Nigeria, Benin Republic open dry port trade office in Kano

Nigeria and Benin Republic on Wednesday jointly opened the Tsamiya Dry Port Trade Office in Kano State.

The commissioning was held at the new office, located at No. ‘A’ Magaji Rumfa Road, GRA Kano.

Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, said the occasion marked a crucial step towards the re-opening of the Segbana-Tsamiya border in Kebbi State.

Adeniyi, who was represented by the Assistant Comptroller, Sambo Dangaladima, recalled that sometime in May, a delegation from the Federal Government engaged in an inter-ministerial meeting with its counterparts from Benin republic to discuss issues of importance regarding the opening of the Segbana-Tsamiya border in Kebbi with the aimed to fast track the operationalisation of the border post focussing on logistics, security measures, economic impact among other issues.

“Today, we are witnessing the opening of a trade office here in Kano, which is a major commercial hub as a part of a broader strategy to enhance trade facilitation and also a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to boost regional trade as well as economic integration between Nigeria and Benin Republic,” he said.

He explained the establishment of the trade office in Kano, a major commercial hub underscores the importance of Kano as a key centre of commerce and highlights importance of streamlining business processes in the region, including the establishment of an export terminal to support local industries as well as aligning with the Federal Government’s broader goals of addressing food security and strengthening economic ties within Nigeria and across its borders.

He added that under Adeniyi’s leadership, the Nigeria Customs Service remains committed to implementing and enforcing the policies and directives of the Federal Government of Nigeria to achieve economic growth and development in line with the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

  • Kano: A governor’s many detractors

    Kano: A governor’s many detractors

    By Mu’azu Adamu

“Our dear state, Kano is one of the oldest in Nigeria, a state with rich culture and history, a state that enjoys tremendous amount of respect all over the world. A state that sets all the good examples for others to follow. All these were thrown to the winds by the last administration… This perception has to change. And the time to change it is now. We shall work together to change this narrative and promote Kano positively.”

These were the words of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf before an unprecedented crowd of supporters and well-wishers just after he had taken the oath of office, at the Sani Abacha Stadium on May 29, 2023. True to his belief, I believe that there is a breath of fresh air around Kano within the one year three months of his stewardship of arguably the most populous state in Nigeria. Citizens and residents of Kano now have the comfort of seeing so many ongoing infrastructural projects that cut across different sectors, the peace of knowing that their resources are judiciously used for scholarships, gratuity and pension and empowerment initiatives. Most importantly, the people of the state now know that every point of order they raise regarding the handling of the business of leadership goes straight to the right ears and is not met by a tone-deaf leadership that feels to obligation to be accountable to its people.

After a fierce seven-year struggle, the NNPP-led government came in with a lot of promise to right the wrongs and instil a new sense of hope and confidence in the elected authority in Kano. Governor Yusuf made the Kano State Reformatory Institute, Kiru, his first port of call after inauguration. This institute, established by the Kwankwaso-led administration to reform and reintegrate drug addicts had been abandoned for long. This was the story of other specialized institutes all over the state between 2015 and 2023. Governor Yusuf has now successfully renovated the institute with enrolment to begin soon. This has been replicated for the 25 other institutes in the state.

One thing that stands out for the Yusuf-led government is its dedication to education. The first major initiative that the government pursued after its inception was the sponsorship of over 1000 first-class graduates to different institutions in India and Uganda. This will not only add to the pool of excellent masters’ degree holders in Kano, but will open them to being gainfully employed in different sectors around the world. The declaration of the State of Emergency on Education by the governor exposed two attributes of himself; the admission that a problem exists is not something you could easily get out of many of the present crop of leaders that we have in this Nigeria. The open desire to embrace the shortcomings and correct them is also a demonstration of uncommon leadership.

The governor immediately set to work by permanently employing 5,632 teachers under the Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) programme, a World Bank initiative which aims at increasing equitable access for out-of-school children in Nigeria and improve literacy in focus states. The governor equally reopened all public boarding schools closed by the Abdullahi Ganduje administration. As we speak, there is an ongoing drive all around the state where classrooms are renovated, under the Community Re-orientation Committee (CRC). According to the governor, out of the 42,516 total classrooms available in basic schools in the state, a mere 22% meet the most basic standards of habitability.

