Mimiko advises FG to prioritize maternal healthcare

Mimiko gave the advise while speaking with newsmen, on Friday, at the Chatham House in London after delivering a paper on “Improving Access to Health Services for All” using his Ondo achievement in maternal and child health as a case study.

The former Ondo governor said funding will never be adequate in any human setting but with the right kind of leadership, the country can drastically reduce maternal mortality, which is about 19 percent of global maternal deaths according to the World Bank. “We must call a major stakeholders’ meeting where there will be an agreement on a universal health package that every state in the country can afford, and create an eligibility criteria for those who build on it so that they can be rewarded accordingly and eventually we will get there.

As we do this, we prioritize safe motherhood and child health” he said. Mimiko also took time to demonstrate how his administration as Governor of Ondo state midwived a functional and effective healthcare delivery system, which attracted local and international recognitions as a proven method of reducing maternal mortality particularly with the introduction of his homegrown initiatives such as Abiye (Safe motherhood) program, Agbebiye and Orirewa that crashed the maternal mortality indices in the state.

The former governor charged Nigerian leaders at every level not to see only physical structures as achievement saying that quality healthcare for women is a great empowerment tool “Safe motherhood is a gender parity tool, every woman wants good life.

They will be empowered if they can have access to quality health without catastrophic spending. What will eventually drive universal health coverage in Africa is the political will and that is what will generate passion and it the passion that will attract donors from around the world,” Mimiko stated.

Also present at the event were Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El Rufai, Nigeria’s Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole, stakeholders in the health sector from Nigeria and Africa who came to discuss how to optimize global opportunities in achieving Universal Health Coverage and Health Security in Nigeria.

Police foils kidnap of two girls in Kaduna

The Kaduna State Police Command on Tuesday said it had foiled an attempt to kidnap two girls in a village near Shika in Zaria Local Government area.

The Command Public Relation Officer, ASP Muktar Aliyu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna, that the kidnappers numbering about 30 invaded the community on Sept. 18, at about 1:30 a.m.

He said: “When the police was informed we acted instantly and engaged them in gun battle and forced them to run into the bush without accomplishing their mission.

“A policeman, however, sustained gunshot wound during the attack and is now receiving treatment at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Shika.

“Also, the father of the girls, Malam Mustapha Gali, died on Tuesday morning from the injuries he sustained when the kidnappers invaded his house.

“The two girls sustained no injury and are now with their mother.

“No arrest has been made yet, but we are on the trail of the suspects, and wish to assure the general public that they will be arrested and prosecuted.”

  • Kaduna resident doctors to begin strike

Kaduna resident doctors to begin strike

The Association of Residents Doctors in Kaduna State, said on Tuesday that its members would proceed on an indefinite strike from Oct. 2.

President of the association, Dr Joseph Natsah-Jokshan, who made the announcement at a press briefing in Kaduna, said a 21-day strike notice had been forwarded to the government after a congress meeting of the association on Sept. 9.

He said the ultimatum was to compel the government to implement the 2011 agreement it entered with the association.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the agreement was on funding, equipping and staffing of hospitals, salary payment, residency training, and implementation of corrected Consolidated Medical Salary Structure among others.

The NARD president explained that doctors in the state were overstretched, with doctor/population ratio at one to 4,000, as against 600 recommended by the World Health Organization( WHO ).

“The situation is even worse as one move to rural areas. It is therefore requisite that measures should be put in place to correct this.

“We are aware of government’s efforts to recruit about 100 doctors into the current workforce and that is highly commendable, but infrastructure and doctors welfare must also be addressed.

“Currently, Kaduna State has the lowest remuneration among other states in the North West zone and in spite of this, some of our colleagues are owed up to 10 months salary.

“As a result many doctors have left to other states with better prospect, which further compounded the issues, particularly in rural areas where most of the General Hospitals have only two doctors.

“This has resulted in a lot of quackery, as most patients are forced to seek medical care elsewhere, with detrimental outcomes and needless loss of lives,” he said.

On infrastructure, Natsah-Jokshan claimed that the state government has no single intensive care unit in any of its hospitals, while services at accident and emergency units were abysmal due to lack of necessary tools including oxygen.

“Our struggle was because we have a responsibility to care for the lives of people, but we can only achieve that with effective and efficient health care delivery system.”

The Assistant Comptroller-General, Nigeria Customs Service, Zone B, Kaduna, Aminu Dahiru, said on Saturday that the zone had generated N17 billion revenue from January to August.

Dahiru told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna that the figure represents 73.4 percent of the revenue target for the zone this year.

