  • Kano trains 3,500 vigilance members, distributes uniforms

    The Kano State Government has trained 3,500 vigilance members on basic literacy and distributed uniforms worth over N200 million to various vigilance groups with a view to enhance their operations.

    The Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje, made this known on Monday during the post – International Literacy Day celebration in Kano.

    Ganduje said that the training would reduce the level of illiteracy in the state and enhance their operations.

    He said that his administration had given high premium to adult literacy in the state.

    ‎“Education is potentially the greatest instrument we have at our disposal to empower our people,” he said.

    Ganduje added that the state government ‎would set up a security neighborhood agency to check security issues in the state.

    ‎The governor also distributed 13,200 uniforms worth N200 million to members of the vigilance groups in the 44 local government areas.

    He also ‎promised to pay the remaining three months allowance for instructors at the literacy centres in the state.

    Earlier, the Executive Secretary of National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education, Prof. Abba Haladu, commended the governor for his support to the state agency.

    Haladu ‎said that International Literacy Day is celebrated annually world wide to bring together government’s, multi and bilateral organisations as well as NGOs to promote literacy within and beyond the 2030 education agenda.

    “We have so far recorded a number of achievements including the development of vital documents such as the Policy Guidelines for Mass Literacy and Operational Plan for a National Mass Literacy Programme and Literacy Primers in the three major Nigerian languages and English,” he said.

    He also urged the state and local governments to deploy the needed political will and, therefore, provide the necessary material support for the eradication of literacy in their ‎respective areas of jurisdiction.

    Haladu then called on the state governor to approve the payment of monthly facilitators part-time allowances, to enhance their motivation and additional vehicles for monitoring and data collection.

    He also appealed for the rehabilitation the women ‎education centres.

    ‎The Executive Secretary commended the Kano Mass Education Agency for organising important mobilisation activities and called on the government to provide more support for the agency.

  • Kano Assembly to amend ex-Governors’ Pension Law

    The Kano State House of Assembly on Monday swung into action to commence a process of amending the state law that provided pension and gratuity for former governors and deputy governors.

    The decision to commence the amendment of the law followed a motion of urgent public importance raised before the legislature by a member, Alhaji Labaran Madari (APC), representing Warawa Constituency.

    According to Madari, the amendment of the law is to reduce unnecessary spending of public funds through payments to former governors and deputy governors who are also holding political offices after their tenures.

    Madari said that the decision to review the existing law was to suspend such payments pending when the person would no longer hold any other political office.

    The member also said that any Deputy Governor who later becomes governor, his pension as former Deputy would automatically be stopped.

    According to him, the decision became imperative, following prevailing economic situation caused by dwindling price and over dependence on crude oil by past administrations.

    “As representatives of the people, it is our responsibility to find ways to reduce the burden on government so as to enable it execute projects that are of benefits to the general public,” the legislator said.

    The Assembly members at a plenary presided by the Speaker, Alhaji Abdullahi Ata, suggested the creation of an ad-hoc committee to handle the issue.

    The Assembly set up an ad-hoc committee under the leadership of the House Majority Whip, Alhaji Kabiru Hassan-Dashi, and was given two weeks to submit its report.

    Kwankwaso’s former commissioner docked for alleged N47.168m fraud

    The immediate-past Commissioner for Health in Kano state under the tenure of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Dr. Abubakar Labaran was on Thursday arraigned before a Kano High Court sitting at Audu Bako secretariat over alleged misappropriation of  N47, 168, 000.00 scholarship fund.

    The Nation reports that Dr. Labaran was also a member of the state Scholarship Committee that handled funds made for tuition fees and allowances of Kano state indigenes studying in Mansoura University, Egypt.

    The Presiding Judge, Justice Aisha Rabi’u Danlami, however, granted the accused person bail, in the sum of N200, 000 and two reliable sureties on like sum.

    The Nation reports that the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission dragged Dr. Yusuf before the court to respond to a three count charge.

    The state anti graft agency slammed the accused person with a three-count charge of Criminal Breach of Trust, Disobeying Administration direction and Corrupt Practices.

    According to the prosecution, the former Commissioner, while in office  acted in contrast to the provisions of Sections 315 and 123 (a) of the Penal Code  Law, adding that, his action further violated the provisions of Section 24 sub-section (a)(1) of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission as amended.

    The prosecution led by Bar. Mahmud Balarabe, tendered the Charge Sheet and Summary of Evidence before the court.

    The accused person denied the allegations contained in the Charge Sheet as his Counsel, Bar. Nuraini Jimoh, urged the court to admit the accused person into bail.

    He informed the court that, the accused person is already on Administrative Bail.

    In her ruling on the bail application, Justice Danlami declared that, “although the three charges leveled against the accused person are criminal offences but they are bailable, hence, this honorable court has granted the accused person bail in the sum of N200,000 and two sureties on like sum.”