One sector that is having a breath of life is road infrastructure provision. The first step taken by Governor Yusuf was to mobilise contractors back to work, this has enabled the governor to complete the first phase of the WujuWuju road, the fully solar-powered 5-kilometre road in Gwarzo local government is a model for rural rebirth, as work is ongoing in most local government areas of the state to replicate it. We are seeing work ongoing on important roads in the state like the Lodge Road-Race Course Road, Unguwar Dabai road, the 15km road from Madobi town to Kubarachi to Kura, and the 70km road from Madobi Bridge to Madobi town, through Yako to Kafin Mai Yaki culminating in Kiru. These are few examples of life-changing projects that the administration is currently pursuing. There is a recent resurgence of nightlife in Kano which does not come as a coincidence. Governor Yusuf has made conscious effort to energise roads all over the metropolis with solar powered streetlights; this has not only brought life and beautified roads all over the state, but helped in curbing crime like phone-snatching that was rife on the metropolitan roads. The initiative has also encouraged the people of the state to go about their legitimate business through late hours.

All these have however not come easy for Governor Yusuf. After laying siege on his concentration to governance through the needless court battle that took more than seven good months, the enemies of Kano have found their haven in the Kano Emirate saga. On May 23, the governor, Abba Yusuf, reinstated the deposed Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, in fulfilment of his campaign promise. Yusuf also signed the bill repealing the State Emirate Council Law 2019 that gave the state five emirate councils. This move was met by an incredible opposition in Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero’s continuing occupation of the Nassarawa Guest House.

It is therefore very pertinent that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu calls those that are providing the deposed emir with security and financial backing to order. Governor Yusuf’s tenure is just a fraction in Kano’s history, and that history will not forget if he folds his arms and allow this imbroglio.

The good people of Kano will remember students whose tuition fees were settled by Governor Yusuf, the pensioners that are receiving their gratuities without cutting any corner, the millions of women and children that are receiving free healthcare, the thousands of farmers that got free fertiliser, the children that are finding hope in the renovation of their schools and everyone positively touched by his compassionate leadership.

Each government comes with its peculiarity; Governor Yusuf holds a lot of promise to restore Kano’s lost glory. He is focused on the goal, and we must have his back to steer us to prosperity.

Kano seeks justice for 9-year-old girl raped to death by chemist operator

Kano State Commissioner for Women, Children, and the Disabled, Aisha Lawan Saji, is seeking justice for the late 9-year-old girl, Rumaisa Sadiq, who was raped to death by a chemist operator.

The chemist operator (name undisclosed) allegedly raped the deceased minor to death in Jaba, Fanisau area of Kano state, witnesses said.

The victim’s father, Alhaji Sadiq, said he had taken her daughter (Rumaisa) to the chemist operator to treat her for malaria, but rather than save her life, the culprit subjected her to horrendous sexual abuse and fatally raped her to death.

The deceased’s mother is yet to recover from the shocks of the ugly homicide, it was learnt.

The Commissioner for Women, Children, and the Disabled (Saji) on Sunday paid a condolence visit to the deceased’s family.

Saji condemned the unholy act and vowed to follow up the case to a logical conclusion.

Founder of Hidaya Ahmad VVF Aid Foundation, Nafisa Salisu Ahmad, who informed the commissioner about the rape, disclosed that the case was already before a court of law, adding that the case is attracting concerns from some human rights organisations.

The commissioner vowed that despite moves by some individuals to cover up or divert the case, the Abba Yusuf administration shall ensure justice for the deceased little Rumaisa, to serve as deterrence to other paedophiles fond of perpetrating the act.

A statement from the ministry reads: “Despite moves by some individuals to infuse diverters into the reported case of a fatal rape against 9-year old Rumaisa Sadiq, the Commissioner of Ministry of Women, Children and the Disabled, Hajiya Aisha Lawan Saji Rano has insisted that there must be justice for the late victim and her family.

“Speaking during a condolence visit to the family house of the victim, the Commissioner said, there must be justice for the little girl who lost her life simply because someone chose to display his animalistic instinct on her.

