I-G warns police commissioners against unprofessional conducts

The Inspector-General of Police, (IGP), Mr Ibrahim Idris, has warned Commissioners of Police (CPs) in the commands across the federation to be professional in handling criminal cases.

The force spokesman, CSP Jimoh Moshood, in a statement in Abuja on Monday, said Idris gave the warning at a meeting with the Deputy Inspector-Generals (DIGs), Assistant Inspector-General (DIGs) and CPs.

The inspector-general cautioned them against illegal investigation of cases, unlawful and prolonged detention of suspects.

He warned that any policeman caught taking bribe before granting suspects bail would be dismissed from service.

“As you are all aware, bail is free. Always sensitise officers and men in your commands on this because anyone caught violating this act will be dismissed from service.

“The law as we know is blind. We represent the most visible arm of justice and we must use that power prudently.

“We must embrace change as the only permanent fixture in life.

“I expect the highest standard from you. Don’t let anybody buy your conscience but hold on to the ethics. I want you to be very professional,” he said.

Idris said the era of bribery and corrupt practices in the police circle was over.

He warned that any senior police officer found to be engaged in corrupt practices would face the full wrath of the law.

The inspector-general urged them to change the public perception of the force through their conducts.

He charged them to be very civil in relating with the public and respect the people’s socio-cultural values.

He assured them of the Federal Government’s readiness to address the challenges facing the force.

Evans: Certain information are not for public consumption – Police

The police have urged Nigerians not to fret over the reported “vanishing” of suspected kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeje George Onwuamadike alias Evans.

The appeal followed a report which alleged that Evans’ whereabouts was unknown and that the suspect had vanished.
According to the spokesman for the Force Headquarters, Jimoh Moshood, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CPS), Evans was safe and still in police custody.

Moshood said investigation was still ongoing, adding that the suspect would be charged to court as soon as all ends were tied.

He said: “The media need to avoid stories that could create fear, tension or misrepresentation among the masses.

Where did Evans vanish to? That headline was misleading. The suspect and his accomplices are very much in our custody.

“We are working hard to ensure that justice is served at the end of the day. There are certain information that are not for public consumption to avoid jeopardising investigation or even national security.

“Evans is with the police. His whereabout is known but cannot be made public. We are appealing to Nigerians to remain calm and support the police to conclude its investigation.”

Police search Ekweremadu’s Abuja guest house

The police on Friday conducted a search on the official guest house of the Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu. The guest house is located in the highbrow Maitama District, Abuja.

Ekweremadu’s Special Adviser, Mr. Uche Anichukwu who confirmed the search on the guest house, said police did not inform the senator or any of his aides before the search was conducted.

Anichukwu further said that only the senator’s steward was present when the police team arrived at the property, adding that nothing incriminating was found in the premises.

According to him, the policemen were said to have told the steward that they were detailed by the Force Headquarters to carry out the search.

When our correspondent called the Force spokesman, Jimoh Moshood for comments, his mobile telephone indicated that his line was switched off.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) caucus in the Senate had, a few weeks ago, raised the alarm, saying that security report at its disposal indicated that the security agencies were planning to invade Ekweremadu’s residence either in Abuja or Enugu.

According to the spokesman of the caucus, Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe who addressed journalists on the matter, the raid was to be carried out by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Abaribe said the plot was to plant incriminating items; either a huge amount in foreign currencies or guns in Ekweremadu’s targeted residence and then arrest him for money laundry or gun running.

The caucus stated that the motive behind the alleged plot was to put the Deputy President of the Senate out of circulation by arresting and detaining him on trumped up charges.

  • I-G seeks legislation to ease arrest, prosecution of criminals in Africa

I-G seeks legislation to ease arrest, prosecution of criminals in Africa

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris, has called for legislation to make the arrest and prosecution of criminals within Africa easier.

In a  statement, Nigeria Police Force Spokesman, CSP Jimoh Moshood, said Idris made the call on the sideline of the  General Assembly of the Union Mechanism for Police Commissions( AFRIPOL) in Algiers.

He said sometimes, if criminals committed offences in a country and escaped to another country, the police usually found it difficult to arrest and return them to the place the crime was committed to face the law.

“The proposed law will therefore redress this ugly trend, hence, bolster the criminal justice system in the continent.

“This, therefore, means more efficiency and diligence in the
operations of the various police commissions and forces in the continent,’’ he said.

Idris further called for a stronger synergy among the continent’s police commissions.

“This also means effective fight of cross border crimes and
criminality as well as enhanced internal security in the individual African countries.

“This cooperation and strategy should be sustained so that law abiding citizens in the region can go to bed with their two eyes closed,” he said.

In a related development, African Police Cooperation Mechanism, has endorsed Idris as its second Vice-Chairman.

Moshood said that idris was endorsed at the General Assembly of AFRIPOL in Algiers.

He said his endorsement came after he was nominated by the police chiefs of all West African countries at the forum

The assembly also endorsed the Algerian police boss as its chairman.

Others, are the police boss of Central Republic of African as the third Vice Chairman and the Zambian police boss as the rapporteur.

The officials will run the bureau for a period of two years.

Idris said his endorsement would be an added advantage for Nigeria to collaborate with member countries in the areas of intelligence gathering and sharing.

He said it would also ease the arrest and prosecution of trans boarder criminals.
