We want action and not talk, ANPP tells Jonathan

The All Nigeria Peoples Party on Monday advised President Goodluck Jonathan to take action on major policies in his administration instead of talking.

It said Nigerians are fed up with the president’s “much talk which has not yielded any reasonable result.”

The party in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Hon Emma Eneukwu, accused Jonathan of not tackling corruption frontally.

    The statement reads:

“The All Nigeria Peoples Party viewed last Sunday’s presidential media chat, where President Goodluck Jonathan sought to engage the Nigerian citizens with regard to his work. Bearing in mind that the session was designed to candidly present the President’s progress, ideas and plans as the head of the Federal Republic with the utmost frankness and simplicity, our great party believes that President Jonathan only succeeded in obfuscating the minds of Nigerians.

“For starters, when asked about the ongoing constitution amendment, the President declined to take any position on the myriad of issues being raised for amendment in the constitution, with the self-serving explanation that it would be in the best interest of Nigerians to suggest areas in the constitution to be amended. However, we believe that it is the sign of a leader with ideas and direction to have a clear-cut legislative agenda, as a signature of his policy philosophy.

“Secondly, when he was reminded about his campaign promise of reducing poverty, President Jonathan quickly charged in to tell Nigerians that he never promised to reduce poverty, but rather told the populace when he was campaigning for their votes that he wanted to ‘‘create wealth’’. This is a clear political equivocation which is patently illiterate at best and self-indicting at worst. Nigerians are now left to wonder who Mr. President had set out to empower all along. This is because, for sure, creating wealth might actually be a metaphor for putting more money into the hands of his already rich party members and cronies, while leaving the poor of the nation in the hands of chance.

“Thirdly, The President tried to evade the question of his government’s lack of ‘‘enforcement’’ in the fight against corruption. But when he was forced to give an answer with specific reference to the Siemens and Halliburton cases, narrated that it was difficult for an incumbent government to fight the corruption carried over from a previous administration. We wonder whether he was trying to say that previous governments had vacated the State House with all the paraphernalia and powers of law enforcement and relevant documents needed to know what is the reality concerning these and many other clear cases of corrupt practices at the highest level.

“We believe that the international community that rated us abysmally low in the fight against corruption had already seen the insincerity of the present government in tackling corruption head-on. In fact, the foreign firms indicted in the corruption saga had been punished in their own countries, while this Peoples Democratic Party’s government tries to sweep everything under the carpet in order not to rock their gravy train of ‘‘chop I chop’’. We in the ANPP believe that President Goodluck Jonathan needs more than a media chat to communicate to the disillusioned masses his government’s vaunted vision, progress and plans. Action speaks louder than word.”

  • FG to support innovation – Jonathan

FG to support innovation – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan said on Monday that the Federal Government was working toward entrenching a system that would be the bedrock of innovations for the total transformation of the education sector.

The President said this at the opening of the National Education Innovations Exhibition in Abuja.

Represented by the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufa’i, Jonathan said that “in working towards the total transformation of the Nigerian system that is responsive to the needs of our society, one key thing that must be in our minds is that of entrenching a system that is bedrock of innovation.”

“In doing this, we must understand that innovation is not something that we start teaching our children, rather, it is an approach towards thinking differently that must be encouraged and ultimately nurtured.”

He said that his administration would continue to encourage and support innovations by individuals and organisations in order to enhance progress in the society.

The President added that in view of the challenges that the education sector faced, government had consistently improved budgetary allocations to the sector.

“Between 2010 and 2012, allocations to the education sector at the federal level increased from N234 billion in 2010 to N409 billion in 2012,” the News Agency of Nigeria quoted the president as saying during the exhibition.

He noted that government must be in a position to provide Nigerian youths with the opportunities and tools with which to enhance their skills and competencies in driving diverse sectors of the economy.

“We must also take every step to ensure that outputs of our educational institutions as well as innovations are exploited for the full benefit of the society.

