    BREAKING: Hisbah arrests Jigawa commissioner with married woman in Kano

    The Kano State Hisbah Board on Friday confirmed the  arrest and detention of Jigawa Commissioner of Special Duties, Auwal Danladi Sankara, for allegedly having love affairs with a married woman, Tasleem Baba Nabegu.

    Sankara was caught red handed with the married woman in an uncompleted building, Hisbah, a Sharia police, said.

    The Hisbah Director General, Abba Sufi confirmed the arrest of Sankara with a married woman through intelligence tracking after receiving series of complaints of his “nefarious acts” with the married woman by her husband’s younger brother.

    “Yes, it is true we have arrested Auwal Danladi Sankara, the Jigawa Commissioner, with a married woman in an uncompleted building that belongs to him.

    “Unknown to him, we were tracking him based on reports we received against him,” the Hisbah Director General said.

    According to Hisbah, Auwalu Sankara will be prosecuted on Monday at a Court of Law.

    The arrest followed a complaint by Nasiru Bulama, the woman’s husband, who accused the commissioner of engaging in an illicit affair with his wife, Tasleem Baba Nabegu, the mother of his two children.

    “Nasiru Bulama filed the complaint with the Kano State Police Command, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Hisbah Board, alleging Sankara’s involvement in illicit sexual activities with his wife,” the official added.

    The DG explained that they are taking Sankara to court on a number of cases against him including operating an illicit drugs Centers with names Picklock, 360 and three other areas.

    He said: “We have been having problems with Sankara because he is operating illicit drugs Centers in the names of hotels with prostitution and drug addiction activities”.

    First Lady condoles Jigawa governor over tanker explosion

    First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has sent a condolence message to Jigawa state governor, Mallam Umar Namadi, over the devastating petrol tanker explosion that claimed over 100 lives in Majiya Villa, Taura council area of the state.

    The tragic incident, which occurred early Wednesday, has left many injured and properties destroyed.

    In a condolence message made available to journalists at the State House, Abuja, Senator Tinubu described the incident as most unfortunate and prayed for God to grant the families of the deceased the strength to bear their loss.

    She also prayed for a speedy recovery of the injured and sought Allah’s mercy for the departed souls.

    The First Lady’s message was a gesture of solidarity with the government and people of Jigawa State during their time of grief.

    “I condole with the Governor of Jigawa State, His Excellency, Mallam Umar Namadi, and the good people of the State on the unfortunate tanker explosion which occurred on Wednesday, 16th October 2024.

    “This tragic incident which left many dead, several injured, and loss of properties is most unfortunate.

    “My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. I pray to God to grant the friends, families, and loved ones of the departed souls the fortitude to bear the painful loss and grant speedy recovery to the injured.

    “May Almighty Allah grant Aljanah Fridaus to the departed and comfort all those affected by this tragedy”, she said.

    Jigawa trains secondary teachers on educational digital transformation

    In an effort to revolutionize education through digital transformation, the Office of the Technical Adviser on ICT and Digital Economy in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, hosted a 7-day boot camp from August 20 to August 27, 2024.

    The event took place at the NYSC Orientation Camp and Dutse Model International School, training over 4,000 secondary school teachers.

    The initiative, inaugurated by the Governor of Jigawa State, targeted Education Management Information System (EMIS) officers from 288 secondary schools in Jigawa, as well as staff from ten zonal education offices and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology.

    Addressing the event, Malam Umar Namadi, FCA, the Executive Governor of Jigawa State, highlighted significant milestones achieved under the JIGAWA COMPETE Initiative in the state’s educational digital transformation. Governor Namadi emphasized the successful design and implementation of a comprehensive Educational Management Information System (EMIS) software.

    Over 4,000 secondary school teachers have already enrolled and downloaded the Jigawa EMIS Application from the Google Play Store and web platforms, enabling real-time data collection and management.

    The Governor also acknowledged support from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in providing internet services, ensuring free online access for users of the EMIS software. Additionally, the state has recruited and trained EMIS officers for each secondary school to serve as master trainers, facilitating the initiative’s statewide implementation.

