Jonathan: I didn’t back Sheriff for chair
Former President President Goodluck Jonathan said yesterday he did not endorse Senator Ali Modu Sheriff as National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
The former President’s media aide Ikechukwu Eze, in a statement said: “The issue of endorsement never came up in the course of the visit, not at the closed door session with Sheriff nor during the former President’s interview with newsmen”, the statement said.
Jonathan who repeatedly addressed Sheriff as “my chairman” during the visit, accused the media of infusing mischief in their report, stressing that he welcomed Sheriff to his house in line with a mediation role he was playing towards undying and strengthening the PDP.
According to the statement, the ex-president opened his doors to Sheriff upon the latter’s request, just as he had earlier done to the Makarfi-led caretaker committee members.
It added that the former President was prepared to broker more talks until the issues in the leadership of the PDP were finally resolved.
The statement added, “Indeed, it may interest you to know that after meeting with Sheriff, the former President also met with Senator Ahmed Makarfi, leader of the PDP Caretaker Committee, and the party’s Board of Trustees chairman, Senator Walid Jubril, later in the evening”.
It emphasised that as a peace-loving leader of the party, the former President’s interest was to help reposition the PDP to enable it play a constructive role in the affairs of the nation, in view of the imperative of deepening the nation’s democracy.
It added: “I wish to let those spinning this falsehood know that it just doesn’t add up to fly a contrived banner of endorsement in one breath, and in another, concede that the former President explained his commitment in meeting with different interest groups, towards resolving the differences in the party”.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the following are the former President’s exact words during the interview with newsmen, as had accurately been reported by most online and major national newspapers, as well as broadcast organisations”.
The statement quoted Jonathan’s statement shortly after meeting with Sheriff thus, “We (PDP) are not factionalised. We are one. We are solving our problems. There are bound to be differences in politics. It is the way we resolve these differences that make us human beings and that is what makes us leaders. I have met with Sheriff. And I have met with others. I will still meet with others, so that we will be able to do what is expected of us as a political party”.
The former leader yesterday also met with a group of former cabinet ministers who served at various times under his administration.
Led by a former Special Duties Minister Taminu Turaki, the ex ministers met behind closed doors with Jonathan for more than two hours.
Turaki told reporters after the meeting that they exchanged fruitful ideas on the way forward with the ex president on how to resolve the crisis in the party.
Turaki canvassed understanding by parties to the crisis, adding that internal mediation process was ongoing. According to him, leaders and elders of the party were alive to their responsibilities and the need to forge ahead.
. “Even after the Supreme Court must have given its verdict, we will still sit together to explore reconciliation options”, Turaki on behalf of his colleagues said.
Other ex-ministers who joined Turaki at the meeting included Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, Senator Bala Mohammed, Mr. Osita Chidoka, Mr. John Odey, Alhaji Ibrahim Shekarau and Alhaji Aminu Wali.
Police presence around the national secretariat of the PDP was increased yesterday.
Security cordon around the secretariat building was extended to the adjoining main road around the premises with police and other paramilitary operatives taking positions at strategic places.
Police and the Nigerian Civil Defence and Security Corps had their patrol vans stationed outside the deserted secretariat building, while citizens went about their daily activities unhindered.
The secretariat building was sealed in June 2015 at the peak of the leadership crisis in the party. -

I did not endorse Sheriff as PDP chairman – Jonathan
Former President President Goodluck Jonathan has denied reports that he endorsed Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff as National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Describing the report as false, the media aide to the former President, Mr. Ikechukwu Eze, in a statement on Tuesday, clarified that Jonathan did not endorse Sheriff during the latter’s visit to the ex- President on Monday.
“The issue of endorsement never came up in the course of the visit, not at the closed door meeting with Sheriff nor during the former President’s interview with newsmen,” the statement said.
Jonathan, who repeatedly addressed Sheriff as “my chairman” during the visit, accused the media of infusing mischief in their report, stressing that he welcomed Sheriff to his house in line with a mediation role he was playing towards undying and strengthening the PDP.
According to the statement, the ex -President opened his doors to Sheriff upon the latter’s request, just as he had earlier done to the Makarfi-led caretaker committee members.