“Government agencies must continue to encourage the commercialisation of innovations from individuals and institutions,” Jonathan noted.

In her address, Rufa’i, who expressed concern that most innovations remained in the institutions, said if educational innovations were not put to use, it would be to the detriment of the country’s national objectives.

    Jonathan assures on national growth

Jonathan gave the assurance in Sokoto at the 2012 Merit Awards Ceremony organised by the state government, saying the transformation agenda of his administration would be pursued to a logical conclusion.

The president, who was represented by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Alhaji Bello Sali, said the Federal Government was making efforts toward resolving the security challenges in the country.

He stressed the need for Nigerians to regard peace and unity of the country as top priority, considering that,” without peace, the nation will never progress and prosper.”

Governor Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto State said the award was instituted to honour deserving men and women of integrity.

“Nigerians must renew their commitments to country and be determined to confidently face the future with hope.

“The people we are honouring today are role models in the state and the country in general,” the News Agency of Nigeria quoted governor as saying at the event.

The National Chairman of PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, represented by his Deputy, Dr. Samson Jaja, commended the state for being,” the home of the party.”

Tukur expressed happiness over the peace in Sokoto State, saying “this is the only state in the country that free education is provided to non- indigenes.”

  • Bayelsa pensioners petition Jonathan

Frustrated pensioners in Bayelsa State have called on President Goodluck Jonathan to help ensure the immediate payment of their pensions and gratuities, even as they lament the death of 20 of their members  in the course of their seemingly endless wait.

The pensioners, who spoke as members of Nigeria Union of Pensioners, said they have gone through various humiliations and gave two weeks ultimatum to  the state government to pay their outstanding gratuity, amounting to about N3.5billion.

But the Bayelsa State Government has said it was doing everything possible to meet the demands of the pensioners and asked them to be patient.

The chairman of the state chapter of the union,  HRH Emmanuel Namatebe, and his members, had in a press conference, told journalists that the state government was not adhering to the pension laws.

Namatebe noted that  pensioners in the state had expected Governor Seriake Dickson to act in accordance with the laws  of  pension, especially as a lawyer and former lawmaker.

“As a legal practitioner and a former lawmaker, he ought to have identified with section 210 sub section 3 of the 1999 Constitution, which states that pensions shall be reviewed every five years or together with any state Civil Service salary review which ever that is earlier,”’the Chairman said.

While lamenting that  they are fed up with the flimsy promises of government over the payment of the areas, the pensioners vowed: “We are giving government end of November to pay or else we will seek redress in the law courts.”

The pensioners appealed to Dickson and President Goodluk Jonathan to intervene to fasttrack the payment of their backlog of arrears and gratuities, well as thirty months salary arrears owed to some primary school retirees.

But Dickson, who responded to the myriad of allegations from the pensioners through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Markson Iworiso, stated that government was very much concerned with the plight of the pensioners. According to him, this led to the setting up of a committee by the government to look into the matter. He, however, said  there are fictitious names on the list of pensioners, adding that government  was working hard to ensure that only genuine pensioners  are paid.

The protesting pensioners carried placards with inscriptions like, “Pay us our gratuity before we die,” “Retirement shouldn’t be a course,”’ “Respect our age as senior citizens,”’ and “What goes  around must come around, your time is coming.”

  • Jonathan, Mark, Tinubu others mourn

    Jonathan, Mark, Tinubu others mourn

Tributes have continued to trail yesterday’s death of eminent jurist, Justice Kayode Eso.

In a message by Dr. Reuben Abati, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, President Goodluck Jonathan described the death of the retired Justice of Supreme Court as a great national loss, adding that the President received news of the death with sadness.

“Eso was an eminent jurist, a courageous judge and consistent advocate for an independent judiciary.

“His long and exemplary life was dedicated to the service of law and order, and the dispensation of true justice, equity and fairness to all.’’

