    Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar on Saturday evening cancelled his 68th birthday celebration dinner in Abuja in honour of victims of friday’s Kano Bomb blast.
    Atiku who is a presidential aspirant of the All Progressive Congress ( APC) stated that he could not continue with the celebration when the national mood is that of mourning.
    ” There will be more years to celebrate birthdays, but tonight is a sad and sober one for Nigeria. It’s best we pray and go home.
    ” I appeal to all who are able, to send donations to the victims of the bomb blast and Internally displaced Persons in the North East.” Atiku stated.
    After Christian and Muslim prayers were said for the victims of the bomb blast and terror attacks Atiku left the venue.

  • Kano blast: Muslims will not be intimidated- Emir

    The Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has condemned Friday’s bomb attack at the Kano Central Mosque in which about 120 persons were killed.
    Speaking during a visit to the scene of the incident on Saturday, Sanusi said Muslims in the country will not be intimidated into abandoning their region due to the attacks.
    According to the Emir, from all indications, the attack was planned about two months.
    He directed that the Mosque be washed and cleaned for prayers t continue to hold.

    Attack on Kano Mosque heinous, says Jonathan

    President Goodluck Jonathan has condoled with the people and Government of Kano State over the attack on the Central Mosque in Kano on Friday which he described as heinous.

    In a statement reacting to the incident in which scores of persons were killed, President Jonathan commiserated with all the families who lost their loved ones.

    He called on relief agencies and medical personnel to deploy every possible effort to assist the injured, and the general public to heed the call for the donation of blood by the hospitals where the injured are being treated.

    The President further directed the security agencies to launch a full-scale investigation and to leave no stone unturned until all agents of terror undermining the right of every citizen to life and dignity, are tracked down and brought to justice.

    He reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestation is a despicable and unjustifiable threat to our society and reiterated the determination of the government to continue to take every step to put an end to the reprehensible acts of all groups and persons involved in acts of terrorism.

    He urged calls Nigerians not to despair in this moment of great trial in our nation’s history but to remain united to confront the common enemy.

    According to him, no terrorist act against fellow citizens will destroy the Nigerian spirit to remain positive, resolute and united in the quest for lasting peace and security in the country.

  • Explosion hits Kano Central Mosque

    Multiple explosion rocked Kano central mosque during the Friday Jumaat prayer were many lives were lost and many people sustained various degrees of injuries.

    The explosion caused pandemonium around the area which is housing the palace of the emir of Kano.

    The Nation gathered that the explosion occurred while people were listening to the Friday sermon from the chief Imam of Kano Prof Sani Zahradeen.

    A heavy smoke was said to have engulfed the entire atmosphere immediately after the blast.

    As at time of filing this report, rescue operations was said to be ongoing by good Samaritans while corpses and other injured individuals were rescued to various hospitals for medical attention.

  • Cleric urges patriotism

    The Area Superintendent of The Apostolic Church in Kano,    Pastor Festus Olotu, has admonished Nigerians to tolerate one another and imbibe the spirit of patriotism towards fighting terrorism in the northern parts of the country.

    He spoke last week during the annual convention of the church.

    Olotu said only the collective prayers of Nigerians will enable the nation overcome its daunting challenges.

    Describing the spate of terrorists’ attack in the region as unbearable considering the huge damages of lives and properties, the cleric added that the situation is a spiritual war which requires intensive prayers.

    On the 2015 elections, Olotu urged the non- indigenes in the northern region not to relocate due to fear but remain prayerful as nowhere is crisis-free.

  • Breaking News: Bomb blast rocks Kano

    Multiple bomb blasts on Friday rocked Kano when suspected suicide bomber detonated explosives close to a petrol filling station and security check point in the ancient city.

    Eye witnesses claimed that 15 persons were feared dead, but the Police confirmed six dead and five injured.

  • Kano recruits 1000 teachers

    In its bid to ensure qualitative education at the secondary school level, the Kano State government has recruited over 1, 000 teachers to boost teaching, tutorials and instructions in secondary schools across the state.

    According to the Director-General of the state Secondary Schools Management Board (KSSSMB),  Alhaji Habib El-Yakub, the exercise formed part of the measures taken by the government to fill the vacuum created by teachers who had retired or left the profession in search of greener pastures.

    He said government has also concluded arrangements for the recruitment of a second batch of 1, 900 teachers soon.

    “All these efforts are geared towards ensuring that our secondary schools are equipped with qualified and adequate personnel. This is necessary because of the government’s free education policy introduced last year,” he added.

    He said further that the introduction of free feeding and uniforms in primary schools has attracted many parents, who hitherto refused, to enrol their wards in school.

    According to El-Yakub, the government has also recruited computer teachers for each of the 973 secondary schools under the board as part of renewed effort to ensure that pupils are computer literate.

    He said the board is currently in partnership with over 20 private firms, which specialise in  Information and Communication Technology (ICT), to ensure the full take off of ICT centres in all secondary schools in the state.

    “This is also aimed at making sure that all secondary school pupils are computer literate in view of the modern trend,’’ he added.

    Kano records six polio cases in six months —Health Commissioner

    Kano state has recounted 5 cases of Wild Polio Virus in the last 6 months in the state which now accounts for two per cent global burden even as the government restated dedication to eradicate the scourge of the virus before the end of 2014.

    Addressing Journalists on the backdrop of 2014 world Polio day, the state commissioner for health Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf explained that the fresh 5 cases were discovered in four local government areas.

    Represented by permanent secretary in the ministry Alh. Dahiru Musa, the commissioner noted despite the current status, Kano is winning the war against known factors responsible for initial rejection of polio immunization.

    Dr. Abubakar noted that ” compare with last year when 15 new cases were discovered and some years back when Kano takes the led in the world, today we can confidently say government is winning the fight. As I speak we have eradicate polio in 40 local government areas left with 4. Currently there is 240 cases of polio and Kano has five share cases that is almost two per cent.

    ” And appropriate measures are being put in place to stop further spread to other part of the state. That is taking a tremendous efforts in the improvement of routine immunization coverage which is one of the strategy to stamp-out polio in the state. So far the story is a successful one and we are not relenting on the campaign on the media”.

    Lamenting some of their critical obstacle militating the success of routine immunization exercise, Dr Abubakar revealed that about 140 children were deliberately invaded from the exercise adding that the development took the intervention of Emir of Kano Alh. Muhammudu Sanusi who led the team on awareness and the need for compliance.

    He stressed that Kano has expended N360 million across the 44 local government councils in the last six months and contributed N140 million into joint basket purse alongside federal government, world health organization WHO and other partners to eradicate the scourge of polio in the state.

    Over 200 Polio survivors thronged major streets in Kano in solidarity and creating awareness on polio immunization and disabuse possible pocket of rejection, on the sideline of 2014 world polio day.

    Kano assists displaced persons

    The Kano State government has donated 17 truck-loads of food items and 6,000 blankets to displaced persons taking refuge in camps in Borno and Yobe states and the Republic of Niger.

    Shortly before dispatching the donation, Governor Rabi’u Kwankwaso said: “We have heard about the challenges of our people who have left their homes, especially from the Northeast. That is why the state government decided to send some food and blankets to them.”

    Kwankwaso said seven trucks loaded with 3,000 bags of maize and 1,200 bags of rice would be taken to Nigerian refugees in Niger Republic, while three trucks of maize and two trucks of rice would go to each of the camps in Borno and Yobe.

    Each of the camps would get 2,000 blankets. He urged representatives of the camps to ensure that the items reach the displaced persons on time.
