NNPP, APC, PDP, other parties kick against planned protests in Kano

A coalition of political parties in Kano state, including the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have jointly cautioned against the proposed nationwide protests targeting the federal and state governments.

During a press conference in Dakata Ward, Nassarawa Local Government Area, party chairmen and officials urged for dialogue and patience to allow the government to address the identified challenges.

Notable attendees included Umar Usman, APC chairman of Dakata Ward, and Sale Danbo from the NNPP, among other party leaders.

“While we fully recognize the democratic right of citizens to voice their grievances and hold their leaders accountable, we believe that the timing and nature of these protests are premature and could lead to unintended consequences that may hinder national progress.

“The federal and state governments are barely one year into their four-year terms. It is crucial to recognise that the performance of any administration cannot be fairly judged based on just one year of governance.

“Effective and sustainable development requires time, and the current government is in the process of implementing numerous policies aimed at long-term progress.

“Immediate judgments and reactions may undermine the potential benefits that these policies could yield in the coming years,” Usman said.

He noted that the federal government has taken significant steps to mitigate the economic challenges resulting from the removal of petroleum subsidies.

According to Usman, the measures include the provision of CNG Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to ease transportation, truckloads of grain and other essential food items to alleviate hunger, increased allocation to states and local governments to boost the financial capacity of local administrations as well as an increase in the minimum wage to support the working population, among other interventions.

Usman said: “While it is natural to feel frustrated and seek immediate change, we urge all citizens to consider constructive engagement as a more effective means of driving progress.

“Dialogue, peaceful advocacy, and collaboration with the government can yield positive results without the accompanying risks of large-scale protests.

“We encourage civil society groups, professional bodies, and individuals to engage with the government through established channels to voice their concerns and suggest viable solutions.

“We acknowledge the genuine concerns and hardships faced by many citizens. However, it is essential to give the current administration the necessary time to implement its policies and deliver on its promises.

“Our nation stands at a critical juncture, and unity, patience, and constructive dialogue are vital to navigating these challenging times.

“We must not overlook the potential danger of the proposed nationwide protests being hijacked by non-state actors to perpetrate violence, vandalism, and civil unrest. Recent history from nations such as Libya, Egypt, and Kenya teaches us that mass protests can sometimes spiral out of control, leading to widespread chaos, loss of lives, and destruction of property.

“Let us prioritise the stability and progress of our nation by allowing the government the time required to implement its policies and deliver on its commitments.”

“Together, through peaceful and constructive engagement, we can achieve the prosperity and development we all desire.”

  • Gang-think from Kano

    Gang-think from Kano

Want an inkling into a gang’s thinking?  And were that gang in government, with a manic obsession to extract revenge, no matter how horribly it bounces back to hurt it?

Then, race to Kano!  There: what a shrink would find, examining Governor Abba Yusuf and his gang, government or top party hierarchs, would be interesting!

Or how else do you x-ray this infantile, self-serving, unconscionable threat by Hashimu Dungurawa, Kano State chair of the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP), linking the Emirate crisis, which Governor Yusuf has clearly bungled, to sweepstakes in 2027?

Hear his blather to President Bola Tinubu: “Your perceived stance on the ongoing Kano Emirate tussle would surely work against you in the 2027 presidential polls,” he roared, “because if you think you can use it to secure grounds in Kano, when the chips are down it will dawn on you that you have made costly mistakes.”

What does this empty yammer even mean?  But wait for the ultimate blackmail: the President should ensure that the “deposed” Emir is banished from Kano!  In other words, the desperado wanted licit forces to press illicit — or even putatively illegal — acts, since the so called deposition of Emir Aminu Ado Bayero hangs in the balance, in a legal challenge still running?

Read Also: Emirship tussle not reason for delay in resumption, says Kano assembly

Were Dungurawa some playwright in some Ancient Greek drama, he would just work a deus-ex-machina into his self-serving plot — and the police made a forceful dash to Emir Ado Bayero’s mini-palace, and they forcefully ejected and banished him, and Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II reigned happily ever after!

What a dream!  What a child!  Yet, this one is NNPP’s Kano chairman, throwing childhood tantrums?

Well, reality check: Governor Abba and gang caused the Kano debacle.  Let them clear it in the court, as penance for trampling on the same law, which created the office of the governor.  Abuja was never part of it.  Let Kano clear up own mess.

Still, Dungurawa’s blather is hardly surprising.  When Yusuf’s win was under legal challenge, an uncouth fellow in his cabinet threatened the tribunal judges.  When the self-entrapping Emirate crisis first broke out, Yusuf’s deputy ran his mouth, lying that Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser (NSA) was plotting against Kano, simply because the police won’t do the governor’s rash bidding.  Later, it was Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso himself hallucinating over some federal plot over Kano.