    Governor Namadi announced the provision of fifty National Identity Management Enrolment devices to enroll all Senior Secondary School students into the National Identity Management Database, issuing them National Identification Numbers (NIN). This initiative aims to track out-of-school children, combat learning poverty, monitor student progress, and address educational disparities.

    The “Creating Opportunity for Mastery, Proficiency, and Technology Empowerment (J-COMPETE)” initiative is central to this transformation, focusing on equipping teachers and students with 21st-century educational skills.

    The program featured presentations by various professional facilitators on critical educational topics throughout the week. Dr. Rislan Kanya, Technical Adviser on ICT and Digital Economy to the Jigawa Governor, discussed “Learning Poverty, School Deprivation, Learning Deprivation, and Progression Deprivation,” emphasizing the role of the Jigawa Educational Management Information System (EMIS) in addressing these issues. Dr. Kanya also presented the “J-COMPETE Philosophy,” outlining the program’s principles and objectives.

    Representative from UNICEF, Michael Banda and  Mustapha Ahmed  from FCDO-Plane provided a global perspective on “The Danger of Learning Poverty,” underscoring the urgency of tackling this issue. Prof. Ahmed Iliyasu Dambatta, Dean of the Faculty of Education at Bayero University, Kano, explored “The New Role of Teachers in 21st Century Education and Techno-Pedagogy Approach for Effective Teaching and Learning,” highlighting the evolving nature of education. Mr. Nazir Halilu, Nigeria’s Country Manager for GRID3, emphasized the importance of Geographic Information System (GIS) in reducing learning poverty and ensuring inclusivity in education.

    Further sessions focused on practical aspects of educational technology and group work breakout sessions. Mr. Babagana Aminu provided insights into utilizing EMIS for real-time monitoring and data analysis, while Mr. Abubakar Isa Kimpa, Director of ICT at the Federal Ministry of Education, discussed “Digital Teaching and Learning” from a federal perspective.

    A panel discussion on the “Role of Teachers in Transforming Education and Data in the Digital Transformation of the Education Sector” brought together experts to explore Jigawa State’s educational goals. The session provided insights into international commitments to addressing learning poverty.

    The program included practical demonstrations of the Jigawa EMIS and discussions on the role of digital learning platforms such as Learning Passport, Inspire, and Ignite in enhancing teacher and learner capacity. Participants received hands-on training on connecting to Airtel Routers provided by the Ministry, accessing free internet via the Nigeria Learning Passport, and utilizing the Jigawa EMIS Web Portal and Mobile App.

    The event concluded with sessions on Online Content, Digital Pedagogy, Student Engagement, and Tech Support, equipping teachers with tools and support for success in the digital education landscape facilitatd by Rislan Kanya. The program wrapped up with a review and evaluation session led by Mr. Murtala Kazaure and Arch Habibu Kani, aimed at gathering feedback to enhance future digital education initiatives.

    The program will continue at 15 digital innovation centers established by NITDA across the state, with each teacher undergoing 42 hours of practical sessions on Digital Literacy and Digital Pedagogy. Successful participants will receive a certificate in digital teaching and learning awarded by Cosmopolitan University Abuja, validated by the Faculty of Education at Bayero University Kano and the Google Certified Education program.

    Another five drown in Jigawa

    No fewer than five persons drown in Gantsa town, the headquarter of Buji local government area of Jigawa State.

    The cattle cart carrying them capsized while trying to cross a damaged bridge due to flood from Birninkudu a neighboring local government area. 

    The Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement by its spokesman DSP Lawal Shiisu Adams. 

    The statement reads:  “On a tragic and sad note, today Tuesday, August 27th, 2024 at about 1200hrs, information reached police at Gantsa town that five people drowned at the town. 

     “The deceased was carried by a cattle cart attempted to cross the road at Ganta town, where the passing flood water came with pressure and over powered the cart and capsized

    “On receipt of the pitiful report, a team of policemen in collaboration with a local divers rushed to the scene with a view to rescue them alive. The rescue team and conveyed the victims to Gansta Cottage Hospital, regretfully the medical doctor on duty certified them all of them dead”.