Jonathan backs Sheriff as Makarfi vows to fight on
Governors, others insist on caretakers
Why we stopped meeting, by police
Former President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday endorsed Senator Ali Modu Sheriff as the National Chairman of the troubled Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
But the party’s key stakeholders, including governors, Board of Trustees (BoT) members, National Assembly Caucus and former ministers, passed a vote of confidence in the Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee.
Jonathan’s endorsement came amid protests by the Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee and other critical organs of the party against the Appeal Court’s ruling that affirmed Sheriff’s chairmanship.
Receiving Sheriff and members of his team at his Maitama, Abuja residence yesterday, Jonathan, who kept addressing Sheriff as “my chairman”, said there were no factions in the party.
Speaking after a closed door meeting with Sheriff and his team, Jonathan said: “We are not factionalised. We are one. There are bound to be differences in politics. We cannot run away from that.
“It is the way we resolve these differences that makes us human beings and that is what makes us leaders. I have met with Sheriff. And I have met with others. I will still meet with others, so that we will be able to do what is expected of us as a political party.”
Also speaking after the meeting, Sheriff said his mission was to unite the party and place it on a sound footing to provide credible opposition to the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government.
Saying he was still consulting, Sheriff stressed that there could be only one national chairman, adding: “We are putting everything together to ensure that the party is united.”
“We are not fighting and this is no time to join issues with people. We want everybody to come back to the party. Very soon I will get back to you when I finish my consultations. I won’t tell you anything before I finish consultations.”
He added that the constitution of the party does not recognise a caretaker committee.
“There is only one PDP and there is only one national chairman. A group of people has the right to sit and discuss as only a group of people but not as PDP. If I go down to their level to exchange words with them, then I would not be different from them.
“We don’t have anything like caretaker committee in our party. As father of the party, I will make sure everybody is united. I will make sure that everybody gets what they want in PDP.
“By the time I finish my convention, Nigerians will know that we mean well for the party,” Sheriff said.
At the enlarged stakeholders’ meeting convened by the Caretaker Committee, party chieftains took turns to denounce Sheriff, vowing to pursue the leadership tussle to the Supreme Court.
Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu decried what he described as the manipulation of vital institutions of democracy and radical decline of democratic freedoms in the country.
Ekweremadu, who also attended the meeting of the Makarfi camp, said the solidarity of all key organs and bodies of the PDP towards the Makarfi-led PDP National Caretaker Committee showed that “it is not the hood that makes the monk”.
Peeved by the sealing of the International Conference Centre (ICC) , the venue earlier announced for the meeting, Ekweremadu said “such flagrant manipulation of critical institutions of democracy was not only dangerous, but bad news for the nation’s democracy”.
He said: “We are aware that all the institutions of democracy are being manipulated and harassed in this country. The National Assembly and the press are not left out.
“The INEC (Independent National Electoral Commission) has been captured and now a part of the All Progressives Congress. Our judiciary is being insulted and assaulted everyday. Their houses are being attacked very late at night and the judges are being harassed.
“So, we are not surprised at what we are seeing today (sealing of meeting venue). But what remains is for us to remain resolute.”
He expressed displeasure at what he described as the rise in political persecution in the country and enjoined PDP members to remain strong, as the party would work with Nigerians to restore true democracy and hope to the people.
The lawmaker urged party members to remain resolute and protect the soul of the PDP and the nation’s hard-won democracy, insisting that the party leaders were made by the party faithful, and could never be imposed from outside.
He continued: “If you look around this room, you will see a lot of people who are being harassed, persecuted, and taken to court. What is their offence?
“They claim they allegedly received stolen property, yet nobody has been arraigned for the actual stealing. As a lawyer, I know that if you are being arraigned for receiving stolen property, you must first of all arraign the man who stole the property. That is not so in our own case. Is that democracy?”
“We have heard there was a judgment in Port Harcourt. Now, those who benefitted from the judgment, where are they? Are they with our former ministers? Are they with our National Assembly members? Are they with our governors? Which organ of the party are they with or is with them? The truth is that it is not the hood that makes the monk”.
“I believe that with determination and sticking together, we will triumph and Nigeria will be better for it”.
