reject Jegede’s running mate

A mass defection of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) followers in Ese-Odo Local Government is imminent as political leaders from the Ijaw speaking area have rejected the choice of John Ola Mafo as deputy governorship candidate.

A PDP leader from the local government, Sunday Tundigha, in a statement yesterday on behalf of the aggrieved Ese-Odo PDP Leaders’ Forum, faulted Mafo’s emergence.

‘’Our local government is the only Ijaw speaking local government and delivered votes for the PDP in the last presidential and National Assembly elections.

‘’We were, however, surprised that the party leadership of the party decided to turn logic on its head by giving the deputy governorship slot to a local government without any voting value for the PDP.

‘’This is more so that the Alliance for Democracy candidate, Olusola Oke, is from the same local government. This defies logic and every known political justice.

‘’We are, therefore, giving Governor Olusegun Mimiko and leadership of the PDP 48 hours from now, to withdraw Mafo and replace him with an indigene of Ese-Odo.

“Anything short of this will result in mass defection from the party. It is sad that an individual from Ese-Odo could sell out this golden opportunity for our people just because of his future political ambitions. We will resist this selfish and short-sighted political calculation.”

According to him, aggrieved leaders of the PDP have resolved to work for the success of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Rotimi Akeredolu.

‘’Between now and the expiration of the ultimatum, we have put all our supporters on notice to mobilise for Akeredolu. This is because his running mate, Agboola Ajayi, the ambassadorial nominee, Sola Iji as well as the senior Technical adviser to the minister of state for Agriculture, Donald Ojogo, are distinguished sons of our local government,’’ he said in the statement.

One of the deputy governorship hopefuls Pere Ganfo also warned that the PDP might face dire electoral consequences for the decision it took against Ese-Odo.

‘’Since Mafo’s announcement, I have received several complaints from our people who feel short changed, used and dumped. They are unhappy because the party did not deem it needful to consider our electoral value to the PDP. It means we are not needed in the party.”

  • I’m authentic PDP candidate, says Jegede

I’m authentic PDP candidate, says Jegede

Following the Abuja Federal High Court ruling that went in favour of the candidate of the Senator Ali Modu-Sheriff-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim,   the flag bearer of the party in the November 26 governorship election in Ondo State, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede, at a fund-raising event in Lagos, has insisted that he remains the candidate because he was not a party to the suit.

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), has allayed fears that he is at risk of losing the ticket, following the recent court judgment. He said that he was not a party to the Abuja Federal High Court suit that favoured the candidate of the Modu Sheriff-led faction, Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim.

Jegede, who spoke at a fund-raising event in Lagos tagged, ‘An Evening with Eyitayo Jegede’, said he discovered after studying the case that it was about the 2019 general elections and not about his mandate as the flag bearer.

He said: “I want to again reassure you that I am the candidate of the PDP in Ondo State; I am not a party to any suit; I have not been sued as the PDP candidate and I have not sued anybody. Our party, the PDP, which is a defendant in the case filed by persons that were not governorship aspirants or contestants, has filed an appeal at a higher court and I believe that justice will take its course.”

The PDP flag bearer said that Ondo State has always been noted for peace and tranquility and that there is no need for anyone to fret over any suit aimed at causing disaffection.

The candidate, who was visibly moved by the array of eminent indigenes and other Nigerians that came to support his aspiration, said he would consolidate on the achievements of Governor Olusegun Mimiko.

He said: “Previous administrations have done their best to develop the state, but I am promising you tonight that we will do even more.” For instance, he said the shuttle service for pupils and students in the state is a novelty that should never be abandoned, because parents no longer get worried about the need to pay for their children’s transportation while attending school.

Jegede added: “Again, the delivery of free health delivery system for pregnant women that has led to a drastic reduction in maternal deaths also has to be continued. For instance, between 18 and 24 deliveries take place every day under the scheme, at no cost and regardless of whether you are an indigene of Ondo State or not.”

He said if voted as governor, he would focus, on not only infrastructural development, but also on the establishment of big-time industries that will provide sustainable jobs for the teaming population of the unemployed. The PDP candidate said he has designed an economic blueprint for reviving moribund industries and establishing of a power plant to keep the industries going.

The candidate promised to make the cocoa business a worthwhile venture, adding that, in a season, the state produces between 78 and 84 tonnes of cocoa, which is marketed both locally and internationally.

The chairman of the occasion, Prince Dapo Adelegan, said Jegede is dependable and purposeful, adding that as a technocrat, he would swing into action immediately he is sworn in.

