PDP crisis: Jonathan insists political solution is way out

Former President Goodluck Jonathan sees no other way out of the current crisis tearing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into pieces than a political solution.

He declared yesterday at his Otuoke, Bayelsa State, his country home that a political solution remained the best option to resolving the logjam.

He therefore threw his weight behind the Governor Seriake Dickson-led Peace and Reconciliation Committee which first recommended the political option.

Jonathan played host to Dickson and members of the committee and received the panel’s report.

He urged the two sides laying claim to the leadership of the party to embrace negotiations, stressing that party affairs should be treated like a family matter.

He was not disposed to litigation over the matter.

He said: “I believe a political solution remains the best means of resolving the crisis in the party and that’s why the Dickson committee must be commended.

“No two parties go to court and come out smiling especially for a political party like the PDP that’s in the opposition.”

Jonathan insisted that courts should ordinarily have no business in deciding who should be the chairman of a political party.

The former president called on the factions to submit themselves to a political solution and expressed hope that it would finally rest the protracted crisis.

He lauded the Dickson committee for its good work, and particularly thanked the governor and his entourage for going round the country to meet with key stakeholders and leaders of the party to seek ways of returning peace to the PDP.

Jonathan expressed reservation over the use of courts to settle political matters, stressing that a political solution would ensure a win-win outcome for the warring groups within the party.

Handing over the report to Jonathan, Dickson said Bayelsa  State has benefited substantially from the PDP, declaring  that the party remains the only one that has given the position of President to Bayelsa, a minority.

He expressed Bayelsa’s indebtedness to the PDP, insisting that it is a thing of pride to work to ensure that the crisis in the party is finally resolved.

Earlier, Abba Gana, a member of  the PDP  Board of Trustees and former minister of the Federal Capital Territory had  paid glowing tribute to Dickson for his  remarkable leadership quality and peacemaking efforts.

“He has pushed the process so relentlessly to the extent that the success of finding a lasting resolution of the crisis has become evident”, Gana said.

He also commended former President Jonathan for conceding defeat to President Muhammadu Buhari at the time he did.

He maintained that that singular move restored peace to Nigeria and averted a crisis that would have consumed a number of lives.

    Jonathan backs Dickson’s peace committee

Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday threw his weight behind the Governor Seriake Dickson-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Peace and Reconciliation Committee, insisting that a political solution remained the best option to resolving ongoing crisis in the party.

Receiving the governor and members of the committee in his country home at Otuoke, Ogbia local government area of Bayelsa State, Jonathan urged the contending parties to embrace negotiations as a way out of the current party challenge.

Jonathan, who made the remarks after receiving the report of the peace Committee, said party affairs should be treated like a family matter and settled out of court.

He commended the Dickson-led committee immensely for its good work, saying members of the committee deserved encouragement.

The former President particularly thanked the governor and his entourage for going round the country to meet with key stakeholders and leaders of the party to seek ways of returning peace to the PDP.

Jonathan expressed reservation over the use of courts to settle political matters, stressing that a political solution would ensure a win-win outcome for the warring groups within the party.

He said: “I believe a political solution remains the best means of resolving the crisis in the party and that’s why the Dickson committee must be commended.

“No two parties go to court and come out smiling especially for a political party like the PDP that is in the opposition,” he said.

Giving instances of people who went to court and at the end could not get the desired result, Jonathan insisted that courts should ordinarily have no business in deciding who should be the chairman of a political party.

The ex- President urged the parties to submit themselves to a political solution and expressed hope that it would finally resolve the protracted crisis.

  • Kinsmen battle to clear Jonathan of alleged favourtism, non-performance

Kinsmen battle to clear Jonathan of alleged favourtism, non-performance

It has been a disturbing week for Ogbia, the Local Government Area of former President Goodluck Jonathan in Bayelsa State. The council is angry over scathing remarks against Jonathan.

Though many of them are angry with and disappointed in Jonathan for failing to use his former position as number one citizen in the country to transform Ogbia, they would not stand at akimbo and watch people rain insults on Jonathan. To them, it is synonymous to robbing salt in an injury.

