2018 UTME: JAMB registers 1.65m, vows to fight corruption

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board ( JAMB) has successfully registered 1, 650, 547 candidates for the 2018 Unified Tertuary Matriculation Examination ( UTME ).

The board disclosed this in a statement signed by its Head of Media, Dr Fabian Benjamin, and made available to our reporter on Tuesday in Abuja.

It can be recalled that the board commenced the 2018 UTME registration on Dec.6, 2017 and closed on Feb. 11, after extending the registration for five days.

According to him, a total of 1,662,818 candidates paid and obtained the epins, while 1,650,547 had successfully registered for the 2018 UTME, at the close of pin vending.

Benjamin, however, urged the public to note that “all candidates who had paid and obtained pins but could not successfully register as at the close of sale are allowed to quickly do so within 24 hours.”

This, he said, was necessary as it would not entertain complaints afterwards from those who are unable to do so.

The spokesman emphasised that the continuation of the registration process was for only the candidates, who had initiated registration processes, paid and procured the registration e-pins but could not register as at the close of sales.

” Take note that candidates are not to generate any profile code for the purpose of 2018 UTME registration as doing so would have no effect and a waste of time and resources, ” he said.

Meanwhile, on the snake issue, the Board maintained that there was “no hiding place for any form of criminality to thrive in the running of the its activities.

“The Board would deploy all available resources to arrest and prosecute any one found undermining the integrity of the Board, irrespective of who is involved.”

Benjamin recalled that the Prof. Ishaq Oloyede led management had, on assumption of duty, embarked on a tour of JAMB state offices to ascertain financial stand and general operations.

He said some of the reforms introduced by Oloyede on assumption of office in 2016, included the recommendation of an end to the use of scratch cards, replacing it with more efficient and effective modes of pin vending.

“UTME candidates before now, purchased scratch cards from our offices nationwide and designated centres to gain access to the Board’s website for either registration or other essential services.

“It was in the process of the routine audit and other checks of state offices account and activities that an official incharge of the Benue state office of the Board was found wanting.

“This happened in an effort to give an accurate account of the proceeds realised from the sales of the cards.

“We are not going to take lightly our fight against corruption no matter who is involved.

“We are going to unravel, arrest and prosecute this alleged mysterious snake, just as we are going to bring to book, any of our officers or stakeholders who are caught in any activity not in line with the Board’s policies.

“A number of persons have indeed been discovered to have misappropriated funds belonging to the Board and the one at hand currently is one of such numerous cases of misappropriation in the state offices.

“We are out to carry careful scrutiny of government funds, as well as block all leakages and loopeholes, ” Benjamin said.

He further explained that the officer in question in its Benue office and many others states, found in similar situations had diverted the fund before the assumption of office of the presnt Registrar.

“However, the Board reiterates that the management is working assiduously to arrest and hand over to the appropriate quarters, the said “snake” that swallowed N36 million and a host of other monies in its system.

“The Board also has deployed machineries in its bid to fight corruption, infractions, and admission malpractice, financial misappropriation in a total and comprehensive manner,” he said.

According to him, in JAMB, we have nothing to hide, we run an open door system where the public must have an unfettered access to information, be it positive or negative, whether in the present or past.

  • JAMB extends registration by five days

JAMB extends registration by five days

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has extended registration for the unified tertiary matriculation examination till Sunday 11, by 12 midnight.

The board said registration for Direct Entry candidates continues.

JAMB Head of Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, made the announcement in a statement after a meeting with directors of the agency on Tuesday, in Abuja.

The board advised candidates to use the period to complete their registration as request for further extension would not be entertained.

The statement reads: The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) announces the extension of registration for 2018 UTME till midnight of Sunday, 11thFebruary, 2018.

“JAMB as a responsive organization has taken the decision albeit with great hesitation to accommodate candidates who failed to register between the two months window period that ended at midnight of Tuesday, 6th February, 2018.

“The failure of these candidates to register is unfortunate and the board hastens to add that this culture of impunity will not be tolerated and indeed penalty may be imposed for late registration in future.

“UTME candidates are therefore strongly advised to take advantage of the extension to register as request for further extension would not be entertained.”