Adelegan, who is the President of Nigerian/British Chambers of Commerce and Industries, added: “There is a global recession now that has also affected the Nigerian economy adversely. What we need in Ondo State is a technocrat as governor, not necessarily a politician; someone who would put the state on the path of economic progress.”

Governor Mimiko was represented by the Commissioner for Finance, Chief Yele Ogundipe.

At another gathering in Akure, the Ondo State capital, Jegede promised to institute a comprehensive insurance policy for farmers at all levels in the state, if elected.

The legal practitioner, who spoke about his plans to boost the economy of the state said his government would do everything within its means to make farming an enviable profession, both for practicing farmers and youths that are prepared to embrace the profession with the ultimate aim of becoming employers of labour.

Jegede, who is the former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, said farmers would experience the best of times under his administration, adding they would be insured against any eventuality, including attack by herdsmen. The insurance scheme, he added, would also cover fish farmers against flood.

The PDP candidate said he would empower cocoa farmers to enhance the production of premium cocoa for export.

His words: “Because of my priority for the economy in general and farming in particular, I will institute a scheme where our farmers will be insured against any eventuality, including herdsmen attack. The businesses of our farmers, including fish farmers, will be insured, so that when they suffer any loss, there will be compensation for them.”

Emphasising that farming will be giving a special place in his government; Jegede said state farms would be created where farmers would be given lands to function, aside the running of their private farms.

He added: “There will be state farms in all the senatorial districts where farmers would have the opportunity to earn more and employ people as well. They will also get free seedling.

“We want to make our people self-reliant as much as we can and we are determined to compliment what the present government is doing in that direction and bring more innovations that will make farming a preferred profession in the state

“The present government has done well in this regard, especially as it affects young farmers who have practically become self-reliant through the various agro business centres in Ore, Auga and Isuada among others.”

He promised to empower farmers to leverage on their ability to produce cocoa and train them and as well on how to produce premium cocoa that will add value to their earning.

Jegede also assured that his administration would continue to support the Mother and Child Hospital in Akure and the Mega Schools project, saying they are some of the people-oriented programmes of the Mimiko administration.

The PDP flag bearer said he will ensure that the Mother and Child Hospital is built in three senatorial districts, in line with the focus of the government. He said schools that are yet to meet the standard of the Mimiko-led administration’s millennium-compliant Mega Schools will be upgraded to meet that standard.

Jegede said the experience he has acquired as part of the incumbent administration in the last seven years would assist him to make impact.

According to the former Commissioner, his position as an integral part of the Mimiko administration in the last seven years has given him an insight into what could be done to further raise the bar of governance.

He said  the challenges of the time demanded that the best hand is engaged to address them, adding that he will rely on his  understanding of the state and its people, as well as his experience to develop the state.

Jegede emphasized that the legacies of previous governments will be protected and that he will use the experience he acquired in government to pilot well the affairs of the state, even as he volunteered that he has perfected a blueprint for job creation and to grow the state’s economy to the desired position.

He added: “There is a very clear idea of what I want to do; I have a clear policy of what I want to do, especially in the area of job creation and the economy.”

    • Plan town hall meeting.

A group, the Ondo Professionals Coalition, has endorsed Mr. Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) governorship flagbearer.

The Coalition said Jegede was the best option for the people.

In a communique at its meeting in Akure, the state capital, signed by Mr. Kunle Adedipe and Jide Atandeyi, the group said Jegede “has demonstrated the calmness, integrity and administrative acumen of a true professional. This we believe our dear state desperately need at this time,” it added.

It added: “Having painstakingly assessed the candidates of the key political parties in the state, the meeting resolved that Mr. Eyitayo Jegede’s experience at governance will be an asset at this time.”

“Mr. Eyiyayo Jegede’s comments and actions over the years have shown him to be one who recognised the roles of professionals in national development and hence, will involve them in governance,” it stated.

The coalition said it considered it a duty to be the voice of reason to help the people to “adopt decisions using evidence devoid of emotions, passions wants perceived needs and party sentiments but based on reasoning conducted according to strict principles of validity.”

According to the group: “It is based on the foregoing that the Ondo State Professionals Coalition has declared her support for the candidacy of Mr. Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) and we are already in talk with him in order to hold a town hall meeting with all the professionals in the state at a date and venue to be announced.”

The group said such a meeting would be an opportunity for the PDP candidate to address critical issues. “This, we believe will justify our choice of his candidature,” it added.