So, the kinsmen of Jonathan are boiling over a recent verbal attack on their brother by Chief Richard Kpodo, an indigene of Ofoni, Sagbama Local Government Area, Bayelsa State. Apart from Jonathan, Kpodo derided other high profile individuals and men of affluence from the council.

Kpodo, a former Security Adviser and former interim Chairman of the state’s chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) claimed in his statement that Jonathan presided over a worst administration in Nigeria. He further accused the former President of empowering only his Ogbia kinsmen while sidelining people from other local government areas in the state.

Kpodo said: “I challenge Dr. Jonathan to point at one individual in BayelsaState and even in Ijaw land in particular, that he can boldly claim to have empowered throughout his tenure outside his Ogbia enclave.

“This selfish tendency is not part of an Ijaw man, who today, is being recorded as having taken a slot at the Presidency and even being called names as his kinsmen. What an irony of fate!”

But the Ogbia has risen in Defence of Jonathan. Leading the Ogbia voice is Chief Samuel Ogbuku, a former Chief of Staff to former Governor Timipre Sylva and chieftain of the APC.

Ogbuku, on behalf of the Ogbia people insisted that Jonathan meritoriously served the nation as president to all  and never acted as a sectional leader. He described the accusation of non-performance against Jonathan as misleading, unacceptable and a blackmail.

Ogbuku, a Deputy Paramount Ruler of Ayakoro community said Kpodo’s spurious claims were designed to cause commotion in Ijawland. Specifically, he said Kpodo wanted to pit the Ijaw against one another following his imputations that the former President favoured only his Ogbia people.

According to him Kpodo’s claims were wicked and sponsored by moneybags on a mission to pull down the personality of their brother.

He said: “We need to remind Kpodo and those beating the shameless drum for him to dance that President Jonathan was a President to all Nigerians and not a president of Ogbia or Bayelsa State.

“He is a symbol of pride to the Ijaw people and the entire Nation. Could Kpodo have forgotten this early that President Jonathan got accolades for his feat in office both here in Nigeria and from the international community?

“Perekeme Richard Kpodo, in the said publication mischievously sought to portray the Ogbia people as the only beneficiaries of the Jonathan’s administration in the Niger Delta and supporting his warped argument with the few names of Ogbia sons currently going through an ordeal  in the hands of anti-corruption agents.

“Firstly, I may not be a friend to those he mentioned, but I can’t remember any court of law finding any of these Ogbia sons guilty since the law says an accused person is innocent until he is found guilty.

“So, for now, nobody has the right to pass judgement on them. Moreso, some of the persons the author mentioned are not under any kind of investigation, so why blackmail successful and purpose-oriented businessmen like Dr. Eruani Azibapu.’’

Ogbuku, further called on every true sons and daughters of Ogbia to speak up and set records straight to protect the collective image of the kingdom.  He said Jonathan remained a celebrated national and international leader, adding that any attempt to denigrate him must be resisted by the people of the Niger Delta irrespective of party affiliations.

He added: “I believe the Bayelsa people and Ijaw nation at large know the author better and we should be careful with divisive characters who tend to pitch one part of Ijaw against the other.

“People are free to criticize, as long as it is done constructively and not in a manner that tends to demonise others. I wish to state that I have nothing personal against the author even if some people would want me to align with his submissions just because the people being attacked are members of the People’s Democratic Party.

“On this matter, politics should not be an excuse to peddle lies and baseless allegations against hardworking Ogbia leaders and entrepreneurs. As an Ogbia Chief, I cannot hide under partisanship to allow unscrupulous characters to needlessly insult our people and heritage.

“In a democracy, the author has the right to talk about any subject or criticise and express his views. What is not acceptable is deliberately portraying Ogbia in bad light”.

  • Sylva’s ex-Chief of Staff tackles fellow APC chieftain over attack on Jonathan, kinsmen

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State and ex-Chief of Staff to former Governor Timipre Sylva, Chief Samuel Ogboku has tackled his fellow party man, Perekeme Richard Kpodo over his recent attack on some Ogbia sons, describing it as an affront on the peace-loving people of Ogbia land, by a mischief-maker.Chief Ogboku who is also the deputy Paramount Ruler of Ayakoro Community accused Kpodo of plotting to pitch one part of Ijaw against the other.