    Some of the victims include two children aged two and seven, a teenage girl Fiddausi Dahiru;  Lurwanu Adamu, 30, and Idris Abubakar 50.  

    The corpses were released to relatives for burial”.

    Two weeks ago, another three teenage girls reported drowned in a pond at Tulla village of Buji local government.

    A father and son died in the same week in a building collapse after heavy downpour that caused flood.

    Malaria prevalence: BASF donates treated mosquito nets to boarding students in Jigawa

    As part of efforts to curb malaria prevalence among boarding school students in Jigawa State, an insecticide treated net (ITNs) manufacturing company, BASF, has donated mosquito nets to the students of Science and Technical College, Hadejia in the state.

    Speaking while presenting the nets, the BASF Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Country Cluster, West Africa, Dr Jean-Marc Ricca, said the gesture is to protect the students against malaria while in school.

    The chief executive officer explained that it is also to complement the state government and other partners’ efforts at reducing the prevalence of malaria in the state and the nation in general.

    According to him, “I’m happy to present 800 number of ITNs to you as part of our contribution to prevent and curb prevalence of malaria; especially during this rainy season, where stagnant water and grasses are breeding mosquitoes is all over. We will also retrieve of old nets from the students to be recycled for other uses”.

    Dr Jean-Marc Ricca added that “the exercise will be an opportunity for the students to discover recycling for a cleaner environment”.

    He noted that the mosquito-treated nets donation is not part of the main ITNs distribution to households in the state, but a new component of it called ‘End of Life’, under which old nets are retrieved from communities for recycling for a cleaner and healthy environment.

    Also, the Director Nature Conservation, Ministry of Environment, Mr Ibrahim Lawan, commended the manufacturers for retrieving the old nets for recycling, especially as they are not degradable.

    Eight hospitalised in Jigawa as herders attack four communities

    The Jigawa Police Command has confirmed attacks on four towns and villages by herdsmen in, Birninkudu, Dutse and Kiyawa local government areas. 

    The attacks left no fewer than eight people hospitalised. 

    Jigawa Police spokesman DSP Lawal Shiisu Adams, in a statement explained: “Information revealed that herdsmen in large numbers armed with bows and arrows, matchets and sticks invaded Baranda village and attacked the villagers”. 

    This came barely one week after a grand ceremony at Kabak village in Kirikasamma local government area by the Jigawa State Government to celebrate peaceful return and confidence between herdsmen and farmers in the State.

    The statement added: “The villagers rose up in defence of themselves, resulting in the injuries of eight of them. They were rushed to the Dutse General Hospital for medical attention.

     “In his efforts for community engagement, conflict resolution and peace building in Dutse emirate and the state as a whole, the Jigawa state Police Commissioner, Ahmed T. Abdullahi alongside Squadron Commander 35PMF Dutse, Area Commander Dutse, and  Divisional Police Officers of Dutse and Kiyawa Divisions visited four (4)  affected villages of Kalai, Waza, Baranda and Katanga in Dutse, Kiyawa and Birnin Kudu local government areas over the recent hostilities between farmers and herders, where scores of people were injured and farmlands destroyed. 

    “The Commissioner of Police interacts with the major stakeholders of both herders and farmers on the need for collaboration, synergy, tolerance, and understanding of each other and also on the need to avoid taking laws into their own hands and to report any wrongdoing of mischief, encroachment of cattle route and others offences to the nearest Police Station or other security agencies for immediate action”.

    ‘5 injured in Jigawa farmer-herder clash

    No fewer than five farmers were injured in a clash between farmers and cattle herders in Hayin Kogi forest in Birninkudu Local Government Area of  Jigawa.

    In a statement yesterday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, DSP Lawan Shiisu, said: “Report at the command’s disposal revealed that at 1700HRS, farmers at the Hayin Kogi Forest were attacked by herders resident of Waza Fulani settlements of Birninkudu LGA while clearing bushes in preparation for wet season farming.

