    Kano begins payment of scholarship to 23,000 students

    The Kano State Government on Wednesday commenced payment of N300 million scholarship allowance to 23,987 students in various Nigerian universities and other institutions of higher learning in the country.

    Prof Fatima Umar, the Executive Secretary of the State Scholarship Board, disclosed this while briefing newsmen in Kano.

    Umar said the payment was part of the debt inherited from the immediate past administration that failed to pay the scholarship allowances from 2011 to 2015.

    She said that the payment was for 2013/14 academic session, adding that the board had already paid N360 million outstanding for the 2012/13 academic session to 24,901 students.

    According to her, the payment was for the Kano state indigenes studying various programmes in 55 institutions across the country.

    “Since 2011 to 2015, the immediate past government did not pay scholarship to our internal students throughout its tenure. This had incurred a huge debt over the current administration.

    “We have since begun the payment for the 2012/13 academic session. We disbursed N360 million to 24,901 students then.

    “From today, we are beginning the payment for the 2013/14 academic session. We will disburse N300 million to 23,987 students studying in 55 institutions across the country, ” she said

    Umar however, warned that any student that failed to access the payment should blame him/herself, affirming that the problem could happen if a student provided wrong account number, or failed to issue Bank Verification Number (BVN), or had a dormant account.

    She said the state government would continue to pay the scholarship as part of effort to improve the standard of education, adding that government would continue to support indigent students to acquire education.

    “In the scholarship programme, Ganduje administration has shown more concern than any other administration in the history of Kano,” she said.

    Motorists lament as fuel scarcity bites hard in Kano

    Motorists and commuters in the ancient city of Kano are now experiencing untold hardship, following the acute fuel scarcity.

    Long queues have dotted filling stations, in anticipation of motorists possible selling of fuel to them.

    It was observed that most filling stations within and outside the state owned by both independent and major marketers sell their fuel above the stipulated price.

    In some filling stations the pump price rose between N180 to N200 per litre. While at the black market is sold between N1000 to N1200 per gallon against the normal N650.

    However, most motorists and commuters attributed the biting fuel scarcity hoarding, which usually comes up during festivities and urged the federal government to urgently do something about it before is too late.

    Bus drivers and tricycle operators have also increased their transport fares from N50 to N100, depending on the distance, forcing commuters to trekking for those who could not avoid it.

    A motorists lament the poor handling of the issues affecting the people on the fuel scarcity as people now sleep at filling stations in search of the product.

    Alhaji popoola, who to this reporter said many filling stations have adjusted their meters by selling it at exorbitant price and on the federal government to come to the rescue of Nigerians.

    The Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, has approved the appointment of Malam Umar Sa’id Tudun Wada as the new Managing Director of Kano State Radio Corporation.

    Announcing the appointment on Thursday in Kano the Commissioner of Information, Malam Mohammed Garba said Tudun Wada replaced the former Managing Director, Hajiya Sa’adatu Muhammad Babaji, who was appointed as Special Adviser, Women Mobilization.

    The new Managing Director has been a professional broadcaster, media manager and consultant who served in various capacities in media organizations in the country and abroad.

    He was the General Manager Operations at Freedom Radio, Kano, Executive Director at Dandal Kura Radio, Maiduguri in Borno.

    The new MD was also a Principal Editor at the then CTV now Abubakar Rimi Television (ARTV) , International Broadcaster with Voice of America, freelance correspondent with Hausa and English services of Deutsche-Welle and Editor, Concern Magazine.

    He also served twice as Special Assistant, Media and Publicity to former Gov. Rabi’u Kwankwaso as well as Secretary, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Kano State Council, among others.

    According to the statement, the two appointments are with immediate effect.

    Gunmen attack Kano town, kill one, others injured

    Suspected armed robbers, Monday reportedly attacked Garo town in Kabo Local Government Area of Kano State, killing one person, while two others suffered varying degree of injuries.

    According to an eyewitness account, Abdulmumuni Abubakar Tsanyawa, the suspected robbers, earlier targeted a businessman in the town to attack him but unfortunately, for them, the bizman was not within the neighbourhood.