It would be recalled that Kpodo had in a recent newspaper article accused former President Goodluck Jonathan of favouring mainly his kinsmen from the Ogbia community through economic empowerment.Describing the claim as a blackmail and full of lies, Ogboku further dismissed it as a divisive intention meant to pitch Ogbia people against their brothers in the entire Ijaw nation.

On why he opted to take on a fellow APC Chieftain, Ogboku said: “I wish to state that I have nothing personal against the author even if some people would want me to align with his submissions just because the people being attacked are members of the Peoples Democratic Party. On this matter, politics should not be an excuse to peddle lies and baseless allegations against hardworking Ogbia entrepreneurs.

As an Ogbia Chief, I cannot hide under partisanship to allow unscrupulous characters to needlessly insult our people and heritage. In a democracy, the author has the right to talk about any subjector criticise and express his views. What is not acceptable is deliberately portraying Ogbia in bad light.”

He said further: “Perekeme Richard Kpodo, in the said publication mischievously sought to portray the Ogbia people as the only beneficiaries of the Jonathan’s administration in the Niger Delta and supporting his warped argument with the few names of Ogbia sons currently going through an ordeal in the hands of anti-corruption agents.

“Firstly, I may not be a friend to those he mentioned, but I can’t remember any Court of law finding any of these Ogbia sons guilty since the law says an accused is innocent untill he is found guilty. So, for now, nobody has the right to pass judgement on them. Moreso, some of the persons the author mentioned are not under any kind of investigation, so why blackmail successful and purpose-oriented
    businessmen.

Dr. Eruani Azibapu, who is not under any kind of investigation is a successful businessman from Ogbia, and we are thankful to God to have such a person in our community.“The author emphasized on the Refinery under construction, by Dr. Eruani. It should be made clear to the author in case he doesn’t know, that Dr. Eruani’s firm obtained the licence for a Private Modular Refinery under the current Government of President Mohammed Buhari.

This present administration further granted a 500MW power generation plant to Dr. Eruani’s firm, based on its proven capacity and credibility. So, as Ijaw people and Nigerians we are opportune to benefit from the President Buhari Administration just as other determined businessmen across the country benefitted from past administrations, including Alhaji Aliko Dangote who also got a licence for a refinery under the friendly policies of the Goodluck Jonathan administration. It is our belief that the mischief and blackmail of Kpodo are ill-conceived and should not be taken seriously.

“Secondly, it should be stressed that the anti-corruption fight of the present administration is not restricted to a particular zone and quite a number of personalities across the Nation are under investigation, and not just Ogbia people contrary to the impression being created by Kpodo. Even within the Ijaw ethnic nationality, a number of individuals are facing trials while some have been declared
wanted. Amazingly, some of these persons who are Kpodo’s kinsmen are facing weightier allegations than the salacious lies being circulated about the Ogbia people. So, the question is: what could be Kpodo’s intent in singling out Ogbia people for ridicule if his write up is not an affront on the community?

“Ordinarily, the publication would have been ignored especially coming from a character like Kpodo. However, doing that would be a cheap way of accepting the spurious claims and attack on the collective psyche of the Ogbia people. It is unacceptable for anyone to portray the Ogbia people as criminals and failures. In Kpodo’s jaundiced assessment, a man celebrated worldwide for his stewardship in government could be a failure. But we all know the truth which cannot be diminished by the rant of Kpodo. President Jonathan’s achievements are footprints that remain indelible. Need we remind Kpodo and those beating the shameless drum for him to dance to that President Jonathan was a President to all Nigerians and not a president of Ogbia or Bayelsa State. He is a symbol of pride to the Ijaw people and the entire Nation. Could Kpodo have forgotten this early that President Jonathan

