ESE ORURU’S ABDUCTION Prosecute suspects, says Kano govt

The government of Kano State has urged the police to prosecute the culprits responsible for Ese Oruru’s alleged abduction.

The state also exonerated itself from the abduction, saying it was a private action which the  culprits must answer to individually.

Commissioner of Information, Youth, Sports and Culture Mallam Muhammad Garba, in a statement, blamed the police for its laxity in handling such a crucial issue of national concern.

Garba condemned the abductors and described statements linking the Kano state government to the issue as unfounded, untrue, misguided and mischievous, adding that the state was virtually unaware of the case until it was publicised.

“In view of the gravity of the allegation, the need to protect the right of minors on matters of faith and marriage, as well as promote unity and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians, particularly in the face of incorrect, and skewed misrepresentation of the issue, the government of Kano state, for the purpose of setting the record straight, declares that:

“The issue was handled with dispatch competently, courageously and with all sense of concern by the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, since August last year when the case was brought to his attention by ordering that the girl, Ese Oruru, who has never ever been kept in the palace, be taken back to her parents in Yenogoa, in liaison with the office of the AIG Zone One, Nigeria Police Force.”

“The government was concerned that its directive was not handled accordingly and, therefore, ordered an investigation into why the directive was not complied with by the office of the AIG.

“The issue was never brought to our attention, we only knew of it in the media.

“The state government condemns the actions of the culprit as it is against the provisions of the Constitution and teachings of Islam, which abhors abduction and forced marriage, even with the consent of parents of a girl, be her a minor or adult, and forced conversion to Islam as the Quran states that ‘there is no compulsion in religion’.

    “Security and other relevant agencies should expedite action to bring the suspect(s) to book and be dealt with according to the law;

“The actions of the culprit are private actions, which he is personally responsible for, even before the law. The person is solely responsible for his action and should take responsibility for it.”

  • Power Ministry to Kano Govt: follow due process

The Ministry of Power has advised Kano State Government to follow due process in obtaining all requisite approvals before commencement of any hydro electricity project in the state.

The Special Adviser to the Minister of Power on Investment, Finance and Donor, Olajuwon Olaleye, told The Nation at a conference in Lagos that as much as the ministry encourages the growth of the sector by seeking private and public participation in electricity projects, due process is required of Kano State Government before it can access water for power generation purpose.

He said the Federal Ministry of Water Resources is charged with the responsibilities of giving approval for the use of water for power generation, therefore, he advised the Kano State Government to approach the Water Resources Ministry for such approvals.

Olaleye, who was responding to allegations of non-approval of licence for hydro power generation raised by the Special Adviser to the Kano State Governor, Amisi Abdullahi, insisted that due process must be followed to get needed approvals. He said there is a director in the Water Ministry that the Kano State Government needs to interface with to get the approvals.

He said: “The Federal Ministry of Water Resources also has an agency that is being funded by bilateral organisations. The agency works on dam projects especially dams that are meant for power generation. On the issue of licensing for power generation, there is a process that needs to be followed, especially for a private company that wants to be involved in electricity generation.”

He said the state government needs to look inward by tapping into opportunities in solar energy.

In a related development, Abdullahi said that Kano State Government is targeting 10 megawatts (Mw) of electricity by December 2014. He said the 10ms would be added to the 250mw of electricity, which the state is currently getting from the national grid.

He stated that the state government will use the 10mw of electricity to provide street lights, noting that the government relies on alternative source of energy for sustenance.

“We are targeting 10mw of electricity by December 2014.  We will use it to power our street lights. We are using diesel generators, which virtually everybody is using in Nigeria to augment supply from the grid.  The government is facing challenges such as failure to get approvals to generate power through hydro means,” he said.

Abdullahi said the state government is taking a proactive approach towards improving electricity generation, adding that hydro power generation holds much prospects for the state.

  • Kano rejects PDP caretaker committee

Kano state government has rejected the recent appointment of a caretaker committee for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Special Adviser to the Governor on Sports, Alhaji Ahmed Shu’aibu-Gara, made the government’s position known at a news conference in Kano on Wednesday.

According to him, the appointment of the caretaker committee for the state by the national leadership of the PDP is against the party’s constitution.

‘’From preamble to declaration in the party constitution there is no where it provides for a caretaker arrangement as bridging model for any available vacuum whatsoever.

‘’Beside appointing a caretaker for 90 days for Kano State there is nothing to take care of rather it is a careless undertaking that is dead on arrival because it is pregnant with intent,” Shu’aibu-Gara said.

He explained that the state chapter of the PDP had demonstrated so much responsibility and uncommon respect to the party’s constitution by formally notifying its leadership on July 26 that the tenure of the state executive committee was to expire on August 23.