    Following the absence of their target, they promptly raided and set ablaze five shops, destroying properties, worth millions of naira.

    According to him, the attack, which started at about 11 pm, forced residents to flee the area to safe haven.

    Confirming the robbery attack, the Spokesman of the Kano State Police Command, DSP Musa Magaji Majiya, said: ”Some robbers invaded Garo town in Kabo Local Government Area of the State. Their motive was to attack a businessman in the area but unfortunately, they failed to find their target.”

    Majia, explained that the robbers opted to attack shops, within the town, razing five shops in the process.

    He said, no sooner the police received a distress call than some crack police officers were drafted to the scene, during which one of the robbers was gunned down, while the other two in a desperate attempt to escape suffered fractures on their legs.

    However, he said investigations has commenced, stressing that the police is determined to nab the fleeing accomplices.

    IPMAN lauds FG’s commencement of oil exploration in five states

    The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria ( IPMAN ) in Kano State has commended the Federal Government for starting oil exploration in Sokoto, Benue, Borno, Bauchi and Nasarawa states.

    The IPMAN chairman in the state, Alhaji Bashir Dan-Malam, made the commendation while speaking to newsmen shortly after the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the association in Kano on Wednesday.

    “The oil exploration which the Federal Government had started in five states mentioned above will ensure their economic growth and development and that of the country at large,” he said.

    The IPMAN chairman, who called for continued support to the NNPC, also applauded the Federal Government for sustaining regularity in petrol supply across the country.

    He said with the present administration’s commitment toward addressing challenges facing the sector and exemplary leadership of the NNPC Group Managing Director, Dr Maikanti Baru, fuel scarcity had now become history in the country.

    “Before now, people used to accuse marketers of fuel crisis in the country but scarcity of petroleum products has become a thing of the past due to the Federal Government’s commitment toward addressing the problems facing the sector,” he said.

    He said the present administration under President Muhammadu Buhari deserved to be commended for tackling the various challenges facing the oil and gas sector and ensuring steady supply of petrol in the country.

    He also commended the NNPC for planning to make available petroleum products, especially, petrol in  all the 21 depots ahead of the forthcoming Christmas and New Year festivals.

    “This singular action is worthy of commendation in view of what we used to experience in the past at the end of every year in the country.

    Dan-Malam said with the current positive development in the sector, the country would soon commence exporting petrol to other countries.

    Kano seeks support to revamp education sector

    The Kano State Government has solicited the support of Old Boys Associations of various secondary schools in the state in its efforts to revamp the education sector.

    The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works, Housing and Transport, Alhaji Ibrahim Ahmad, made the appeal when he received National Executive Council members of Government Arabic Senior Secondary School Gwale Old Boys Association.

    A statement by the ministry issued on Wednesday in Kano said the permanent secretary urged such associations to initiates projects and programmes that would add value to the quality of education imparted to students.

    According to the statement, Ahmad disclosed that the government has approved the release of N37.8 million for the completion of the school assembly hall initiated by the association.

    He said that work on the project would be executed through direct labour.

    The permanent secretary commended Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje for approving the release of the money and urged the association to support the administration move the state forward.

    Earlier, National Chairman of the association, Malam Nuhu Yahaya thanked the government for the gesture and pledged more support for the government.

    As part of plans to boost tourism activities, revenue and Gross Domestic Products ( GDP ) of the state, the Kano State Government says it has concluded plans to hold kids’ festival between January and February 2018.

    Mr Alli Talli, Deputy Director, Kano State Ministry of Tourism, Commerce and Industry made this known in Lagos on Wednesday.

    He said that the second edition of the planned festival would focus on educating, enlightening and exposing children to Nigerian culture in general and Kano traditions/culture.

    Talli said that the forthcoming festival would be memorable, adding that the state government had showed commitment to make it a big event.

    “The maiden edition is a great one but the second edition will be bigger as proper planning is ongoing to make it a memorable one,” he said.