“The full and quick dispensation of justice, in this case, is necessary to serve as a lesson and deterrence to others like this grown-up person who carried out this merciless act against an innocent nine-year-old girl.

“The Kano State Government under the justice-loving Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, will follow up the case in court to a conclusive end.

“In addition to this assurance, the Commissioner also conveyed the governor’s condolences to the family and offered her assistance to the family, which included a bag of 50kg rice, a bag of maize, a carton of Macaroni, and a gallon of vegetable oil.”

Group accuses Kano governor’s aide of peddling fake news about Senator Barau

A Kano based group on Saturday accused the spokesman of the Governor of Kano State, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, of allegedly spreading fake news about the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin.

The group, The Maliya Media Reporters, in a s statement by its Chairman, Comrade Adamu Abdullahi Karkasaraa in Abuja, said the report titled: “Ganduje loses grip as 44 former Council Chairmen defect to Barau APC Faction,” the spokesman allegedly asked reporters to attribute the baseless and mischievous news item to unnamed sources.

The statement reads: “The Maliya Media Reporters have observed fake news posted on a WhatsApp Platform, Kano News Room, by Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the spokesperson of the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf.

“The story, titled: ‘Ganduje Loses Grip As 44 Former Council Chairmen Defect to Barau APC Faction,’ is baseless, misinformation and mischief by the spokesperson, probably acting on behalf of the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf.

“A screenshot of the post indicates that Tofa shared the story on the platform at 4:32 pm on Friday, urging journalists to attribute the story to anonymous sources.

“Instead, as the source of the story, Tofa should have released the story as an official statement from Kano Government House, bearing his signature.

“We commend the journalists for their professionalism and commitment to the ethical standards of journalism. We also urge editors and publishers of online and traditional media organisations to take note of this fake news.

“To clarify, on Thursday, the former Chairmen from the 44 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Kano State, led by Alhaji Muhammad Baffa Takai, the former Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Kano State chapter, were in Abuja to felicitate with the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I Jibrin, on the establishment of the North West Development Commission (NWDC).

“Specifically, the grassroots politicians hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for assenting to the NWDC bill sponsored by Senator Barau. Throughout the meeting, there was no discussion on APC or any other political party in Kano or at the national level; instead, the meeting focused on how to attract more projects to the state.

“To this effect, we urge Tofa to desist from spreading falsehood and fake news that would create disunity among our leaders in Kano and beyond.

  • Relief in Kano as Yusuf relaxes curfew

Relief in Kano as Yusuf relaxes curfew

Kano Governor Abba Yusuf has relaxed the curfew he enforced to stop escalation of violence following violent protests in the ancient city.

The Governor’s decision comes after cyommissioner of Police, Salman Garba, reported that normalcy has been restored in the state and there are no longer violent incidents.

The police assured there would be no more riots after arresting 873 suspects for various offenses, including criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, riot, theft, mischief and arson during and after the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protest.

A huge quantity of items stolen during the violent protest has also been recovered.

The curfew was initially imposed to run 24 hours. It was later relaxed by 12 hours -to run from dusk to dawn (6pm to 6am) when the security situation improved.

Governor Yusuf on Monday said he deemed it necessary to lift the curfew to allow residents go about their daily activities without restriction as peace and tranquility return to the northern commercial nerve centre.

“The Governor’s decision to lift the curfew is a testament to the efforts of the security agencies and the cooperation of the public in maintaining peace and order in the state,” the police said.

Kano residents welcomed the decision, expressing relief and joy that they can now go about their daily work.

The curfew had affected many households, especially those who rely on daily ‘hustle’ to put food on the table, it was learnt.

“The lifting of the curfew means Kano has returned to its usual peaceful status, one Alh. Adamu, whose trade is buying and selling of cereals, told The Nation.

Governor Yusuf also on Monday commended the security agencies and the public for their cooperation and efforts in maintaining peace and order.

He urged everyone to continue to support the government for continued stability and progress of the state.

APC expresses concern over alleged diversion, rebranding of FG palliatives in Kano

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State on Saturday expressed concern over the recurring incidents of alleged diversion of palliatives by officials of the ruling New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) administration in the state.