The president, on behalf of himself and the Federal Government, extended heartfelt condolences to the Eso family, their friends, associates and the government and people of Osun State, urging them to take solace in the fact that Eso would forever be remembered as a very bold, fearless and courageous judge who contributed enormously to establishing the independence of the judiciary.

“Members of the legal profession owe a debt of gratitude to the late Eso for his immense legacy of learned, erudite and seminal judgments, prodigious writings and major interventions in national debates.

“He urged members of the bar and bench to emulate the dedication, discipline, integrity and activism that Eso exemplified, even up to old age.’’

In his message, Senate President, David Mark, described the death of the Supreme Court Justice as a monumental loss to the nation, especially the Judiciary.

Mark, who reacted to the death of the foremost jurist, lamented that the country has lost one of the best and fertile minds in the judiciary.

A statement by the Special Adviser (Media) to Senate President, Kola Ologbondiyan, quoted Mark as saying that Late Eso was one of the proponents of the legal reforms that ushered in the era of dignity and the independence of the nation’s judicial system.

“As a legal officer and jurist, Eso was a voice for the voiceless. He defended the defenceless and was there for the oppressed.

“He was forthright and a distinguished officer. Nobody doubted his integrity and where he stood on national issues were clearly unambiguous. He was a patriotic Nigerian.”

National leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, said the death of Justice Kayode Eso has left a gaping hole that can never be filled in the Nigerian judiciary.

“Nigeria has lost in Justice Eso a golden heart and an irrepressible soul burning with justice, fairness and equity. He packed so many good traits: scholarship, character, modesty, boldness, honesty, integrity and candour. He was the quintessential judicial role model,” he said.

Tinubu called on the Eso family to be comforted, saying that their patriarch was a Nigerian gift to the Justice universe.

“His loss is no doubt painful. But you must rejoice in this gift to the world. Even as you grieve, you must thank God for this rare gift, who has nevertheless, been called by his creator, after he had lived to a ripe old age,” he said, adding that Justice Eso was one of the “classical,” justices in the golden age of Nigeria’s Supreme Court.

“Our Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, once famously declared that justice was the first condition of humanity. But Justice Esho was one of those that ensured, through his wisdom and rigour of judicial pronouncements, that basic justice never escaped the average Nigerian, even if he served for most part under military rule. He ensured that justice was done, even if the heavens would fall.”

Tinubu described Justice Esho as a patriot-guide, who by the instrumentality of the law, pointed his compatriots to the right way, and insisting on the rule of law.

“Justice Eso never shirked his judicial responsibilities, even when the powers-that-be were involved. His minority judgment over the 1979 presidential election, in which he rejected the latter day idea that two-thirds of 19 states could be anything than 13, and nullifying President-elect Shehu Shagari’s election.”

Tinubu said Justice Eso was one of the justices that fired his administration in Lagos State to institute far-reaching judicial reforms, aimed at increasing access to justice and fastening the pace of the courts and ensuring fairness for all. He therefore called on all to preserve his legacy, but added: “We can only do that if all our judicial officers rededicate themselves to the cause of justice. That is the only way we can preserve the Esho legacy and make our country truly great.”

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also extolled the extraordinary virtues of integrity of the Late Justice Kayode Eso.

Atiku, in a statement by his media office in Abuja, said the late legal luminary was notable for his courage and integrity because of his role in saving the image of the judiciary from the nadir of moral eclipse.

As a judicial activist, he said the late Justice Kayode Eso was always on the side of justice, regardless of whose ox was gored.

The former Vice President also recalled that almost every administration in Nigeria had invited Eso to head one judicial inquiry or another because of the recognition that he was a rare man of probity.

According to Atiku, “honour counted above money in the eyes of the late Eso and even his enemies must privately find themselves admiring his unique uprightness.”

He said Eso deserved a special place in the pantheon of Nigeria’s judicial heroes and that judges and lawyers should imbibe his virtues to make our judiciary more vibrant, unbiased and fearless.

“Beyond science, climate change is also about the future of Africa and the survival of its citizens.