    He also said that no fewer than 1,000 schools across the nation’s are expected to participate in the festival.

    According to him, children between 4 years and above are expected to participate in the festival.

    “The students are expected to come from all parts of the country.Several schools have indicated interest to participate in the kids’ festival,” he said.

    The deputy director said the purpose of the event was also to unite all the children across the country, irrespective of tribe, state or ethnic group.

    “The event will bring about cultural integration and expose the children to culture, arts and lifestyle of people of kano and indeed the history of Nigeria.’’

    According to him, the proposed event will hold in Kano with tour of tourism sites in the state and will also  showcase the role of kano state in the history of Nigeria.

    He mentioned some of the activities for to be featured in the festival to include; cultural dance, drama, poetry, musical shows, visits to side attractions and learning of the history of kano state and its role in Nigerian history.

    Talli assured potential tourists and visitors of adequate security and a befitting tourism experience during the event.

    “The security in the state is under control and the government is working closely with the security agencies to ensure safety of lives and property in the city.”

    He said that the state government had renovated and upgraded all the tourist sites across the state to make it more befitting for tourists.

    Kano spends N208m to empower 5,200 tea sellers

    The Kano State Government said it has spent N208 million on the empowerment of 5,200 tea sellers in the state.

    Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje made the announcement on Saturday during an empowerment programme at the Government House, kano.

    Ganduje said that the beneficiaries were selected from 484 wards in the 44 local government areas of the state.

    He said that the gesture was to help in improving beneficiaries with means of livelihood and that of their defendants.

    “Our government attaches so much importance to empowerment programme because at the end, the beneficiaries will be self-reliant, thereby improving the economic capacity of the state,” he said.

    The governor gave each of the beneficiaries N40, 000 worth of empowerment packages to improve their business.

    The items include, Bournvita, milk, milo,noodles, margarine, pasta, tea bags,bread, eggs and cooking oil.

    Ganduje also urged the beneficiaries to always keep their business environment clean to ensure good hygiene.

    He then advised the tea sellers to shun illicit substances and other related crimes.

    The state’s Commissioner for Local Government, Murtala Sulengaro, said that the programme was designed to improve their living standards.

    He commended the governor for his foresight in empowering youths in the state.

    Ali Sani, who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, thanked the governor for the gesture and promised to use the items judiciously.

    Monkey pox: Kano confirms suspected victim

    Dr Kabir Getso, the Kano State Commissioner for Health, has confirmed that a suspected case of Monkey Pox has been recorded in Bebeji Local Government Area of the state.

    The Commissioner, who stated this while briefing newsmen on Saturday in Kano, disclosed that blood sample of the victim had been sent to Abuja for clinical verification.

    He added that, “one of the symptoms of the disease was noticed in the patient, but we are suspecting that the diseases is more of Chickens pox than monkey pox”.

    He said the suspected victim has been isolated and put on intensive clinical watch until the result of the sample was received.

    “The State also identified 60 people who had contacts with the victims and all of them have been quarantine,” he said.

    The Commissioner said that a team has put the entire area where the suspected case was recorded under clinical watch, adding that the state has establishment a special clinic to handle any outbreak.

    “For now only 11 States are affected by the monkeypox disease and 94 persons are the victims out of which only six are confirmed.

    “The Kano case from Bebeji Local Government is yet to be confirmed. The blood sampling will take three weeks before it is ready,” he said.

    Suspected Monkey Pox case in Kano

    Indications emerged on Thursday that the dreaded Monkey Pox disease has broken out in Kano state.

    Unconfirmed reports say a suspected patient is lying critical ill at Tiga General Hospital  in Bebeji Local Government Area of the state.

    Though efforts made to reach the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim Getso proved abortive as at the time of filling this report, The Nation reports that in a Press Conference last Monday, Getso warned Kano residents against the Monkey Pox epidemic, urging them to apply personal hygiene.

    He further stated that already, the state government has made available a hospital and adequate facilities to take care of patients infected by the disease.