PDP crisis: Jonathan, Wike in secret meeting

Former President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday held a secret meeting with Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike on the deepening crisis in the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Wike belongs to the Ahmed Makarfi faction of the PDP. It was believed Jonathan discussed the raging crisis with Wike, who is one of the main arrowheads.
Political strategists said the former president hid under project inspection to hold the strategic meeting.
The governor’s Special Assistant on Electronic Media, Simeon Nwakaudu, in a statement said Wike received Jonathan in the company of Chief of Staff Emeka Woke, Secretary to the Rivers State Government (SSG) Chief Kenneth Kobani and Edo State Chairman of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih.
Nwakaudu said: “Former President Goodluck Jonathan and Governor Wike had a closed-door meeting at the Government House, Port Harcourt, before the Dr. Jonathan left for another engagement  at Okrika.”
While inspecting Wike’s administration’s projects, the former president maintained the governor had performed well since assuming office 22 months ago.
Jonathan inspected the new amphitheatre, the Government House Chapel, Restored Brick House (former seat of power in Rivers State), New Corridor of Power and extended landscape.
Addressing newsmen after inspecting projects being executed by the Rivers governor, he insisted Wike was a worthy representative of the PDP.
He praised the Rivers governor for keeping the torch shinning by his exemplary  performance, which he said had justified his election by the people of Rivers state.
According to him: “I am part of Rivers State. I grew up in Rivers State and Bayelsa State was carved out of Rivers State. Also, my wife is from Rivers State.
“Today (yesterday) is my first day of visiting Rivers State, since Wike assumed office as governor. Twenty two months down the line, I am quite impressed with what I have seen.
“First, I heard so much. People have told me of the changes in Port Harcourt. I was told that I cannot even recognise the roads to where I used to live.
“As we drove into the city, I noticed that he has done very well in various areas.
“One thing I must commend Wike is that he has positive traits. I always believe that wherever you find yourself, add value.
Governor Wike has added value in Rivers State. He has done weål to show his signature.”
The ex-president also lauded Nigerians for appreciating his contributions to the nation’s development.
Wike noted the Old Brick House was restored with certain additions because of the need to preserve history of governance in the state.
The governor noted the new amphitheatre being constructed at the Government House, Port Harcourt would host high profile guests to visit Rivers state.
He pointed out that the new Government House, Port Harcourt chapel, which would host about 300 persons, would provide a venue for interdenominational Christian worship.
Wike thanked the former  president for visiting Rivers, while assuring him that he would continue to live up to expectations.

  • $1.6b Malabu Oil deal: Adoke names Obasanjo, Yar’Adua, Jonathan, others

$1.6b Malabu Oil deal: Adoke names Obasanjo, Yar’Adua, Jonathan, others

Former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice Mohammed Bello Adoke has said that three former Presidents endorsed the Settlement Agreement on the controversial $1.6billion Malabu Oil Block.

They are Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, the late Umaru Yar’Adua and Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.

Adoke said none of the three Presidents has disowned the agreement.

He listed ex-ministers who played key roles in resolving the conflict on the oil block. They are a former AGF and Minister of Justice Bayo Ojo,  former Minister of Petroleum Resources King Edmund Daukoru; ex-Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke and former Minister of Finance  Olusegun Aganga.

He said the recent actions of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) tended to impugn the Settlement Agreement.

He insisted that the Ministry of Justice, which he superintended, only facilitated the Settle Agreement.

The EFCC has filed charges  against Adoke,  a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Chief Dan Etete, a businessman, Aliyu Abubakar and eight others over alleged $801million bribe in respect of the auctioning of Malabu Oil Block.

The others are Shell Nigeria Exploration Production Company Limited;  Nigeria Agip  Exploration Limited; ENI SPA; Malabu Oil and Gas Limited; Ralph Wetzels(ex- Director of SNEPCO), Casula Roberto(Italian) whilst being the Director of AGIP; Pujatti Stefeno(Italian) while being the Director in AGIP; and Burafato Sebastiano(Italian).

But  Adoke, in a March 6 letter to Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mallam Abubakar Malami (SAN), asked the AGF to determine whether he had committed any offence for carrying out presidential approvals.

He asked Malami to tell Nigerians whether his predecessors in office from 2006 to May 2015 acted in the national interest when they brokered and implemented the Settlement Agreement.