Ekweremadu also decried the worsening economic conditions in the country, noting that all APC promises had been kept in the reverse order.
“They told us that one U.S dollar would be one naira when they take over. Has that happened? Today, our currency is the worst currency in the whole of Africa.
“Is that the type of democracy we looked forward to? I can see a situation where the price of oil is going up and the value of naira is going down. What type of economics is that?”.
Makarfi vowed that Nigerians had not seen the end of the matter, adding that the Court of Appeal judgment that affirmed Sheriff as chairman was faulty.
“As it happened in Port Harcourt, so it happened here. This is not the last. It’s an aberration to stop people from associating. When PDP was in power, it could have stopped the formation of the APC. The principle that people should be given a choice to participate in democracy should be encouraged.
“We know what happened in Port Harcourt when the court gave its verdict. The type-written judgement is the main judgement but the hand written judgement, we don’t know what happened.”
Makarfi said the Caretaker Committee had approached the court for an injunction to allow the committee to continue pending the determination of the cross appeal at the Supreme Court.
A communique issued at the end of the meeting stated that while the party held the judiciary in the highest regard, the decision of the Court of Appeal was greeted with consternation, not only amongst leaders and members of the party in Nigeria, but also true lovers of democracy in Nigeria and the world over.
Among the resolutions reached at the meeting was that the PDP remained united, strong, resolute, steadfast and solid under the leadership of the National Caretaker Committee, in view of the fact that the Court of Appeal is not the final court on the matter.
The communique added: “All members, leaders and organs of the party, including but not limited to the Board of Trustees, the Governors Forum, the National Assembly Caucus, PDP Former Ministers Forum, National Vice Chairmen, State Chapters represented by the Conference of State Party Chairmen, Leadership of State Assembly Caucuses and teeming members nationwide, stand resolute that authority to lead the PDP, and indeed any party, solely and exclusively derives from the consent of members at plenary.
“PDP members freely and clearly expressed themselves on the 21st May 2016 at the Port Harcourt National Convention and we stand by the decision given that the National Convention is the highest decision-making organ of the party.
“That we fully endorse the prompt and proactive decision of the National Caretaker Committee to lodge an appeal to the Supreme Court of Nigeria against the decision of the Court of Appeal as well as filing an application for injunction pending appeal of which was done in the morning of Monday 20th February 2017.
“Our abiding faith in the capacity of the judiciary to protect Nigeria’s democracy and political aspirations of the Nigerian people, particularly at the level of the Supreme Court, proven repeatedly over time, is aided by the profound, fearless, irrepressible, comprehensive and insightful minority decision of T. N. Orji-Abadua, J. C. A. in CA/PH/349/2016 SHERRIF & ORS. VS. PDP & ORS., whom we salute for doing the judiciary proud in spite of the predatory interferences of anti-democratic forces and state actors.
“That having duly filed both an appeal to the Supreme Court and an application for Injunction Pending Appeal in the morning of Monday the 20th February 2017, we pass a resounding and unqualified vote of confidence in the leadership of the Sen. Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party and pledge our unalloyed support to it as it pilots the affairs of the party in this critical transitional period of the party’s life.
“To this end, we are not at all deceived by the supposed olive branch being offered by Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff, knowing that the only thing that can come from traitors of his ilk is nothing but a poisoned chalice and a Greek gift.
“The meeting reiterates that the party’s Constitution stipulates the process of democratically electing officers of the party and therefore emphatically rejects any imposition such as those being illegally paraded as officers of the party by Sen. Ali Modu Sherrif.
“That stakeholders and leaders of the party are enjoined to return to their geopolitical zones, states, local governments and wards to convene meetings of the party and disseminate the foregoing to members.
“True party men are urged to remain calm, steadfast, loyal even in the face of wanton provocation of sealing off the venue of a peaceful assembly of stakeholders. We remain committed to the ideals of the party which stands us out as democrats.
“The meeting agreed to appeal to all Nigerians to fully support the Peoples Democratic Party, a genuinely democratic party that is people oriented and a great defender of equity, justice and fairness to all in its commitment to eradicating poverty, hunger and under-development from our country.”Police: why we stopped meeting at ICC
The Police yesterday said they did not bar Ahmed Makarfi’s group from holding a meeting in Abuja.