Earlier, JAMB registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede had told reporters that a total of 1,451,691 million candidates had registered for the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, while 39,663 candidates were for the Direct Entry.

He stated this when he received the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu.

The examination is expected to hold on March 7 across 649 computer based test centres.

  • UTME 2018: JAMB warns telecom firms against multiple charges

UTME 2018: JAMB warns telecom firms against multiple charges

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has urged telecommunication companies to stop collecting multiple charges from candidates attempting to register for next year’s unified tertiary matriculation examination (UTME) and direct entry (DE) examination.

The board’s Head of Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, made the appeal in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

He said the multiple charges is being carried out by telecommunication companies enlisted to provide profile code creation services through sending and receiving of SMS.

According to him, telecom firms are supposed to charge candidates N50 per SMS, noting that candidates are being made to pay multiple charges due to poor network or processing failure.

Dr. Benjamin advised the telecom service providers to stop the multiple charges and stick to the agreement reached with JAMB.

According to him, candidates who are victims of these multiple charges are to raise a complaint support ticket on support.jamb.gov.ng for redress and further action by the board.

The statement reads: “The attention of the Joint admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has been drawn to multiple SMS charges on candidates phone numbers attempting to register for the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Direct Entry (DE) by telecommunications companies enlisted to provide Profile code creation services through sending and receiving of SMS.

“The telecom companies are to charge only 50 Naira per SMS to use the service.  Candidates are made to repeat these SMS commands several times either due to poor network or processing failure leading to rapid response(s) after the command is sent. The Board therefore advises telecom service providers to stop the multiple charges and stick to the agreement reached with the Board.

“The Board would insist on a refund by any Telecom that continue to charge these candidates twice.  We are mindful of the nation’s network challenges and does not expect the candidates to pay for the Telecoms infrastructural difficulties.”

Meanwhile, JAMB has faulted claims by the Colleges of Education Academics Staff Union (COEASU) that it (board) placed universities over and above Colleges of Education in the choices for candidates seeking admissions into tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

COEASU, in a communique had claimed that the board placed more priority in terms of choice by making universities first (1st) choice and Colleges of Education third (3rd) choice which  is responsible for making colleges of education a dumping ground and less attractive as more brilliant candidates would have chosen universities first.

“The Board wishes to correct this erroneous impression. Our advertisement typically, including this year, request candidates to make any institution as their first choice, Colleges of Education inclusive.

“Our caption has always  been ” Order of choice of Institutions : Every candidate is to note that the 1st choice can be a College  of Education, University, Innovation Enterprise Institution…” This was made clear to COEASU during their visit with copies of our adverts provided to them.  It is strange to the Board for COEASU to issue such a misleading communique.

“We have never placed any candidate(s) nor advice candidates on the choice of institution as it is the candidates’ volition to determine which institution to pick as their first choice and also which course to study. Candidates are at liberty to choose any institution they desire,” the statement said.

JAMB said it was baffled that COEASU could issue such a misleading communique regarding the matter.

The statement added that the 2018 application documents published in the national dailies “are clear, self-explanatory and devoid of any priority or preference as alleged by COEASU.”

Atiku ‘s defection from APC, UNILORIN fake admission list dominate Google search

The defection of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar from the All Progressives Congress ( APC ) and the University of Ilorin fake admission list dominated searches on the internet search engine, Google, this week.

Mr Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google’s Communications and Public Affairs Manager, Anglophone West Africa, disclosed this in a dispatch on Thursday in Lagos.

According to him, this week’s top trending search terms on Google Nigeria were dominated by both foreign and national new items.

“Abubakar, on Tuesday resigned from the ruling APC and plans to seek the opposition Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) presidential ticket to run for President in 2019.

“In his statement of resignation, he cited maltreatment by the party and the failure of the party to live up to the expectation of Nigerian youth as one of the major reasons for his resignation.

“Interested Nigerians raced to Google search to read his full statement of resignation,’’ Kola-Ogunlade said.

The Google manager said that the University of Ilorin came on the search light when a fake admission list was circulated on the social media.

“The management of UniIlorin has urged candidates seeking admission into the institution for the 2017/2018 academic session to patiently wait for the release of the authentic admission list by the Institution.

