  • Perception of Africans to dance has changed – Kaffy

World record dancer and founder of Imagneto Dance Company, Kaffy, has said dance in Africa has been accepted with integrity.

According to Kaffy, whose real name is Kafayat Oluwatoyin Shafau, there is a different perception of dance and dancers in Africa now.

“Dance in Africa is now something that has been accepted with integrity,” said Kaffy.

“I thank God that so far so good in the past 19years i think i can beat my chest to say that I have been able to change a lot of things and perception concerning; first of all the sustainability of dance as seen as a career option.

“Also the look and feel of being a dancer in general, where parents are scared of security challenges like what is your plan for the future?. Who are you going to end up marrying? And what kind of children are you going to bred? Is there guarantee that you can sustain your home? Among others were the driving forces that propelled me to want to get it right and correct all these fear.”

“And every time I took a left turn, I make sure I discover the right one, which had led us here.”

she also shared the value of dancers.  “I can go on with the value of dancers in the industry; which is the reason i am giving it this much sacrifice and believing this much because dance has helped me stay off the street and helped me maintain my sanity. And i am here to help you guys understand the power of dance; that before man could speak, he moved. He gesticulated, he actually had to use actions to express himself and that is how powerful dance is.

“Dance can be used to express love, it can be used to charged warriors for war, it can be use to communicate for peace, it can be used to celebrate. I don’t see anything that dances is not embedded in. Even for our health and state of mind. I have never seen anybody that dance and does it with sadness. So for me, if dance is that powerful, that is how much i knew that i can do so much helping people through dance. As well as the health sector too.

Kaffy is also a choreographer and fitness coach.

  • We’ve been wired to think our culture is evil

WORLD record dancer, Kaffy, has said that her project, The Dance Workshop and Confrence, billed to hold at Landmark, Victoria Island, Lagos, from June 2 and June 5, is to revive “our forgotten cultural heritage in term of dance.

“I want to use this conference to revive our cultural heritage and bring it to the mainstream,” she said.

“Let us strip off the areas that make us fear of practicing them. One of them is religion, where you have people say it is those who worship the God of Iron that dance bata. We have been wired to think that our culture is evil. And we are now imbibing the culture that teaches more immorality, that we can ever consume in a lifetime. But when we look at our culture, the discipline that is embedded in that black magic they talk about has sustain us better spiritually than the world we have been sold to right now.

“I think it is time to wake up.

“And dance is just the viable means to be able to do that. I went all the way to Ife to sit with the Oba. It was a miraculous meeting and when I spoke to Ooni, he said he is coming. I said to him, you that sits on a throne that carries so much power, and history that you cannot finish telling the story. And if you support this course bearing our culture, the history the children coming will hear in years to come will be that of shaku-shaku and that of bata, will never be heard of again.

“And because I really want this thing to be a hub; an international dance and culture information conference, I decided to go international. This dream started in 2015 when I was going from one local area to another in Lagos to take kids on the workshop.”

On the conference holding this year, Kaffy said she wants to make it bigger.

“Forward to 2019, my husband was wondering if I have gone mad, when I said I wanted it to be bigger; blow up the world. I decided that I want to involve more countries, between 2015-2017 that I have travelled out and taught in different cities and schools, and I discovered that they are recycling the wrong kind of afro dance. They just pick what they see on the internet and that is what they have. Fortunately for us, Africa is trending, so the consumption of our heritage and culture is heavy to the western world.”

The keynote speakers and instructors expected include the likes of Zenith Bank MD, Mr. Ebenezer Onyeagwu, the Ooni of Ife, HRM Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, US Consular General, Mr. F. John Bray, Creative Director for Beyonce and Destiny’s child, Frank Gatson, Mrs. Kay Ovia and Transcorp MD, Mr. Valentine Ozigbo.

The workshop teachers include Marcus Cobb (US), DanceFikshun, Jusbmore,  Dancegod Lloyd Ghana, Courtnae Paul, Sino Dinuywa from South Africa, Kwame Kideyez Osei (Germany), Ice Nweke and others.

  • How Kaffy re-wrote the dance narrative in Nigeria

Born on June 30, 1980 as Kafayat Oluwatoyin Shafau in Lagos State, Kaffy has redefined Nigeria’s entertainment industry as a dancer, choreographer, dance instructor and fitness coach. Her story is that of transition from grass to grace through perseverance, hard work, dedication and self-drive. It is on this premise that I will be looking into the life of this accomplished and self-actualised young woman.

Kaffy attended Chrisland School in Opebi, Lagos and Coker Secondary School for her primary and post-primary education. Right from her childhood, she had always loved dancing and this made her to participate in a lot of sporting activities in her schools, including taking ballet classes. Though she was born into wealth, things took a downward trend for her family when her parents separated. Life became so hard that they found it difficult to eke out a living. The once prosperous family wallowed in wants and Kaffy took the pain of survival, taking gari (cassava flakes) for several months.