Let the Kano Emirate process play itself out in court.  As to the political fallouts, Kano voters themselves see, from the reckless acts of Abba and co — the initial demolition spree; and now, this avoidable Kano Emirate crisis — who is deserving or undeserving of their mandate.

Meanwhile to Dungurawa, happy fresh 2027 hallucinations!

  • Kano to hold conference on education recovery

Kano to hold conference on education recovery

Kano state government on Friday, July 5, revealed its plan to convene an education recovery conference on 10th and 11th July.

Through the proposed conference, the state government said it will create a platform for technical deliberations on education access, quality, and equity in the state.

A statement by Alhaji Tajuddeen Gambo, the Special Adviser to the Kano State Governor on Education, said the United Kingdom’s Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO) in Nigeria and Arewa Consultative Forum are supporting the state government on the conference.

Gambo, who is also the Chairman of the Education Recovery Conference Planning Committee, said the conference will feature thought leaders, political actors, diplomats, educators, private sector players, advocates and policymakers, focusing on addressing significant education sector challenges in Kano State.

“There will be keynote speeches, lead paper presentation, plenaries and breakout sessions, all carefully structured to address different areas of challenges, using an interactive and inclusive approach,” he explained.

The theme of the education conference to be held was given as: ‘Repositioning Education in Kano State: Navigating the Path to Excellence.’

“The conference is designed to address critical challenges on education access and equity, chart a reform pathway and foster partnerships in transforming education in the state.

“During the two-day event, stakeholders will work together to identify sustainable and scalable solutions that will reposition and improve the education sector in Kano State, ensuring sustainable access to quality education for all.

“The education sector in Kano State, like many parts of Nigeria, faces critical issues that hinder its progress. Currently, there are over 9 million out-of-school children in Nigeria, and Kano State contributes significantly to this figure as the most populous northern state of Nigeria, hence, tackling challenges in Kano is essential to the Education for Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.

Gambo stated that was because of the significant decay in both educational quality and infrastructure in the Kano education sector that led to the declaration of a state of emergency in the sector by Governor Abba Yusuf.

“In recent times, the Kano State Government has demonstrated willingness to tackle educational challenges head on.

“Our administration has commenced a total overhaul, focusing on academic and infrastructure development”, he said, outlining plans for the extensive renovation of all primary and junior secondary schools in the state, soft loans for teachers, initiatives to promote girl-child education and many other interventions.

“Approval for the disbursement of funds has been made to the 44 local government areas of Kano for the renovation of classrooms and construction of new ones.

“The Kano aspiration is an ambitious roadmap to kickstart the journey to quality and accessible education in the state,” Gambo said.

Ganduje’s probe: FHC asks Kano judges to resign from inquiry panels

A Kano Federal High Court (FHC) has asked Justices Farouk Adamu and Zuwaira Yusuf to withdraw themselves from serving as chairmen of two judicial commissions in Kano State within 48 hours or lose their benefits and allowances.

Adamu heads the state’s Judicial Panel of Inquiry for the Recovery of Misappropriated Public Properties and Assets while Yusuf is in charge of the Commission of Inquiry on the Investigation of Political Violence and Missing Persons in the state.

The two judges were appointed by Governor Abba Yusuf to probe the administration of the immediate-past governor of the state and All Progressives Congress(APC) National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje.

Justice Simon Amobeda of the FHC gave the order while delivering judgment in a case filed by Ganduje, urging the court to stop Governor Yusuf from probing his administration.

Respondents to the suit are the National Judicial Council(NJC), the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation And Fiscal Commission(RMAFC), the state Attorney-General, Justice Adamu and Yusuf.

According to Justice Amobeda, if the two Kano judges failed to resign within two days, the NJC would have no choice but to halt the payments of all allowances and benefits accruable to them from the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the Federation.

He chided the judges for carrying out the functions assigned to them by the state governor in courtrooms.

The judge also frowned at Governor Yusuf’s decision to investigate Ganduje without appealing an earlier judgment by Justice A. Lyman.

Justice Liman had declared that Ganduje can only be investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) or the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) and not by any other commission.

Justice Amobeda, among other declarations, said: “That, by the combined provisions of Sections 153(1)(i) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, CFRN, 1999 (as altered), Paragraph 21(d) of Part I of the Third Schedule Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as altered)and sections 1, 3 and 6 of the Commission of Inquiry Law, Cap. 26, Laws of Kano State, the governor of Kano State has no power to appoint the 4th defendant(Adamu) and 5th defendant(Yusuf) and administer another Oath of Office on them to serve as chairmen of commission of Inquiry constituted by the Governor of Kano State in an office meant for Commissioners of Kano State Government to exercise executive powers assigned to them by the Governor of Kano State and stop them from performing their functions as judges of the High Court of Kano State, without recourse to the first defendant(the NJC).”