  • Abuja ruling has no effect on Jegede’s nomination, says PDP

The Ahmed Makarfi faction of Ondo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday said supporters of the business mogul, Jimoh Ibrahim, misinterpreted the Abuja Federal High Court’s ruling delivered by Justice O. E. Abang.

The faction claimed that the ruling had nothing to do with the ambition of its governorship candidate, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede SAN, ahead of the November 26 governorship poll.

It added that it has already filed a petition against Justice Abang at the Nigeria Judicial Commission (NJC).

Addressing reporters at the campaign office of Jegede, the party’s factional chairman, Clement Faboyede, noted that the ruling was mainly on whose faction should produce candidates for PDP in 2019 general elections from Southwest states.

Faboyede backed his claim by saying neither Jegede nor Jimoh was a party to the suit that has so far yielded two rulings from the same court.

He insisted that Jegede was the authentic PDP candidate recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Faboyede said nine claimants in the suit filed on June 7, were seeking some reliefs, which sought to determine the tenure and membership of the state executive committee of the PDP in the Southwest Zone and in addition, directions in respect of the party’s primaries for the 2019 general elections.

Besides, he said the claimants sought a declaration that they were the people entitled to deal with nomination of candidates for the 2019 general elections.

He said: “It should be noted that the Ondo State governorship election scheduled for November 26, was not part of the plaintiffs’ claim and no reference was made to it in the claim.”

Faboyede noted that the suit had some drama of the absurd in that, a counsel, Mr. Olagoke Fakunle (SAN), who took the summon for the plaintiffs, also later appeared for the defendants, meaning that he had sued himself.

He said this absurdity also played out in the second process of the suit, when two lawyers from the same law firm, TRP Law, came out – one appearing for the plaintiffs and the other for the defendants.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the leadership of the PDP are defendants in the suit.

  • Jegede is divine choice, say ex-deputy governor, monarch

A former deputy governor of Ondo State and one-time ambassador to Uganda, Chief Omolade Oluwateru, has described the candidature of Mr. Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a “God’s given project”. Also, the Olukare of Ikare, Oba Akadiri Momoh, said the PDP candidate was reliable and hardworking.

Oluwateru said Jegede is the most suitable candidate having worked in the governor’s cabinet for the past seven and half years.

The ex-deputy governor, who served under the late former Governor Olusegun Agagu, spoke yesterday, when a group, the Jegede Network Forum, which he is a member, received the candidate in Akure, the state capital.

Oluwateru said: ”Jegede was chosen by God and he is extremely lucky. He is not about Akure agenda or project, but he’s God’s own project. For him to have worked in the outgoing governor’s cabinet for seven and half years gives him an edge over his fellow contestants in terms of experience, comportment and proactive reflexes.

“I know what I am talking about, because his understanding of the problems besetting all communities in Ondo State is fresh and steaming hot. And that is why here in Akure alone, we have vowed to mobilise over 150,000 votes for him.”

The Commissioner for Education, Chief Jide Adejuyigbe, said in Akure South alone, the people have launched ‘Operation150, 000 votes’, pointing out that there are 248,000 registered voters in the locality.

The chairman of the Jegede Network Forum, Mr. Adewumi Faji, asked over 5,000 supporters at the event to display their voter cards, which they joyfully did.

Thanking the supporters, an elated Jegede reiterated his cardinal programmes of massive employment through industrialisation and agricultural expansion.

Speaking at his palace, when 30 traditional rulers in Akokoland received the PDP candidate, Oba Momoh described Jegede as “our son who is humble, hardworking and reliable”.

He said the Mimiko administration had performed creditably and that it deserved a successor “from the performing team.”

The monarch said Jegede had been a friend of the grassroots people, long before he knew that he would be tipped to become governor.

Oba Momoh said: “Your coming here is just to pay homage; there is no need to campaign, as we all know the stuff you are made of.”

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly, Alhaji Fatai Olotu, an indigene of the area, appealed to the people to vote for continuity, stressing that Mimiko had completed the Awara Dam Scheme and that what was left was water-pipe extension to the various Akoko communities.

He also recalled that the Mimiko administration built an ultra-modern market in Ikare-Akoko, apart from providing free shuttle buses for school pupils.

