Lawmakers decries dropping of female nominees in Kano

Nigeria elected Female lawmakers under the aegis Conference of Female Parliamentarians (CONFEPA) and the Federation of Female Lawyers (FIDA) Thursday condemned decision of some political leaders and ulamas in Kano state to drop two female nominees that the state governor, Abdulahi Ganduje, nominated to be local government area chairpersons.

The female lawmakers said the rejection of the nominees, Architect Binta Fatima Yahaya and Hasiya Ismail Mukhtar, by Kano political leaders allegedly based on religious sentiments was not verifiable.

Speaking at a press conference in Benin City, Chairperson of CONFEPA who also the Deputy Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, Hon (Mrs) Elizabeth Ativie flanked by the Secretary, Hon (Princess) Titlayo Akerele from Ekiti State House of Assembly said the decision to drop the women negates constitutional and global charters that kick against discrimination against women.

Hon Ativie stated that it was a plot to “undermine and subvert the rights of women in Kano State”.

Ativie noted that it was shocking that there were no clear reasons for dropping the two women.

According to her, “We wish to state clearly that the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which is the supreme law of our land guarantees freedom for all, including women to aspire and occupy political positions.

“It should be placed on record that several international treaties and conventions which Nigeria is signatory to and some which have been domesticated in Nigeria abolish all forms of discrimination against women and guarantee their freedom to aspire and be appointed to any political, social, religious office.

“The reason given by the Kano State political leaders and the Ulamas is that women in Islam do not lead. But this is not verifiable as some other Muslim dominated countries across the world have had female heads of state, Prime Ministers and Presidents.

She commended Governor Ganduje for nominating the women and urged the Kano State House of Assembly to screen the woman nominee without further delay.

Ativie called on the Minister of Women Affairs to intervene on the issue. “It should be told that God made them male and female and none was inferior to the other.