He urged Malami to clarify to Nigerians the import of Section 5 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) with respect to the vesting of all the Executive powers of the Federation in the President to exercise by himself and or through his Ministers and appointees.

He said: “It will be recalled that the Terms of Settlement encapsulating details of the Settlement between the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) and Malabu Oil & Gas Limited (Malabu) was executed on 30th November, 2006.

“The Terms of Settlement, which was later, reduced into a Consent Judgment of the Federal High Court; Abuja was brokered by our predecessor in office, Chief Bayo Ojo, SAN and signed on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria by the then Honourable Minister of State, for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Edmund Daukoru, during the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo.

”When I assumed office on 10th April 2010, I inherited a Consent Judgment, which had undergone the scrutiny of three Presidents and Attorneys General. I was therefore restricted to the implementation of the Settlement as the issue of ownership of OPL 245 had already been resolved in favour of Malabu by the Terms of Settlement dated 30th November 2006 and the Consent Judgment of the FHC, Abuja.

“I also inherited an on-going Investor/State Arbitration at the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Dispute (ICSID) in which SNUD had initiated arbitral proceedings against the FGN claiming damages in excess of $2billion for taking back OPL 245 re-awarded to them when Malabu’s title was initially revoked by the FGN. SNUD’s claims were also premised on the fact that they had substantially de-risked the Block.

“Malabu also instituted Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/420/2003, before the Federal High Court (FHC), Abuja to enforce its claim to OPL 245. Although, the suit was struck out by the FHC, Malabu lodged Appeal No. CA/A/99M/2006 before the Court Appeal, Abuja, Division.

“During the pendency of the Appeal, an amicable settlement was entered into between Malabu and the Federal Government and in compliance with the Terms of Settlement executed by the Parties on the 30th of November 2006, OPL 245 was fully and completely restored to Malabu in consideration for its withdrawal of the Appeal. (Copy of the Terms of Settlement dated 30th November is attached as Annexure ‘A’)

”Apparently dissatisfied with the Terms of Settlement between the Federal Government and Malabu, SNUD commenced arbitral proceedings against the decision of the Federal Government to restore/re-allocate OPL 245 to Malabu at the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes in Washington DC, and made representations to government on the impending arbitration. It is instructive to note that SNUD’s claim before ICSID was in excess of US$2billion. It also commenced a suit against the Government before the Federal High Court, Abuja

“Although, several meetings were held between the Presidency, Ministry of Petroleum Resources, SNUD and Malabu, to resolve the dispute, no satisfactory outcome was achieved. Attempts were also made in 2007 to resolve the dispute by a Committee comprising the Honourable Minister of State, Petroleum Resources, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Minister of Energy, Group Managing Director, NNPC and DPR, during the administration of Late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, without success

“ To resolve all the contending claims in a satisfactory and holistic manner, due regard was given to the Terms of Settlement of 30th November 2006 which had been reduced to Orders of the Court, the underlying policy of encouraging the participation of indigenous oil and gas companies in the upstream sector of the oil industry and the fact that Shell had substantially de-risked Block 245.

“To accommodate all these interests, a Resolution Agreement dated 29th April, 2011 was executed wherein the FGN agreed to resolve all the issues with Malabu in respect of Block 245 amicably and Malabu also agreed that it would settle and waive any and all claims to any interest in OPL 245. (Copy of the Resolution Agreement is attached as Annexure ‘D’).

“ In furtherance of the Resolution Agreement, SNUD and ENI agreed to pay Malabu through the Federal Government acting as an obligor, the sum of US$ 1,092,040,000 Billion in full and final settlement of any and all claims, interests or rights relating to or in connection with Block 245 and Malabu agreed to settle and waive any and all claims, interests or rights relating to or in connection with Block 245 and also consented to the re-allocation of Block 245 to Nigerian Agip Exploration Limited (NAE) and Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCO).

Adoke insisted that the Federal Government and its agencies and officials only served as facilitators of the Settlement Agreement.

He added: “It is therefore quite evident from the foregoing that the role played by the Federal Government, its agencies and officials in relation to Block 245 was essentially that of facilitator of the resolution of a long standing dispute between Malabu and SNUD over the ownership and right to operate Block 245.