The police said they got intelligence report of an impending breakdown of law and order.
A statement by the FCT Police Command Spokesman Anjuguri Manzah., said: “The attention of the FCT Police Command has been drawn to an online report subscribing that Police bar Makarfi faction of PDP from using the International Conference Centre (ICC) for a meeting.
“The report was misleading, malicious and capable of misinforming members of the public on the statutory roles of the Nigeria Police Force to restore law and order, and guarantee the protection of lives and property throughout the country.
“The story is absolutely a shadowy imagination of the writer and should be disregarded.
“Credible Intelligence at the disposal of the FCT Police Command indicated that the two factions i.e. the Ahmed Makarfi Group and the Ali Modu Sheriff Group scheduled to hold their meetings at the International Conference Centre (ICC) today and this can lead to serious clash and breach of Public peace.
“The Command did not close down the International conference Centre nor barred the Makarfi faction of PDP from using the ICC for meeting as alleged in the report but intervened to prevent a breakdown of law and order by advising the Management of the ICC not to allow any of the group to use the place for any meeting. However, the Command provided visible security for the Ahmed Makarfi Group when they relocated to Ekiti State Government lodge in Asokoro, Abuja despite not been informed.
“To this end, the FCT Police Command wishes to assure the media of its support and cooperation to ensure law and order, crime-free society and credible reportage.” -

Jonathan endorses Sheriff as PDP chairman
President Goodluck Jonathan has endorsed Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff as the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Sheriff meets Jonathan as security bars PDP meeting
The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff, on Monday met with former President Goodluck Jonathan at the ex-President’s Abuja home.
The meeting took place hours after security agencies cordoned off the International Conference Centre, where the party Caretaker Committee, led by Ahmed Makarfi was to hold an enlarged stakeholders’ meeting.
Sheriff arrived at Jonathan’s Maitama home at 4.25 p.m., accompanied by some members of his National Working Committee (NWC).
Those that accompanied Sheriff included the Deputy National Chairman, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh; National Secretary, Prof. Wale Oladipo and the National Financial Secretary, Adewole Adeyanju.
Others are former Political Adviser, Ahmed Gulak; a former Minister of State for Finance, Yerima Ngama and Senator Umar Gada, among others.
Details of the meeting are known at the time of filing this report.

I had nothing against Jonathan but his policies – Tambuwal
Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, on Wednesday said he has nothing personal against former President Goodluck Jonathan, insisting that he was only opposed to some of his policies that were inimical to the progress of the country.
“It is normal to have opposing views on policies and programmes as it affects the general expectations of individuals and group. That was my realistic view on my stand against the former president’s leadership,” the governor told journalists.
Recalling his days as Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tambuwal explained that he disagreed with the former President on certain policies adopted by his administration.
“As the Speaker of the House of Representatives then, I was always raising the alarm on the way things were being managed in the country especially lack of prudence. But some people felt that I was against Jonathan.
“I never hated Jonathan as a person, but only disagreed with his policies. The recession we are currently facing was as a result of the way the economy was mismanaged by the Jonathan administration,” he added.
The governor said the only way out of this recession was for the Federal Government to inject more money into the economy especially in construction projects, stressing that” this is the only way to create jobs and boost the nation’s economy.”
He stated: “Ask any economist around the world about the panacea to recession, he or she will tell you that it is the injection of money into the economy. That is why we are asking the federal government to give us the Paris Club money to enable us inject huge funds into the economy.
“Former President of the United States of America, Barack Obama, used this strategy of massive construction works to take America out of recession. So construction projects alone will create a lot of jobs and get Nigeria out of recession.
“I know that Nigerians are not happy and are running out of patience but they should be patient. It is very easy to destroy but to rebuild the economy takes time.”

PDP not diminished by loss of power, says Jonathan
•Anenih: party plagued by selfish interests
The loss of power at the centre in the 2015 general election has not diminished the electoral value of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), former President Goodluck Jonathan has said.
Jonathan, who stated this in Abuja while receiving a delegation of PDP chieftains at his private evidence, said the party would work hard to get back to power in 2019.
The former President spoke on the need for the present administration to strengthen national institutions, stressing that the nation could only grow when institutions were strengthened.
