Jegede: I ‘ll defeat APC, AD, others with wide margin

ONDO State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), at the weekend, said the November 26 poll will be an easy ride for his party.

He boasted that he would defeat his two major political rivals – the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Alliance for Democracy (AD) candidates – with a wide margin.

The PDP candidate spoke at an event in Akure, the state capital, which was organised by his supporters to thank the people on the announcement of his name by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the candidate of PDP.

He said: “With what has happened today, it has really shown that I am the only candidate of PDP.

“You will recall that the issue had generated some form of interest because I won’t call it dispute. It confirmed to me that PDP is a party to beat.

“Otherwise, nobody will show interest. I wonder why everybody is interested in PDP’s candidate .

“There was a transparent primary here in Akure, which commenced in the morning, concluded in a little bit late in the afternoon or evening; and a winner emerged and that was my self.

“INEC was present both from Akure here and INEC from Abuja , security agents were also there and it was opened for all to see and that to me was a confirmation that what we have done was transparent and lawful.”

Labour leaders have backed the candidature of the PDP candidate.

They expressed their confidence in Jegede’s ability to deliver on his electioneering campaign promises at a  meeting the PDP standard-bearer held with head teachers at the Labour House in Akure, the Ondo capital, at the weekend.

Present at the meeting were representatives of head teachers, who used the forum to bare their minds on expectations from Jegede, if elected as Governor Olusegun Mimiko’s successor.

The state NLC Chairman, Comrade Bosede Daramola, who spoke at the meeting, explained that the school administrators came to the parley on their volition because of the need to discuss with Jegede on his plans for the education sector.

According to her, Jegede understands and knows that with their support, by the grace of God, November 26 will be a reality.

Jegede assured that recruitment of more teachers for public schools across the state will be one of his priorities when elected into office, just as he added that non-mega schools will also be brought up to standard.

The governorship hopeful emphasised that a lot of plans have been laid out to sustain the gains of the Mimiko-led government in the education sector.

ONDO State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the November 21 election Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) has promised to use his experience of over seven years in government to make profound statement with governance, if elected.

The former Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General said his position as an integral part of the Governor Olusegun Mimiko administration has given him an insight into what could be done to raise the bar of governance.

Fielding questions from reporters in Akure at the weekend, the senior lawyer said the challenges of the time demand that the best hand is engaged to address them.

Jegede added that he would rely on his understanding of the state and its people as well as his experience as part of the administration for over seven years to identify targets and drive same.

Insisting that legacies of previous administrations would be protected, the PDP candidate added that he has perfected a blueprint for job creation and the growth of the state’s economy to the desired position.

    Jegede unfolds agenda for women

THE governorship candidate of Ahmed Makarfi’s faction of Ondo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), has assured women of opportunities of engagement and empowerment, if elected into office.

Jegede urged them to be ready and be bold to take up responsibilities.

He said no woman would be denied the opportunity of engagement because of the perception that she is a woman.

If anything, he said they would be encouraged to take up responsibilities, adding that there will be opportunities for them to meet.

Jegede gave the assurance while fielding questions from reporters in Akure yesterday.

He said women will be empowered under his government, adding that additional platform to  the state’s micro-credit scheme will be created to give them opportunities to own businesses and be gainfully engaged in commerce.

According to the candidate, because women need adequate protection, his government will “take a look at our protective laws for the womenfolk, especially considering what they go through in terms of inheritance, owing personal property and commerce”.

Justifying his position to protect women, Jegede said: “They are mothers of all and they should be protected. They need help which we shall render and make them strong enough to be relevant at the home-front and also have a solid commerce base.”

The candidate, at the weekend, called on aggrieved party members to sheath the sword and join in the drive to propel the party to victory in November polls.

Speaking at Igbekebo in the Southern Senatorial district, where the people in their large numbers defied a downpour to receive him at the community’s town hall, Jegede promised to leverage on Ondo’s human and natural resources to improve their socio-economic well-being.

Jegede: my blueprint ’ll tackle economic challenge

THE Ahmed Makarfi faction of Ondo State Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) governorship candidate, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), has said he possesses the blueprint to solve the state’s economic challenge.