“At all times material to the resolution of the dispute, the Federal Government was not aware of any subsisting third party interest in Malabu’s claim to OPL 245 and neither did any person or company apply to be joined in the negotiations as an interested party.

”I wish to reiterate that the resolution of the lingering dispute over Block 245 was in furtherance of Government’s demonstrable commitment to attract investment in the oil and gas sector of the economy and encourage genuine investors (local and foreign) by creating the enabling environment for their business to thrive.

“ The Office of the Attorney General superintended over the process to ensure that the implementation was holistic by ensuring:

    (a)  that the requisite Presidential Approvals were sought and obtained;

    (b) that all the relevant MDAs such the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Ministry of Finance, the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) were involved in the resolution and final implementation of the Settlement;

    (c) that the relevant Agreements such as OPL 245 Resolution and Re-allocation Agreements were duly executed by line Ministers and Departments;

    (d) that the Signature bonus was duly paid to the Federal Government of Nigeria as required by law, and

    (e) that disbursements from the escrow account were jointly approved by the Federal Government and SNUD.”

Adoke urged the AGF to find out why he was singled out by the Economic and Financial Crimes for prosecution.

He said: “ In view of the foregoing, I anxiously want to know where I went wrong that I have been singled out by the EFCC for prosecution.

”I wish to use this medium to appeal to the Honourable Attorney-General of the Federation to be mindful of his overarching powers over public prosecution and the need to ensure that state institutions do not become persecutors or instruments in the hands of those pursuing personal vendetta.

“The Constitution and the traditions of our noble profession demand your oversight over public prosecution. Consequently, if you find that I had breached my Oath of Office or abused my office, please do not hesitate to bring me to justice.

“However, if it is the contrary, as I strongly believe, that certain individuals who had vowed to even scores with me are now being aided by state institutions such as the EFCC; I deserve protection from these unwarranted attacks and dehumanising treatment that I am being subjected to merely because I chose to serve my fatherland.”

Adoke faulted the filing of separate charges against him by the EFCC and asked Malami to speak out.

He said:  “As the Chief Law Officer of the Federation, you have a public duty to speak on this matter so that Nigerians would know whether I acted mala fide or abused my office in the entire transaction leading to the final implementation of the Settlement.”

  • PDP crisis: How far can Jonathan’s intervention go?

PDP crisis: How far can Jonathan’s intervention go?

Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s decision to help resolve the leadership crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised fresh hopes, but recent reactions of some stakeholders suggest the new moves may not go far, reports Assistant Editor, Dare Odufowokan

Following his defeat at the last presidential election, former President Goodluck Jonathan has not been very visible within his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Instead, he had kept a dignified silence over the affairs of the opposition party. Even as the party meandered from one leadership crisis to another, the former President, rather than interfere publicly, reportedly chose to watch as things unfold.

It would be recalled that Jonathan, shortly after leaving Aso Rock in May 2015, had announced to members of the PDP in particular and Nigerians in general, that he was taking a sabbatical from party politics. And for nearly two years, it appeared that the former President, with his silence and inaction over the crisis within his party, was still enjoying his sabbatical.

While his silence lasted, many members of the party opined that the party was suffering from Jonathan’s decision to watch while things go wrong. According to this school of thought, as the last President elected on the platform of the troubled party, the Bayelsa State-born politician is still the leader of the opposition PDP.

Consequently, much was expected from him by many people within and outside the party in the resolution of the crisis that is threatening to force the PDP into extinction barely two years after it left government at the centre. Many people called out to the former President to end his self-imposed political leave and do something about the crisis in his party.

Engineer Deji Doherty, a former Acting National Vice Chairman of the PDP in the South-West, while speaking on how best the PDP crisis can be resolved, urged Jonathan to break his silence and intervene as the leader of the party. The former governorship aspirant in Lagos State said those struggling to resolve the problems in the party today cannot do as much as the former President will do to bring peace to the PDP.

“I have said this before and I want to say it again, the major problem with PDP today is that the leader is quiet. I have been talking to a lot of people. I believe the problem is not only about Ali Modu Sheriff and Ahmed Makarfi. It is a rooted problem in the PDP, whereby you have leaders, who think about themselves and nobody else.

