    Kaffy defends racy photos

For Nigerian dancer Kafayat Shafau-Ameh, there is more to life that just dancing. Simply known as Kaffy, the dancer, who years back made the Guinness Book of record with her dancing skills, says women should feel confident with their body, irrespective of status or career choice.

The mother of two made the remark in response to critics who came at her recently when she posted her photo shoots for her work out body class; clad in a tank top.

Defending the photos, which generated a lot of debate in the cyber world, she said; “unfortunately my art requires a wide range of clothing options and revealing is one of them. What if I was a runway model, wetin you go say? Because a lot of them are amazing mums, but their job requires to wear anything. Try swimming in hijab and a full blown track suit.”

Kaffy who felt offended by some of the remarks which point to the fact that she can’t be seen in such outfit as a mother continued; “did I wear it to your house? Is this a fashion shoot for a clothing line? This is about body care and you are the judge of who is a perfect mum. This is my art, if you don’t like, unfollow.”

She also noted that women who wish to show their inner selves have been taunted by the hypocrisy of the society. “It is okay for men, but the women who actually bring stability and work hard to keep everything together are neglected. My life is set to inspire. Be a mum, be a career woman, be a wife… you can still be strong, sexy, sensual and a great achiever.”

By taking a stand, Kaffy joins a host of female showbiz personalities, who feel women should be given the chance to feel comfortable in whatever career they choose.

It was a star-studded gig at the posh residence of Nigeria’s couple singers, Tunde and Wunmi Obe, who threw an album listening party for their new album, T.W.O Plus, but one of the spectacular moments was the display of dance prowess by actress Funke Akindele and popular dance artiste, Kaffy. The duo provided the side attraction with their improvised hilarious dance steps.

The event, which had Femi Kuti, Ras Kimono, 9ice, Tosyn Bucknor and others in attendance, was all fun, as the celebs enjoyed champagne and barbecue amidst music from DJ Jimmy Jatt.

Apparently encouraged by the pumping beats from DJ Jimmy Jatt, the dance fever got hotter, that other guests took to the dance floor.

Also present at the event were Dele Esan, Essence, Gbemi Olateru-Olagbegi, Kenny Saint Best, Yeni Kuti, Labi Olayori, Tony Okoroji, Funke Kuti, Yinka Davies, and many others.

  • Kaffy proves critics wrong

    Kaffy proves critics wrong

Kafayat Shafau-Ameh, an award-winning dancer and honcho of Imagneto Dance Company, was last Saturday delivered of a baby girl at County Hospital, Lagos.

But until the news of her safe delivery broke, many of her fans had expressed mixed reactions that her laborious stagecraft, while she was pregnant, could be dangerous to her health.

Her husband, Joseph Adakole Ameh, shared the good news on Instagram, with a photo caption: “You all know what this means, I guess. Say hello to my princess…”

Their first child, Sean Oluwatosin, a boy, was born in 2011.

Interestingly, the couple has named their new child Eliana Ameh.

The fears expressed by her fans might not be unconnected with the way she threw her body around during the grand finale of ‘MTN Project Fame’, which saw diminutive Olawale Ojo lifting the laurel.

At that time, she was said to be carrying a five-month-old pregnancy.

From Makossa to Soukus, Fuji and the highly revered Michael Jackson’s dance steps, she led her group in an enthralling choreographic display that earned them thunderous applause.

In her reaction to the criticisms generated by her performance at the show, she said, “Apart from being a dancer, I am a fitness consultant. So, I will not do anything to harm my child. Apart from being a dancer, I am a healthy person, so people should get that clear and not jump into conclusion, thinking I just want to go and dance, because it is my job. Pregnancy is not a disease neither is it cancer. Some women even go to the farms with their pregnancies in the villages and they give birth without medical help. Maria Carey performed on stage dancing with twin pregnancy. It is not a new thing. It is just in this part of the world that whenever a woman is pregnant, they treat her like an egg. And that can be detrimental to her and the baby. A child whose mother is active during pregnancy is always active with less fat and at normal size.”

Her group, Masta Blasta, won the competition at the last Calabar Carnival.

During her first pregnancy, Kaffy had performed on the Project Fame stage exactly 10 days to the delivery of her baby boy.