Her walk into fame was birthed when she resolved to help people lose weight. She joined an aerobics class and was always regular and punctual. This prompted her aerobics teacher to appoint her to lead the class whenever she was unavailable. Being a dancer, she infused dancing into aerobics and the class loved it, always wanting her to lead whenever the teacher was absent.

Fate thrust her into dancing when she was approached by a promoter for a modelling job. Part of the modelling activity was choreography. Even though she didn’t want to do the choreography at first, she later agreed and asked the promoter to allow her do a solo performance. Unknown to her, many artistes were present at the event and loved her performance. Some of the artistes, including Ruggedman and Adewale Ayuba, approached her after her performance, wanting her to be part of their songs’ videos. That was how Kaffy became famous and gradually stepped up the ladder to become a professional dancer.

Kaffy started professional dancing in 2002 and ever since she has been an inspiration and a positive role model to many, most especially, young people interested in dancing. She has co-ordinated many events, some of which are: Malta Guinness Street Dance, MTN Project Fame, and Silverbird Unplugged where she was either a choreographer, a fitness trainer or a judge.

She has also appeared in many top-rated music videos of top Nigerian artistes, such as Ruggedman and P-Square, among many others. She has coordinated and performed in a host of other events too many to mention in this article.

In 2006, Kaffy with her dance group achieved a rare feat of dancing for 55 hours and 40 minutes to claim the Guinness Book of Record for the longest dance party. This established her career as a dancer and helped portray Nigeria in good light.

Her desire to impact and groom the next generation of dancers led her to establish a dance company, Imagneto Dance Company. Many dancers, who passed through this training centre are doing great in the industry today. A lot of aspiring dancers today were inspired by her larger-than-life personae and success story. An example is Rita Adoh, a graduate, who trained with Kaffy at the her dance school. She sponsored herself through college from proceeds she got from dancing. She hopes to make a fortune from dancing. Rita is one among the many youths Kaffy is grooming to storm and take over the entertainment world.

Kaffy is an advocate for Nigerian dancers. She has, at various times, challenged musicians to treat dancers with dignity and respect. One of such was when she called out Davido for cancelling a performance with a dance crew at the last minute. Kaffy was not disrespected personally. But this was her business as the leader of the art. And in the absence of any legal channel to seek redress, Kaffy took it upon herself to pass across a strong and palpable message to the world. Dancers need to be respected.

Her advocacy has improved the way dancers are being treated in Nigeria and this won her the special recognition award at the 2018 edition of the Headies Award. Many people are now beginning to see dancers as professional artistes and not the last chain of command in the entertainment industry. Young people now pursue dancing as a career because Kaffy serves as their inspiration in the field.

Kaffy’s story encapsulates hard work, resilience, dedication, defiance to status quo and a desire to help others succeed; what other ways can one describe self-actualisation? She is not only self- actualised, but an inspiration to many and a symbol of the can-do spirit of a Nigerian.

  • Davido has no right to send dancers off stage – Kaffy

Davido has no right to send dancers off stage – Kaffy

Following the scene at the 3Thrones concert, which was held recently; where Davido asked dancers to go off the stage, award winning dancer Kafayat  Oluwatoyin Shafau popularly known as Kaffy, speaking on behalf of dancers in Nigeria, noted that all dancers are professionals in their own field and deserve to be respected as any other person in the entertainment scene.

According to the Kaffy, the dancers who have been practicing for weeks for the 3thrones, concert did not deserve the humiliation put on them by the artiste.

Using profanities to address Davido in a video she posted on her Instagram page, she stated: “This message is for Omo Baba Olowo, it is unethical and unprofessional. I see up to 50 dancers practicing for the show that you have collected millions for, and they are being paid peanuts, only for you to tell them you don’t need them. They are human beings too.

“And this goes out to all other artistes, where was your gut some years back on that same stage, when you were performing to people. Now that people are now screaming your name; Una don feel say, una no need dancers again.

She added that Davido could have found a way of communicating with the dancers, “if u don’t want dancers, express it way before you agree to allow them dance, than when you are about to climb the stage and tell them you need them again or tell dancers not to come near you while u perform.”

Following the outburst by the dancer, she later apologised for her choice of words.

“I want to start by apologising profusely for my profanity,” Kaffy said.

“It’s not how I roll. I am one person who promotes discipline and respect among dancers towards their clients and one another.

“However this issue is real. We matter and deserve respect as we have become part of the building block of the entertainment world. We communicate with our bodies what words and sound can’t express. We paint a picture that defies laws of nature and produce masterpieces beyond mere imaginations. It requires a lot of brain power to begin to be a dancer not to talk of the ability to command muscles people can’t imagine using and that is still underrating the Power of the Art of Dance.

Stating further, “So it is time we take control and have a voice. Create structure that will protect us from further disrespect and I will do all in my power to continue to protect dancers. I know great minds out there in our world that will rise up too. It’s been years and I have been quiet for too long.”