    “As a result, some of the farmers escaped and abandoned their tricycles, phones and farm implements,” he said.

    EU, UNICEF to enrol 1.5m children, youths in Jigawa, Katsina, Kano

    The European Union (EU), in collaboration with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), has pledged to enrol and skill 1.5 million children, youths and adolescents in Jigawa, Katsina and Kano states.

    Michael Banda, Senior Education Manager, UNICEF, Kano Field Office, made the pledge at a multi- sectoral key stakeholders meeting on education and youths empowerment project on Wednesday in Kano.

    He said the programme was aimed at increasing the number of girls and boys benefiting from safe, inclusive, relevant learning and skills development opportunities in Kano, Jigawa and Sokoto states.

    Banda said the four-year programme which commenced from October 2023 to August 2027, would cover Kano, Jigawa and Sokoto states.

    “The programme operation is categorised into three main outputs involving strengthened education governance and learning, expanded access to safe and inclusive learning environment and giving quality, continuous learning and enhanced competencies.”

    The education manager pointed out that in Nigeria, many children between seven and 14 could not read or write simple sentence.

    “Our aim is for them to get skill that will make them competitive, marketable and self-sustaining, to start a business.

    “We are also looking at Integrated Qur’anic School because we have Qur’anic schools that do an integrated curriculum which includes literacy and numeracy beyond the religious education.

    “We are going to catch everyone, including those who do not have space in the formal school,” he said.

    Banda said that Kano State had been selected to be one of the top beneficiaries of the newly introduced European Union-funded education and empowerment programme in Nigeria.

    According to him, Kano will have the lion share of the project because of its population and the number of out-of-school children.

    He said that EU was not only concentrating its resources in Kano, but in Northwest, Northeast and other states in Nigeria.

    The UNICEF education manager added that the EU was an all-weather partner for UNICEF and various states in ensuring that all children accessed quality education.

    Earlier, the Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Umar Doguwa, commended the development partners for the gesture.

    He restated the state government’s commitment to invest in education sector.

    Workers reject N10,000 wage award in Jigawa

    The JIgawa chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has rejected a N10,000 wage award offer to the civil servants by the State Government.

    This was contained in a statement jointly signed by the chairmen and secretaries of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Joint Public Service Negotiation Council after an emergency meeting in Dutse.

    The statement indicated that the state government has violated the agreement reached during the negotiation between the organised Labour and the State Government.

    It added the Organised Labour has not signed any agreement or memorandum of understanding with the State Government to award N10,000 as salary award to civil servants for three months.

    According to the statement: “Organised Labour noted with dismay that the government statement was a total misrepresentation of the earlier agreement reached between the state government’s committee and the labour union on the issue”.

    “Under the agreement the state government will pay all civil servants the sum of ten thousand naira only as salary award for six months, beginning from October 2023 to March 2024 when the new minimum wage for workers is expected to take course.

    “Also the agreement seek for the grant of Agricultural loan to interested civil servants as well as provision of other palliatives including allocation of food items through the state emergency management agency for distribution to workers unions”.  

    The Labour union maintained that there was no signed agreement befor the State Government announced a wage award of N10,000 for three months only.

    Jigawa approves N10,000 for workers

    Jigawa state government has approved a token of N10, 000 to each of the civil servant at the state, local government and local education authority in the state.

    Commissoner for Information Sagir Musa announced that it takes effect from January.

    Musa explained that amount is wage award to each of the personal on the payroll of the state, local government and local education authority for the state where each would collect a token of N10,000 from January to March this year.

    According to him “this is after a deliberation on the memorandum presented by the State Head of Civil Service (HOS) for payment of salary awards to workers at the state executive council meeting presided over by Governor Malam Umar Namadi.

    “The payment is pending when a new national minimum wage is expected to have been signed into law and other palliative”.

    It could be recalled that the Federal Government and Trade Union Congress (TUC), have agreed with N35,000 wage award to civil servants following the removal of fuel subsidy.