  • Jegede: Akeredolu jittery over my popularity

Jegede: Akeredolu jittery over my popularity

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flag bearer  in the Ondo State,  Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), has chided his All Progressives Congress (APC) counterpart, Rotimi Akeredolu, for describing him (Jegede) as a stooge of Governor Olusegun Mimiko. He said the APC candidate was just overwhelmed by the Eyilafe phenomenon vibrating across the state.

Reacting to the outburst  in a statement  by his media aide, Mr Kayode Fasua, Jegede said the claim by Akeredolu, a custodian of a controversial ticket secured through corrupt means, is a face-saving design to cover-up  the polarisation in his party at the federal and state Levels.

Describing  Akeredolu as an attention seeker, who is threatened by his popularity, Jegede said that the People of Ondo state are too sophisticated for Akeredolu’s  pettiness and negative politics, insisting that the APC candidate should prepare for his imminent defeat in the November election.

According to Jegede, it is ridiculous to say a man who has attained the peak of his career and unarguably the longest serving head of   body of benchersý in the country, with a distinguished career in both private and public service, will be tagged as stooge to anybody.

He said Akeredolu’s description of his ambition as a third term agenda of Governor Mimiko only confirms his fears and that of the APC’s looming failure, because the people are solidly behind him.

Urging the APC candidate to come forward with his plans for the state. Jegede said: “Akeredolu is obviously overwhelmed by  his (jegede)’ popularity, display of love and approval for his  candidature by the people of the state, hence, his decision to result to the diatribe.”

Describing Akeredolu as  an outsider in the state who has no base, even in his home town, Jegede said: “Ondo electorates has no place for people who lacks character,” adding that “ingrates and backstabbers have no place in the governance of the Sunshine state”.

Insisting that integrity is a factor in determining who governs the state, Jegede mentioned that his competence is not in doubt even as he offered to place on record that he remains the most competent, credible among co -contenders in the approaching election, especially in view of his role “in the most successful government so far in the history of our dear state.”

This Jegede said is against public knowledge of the deficiency of “Mr Akeredolu who has little knowlege of the socio-political subset of Ondo state, it’s people and structure which is why he made a mess of himself and the AC, which he stood for in the 2012 election as he couldn’t answer simple questions boardaring on names and locations of popular places in Akure the state capital”.

     Jegede unfolds agenda for youths

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Ondo state, Mr Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), has spoken on youth empowerment, saying that, if elected, youths would be made employers of labour, instead of job hunters.

The legal luminary and former Commissioner for Justice said his government would give priority to  youth empowerment with the aim of making them self-reliant.

Speaking with reporters in Akure, the state capital, Jegede said his government will encourage youths to develop their creative talents.

He said: “the time has come for us to make our youths realise their potentials, that they can  be useful for themselves and be responsible for the financial fortune of others if given the right environment to thrive.   ”The present government in the state has done well in this regard, especially as it affects young farmers, who have practically become self reliant through the various agro business centres in Ore, Auga and Isuada, among others”

The PDP candidate said young graduates will be encouraged to complement the efforts of government in advancing the state.

Jegede also unfolded plans to make farming fascinating for practising farmers and those being wooed into the practice.

He  promised  to support cocoa farmers and make farming appealing to the youths

He added: ”we will give comfort to farmers, leverage on our ability to produce Cocoa and train our Farmers on how to produce premium Cocoa that will add value to earning.”

Emphasising the  importance of youth in community and national development, the legal icon promised to encourage youths to partner with government.

He said: “We collectively  will build a state of our dreams that will be the envy of all as necessary steps are taken to ensure a sense of belonging  that will motivate all to work towards achieving the ultimate goal of taking our dear state to its place of destiny.”

I’ll build power plant, Jegede assures

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ondo State, Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) has promised to tackle the erratic power supply to the state by building a power plant.

He gave the assurance during his tour of communities in Owo Local Government and the four local councils that constitute Akokoland.

Jegede, who was received by traditional rulers cutting across 30 communities in Akokoland, said his focus was to transform Ondo’s economy by creating enabling environment for big industries.

“Our youths are in need of jobs and how do they get the jobs? We need industries and how can the industries work? They need regular power supply.

“That is why we will build a gas plant that will energise our power plant which will provide electricity for the various industries that we are planning to set up through private-partnership participation.”

He urged communities in need of various amenities to be rest assured that their needs would be met as he had designed his economic blueprint for the development of all areas in Ondo State.

At Ikare-Akoko, Jegede who was received by the Olukare of Ikare, Oba Akadiri Momoh and his subjects, said the deplorable condition of federal roads in Akoko land would form his priority once he is elected in the November 26 governorship election