“The university in a statement on Tuesday said that its attention had been drawn to a fake admissions list currently circulating on social media, and urged students not to fall prey to admission fraudsters.

“The institution has directed students to check their Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board ( JAMB ) portal for admissions’ updates.

“Concerned students raced to Google to search for more information about the anticipated admissions list,’’ he said.

Kola-Ogunlade said that the rhythm and blues singer, Bankole Wellington and wife, Nollywood actress, Adesua Etomi trended when Banky W mistakenly posted picture of his naked wife on social media.

“On Nov. 25, R&B singer, Banky W and Nollywood actress, Etomi tied the knot in a ceremony held in Cape Town, South Africa.

“A day after, Banky W wanted to give a shout-out to his fans, by showing them their honeymoon lodge and Zebra right outside his bedroom window but, unknown to him he posted an image on social media which had his naked wife in the background.

“The image went viral before the mistake was noticed. Banky W deleting the image has not stopped fans from searching for more details, making ‘Banky W’ a top trending search term on Google,’’ he said.

On the international scene, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle engagement got people’s attention online.

“The Prince of Wales, Charles announced the engagement of his second son, Prince Harry to his American girlfriend, actress Meghan Markle on Monday at Kensington Palace.

“The happy couple who will tie the knot by spring next year granted their first interview as an engaged couple to the BBC, where Prince Harry described how he proposed to Meghan.

“Since the announcement, controversy has arisen about Meghan’s background, which made her name a top trending search term on Google this week,’’ he said.

Kola-Ogunlade said that the Brazilian professional footballer, Robson de Souza, commonly known as Robinho, was sentenced to nine years in prison after being found guilty of gang rape.

He said that the Brazilian striker was sentenced by a court in Milan for being one of a six-people involved in the assault of a 22-year-old woman at a Milanese nightclub in 2013.

Kola-Ogunlade said that Robinho’s current club, Atletico Mineiro, had declined to comment on the sentence, stating they would only speak through the team’s lawyers, if necessary.

The news of Robinho’s sentence has made his name a top trending search term on Google, he said.

Google Trends launched in May 2006, allows one to see how popular, search terms and its demography have been over time on Google.

  • JAMB begins construction of 500-seat CBT centre in Benin

JAMB begins construction of 500-seat CBT centre in Benin

Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo on Friday laid the foundation stone for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board ( JAMB ) 500-seat Computer-Based Test ( CBT ) Centre in Benin.

The governor said at the event that centre would add to the state’s education industry.

He said that the state had been known for hosting Federal Government institutions and, thus, its decision to partner with JAMB to have the centre in the state.

“We saw it as our responsibility to our people and the Federal Government to have a South-South Zonal Office and a CBT Centre in the state and we had to do all within our means to get a land for the project,” he said.

The governor gave assurance of power supply to the centre and construction of access roads to the centre in 2018.

He commended the Federal Government for releasing funds for the project, and hailed JAMB for introducing CBT which, he said, had helped to reduce examination malpractice.

Responding, the Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, commended Obaseki for promptly securing a parcel of land for the centre.

Oloyede said that JAMB decided to have a CBT centre in Benin in view of the growing number of candidates sitting for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination in the state capital.

“Benin is the seventh in terms of JAMB examination enrolment and 22nd in terms of facilities available for candidates to sit for the examination.

“To solve the facilities need in the state, the Federal Government, is building this CBT Centre in the state,” he said.

The registrar gave assurance of more working ties with the governor who, he said, had much zeal to meet the education needs of Edo people.

Other dignitaries at the event include the Registrar of NABTEB, Prof. Ifeoma Isiugo-Abanihe; the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) of the University of Benin, Prof, Pius Iribhogbe, and the state Commissioner for Education, Dr Christopher Adesotu.

  • Dismiss reports on post-UTME cancellation – Adamu Adamu

Dismiss reports on post-UTME cancellation – Adamu Adamu

The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, has urged higher institutions and the general public to disregard social media reports that he has cancelled Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination ( Post-UTME ).

A statement by the Federal Ministry of Education on Wednesday in Abuja directed institutions to carry on with the conduct of the Post-UTME.

The statement was signed by Mrs Priscilla Ihuoma, Director, Press and Public Relations.