“Everything is according to pace. I will not do more than my body can take. There are a lot of techniques to dancing, which somebody who is not trained might not know. You see me winding, but you don’t know the technique I am using to wind in a way that it doesn’t disturb my baby. You see me dancing and you don’t know how I am able to land on my face that it doesn’t make me get abdominal pain. That is why I am a professional at what I do,” she added.

Kaffy, K9 headline Dance Industry Night

THE Official Dance Industry Night, a monthly celebration of dance and dancers has recorded another success as this month’s event which had dance queen, Kaffy, and Trybe Records artiste, K9, went down as planned, to the delight of both organisers and supporters alike.

Though heavy with a five-month pregnancy, Kaffy still made time out to excite her teeming fans. She left very little out to the delight of her fans. When asked why she still decided to dance regardless of her condition, the dancer replied, “Pregnancy na sickness?”

Trybe Records artiste, K9, was also on ground as promised giving the crowd a feel of his single Kokoma. Despite not being much of a dancer himself, he managed to keep the crowd elated and in tune with his performance.

The Official Dance Industry Night is an initiative of Dance TV, spearheaded by its C.E.O, Efe Richard-Lagos, who described the idea as a medium to create more awareness about the existence of a dance industry, as opposed to it being perceived as just one segment of the music industry.

“We are happy about the success of this second episode, when we say we will do something we always deliver,” Richard-Lagos stated.

  • Fear not for my pregnancy, says Kaffy

Fear not for my pregnancy, says Kaffy

The crowd shuddered at the energetic way she threw her body around during the grand finale of ‘MTN Project Fame’ which saw diminutive Olawale Ojo lifting the laurel. Kafayat Shafau-Ameh, a professional dancer and honcho of Imagneto Dance Company took her turn, during the show’s interval to entertain guests, carrying a five-month pregnancy.

From Makossa to Soukus, Fuji and the highly revered Michael Jackson’s dance steps, she led her group in an enthralling choreographic display that earned them thunderous applause. But perhaps more captivating was the pregnant state of the artiste during the performance. Voices ‘struggle’ above the music volume as audience members pass comments, trying to hear themselves out. “She is five months pregnant,” you could hear that assertion from a few who appeared to be so sure. And as if she got hint of the argument, the dancer jacked her belly with both palms, feigning some cyclonic rumbling that earned her a louder ovation.

Kaffy, as she is fondly called is expecting her second baby, and she has assured her fans that her stunt is nothing to worry about. But perhaps she is even concerned about her female fans; most of whom she said may not understand the advantage of being very active during pregnancy.

“Exercising during pregnancy is very relative to the woman. Whatever activities a woman does before pregnancy, she can continue during pregnancy, as long as she does not belong to the high-risk pregnancy category, which has to do with women who are carrying pregnancy at a very late age.”

Kaffy, who took some of the public’s concern for criticism said; “apart from being a dancer, I am a fitness consultant. So I will not do anything to harm my child. Apart from being a dancer, I am a healthy person, so people should get that clear and not jump into conclusion, thinking I just want to go and dance, because it is my job. Pregnancy is not a disease, neither is it cancer. Some women even go to the farm with their pregnancy in the village and they give birth without medical help. Maria Carey performed on stage dancing with twin pregnancy. It is not a new thing; it is just in this part of the world that whenever a woman is pregnant, they treat her like an egg. And that can be detrimental to her and the baby. A child whose mother is active during pregnancy is always active, less fat and at normal size.”

How long does she hope to continue dancing? The dancer snapped; “It is nobody’s business how long i want to continue. It is my body and it is my child. All that you people should pray for is the safe delivery of mother and child. I am not a baby, the fact that i am dancing does not mean that I am a toddler and that I don’t know how to take care of myself and my family.” She recalled that, two years ago, she had performed on the same ‘Project Fame’ stage exactly 10 days to the delivery of her first child without any qualms.

“Everything is according to pace. I will not do more than my body can take. There are a lot of techniques to dancing which somebody who is not trained might not know. You see me winding, but you don’t know the technique I am using to wind, in a way that it doesn’t disturb my baby. You see me dancing and you don’t know how I am able to land on my face that it doesn’t make me get abdominal pain. That is why I am a professional at what I do.”

The dancer noted that while some people are expressing fear for her, others have been a source of motivation. She said she has started a campaign called ‘Pregnancy and Child Health’ where she gets to educate women on how safe a society can be when certain medical criteria are met.
