  • JAMB withdraws UTME results of four candidates

THE Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has withdrawn the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results of four candidates.

The candidates include: Adah Eche with   Registration Number 97512230IB, Taiwo Abisola Omowumi with  Registration Number 97049254GG, Vincent Onyinyechi Prisca with  Registration Number 96531098BC and Sofodun Afolasade Zainab    with  Registration Number  96634599GA.

JAMB’s Head of Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin made this known in a statement yesterday in Abuja.

He said the candidates were involved in attempted fake JAMB result.

“The Board therefore withdraws and invalidates the results of the four candidates found to have been involved in the illicit attempt to fake JAMB result.

“No effort would be spared in identifying and sanctioning any candidate who attempts to falsify results of JAMB-organised examinations (UTME and others) and whoever collaborates or patronises such candidates would also face similar consequence,” the statement said.

Eche was apprehended on Monday by the board for being in possession of a fake UTME result.

He had attempted to upgrade his original UTME score of 153 to 290 with the help of a professional examination fraudster.

According to JAMB, apart from being in possession of a fake UTME result, he was also working with the above- named candidates to have their scores inflated as well.

Meanwhile, the board said it had released the results of 3, 736 who have been cleared of any infraction.

  • 2019 UTME: JAMB remits N5bn to FG’s account

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it remitted N5 billion to the Federal Government purse after the conduct of its 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

This is contained in the board’s weekly bulletin, tagged signed by the JAMB’s Head of Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, on Monday in Lagos.

Benjamin explained later in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the Federal Government gave back N2 billion out of the N5 billion to the board to enhance its operations.

“The board returned N5 billion to the Federal Government, but out of that amount, the board was given N2 billion to further enhance its operations,” he said.

Meanwhile, some 2019 UTME candidates have alleged challenges in accessing their results through telephone as advised by JAMB.

JAMB released the results on Saturday and directed candidates to use the same telephone numbers they used in vending the pins for the examination registration documents to access their results by sending RESULT to a code – 55019.

NAN reports that, of the over 1.8 million candidates who registered for the examination, a total of 1,792,719 had their results released by the board.

The board withheld results of 34,120 candidates over alleged examination malpractice, while results of 15,145 candidates are undergoing further clarification, as in the case of identical twins and siblings, for example.

A parent, Mrs Bridget Otuagha, told NAN that his son had yet to get the result in spite of many efforts.

According to her, the candidate followed the process many times without success.

“I am worried about this whole thing. My son has been trying to get his result since Saturday to no avail.

“He has been sending this RESULT to the said code, up until this morning, and there has been no response to that effect.

“JAMB should see if there is another way,” she told NAN.

Another concerned parent, Mrs Florence Ibem, also told NAN that her son had the same issue.

“Since they released the results, we have not been able to access his score through the telephone number we used in acquiring the registration pin.

“After sending RESULT to the said code severally, there was still no result. This is disturbing and frustrating.

“Something should be done, and urgently too. Even if it is withheld or cancelled, I think we deserve to know,” she said.

When contacted, Benjamin, the board’s Head, Media and Information, apologised to the affected candidates on behalf of the board.

According to him, the challenge was from the service providers.

He said that the board had summoned the service providers for a meeting on the issue.

“We have just had a meeting with the service providers and they assured us that they are working hard to get the issue addressed. In no distant time, such candidates should be able to access their results without any hitch.

“We are just trying to ensure that all the candidates deserving of results should have firsthand information of their performances via their telephones.

“After that, we will post the results on our website for candidates to go ahead and print,” he said.

  • JAMB to release 2019 UTME results from Monday

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has assured candidates of the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) that results would be ready from April 29.

The Board’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dr Fabian Benjamin, disclosed this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Bwari.

Benjamin said that screening of the results would soon be over and the result released.

“We are still screening but hopefully, anytime next week, the results will be ready,” he said.

Speaking also on the board’s readiness to screen results of UTME candidates from 2009 to 2018, Benjamin said this would begin after the release of the 2019 results.

He said this was part of the board’s effort to address the issues of malpractice in the system.

The board had stated that it would only release the 2019 UTME results after undergoing thorough screening to identify and apprehend examination cheats.

The process would identify those involved in multiple registration through biometric capturing and also address group registration by some elite schools, who end up mixing candidate’s data.

The board said: “Normally, results are expected to be out within 24 to 48 hours as obtained in previous examinations held in 2017 and 2018.

“However, the board does not want this to be business as usual.