Kano APC Chairman, Alh Abdullahi Abbas, who blew the alarm, threatened legal action, calling for a thorough investigation and prosecution of the culprits.

Abbas, in his statement, asserted that “Government’s failure to take necessary action against its officials found to be involved in the diversion of the palliatives could be interpreted as acts being perpetrated with its tacit support.”

He said it was unfortunate that last week, hundreds of bags of rice labelled “Federal Government Food Security Program,” were discovered at a private school, Wada Sagagi Islamic School owned by the Chief of Staff, Government House, Kano, Shehu Wada Sagagi.

Abbas observed that, with the acts, the people have yet to see the impact of President Bola Tinubu’s efforts in Kano State as evidenced in the level of frustration and expression of anger against the government.

Abbas insisted that no convincing argument was put forward by Sagagi as to how the bags of rice which form part of the grains donated to the Kano State government to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal among the poor and vulnerable residents were found in his private residence turned Islamiyya School.

“In December last year, one Tasiu Al’amin-Roba, allegedly working for the Secretary to the State Government, Baffa Abdullahi Bichi, who was identified as Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Cabinet Office, was arrested over alleged diversion of the state’s palliatives.

”The suspects was found repackaging the rice and maize at a warehouse located at Sharada, and was subsequently arrested with a promise to drag him to court.

“The government of Kano State is in the habit of rebranding and repackaging some parts of the grains they wanted to distribute, mostly to their members with the picture of the governor and logo of the NNPP.

“In September last year, the Managing Director of the state Agricultural Supply Company (KASCO), Dr. Tukur Dayyabu Minjibir, was suspended for alleged involvement in an inappropriate sale of grains belonging to the Kano State government.

“It is therefore very important that the Kano state government should not stop at suspension or investigation. All actions taken should be concluded by prosecuting all those found to have been involved in these scandals to serve as deterrent.”

The party chairman described the actions of the NNPP government as a deliberate attempt to rubbish the effort of the administration of President Bola Tinubu in supporting the people during this trying period.

  • The abomination in Kano

    The abomination in Kano

    • By Yusuf Gaddafi

Sir: Youths in Nigeria embarked a nationwide demonstration under the banner “END BAD GOVERNANCE IN NIGERIA.” While there are many issues that contribute to the country’s hunger and starvation, some of the most commonly mentioned ones are inflation, insecurity, kidnapping in the northwest state, and deregulation of fuel prices.

Nonetheless, Nigeria still manages to maintain peaceful living despite being a multi-cultural and multi-religious nation. North is dominated by Hausa/Fulani which are predominantly Muslims. Although Kano is the Hausa language’s birthplace and the centre of Islamic affairs in Nigeria, most of its inhabitants have in most recent time, strayed from Islamic doctrine.

What occurred in Kano State, particularly the orgy of arson, looting and destruction of public and private property is an abomination to Islam and Hausa culture in general. These events also demonstrate ascent of immorality across the board and the fact that the country’s problems are not solely caused by the government.

What could have unleashed the demonstrators on the DIP Centre, designed to ensure that thousands of young people gain employment through digital skills? And this is despite their being aware that it is the only one in the north? Why is the protest characterised by looting and shoplifting? And the street lights being destroyed? Why did people resort to breaking into businesses and shops?

Plateau State should receive the award for best protest of the year. They managed their protest in a way that attracted international attention; theirs remained peaceful and organized in spite of religious and ethnic differences.

I would like the Nigerian government to respond seriously to the issues and the needs of the people to stave of further destruction of lives and property and to prevent their spread to other states in the country. No serious and responsible government can be expected to tolerate the activities of a vicious mob sworn to inflict pain and torture on the rest of the citizens. As our clerics have been telling us for a long time, we must embrace love and humanity and return to the original design of the Almighty Allah.

I pray that my dear Nigeria would one day be revitalized and rebuilt.

Kano state government on Tuesday, August 6, relaxed the 24-hour curfew imposed by 12 hour.

The police commissioner said “Governor Yusuf, after intensive deliberations with members of the state security council, decided to review the curfew from 6 am to 6 pm.”