“Our zonal revenue target is N24 billion and so far, we have achieved 73.4 per cent of the revenue figure.

Kaduna Govt declares KASU-ASUU strike unlawful

Gov. Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State on Friday declared as unlawful the strike embarked on by the Kaduna State University (KASU) branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

According to a statement by the Governor’s Spokesman, Mr Samuel Aruwan, the KASU branch of ASUU confirmed that the branch had joined the nation-wide strike as full members of the national union.

He said that there was no trade dispute between the state government and ASUU.

“This is unacceptable to the state government. It is an anomaly that employees can be on strike without declaring a dispute with their employer.

“It bears restating that Nigeria is a federation of states and no trade union can alter this federal reality by imposing on an employer – a state government – the terms that federal employees have agreed with the Federal Government.

“The Kaduna State Government is neither affected nor bound by any dispute, disagreement or agreement ASUU may have with the Federal Government.

“As a sub-national entity, the Kaduna State Government is separate from the Federal Government of Nigeria. The Constitution of Nigeria clearly attests to this.

“It is the considered view of the Kaduna State Government that the KASU branch of ASUU has embarked on an unlawful strike,’’ Aruwan said.

According to him, the Kaduna State Government is not liable for salaries and allowances for the period of the unlawful strike.

“The government shall proceed to initiate the necessary disciplinary steps in accordance with the Kaduna State Public Service Rules.

“With respect to individual’s act of commission or omission by those that choose to join or persist in an unlawful strike,’’ he said.

  • Tender care for VVF patients in Kaduna

Tender care for VVF patients in Kaduna

Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF), a childbirth disorder, hurts physically and emotionally but Kaduna State has found sustainable ways to soothe the pain. ABDULGAFAR ALABELEWE reports

The experts say Vesico Vaginal Fistula or VVF afflicts over 12,000 women every year in Nigeria, leaving them unable to control urine. The condition is defined as a hole that develops between the vagina and the bladder, resulting in uncontrollable urine leakage. The causes: mostly obstructed labour, early marriage and poverty.

Most of those 12,000 new cases are in northern Nigeria, according to USAID.

The Project Manager, USAID Fistula Care Plus Project, Dr. Habibu Sadauki said at an event in Zaria that over 5,000 cases have been repaired.

The USAID Project Manager disclosed that in Kano State alone, 10 to 15 new cases are recorded every week in various hospitals in the state, as he maintained that fistula can be repaired and prevented if parents educate their female children to patronise hospitals for proper delivery.

VVF patients are often rejected by their husbands and avoided by the rest of the society. The patients themselves withdraw from the world that does not want them.

That is where the Kaduna State government is making a difference. VVF patients at Hajia Gambo Sawaba General Hospital Zaria, the state’s VVF centre, are getting double treatment. After the surgery to stop urine leakage, the state government in collaboration with United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) trains and empowers them with vocational skills and gives them starter packs to enable them easily deal with the post-VVF stigma.

The 100 rehabilitated women were recently provided with tools and machines to start off businesses to become self-reliant after undergoing series of training during their stay in the hospital.

Wife of the state governor, Hajia A’isha el-Rufai, while speaking at the graduation ceremony of rehabilitated and empowered patients held at Gambo Sawaba General Hospital described the continued recurrence of obstetric fistula as “a human rights tragedy”, reflecting the marginalisation of those affected.

“Their isolation means they often go unnoticed by policymakers, and as a result, little action is taken to address or prevent their condition,” she said.

The governor’s wife said that the patients would be reintegrated into their families and the society through their newly acquired skills and tools for economic empowerment. “The gesture is a testimony to the consistent commitment of the state government toward ensuring improved health outcomes for its citizenry.”

“Obstetric fistula is one of the most serious and tragic injuries that can occur during child birth. It is a hole between the birth canal and the bladder or rectum caused by prolonged, obstructed labour without timely access to emergency obstetric care, notably a cesarean section. It leaves women leaking urine, faeces or both and over time, it leads to chronic medical problems,” she said.

Kaduna State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Paul Manya Dogo said, “VVF a serious condition that sadly crippled the future of young prospective women in Nigeria, with Northern States bearing the greatest burden.

According to him, “many girls between the ages 11 years and 15 years, who become mothers mostly because they were married-out early suffer some forms of deprivation. Such girls denied access to emergency obstetric care, are often victims of VVF.”

“Estimates in Nigeria reveal that between 400, 000 and 800,000 women are currently living with the scourge of VVF with about 20,000 new cases being recorded annually,”

The Commissioner stressed the need for community and village leaders, clerics, health workers and the media to create more awareness on the causes and how to prevent VVF.