“Hence the programmed delay, which is part of its deliberate effort to properly scrutinize, identify and address all forms of examination malpractice.

“The board will continue to act decisively with regards to any irregularity discovered even after results are released.

“However, the board has made it a point of duty to screen all activities at all centres via CCTV recordings, to ensure that it does not release results of compromised examinations.”

The board, while regretting all inconvenience caused in the process, reaffirmed its commitment to providing equal opportunity to all candidates in order to articulate their aspirations.

JAMB said that effective from when it would officially release the results, all candidates can simply send RESULT, via SMS, to 55019 using the same number that was used for registration.

The result, it said, would be replied as an SMS shortly after.

This process, the board explained, was simplified to eliminate exploitation by business centres and cyber cafés who often take advantage of candidates.

It also urged candidates to ignore all messages in circulation on how to check the results as they were all products of deceit.

The 2019 UTME was conducted from April 11 to April 18 and over 1.8 million candidates registered for it.

  • JAMB cancels results of two centres in Abia, arrests 100 nationwide

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Monday said it has cancelled the results of two Computer Based (CBT) centres in Abia State over widespread irregularities during the conduct of the just concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

It said the cancellation of the results followed visual evidence obtained from a careful review of Close Circuit Television (CCTV) recordings by a panel of experts engaged by the board.

The board said all the results of the examination sessions conducted by the two centres from April 11 to 18, 2019 are therefore “null and void.”

JAMB, in its Weekly Bulletin released by its Head of Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, on Monday in Abuja, identified the CBT centres as Heritage and Infinity CBT centre and Okwyzil Computer Institute Comprehensive School Ugwunabo, Aba, Abia State.

He said the board has decided to screen the activities of all its CBT centres through CCTV recordings before it can release the results of this year’s UTME.

The spokesperson added that this is to ensure that the board does not release the results of a compromised examination.

“By implication, all the results of all examination sessions starting from April 11, 2019 to 18 April, 2019 conducted by the board at these two centres were cancelled. What occasioned this drastic action by the board was the visual evidence derived from a careful review of the CCTV recordings by a panel of experts engaged by the board.

“However, in order not to unduly punish honest and hardworking candidates who found themselves attached to these two centres, the board magnanimously relocated all the candidates who had taken or were scheduled to take their examination in the two centres to other centres where they had subsequently taken their examinations.

“The board will continue to act decisively with regard to any irregularity discovered even after the results are released. However, the board has made it a point of duty to screen all activities at all centres via CCTV recordings before releasing the results to ensure that it does not release the results of compromised examinations.”

JAMB apologized to innocent candidates involved in the relocation for inconveniencies they may have suffered and reaffirmed its commitment to providing equal opportunity to all candidates to articulate their hopes and aspirations.

Meanwhile, no fewer than 100 persons who engaged in impersonation and fraudulent practices during the examination have been arrested by security operatives across the country.

The board said the annual examination had been bedeviled by unwholesome practices by candidates, their parents and other accomplices.

Benjamin said the fraudsters were engaged in multiple registrations to facilitate impersonation during the examination, saying that this challenge inflates the annual registration figure for the UTME exercise by 30 per cent.

He said that data available to the board showed that the unwholesome practice was prevalent in virtually all the states, including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The JAMB spokesperson said that among those arrested was a notorious cheat who had registered about 64 times in a bit to “ghost-write” for 64 candidates.

According to him, the arrest of the culprits was made possible by the comprehensive and mandatory identity checks conducted on those taking the examination with a view to fishing out professional ghost writers before the release of the results.

“The board, in its unrelenting efforts to stamp out all forms of examination malpractices had synergised with relevant security agencies nationwide to entrap culprits, resulting in their apprehension,” the bulletin added.

  • JAMB dismisses report on alleged reduction of UTME scores

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has described as fake, a trending report that scores of candidates who sat for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) are being reduced.

The board in a statement signed by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dr Fabian Benjamin, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja, said the report was false.

The report had claimed that scores of candidates who sat for the UTME and were found wanting by the board were being reduced by 100 marks.

JAMB said that an investigation carried out discovered that the fake news emanated from a gang who coordinated from a town called Igarra in Edo state with affiliates in Lagos and other states.

The board described the act as fraudulent and meant to extort parents and candidates.

“A gang being coordinated from a town called Igarra in Edo State with affiliates in Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Abia, Anambra and Plateau states are circulating fake notice of impending reduction of UTME scores.

“This is with intent to extort and defraud parents and candidates.