It is because we don’t have leaders, who are selfless in creating a democratic system within the party. You have leaders who want boys who will always do their bids. Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, the last president we had is the leader of the party no matter what anyone thinks. Governors are aspirants, who evolved through the party. They are members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party, so their voice must be heard, but they do not have to say that they are leaders of the party at the national level,” he said.

    And the man spoke

But a couple of weeks back, Jonathan broke his silence and offered to help resolve the problem within the troubled PDP, provided the warring factions are ready to give peace a chance in the interest of the party. Not only did he host the various factional leaders of the party, the former President offered to midwife a political solution to the lingering crisis.

Jonathan, who reiterated his readiness to remain active politically on the platform of the opposition PDP, said it is time for the party to put behind it the many problems bedeviling it and prepare to return to its winning ways. The former President said he is now ready to intervene in the crisis and help find a political solution to it.

True to his words, he quickly met separately with the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee and Senator Modu Sheriff leadership of the troubled party, as well as members of the Board of Trustees (BoT), led by Senator Walid Jibrin. At all the meetings, the former President canvassed for a political solution to the crisis.

The ex-President also met with State governors elected on the platform of the PDP at his office in Maitama, Abuja, as part of efforts to resolve the issues holding the party back. Governors of Ekiti, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Taraba, Cross Rivers, Abia, Ebonyi, Gombe and Bayelsa states were in attendance while Rivers State was represented by the deputy governor.

At the end of the meeting between the former President and the PDP governors,,  which lasted for about five hours, the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, announced that as a result of Jonathan’s intervention in the crisis, they have resolved to pursue a political solution to end the crisis.

Fayose said: “It is my pleasure to tell you that we are here at the instance of the former president. He is genuinely concerned by what is going on in the party. And he thought that an interactive session with the governors will go a long way to dousing tension. “We want to assure all our supporters that we believe in this party, we believe in the success of this party.”

A source also told The Nation, that “It was gathered that Jonathan, while discussing with the various stakeholders, had stressed that the easiest way out of the melee is for the party to organize a national convention where a new leadership will be elected for the party as soon as possible. And in line with this, he has been urging the two factions to be ready to willingly leave office soon.

“He made it clear that rather than for the party to continue in unending litigations, it is better that the two factional leaderships give way for a new executive committee that will emerge at a unity convention to be held as soon as possible. He made it clear that the two factional leaderships will have to give way for peace to reign in PDP.”

Not a few persons have praised the former President’s intervention in the crisis, with many believing that an end is in sight to the unending rancor that has held PDP by its jugular since 2015. To many, chieftains in the two factions should be too willing to cooperate with Jonathan and the governors in their bid to resolve the lingering crisis.

A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, representing Ojo Constituency, Hon. Victor Akande, who is a chieftain of the PDP, submitted that Jonathan’s timely intervention is exactly what the party needs as it prepares to give the ruling APC a run for its money at the 2019 general elections across the country.

”We thank ex-President Jonathan for this political solution. I am happy he heeded our call. Any PDP leader that claims to love the party will toe the line of peace. We should go for truce and no longer court. If our leaders have the interest of the party at heart, they should look forward to resolving crisis. Everyone should sit down and discuss. Jonathan should find the lasting solution to the party’s problems, he can do it,” he said.

But few days after the President’s swift moves appeared to be yielding positive results, questions about how far he can go to restore PDP to peaceful ways are popping up. This is due to some indications that the two factions may still find it difficult to work together to achieve the unity convention proposed by ex-President Jonathan.

Signs that Jonathan may have to do more than he has done if he intends to pull through his peace mission emerged after the Governor Seriake Dickson-led Reconciliation Committee of the party, submitted its report to the leaderships of the two warring factions, with the preposition that a national unity convention should hold on the 30th of June, 2017.

“The Convention Committee shall be responsible for the conduct of the elections to all national offices for the party, including the zoning of such offices. That as part of the sacrifice to be made in order to reposition the party, the Committee is of the view that all national officers who may claim that their tenure still subsists beyond the proposed convention are hereby requested to relinquish their claim in the interest of the party.