Ihuoma said that the minister also warned that institutions charging above the stipulated sum of N2000 for the exercise would be sanctioned.

“The attention of the Minister of Education has been drawn to a news report in the media claiming that the minister had issued a directive to universities to cancel the Post-UTME examinations already scheduled.

“The statement, according to the report, was issued by Mr. Ben Goong, Deputy Director of Press.

“The Ministry would like to assert emphatically that the report is completely false and without foundation; Minister therefore urges universities to go ahead with their Post-UTME arrangements as earlier planned.

“Mr. Goong, who purportedly issued the statement, ceased to be a staff of the Ministry since November, 2016.

“The attention of the minister has also been drawn to some of the institutions who are charging more than the stipulated N2, 000.’’

Ihuoma said that the minister viewed it as an act of insubordination and emphatically redirected that every institution that violated the directive would be made to face disciplinary action.

She said that the minister directed such institutions to refund to the students immediately as Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board ( JAMB ) had been directed to compile list of violators for appropriate sanctions.

“The ministry also urges the media to always endeavour to crosscheck facts with the relevant officials of the ministry before publication, particularly when such sensitive matters of national importance are involved.”

  • Wake up Nigerian Youths

    Wake up Nigerian Youths

According to Albert Einstein “No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it”. Unfortunately, that’s what we are doing. We made ourselves grumps that fail to give solutions.

I believe it is utterly due that we bring a significant portion of the youths of Nigeria to the sad reality that they are guilty with lack of depth and originality; their level of thinking is pedestrian (no offence).

They have remained at the aboriginal state of being – the same with their progenitors.

The primary responsibility of Universities, Polytechnics and other institutions of higher learning is to shape and mould their products (students) such that they stand out in the originality of their ideas.

Considering a few reputable international institutions of higher learning like Alexandria University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology ( MIT ), we can see a consistent pattern in the way their products leave indelible prints on the social, economic and political pedestals of the world.

However, due to issues of mismanagement, corruption and lackluster, especially amongst the tertiary institution’s management, they continue to reproduce half-baked and almost no competence graduates into the labour market.

Apart from the grotesque incompetence amongst the leaders in our nation, it is even more heartbreaking to know that the youths can hardly see beyond now; they seem to be infected with a myopic syndrome (shortsightedness) of vision…unable to see beyond today.

Globally, youths are breaking new grounds in medicine, technology, philosophy, mathematic and other significant field. On the contrary, a large number of our youths have become huge liabilities and disappointments.

There is hardly a country in the world where people love, celebrate and idolise their oppressors like Nigeria. We think we change governments but all we do is replace one oppressor with another.

Bearing in mind that we spend at least four (4) years in tertiary institutions, coupled with strike, yet, we are not fully accepted by the society to be competent and experienced enough to wield the wand of power.

The youngest person in the cabinet of this present government is 48 while the oldest is 68.

It is pertinent that we are reminded of our past leaders who lived a life of impact. Among them are the likes of Mt Mbu who became Foreign Affairs Minister at 23 and the first Nigeria chief Representative in USA, Washington Dc between 1959-1960. Also, Pat Utomi became a Federal Adviser at 27.

Presently, this age bracket as it stands today are no longer qualified to even be leaders of youth wings of Political parties; this age bracket is barred from aspiring certain Political offices.

The sad reality is that many youths within the above age brackets are still writing the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board ( JAMB ), West African Examination Council ( WAEC ), National Examinations Council ( NECO ) etc.

A bright future is not some event we fold our hands and expect to happen, but one that we are actively involved in its unfolding.

While other youths are carrying the destinies of their nations, we are busy in the “busyness” of carrying the bags of politicians.

To further drive home my point, in 2012, 19-year-old Proscovia Alengot Oromait was elected as a member of parliament. Now 24 years old, she is the youngest person ever elected to office in not only Uganda but the entire African continent.

The future will come regardless of what we do or don’t do; but how the future will come is totally dependent on what we do or don’t do.

  • NANS applauds JAMB over N5bn remittance to FG

NANS applauds JAMB over N5bn remittance to FG

The National Association of Nigerian Students ( NANS ) has commended the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board ( JAMB ) for remitting the sum of N5 billion to the coffers of the Federal Government.