“Candidates results would be received on their registered cell phones as soon as the ongoing scrutiny of the examination centers are completed and publicly announced.

“Only the fraudulent candidates or parents stand being defrauded on this matter,” the board said.

NAN recalls that Benjamin had in an interview on Sunday nwarned candidates not be carried away by rumours and misleading information in some sections of the media, especially the social media.

He also said that the board distances itself from such rumours about releasing results of candidates of the just concluded UTME and steps to check these results as being speculated.

NAN reports that the 2019 UTME was conducted nationwide from April 11 to 18.

More than 1.8 million candidates registered for the examination.

  • Why we are yet to release UTME results, by JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Wednesday explained why it had not released the results of the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

The board said it discovered that some candidates who wrote the examination engaged in massive fraud and impersonation, putting their results in doubt.

JAMB’s Head of Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, stated this in an interview in Abuja on Wednesday.

He said the board has started screening the results of all the candidates who wrote the examination and would release them as soon as it finished the exercise.

Benjamin said: “We will not release the results in a hurry. We will do a lot of crosschecking and matchmaking to be sure that nobody that was engaged in illicit act go scot free.

“We will release the results as soon as we finish checking the results to ensure that all those ones that we caught in various illicit registration acts are properly dealt with and those that we could not arrest are withheld.

“We will release the results when we finish doing our screening. We are screening the whole results.

“We don’t have the numbers now but we won’t release any result until we are sure of the whole thing.”

He said the board has so far arrested over 100 persons for impersonation and other fraudulent practices during the examination.

According to him, the board would fish out anyone who was involved in sharp practices during the examination through their results and withhold them.

The JAMB spokesperson said: “We are picking them across the nation. As at today, we have picked up over a hundred candidates and we are still picking.

“Though we may not be able to pick all of them because of logistics problem and the state but what we are doing now for those we could not  pick who may have written the exam and gone, we are fishing them out true their result.”

Benjamin also said the board was investigating cases of biometric verification failure in some states.

He assured that the board would do the needful once it finished its investigation and found the reported cases to be genuine.

“We will not be able to say genuine now until we do our due diligence. We are investigating because I told you that we have cases of illicit registration and we discovered that some of them created some scene when they discovered that their time for the exams clashed and they could not write the exam.

“We are giving everybody the benefit of doubt. We will look at all the perimeters and ensure that no one whose case is actually genuine suffers injustice.

“When we finish our exams we will be able to look at the whole thing (biometric issues),” he added.

He added that the board’s suspension of some Computer Based Test (CBT) centres nationwide has not affected the candidates.

  • JAMB registrar knocks private varsities for aiding corruption

Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Is-haq Oloyede has lambasted some private universities in the country for aiding academic corruption and decadence.

He accused some private university operators for going against many laws guiding university operations in the country.

Oloyede spoke in Abuja on Monday at the opening ceremony of a two-day summit on Nigerian private universities with the theme: “Private University Education Delivery in Nigeria; challenges and opportunities” organised by the National Universities Commission.

He explained that the purpose of opening up the university space by the Federal Government to private operators seems to be defeated because of some of the sharp practices operators of private universities undertake.

He said: “Government opened up the space few years ago for private operators to come complement government effort in providing university education to Nigerians, but it seems like the aim is gradually being defeated.

“When you visit some private universities, you will be ashamed for Nigeria. From the structures, you will know that something is wrong.

“If you take a deeper look, you will discover more decadence and rot in their operations. Some of the proprietors choose to run the universities like a family business and it ought not to be so.”

The JAMB registrar explained that only Vice Chancellors are recognised by law as being in charge of day-to-day running of the university.

According to him, every other person with ceremonial titles plays supportive roles.

“If I were to be university proprietor, I will prefer to take the position of Chairman of the Council because of the control power attached to that office,” he added.

NUC’s Executive Secretary, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, said the commission was currently processing about 303 new applications for the establishment of new private universities.

He said 208 out of the 303 applications are on step three in the processing of their applications, while 63 applicants representing 20.79 percent of the total applicants, were on step six having only submitted their completed application forms and strategic documents and are waiting first verification visit.

He added that 30 applicants, representing 9.9 percent were on step eight and have had first verification visit conducted to their proposed university campuses.

The Minister of education, Malam Adamu Adamu, said the running of a private university was a serious business which required greater discipline.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Sonny Echono, the minister urged private universities to address the major challenges militating against their operation, which he identified as staffing, poor or non-implementation of university governance arrangement, excessive proprietor influence, inadequate funding among others.