    The case was adjourned to April 30, 2018 for hearing.

    Kano State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, on Tuesday pledged to deploy the state’s population to stimulate the economy and ensure growth and development.

    He also pledged to offer women equal opportunities to attain their potentials in life.

    Ganduje made the remarks on Tuesday when he visited 150 young men and women sponsored by his administration for skills training at Peugeot Automobile of Nigeria ( PAN ) in Kaduna.

    Out of the 150 trainees, 100 are males, and 50 females.

    “Population can be a liability, but we are making our population an asset, and the best way to make our population to be an asset is by developing skills acquisition among our youth.

    “We assure you, we are training you not only for you to work but also to employ others.

    “This government is very serious on women empowerment; days are gone when women still rely on meagre resources.

    “We want you to be earning good income, it is necessary for women, that is why we are exposing them to all kinds of legitimate trades so as to earn a living.

    “Once you are earning good income; it will contribute to peaceful co-existence with your husbands and families and that is what this government is doing.’’

    The governor disclosed that the government has built a N5 billion skills acquisition centre to empower and create enabling environment for sustainable skills in the state.

    Ganduje said his dream was to make Kano the hub of international trade attracting investors and traders from across the globe to the city.
    The governor faulted the current curriculum in the country’s education system, saying it can no longer sustain Nigeria’s manpower development needs.

    “So we want to break from that, the only way we can do it is to modify our curriculum.

    “To see that we have identified the necessary skills we need in our day-to-day activities, so that youth will embrace skills and be trained, that is the only way to ensure sustainability in terms of employment in the country,” he said.

    He said that the state government had commissioned a study which identified 24 trades which would offer gainful employment to the youth.

    “That is why we decided to build an ultra modern skills acquisition centre in Kano worth N5 billion.

    Earlier the Managing Director of PAN, Mr Ibrahim Boyi said the company was training the second batch of trainees from the state, with the first batch having 75 participants and 150 in the second batch.

    “The Governor during the graduation of first batch, promised that the second batch will include girls and women, and you can see clearly, the direction of the government in ensuring youth empowerment on inclusive bases, so that nobody is left behind.’’

    Boyi assured the governor that PAN would give the students the best training they deserve.

    Court remands man for allegedly shooting brother to death

    A Kano Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, remanded 33-year-old Musa Shu’aibu in prison, for allegedly shooting his brother, Adamu Shu’aibu to death.

    Musa, who lives at Jigawar Alhaji Ado village, Dawakin Kudu Local Government area of Kano State, is facing a four-count charge of criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, illegal possession of firearms and culpable homicide.

    The Chief Magistrate, Hajiya Fatima Adamu, ordered the remand of the accused till March 29.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Anthony Edward, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Jan. 30 at about 10 p.m. in Dawakin Kudu local government area of the state.

    “The accused conspired with nine of his friends, who are now at large, while armed with a gun, shot his brother to death,” the prosecutor told the court.

    Edward said two locally made revolvers and one pistol were recovered from the accused.

    The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 97 and 221 of the Robbery and Firearms Special Provision Act, 2004.

    Musa, however, pleaded guilty to the charges.

    Ganduje vows to tackle water shortage

    Kano state Government has  expressed  its commitment to overcome the lingering shortage of water bedeviling the people of the metropolitan areas of the state.

    The state commissioner of Water Resources, Alhaji Usman Sule Riruwai made the  disclosure  during an inspection visit to Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant, adding that  the state government has concluded all arrangement to partner with foreign agencies to turn around the entire water works in the state.

    He explained that the government has rolled out a five year plan for the development of the water sector of the state adding that very soon a water Law will be enacted in the state which will pave way for the transformation of water supply in the state.

    The commissioner who was represented by the permanent secretary of the ministry, Hajiya Bilkisu Waziri expressed delight over the capacity at which the treatment plant is working saying that it is encouraging the way management of the plant are handling the machines.

    She commended the company that is supplying the treatment plant with aluminium sulphate Drury Industries which according to her keeps the plant working at a high capacity adding that Ganduje administration in the state will not relent on its effort to providing portable drinking water in the state.

    Ganduje orders probe of former Kano AG

    Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has directed a full scale investigation into financial management and other government transactions of the former Accountant General Hajia  Aisha Bello

    In a statement signed by the state Commissioner for Information Mallam Mohammad Garba, the Governor ordered the state anti-corruption commission to investigate contracts payment, salary payments and alleged salary deductions among others.

    Ganduje said while the investigation continues, government is considered appropriate necessary measures on the management of the offices of the Accountant General and Sub-Treasurer pending the final conclusion of the investigations.

    Ganduje however applauded Hajia Aisha Bello for her service to the state while accepting her resignation..