NANS’ President, Mr Chinonso Obasi, in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, said such remittance from JAMB within a short period under the leadership of Prof. Is-haq Oloyede showed a great deal of probity.

Obasi said that he was in support of the Federal Government’s move to probe the former administrations of JAMB and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency ( NIMASA ).

He urged the Federal Government to extend the probe to other agencies.

The Federal Executive Council, FEC, presided by President Muhammadu Buhari recently ordered the probe of past heads of JAMB and NIMASA over poor remittances in the past.

The Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, told the FEC that JAMB for the first time remitted N5 billion to the government with a balance of N3 billion still to be remitted.

She said it was a big difference when compared to maximum N3 million per annum remitted in the past.

Obasi said that the remittance of such amount from a non-focal revenue generating agency of government underscored the importance of transparency in the administration and management of government business.

“The development is highly commendable and all heads of Federal Government agencies and parastatals should emulate the registrar of JAMB.

“I urge President Buhari to beam his eagle eyes on all other agencies of the Federal Government to ensure that all loopholes that encourage corrupt practices are prevented and blocked.

“Corruption is evil and the worst thing that can happen to a country in dire need of financial resources for development.

“I wonder why any right thinking person would choose to abuse public trust bestowed on him by engaging in corrupt practices, stealing public funds that can used in addressing other development challenges,’’ he said.

Obasi called on Nigerians occupying public offices to endeavour to be responsible and patriotic in the management of government businesses.

He reiterated his call for the inclusion of the association in anti-corruption fight in order to stamp out the scourge and channel resources to critical needs of national development.

He said that the association would reach out to Federal Government agencies with a view to fostering interaction and building leadership capacity for Nigerian students.

Admissions: Dutse Varsity approves 160 as cut-off

The Federal University, Dutse in Jigawa, has approved 160 cut-off point as its benchmark for the 2017/2018 admissions against the 120 set by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for universities in the country.

The university’s Registrar, Malam Bukar Usman, announced this in a statement issued in Dutse on Saturday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that JAMB had fixed 100 for candidates seeking admissions into polytechnics.

“The Management has approved 160 as the minimum benchmark for the 2017/2018 admission in the university,” he said.

He also announced the institution’s cut-off points for programmes in the three Faculties of Agriculture, Arts/Social Sciences and Faculty of Sciences.

  • 120 UTME cut-off mark will encourage indolence – NANS

120 UTME cut-off mark will encourage indolence – NANS

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the recent downward review of cut-off marks for admission into tertiary institutions.

The President of NANS, Mr Chinonso Obasi in a statement on Thursday in Abuja, said that such downward review of cut-off marks would encourage indolence among candidates.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) had at a stakeholders’ meeting on Aug. 22, reviewed downward the cut-off marks for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The minimum cut off marks for admissions into universities was fixed at 120; polytechnics and colleges of education pegged at 100, while that of innovative enterprising institutes was fixed at 110.

The stakeholders said that institutions were at liberty to raise their cut off marks for admission above the minimum set by JAMB.

Obasi, however, argued that knowledge acquisition was a function of determination and hard work, adding aspiring students should not be encouraged to relapse into laziness.

“If over the years, students were able to work hard to meet cut off points, it does not make any logical sense to now lower the standard.

“The inability of any student to meet the cut-off points is a function of outright indolence that should not be encouraged.

“The general impression is that Nigerian graduates are not employable; therefore, lowering of standard will translate to a disastrous outcome in the future by churning out young people who cannot fit into the demands and expectations of the 21st century.

“Nigerian youths are intelligent and willing to learn but because of the enabling environment provided by tertiary institutions abroad, Nigerian students who attend school abroad always break records,’’ he said.

Obasi said that the 21st Century was driven by innovation and competitiveness, adding that lowering the entering level into tertiary institutions would kill young peoples’ zeal to step up performance.

The NANS president said that the challenges of the tertiary institutions in Nigeria were beyond the prospects of gaining admission.

He listed some of the challenges facing higher education as lack of modern day teaching facilities, low level of morale by the teaching staff, lack of adequate facilities and lack of enabling environment for effective learning.

Obasi urged concerned authorities to conduct a comparative study and analysis of policies from other climes that support functional learning in order to produce young people who would be globally competitive.