He added that besides the blueprint, “we have God and we have the strategy”.

Fielding questions from reporters after a meeting with artisans, who trooped into his campaign office in Akure to back him yesterday, Jegede said: “There is no doubt that times and things are hard, but we won’t run away from the challenge.”

According to him, “the economic challenge the state is experiencing as a result of the nation’s gloomy economic situation is surmountable”.

He added that if given the mandate to administer the state, his government would proffer permanent solutions to these problems by implementing them in detail.

Jegede said his administration “will focus on sustainable industries, and empower the youth and entrepreneurs as well as farmers so that they can become employers of labour”.

The governorship candidate said his government would create the enabling environment for industries to thrive.

He added: “We will give comfort to farmers, leverage on our ability to produce cocoa and train our farmers on how to produce premium cocoa that will add value to earning.

“We will make the state capital a true window of development, create business districts as well as invest in education.

“Access would be given to every businessman ready to invest in the economy. We want to build capacity for our people. We will create the Ondo State that our people will be proud of.”

  • Jegede unfolds agenda for youths

THE Ahmed Makarfi faction of Ondo State Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), has affirmed that if elected, youths will be made employers of labour instead of job hunters.

The senior advocate, who is the immediate past Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, said his administration will give top priority to youth empowerment with the aim of making them self-reliant and employers of labour.

Jegede, who spoke with reporter in Akure yesterday, said his administration will encourage youths to look in the direction of becoming self-employed and economically fit to accommodate others in their respective businesses.

“The time has come for us to make our youths realise their potentials; that they can be useful for themselves and be responsible for the financial fortune of others, if given the right environment to thrive.

”The present government has done well in this regard, especially as it affects young farmers, who have practically become self-reliant through the various agribusiness centres in Ore, Auga and Isuada among others.”

  • Jegede eyes farmers’ welfare, cocoa export

THE Ahmed Makarfi faction of Ondo State Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) governorship candidate, Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), has promised better welfare for farmers, if elected.

He said his administration would leverage on the state’s ability to produce cocoa.

Speaking with reporters in Akure yesterday, the senior advocate said his government would create enabling environment for industries to thrive.

He said: “We will give comfort to farmers, leverage on our ability to produce cocoa and train our farmers on how to produce premium cocoa that will add value to earning.

“We will make the state capital a true window of development, create business district as well as invest in education.”

The former Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, who admitted that the time is challenging, added that he intends to deal with the economy.

His words: “Our objective is to deal with the economy. It is going to be more on governance. We would give access to every businessman that is ready to invest in the economy. We want to build capacity for our people. We will create the Ondo State that our people will be proud of.”

The PDP candidate, who is eyeing the state southern district to boost its economy, said he intends to take advantage of the licensed Ilaje industrial zone to grow the state.

“The South has the longest coast line. The sands in Ilaje shine in the sun. If you stay up and there is sun, it will be shining like gold. You take it and use it for glass and as soon as you take a dip and leave it, few hours later, it will come back.”

  • Party mocks Jegede’s economic blueprint

Ondo State All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised the economic blueprint of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Eyitayo Jegede (SAN)

Jegede’s blueprint promised to initiate policies that will make the state less dependent on Federal Allocation.

He said the state would disconnect financially from the centre, stressing that the industrial base would be created in the Ondo southern belt, with Ilaje Free Trade Zone as his priority.

But the APC described the statement as nothing but an attempt to hoodwink the citizenry, who it said are groaning due to maladministration of the Governor Olusegun Mimiko-led administration for the past eight years.

A statement by the APC Director of Media and Publicity, Steve Otaloro, said: “We consider this comment as a tasteless political rhetoric coming from the PDP governorship candidate.

“The people of Ondo State are used to comment like this from Eyitayo’s godfather, Governor Mimiko, who promised to transform the land and lives of the southern senatorial district’s people and indeed Ondo State while seeking their votes, but dumped them after securing their mandate.”

    •Accuses governor of impunity

A Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Ondo State Governor on Political Affairs, Otito Atikase Thompson, yesterday resigned his appointment to protest the choice of ex-Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) as Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the November 26 poll.