“No nation can grow with weakened institutions”, Jonathan said, adding that existing political parties also required reforms to strengthen their structures.
The former President buttressed his call for strong institutions, citing the case of the United States (U.S.), where President Donald Trump’s travel ban on Muslims was upturned by the courts.
He assured the party chieftains of his willingness to make himself available for contributions towards rebuilding and repositioning the party ahead of the 2019 elections.
Jonathan welcomed the idea of direct primaries to elect the party’s candidates for general elections, as enunciated by the party chieftains.
He, however, pointed out that direct primaries do present serious challenges, particularly with the number of voters involved.
Rather, he canvassed an enlarged and broad-based delegate system from the ward level.
Speaking at a separate venue, a former Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), Chief Tony Anenih, blamed the sorry state of the party on pursuit of selfish interests by party chieftains.
Anenih, who also received the party’s delegation at his private residence in Abuja, regretted that the PDP missed many opportunities to organise the party.
“Everybody wants to be national chairman, everybody wants to be the presidential candidate in the pursuit of personal interests and ambitions,” Anenih stated.
He faulted the decision of the party leaders to wait for the judgment of the Court of Appeal in the leadership tussle between the PDP Caretaker Committee and the Ali Modu Sheriff camp.
“Why must you wait for the Appeal Court to deliver judgment before you can organise yourselves as a party?” he queried, adding that the party should start its rebranding process right now.
According to him, many of the politicians that destroyed the PDP are now in All Progressives Congress (APC), saying the APC only exists in the pages of newspapers.
“When things go a little bit wrong, the next thing they do is to move to another political party. I never believed leaving my political party to join another,” he said.
He advised the leadership of the PDP to rebuild the party and make it strong enough to challenge the APC in the 2019 elections.
Anenih said: “You need to build a strong PDP because the APC is nowhere today. It only exists in the pages of newspapers. We need a strong opposition and constructive criticism to move forward.
“The PDP has a chance to choose a leader that will lead the country when President Muhammadu Buhari finishes his tenure. God will help us to choose the leader that will lead Nigeria.”
The Edo-born politician, who called it quits with active partisan politics late 2016, observed that the governors elected on the platform of the PDP were not doing enough to help the party.
He stressed the need for them to be making monthly financial contributions towards the running of the party, saying: “You can’t do anything without money.”
Anenih enjoined the party leaders to strive to ensure a credible convention to elect committed leaders to run the party’s affairs.
A former National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, who also received the delegation, expressed delight that the PDP had kept faith with democracy.
He, however, observed that certain negative tendencies kept hindering the growth of PDP.
Tukur enjoined the party leaders to shun ethnicity and religious bigotry to face the challenge of providing strong and credible front to win the 2019 general elections.
The leader of the delegation, Prof Jerry Gana, presented the report of the party’s Strategy Review and Inter-Party Relations Committee to their hosts during the visit.
He expressed reservations about the neutrality of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as it presently constituted.
According to Gana, INEC was being controlled by the APC-led Federal Government, saying, however, that a summit of opposition parties was in the offing and that the issue of partisanship on the part of the INEC would be tacked at the summit. -

2019: Party chiefs to parley with Jonathan, IBB, Ekwueme
A delegation of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) will today hold consultations with former President Goodluck Jonathan and former military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida.
The delegation, which will also meet with a former National Chairman of PDP, Alhaji Bamanga, will proceed to Enugu on Wednesday to hold similar consultation with former Vice President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme.
An itinerary detailing the movements of the party chieftains named Prof. Jerry Gana as leader of the delegation.
Gana is the chairman of the party’s Strategy Review and Inter-Party Relations.
Also in the delegation is a former Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives, Mr. Austin Opara and media mogul, Chief Raymond Dokpesi.
Although details of the consultations were unknown as at yesterday, it was gathered that the discussions will focus on possibilities of PDP going into alliance with other political parties ahead of the 2019 general elections.
Prof. Gana , last week, announced that PDP was into alliance talks with seven political parties, with the view to form a formidable alliance to confront the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2019.
Gana gave the hint while submitting a report of the party’s Strategy Review and Inter-Party Relations in Abuja, last Thursday.