“For the purpose of the convention, all officers, elected at the ward, local, state and zonal levels before the first Port-Harcourt convention of 21st May of 2016, are deemed validly elected except for the election held in some states that were declared by NEC as inconclusive,” Dickson had stated while explaining the contents of the report.

Sadly for the embattled party, Sheriff and Makarfi have disagreed over the report. While Sheriff accepted the recommendations of the committee, though he said his faction will study it and make amendments where necessary, Makarfi rejected it, describing the report as a breach of the February 17 Appeal Court judgement, which reinstated Sheriff as the party’s National Chairman.

And while the Sherif faction mandated its National Organising Secretary, Okey Nnadozie, to begin preparation towards the proposed convention, indications emerged that the Makarfi faction may be toying with the idea of boycotting the convention. And public comments by the chieftains of the two factions have only widened the gap in the past few days.

Makarfi in a statement, during the week, stated that his faction’s National Caretaker Committee disagreed with the recommendations. He said: “I am shocked and disappointed that the Governor of Bayelsa made public presentation of a purported report approved or endorsed by us and other stakeholders as reported.

“The committee did not see any draft report, although Dickson promised to come with it. In any case, as personal advice I referred him to the organs of the party and the Goodluck Committee. Neither Senator Makarfi nor the Caretaker Committee has given or accepted any terms to or from anybody,” the statement added.

With these developments, not a few persons, within and outside the troubled party, are once again worried about what will become of the ongoing effort to save the opposition party from its self-inflicted crisis. And the question on most lips is whether the efforts of former President Jonathan will prove efficient enough to end the lingering leadership crisis.

Jonathan denies rejecting UK’s offer to rescue Chibok girls

The Office of the former President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday debunked claims that the last administration rejected an offer by British forces to rescue the kidnapped Chibok school girls.

A statement issued by Media Adviser to the ex-President, Ikechukwu Eze, reads: “Our attention has been drawn to a report that has been trending, without proper attribution, to the effect that the last administration rebuffed British offer to rescue the kidnapped Chibok school girls.

“We wish to promptly point out that nothing can be further from the truth, as Nigerians are conversant with the efforts made by the Jonathan administration towards rescuing the Chibok girls, especially in relation to collaborating with the international community, in the bid.

“We can confidently say that the lies in this report are self -evident. This is because the international press as well as the Nigeria media actively covered the multinational efforts and collaboration which involved some of the major powers deploying their crack intelligence officers to work with our own security operatives, and those of our neighbours.

“In the course of the mission, the international team, including members from Nigeria’s neighbours of Chad, Niger and Cameroun, met regularly with our own intelligence officers to plan and conduct their operations.

“In fact, the Jonathan administration was so genuinely supportive that the foreign powers involved were granted permission to overfly our airspace, while conducting the search and rescue missions.

“We would wish to recall that this collaboration was made possible following letters personally written by former President Jonathan to ex- President Barack Obama of the United States, President Francois Hollande of France, Mr. David Cameron, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, as well as personal contacts made to the Governments of Israel and China, seeking their assistance in the search for the abducted Chibok girls.”

Stressing that some people are playing politics with the issue of the Chibok girls, he said that such people will stop at nothing to further their interest.

He urged media houses to always cross-check their facts before rushing to publish false information, especially when being spread by those who want to unfairly promote their own pride, against the national interest.

  • Jonathan didn’t advise Sheriff to resign as chairman – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed a media report claiming that Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff was advised by former president Goodluck Jonathan to resign as the National chairman of the party.

The acting National Publicity Secretary to the Sheriff faction, Mr. Bernard Mikko, stated this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

The statement said the issue of resignation as the political solution has neither been discussed nor put up for consideration with former President and other stakeholders as reported in some media.

“As a law abiding citizen, Sheriff has been urging all stakeholders to make themselves available and offer advice on how to conduct the party’s national convention as soon as possible,” it added.

The stakeholders, according to the statement, include PDP governors; national and state assembly members and Board of Trustees (BoT) members.