In his letter of resignation to Governor Olusegun Mimiko, he said: “I hereby wish to notify you of the resignation of my appointment as a senior special assistant (SSA) to the governor on Political Affairs and express my appreciation for the opportunity to serve the people of the state in that capacity.

“I have observed with concern that since you left your former party, the Labour Party (LP), to join the PDP, most of us in the Old PDP as you prefer to address us, have been treated with disdain in the affairs of the party and government as conquered politicians with no regards for our political careers and future.

“The culture of consultations, dialogue and debate with which we were nurtured is banished in this new arrangement and the party organs and structures deliberately collapsed to let you have your way like a potentate.

“You made unilateral choices for the party and the state in the national leadership of the party but sooner often act inconsistently with such decisions contrary to the image with which Ondo State is known.

“Your recent unilateral choice, declaration and imposition of a governorship candidate on the party from your Central Senatorial District to succeed you after an unprecedented eight years in office, which is offensive to the political psyche of the people of our state, is completely unacceptable.

“On my consultations with the majority of our party leaders and members, including those who will falsely tell you, all is well, I am convinced that while remaining a member of our party, the best option is to join other compatriots within the party to do what is right in the choice of Senator Alli Modu Sheriff as our national chairman and Olusola Nehemiah Ebiseni as our governorship candidate.”

Jegede is Ondo PDP candidate as Sheriff plans primary

•Sheriff’s faction holds primary next week  •APC to pick candidates on Saturday

Former Ondo State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) yesterday was elected the governorship candidate of the Ahmed Makarfi-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction for the November 26 governorship poll.

He scored 760 votes in the primary held at the International Event Centre, Akure, the state capital.

Jegede contested with the former deputy governorship candidate of PDP in 2012 poll, Saka Lawal, who scored 22 votes. No vote was declared voided.

The exercise, which started at 9.55 am, was led by Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson. He was assisted by Senator Margery Okadigbo and others.

It was witnessed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

Jegede, who hailed the party’s delegates and his opponent, said the PDP is one family, adding that it would continue to open its doors for reconciliation.

The PDP candidate said with dwindling economy, where prices of commodities have increased, his “target is to rebuild the state’s economy”.

He said: “There is no victor, there is no vanquish; we are all winners. This is purely a family matter within the PDP. We will continue to build a court of friendship and bridges of friendship among our people.

“We will open our doors for those who are interested in genuine reconciliation.

“PDP is a big party and for those who are in the other side, it is between light and darkness. PDP is the light and we have seen it in the last one year.

“I offer myself to serve and to take the flag of PDP with humility and gratitude to God. I accept this nomination and by November 26, we shall lead PDP to victory.

“This indeed is a challenge to all of us. The economy is dwindling everyday. The price of diesel has gone up from N135 per litre to N200. So is the price of bread and rice. It is now time to talk about economy, economy and economy. By that, our people will be happy and build prosperity for our state.”

Lawal, who also hailed the delegates, called for reconciliation among warring members.

He lamented that majority of their leaders have joined other factions in the state.

The party’s candidate vowed not to leave PDP, and promised to work for the party’s success at the poll.

Governor Olusegun Mimiko described the exercise as the beginning of PDP’s victory.

He said: “We will beat APC big in November 26. We want to tell Nigerians that PDP is in charge in Ondo State.”

He urged party members to return to their wards and local governments and start campaigning for Jegede.

Dickson hailed the party delegates for supporting the electoral officers in conducting a free and fair primary election.

Jegede and Dr. Olu Agunloye of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) are still the two candidates produced by their party primaries.

It was learnt the Sheriff’s camp of the PDP would have its primaries next Tuesday, near Ilesa garage, Akure.

The faction’s apspirants are Sola Ebiseni, Bamiduro Dada, Jimoh Ibrahim, Niran Sule-Akinsuyi, who defected from All Progressives Congress (APC) to PDP and the only woman aspirant, Mrs. Abiye Ademuyegun.

The APC will, this Saturday, conduct its primary election for its 24 aspirants.