    However,  the Governor has appointed the Director Treasury in the Ministry of Finance, Malam Shehu Abbas  Mu’azu, as the Acting Accountant General.

    Hajia Aisha Bello tendered her resignation Friday for no reasons.

    Petrol diversion: NSCDC intercepts two trucks in Kano

    Operatives of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps ( NSCDC ), Kano State Command, have intercepted two trucks laden with 85,000 litres of petrol while trying to divert the product.

    The NSCDC Commandant, Mr Aliyu Mohammed, disclosed this while addressing newsmen in Kano on Friday.

    He said already four suspects had been apprehended in connection with the illegal act.

    According to him, one of the trucks which is supposed to discharge the product at Maigatari town in Jigawa, has been intercepted on Zaria Road.

    He said the other truck, which was supposed to take the product to a filling station at Mariri on Maiduguri Road, was however, discovered at Dawanau on Katsina Road.

    “These are some of the successes recorded by the NSCDC Command in line with its mandate.

    “The command will continue to discharge its responsibilities in order to ensure that perpetrators of this unpatriotic act are arrested and brought to book,” he said.

    Mohammed said the two trucks would be escorted to their original destinations to discharge the commodity and be sold to public at the approved price of N145 per litre.

    He said as soon as investigation was completed, the four suspects would be charged to court for appropriate prosecution.

    He, however, warned fuel marketers to desist from diversion of the product and have the fear of Allah as they would have to account for their own deeds in the hereafter.

    Black marketers in Kano state have continued to make brisk business due to the lingering petrol scarcity.

    Police parade 16 suspects for Armed Robbery in Kano

     

    The Kano State Police Command, on Wednesday, paraded 16 suspected criminals for various offences, ranging from armed robbery to kidnapping.

    While parading the suspects in Kano, the Spokesman of the Police Command, DSP Magaji Musa Majiya, said syndicate of armed robbers, who rob inhabitants of Kurna Asabe, Tudun Bujuwa, Tudun Fulani and its surrounding is led by Auwalu Isa of Tudun Fulani quarters.

    According to him, Isa, who is a jail bird was just released from prison custody for armed robbery after having served four years jail term, he now led other gang, comprising Nasiru  Yayaha of Kurna Asabe quarters, who is another jail bird and was released from prison after serving eight month jail term for a crime.

    Another armed robbery suspects, Ukasha Ibrahim, Shehu Rabiu, Samshudeen Abdullah, Abubakar Abdullahi, Bashir Isa, among others were arrested at various flash points for attacking innocent citizens and dispossessing them of their belongings, worth millions of naira.

    Magaji said they were also able to burst kidnappers syndicate, led by Jabir Usman Sule and Bashir Aminu of Cherinchi Gabas Dorayi quarters in the metropolis were arrested for criminally conspiring and kidnapping a four-year old victim by dropping a note for a ransom of N2 million  from his father or else they would kill the boy.

    However, based on coordinated efforts of our detectives led to the rescue of the victim safely, without paying any ransom, while the two suspects were arrested.

    He said during interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime in addition to two other kidnappings of some children in their neighborhood.

    So far, according to him, there rescue victims were identified and investigation is in progress, while the suspect would soon be arraigned in court.

    Ganduje urges Nigerians in Diaspora to invest in Nigeria

    Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has called on the Nigerian Chambers of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture ( KACCIMA ) to woo Nigerians in the Diaspora to come and invest in the country.

    The appeal was made in a statement by Alhaji Abba Anwar, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor in Kano on Friday.

    He said Ganduje made the call when Coalition of Northern Chambers of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture, paid him a courtesy visit in Kano.

    According to him, the state Deputy Governor, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, received the delegation on behalf of the governor at the Government House.

    “Nigerians in Diaspora can comfortably come and invest in the country for the economic growth and development of the country,” he said.

    Ganduje said it was high time for the chambers of commerce to serve as channels through which those in Diaspora could return home and invest.

    “There are huge funds lying there with Nigerians residing in those countries,” Ganduje said.

    He assured that Kano State Government would receive any serious investor ready for business, adding that “when you follow this way, I am sure there will be significant improvement in that area”.

    “As Kano and Lagos states make difference in the way of paving way for ease of doing business, the two states have already contributed immensely to the national index.”

    While commending them for the cordial relationship existing between the Coalition and the state government, the governor said it was the cardinal point of his administration since 2015 to develop the economy through partnership with the private sector.

    “We believe in public and private partnership, hence our decision to work with private investors to develop the state economy,” Ganduje said.

    In her remarks, the leader of the delegation, Hajiya Sa’adatu Iya, said Kano had been a strong pillar in the development of the association.

    She urged the government to revive the industries that had gone moribund for many decades, to boost economic growth and development in the state.

    She said the team was in Kano for the 31st Conference of the association to discuss issues related to the development of the body and chart a new course for its survival.
