  • Kano protection council impounds N114m fake drugs

Kano state Consumer Protection Council has confiscated another batch consignment of fake and illicit drugs, valued at  N114 million from a warehouse in Gezawa Local Government Area of the state.

The confiscation came barely two weeks after the state government destroyed fake drugs, estimated at over N300 million, as part of efforts of its attempt to curb the consumption and circulation of fake drugs in the state.

Speaking to reporters on the seizure in Kano yesterday, the state Commissioner for Commerce, Dr. Farouk Umar Jibrin, who itemized the contents of the fake drugs, said the warehouse was discovered following a tip-off.

In his reaction on the series of successful confiscation of fake goods and drugs in the state without any arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators, the Commissioner, disclosed that investigation has begun, so as to arrest the masterminds.

He noted that the state government will not relent in its efforts to ensure that Kano is free from fake and illicit drugs. Meanwhile, a police orderly attached to the executive chairman of Kabo Local Government Council in Kano state and four others have been arrested for allegedly gang raping a minor.

The police corporal, whose identity is yet to be disclosed by the state Police Command, was said to have conspired with two others in carrying out the act, at an undisclosed location in the local council area.

Report said that the suspect has been apprehended and kept behind bars, alongside his accomplices at the state Criminal Investigation Department pending the outcome of internal investigations.

  • ‘PDP can’t match APC in Kano’

‘PDP can’t match APC in Kano’

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Finance, Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin, represents Kiru/Bebeji Constituency, Kano State. He spoke with Victor Oluwasegun and Dele Anofi on chance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in next year’s elections and issues that will shape the polls .

What is the chance of the APC in next year’s elections?

The party was initially weak before the five governors moved in. They did their best to move the party forward. But, it was when 37 federal lawmakers switched loyalty to the APC that it became obvious that the party has moved up. Historically, when an opposition and an incumbent government are going shoulder-to-shoulder, the opposition always win that election. Several polls have been conducted, indicating that the APC has more support base. Nigerians are no longer behind the PDP. They want change. The reality is that, although we keep encouraging the APC to close ranks and resolve internal crises, there are bigger fundamental crises in the PDP.

It is a blunder to adopt a man who has not said that he would contest. The PDP states are in crises. There is internal wrangling. I can assure you, most of those internal crises cannot be resolved. That is why we want the APC to position itself, move into the PDP territory and take advantage of some of these crises. They are obvious crises. The PDP is deceiving itself. It is a sinking ship and the APC will emerge victorious in the next election.

Chief Tom Ikimi has left your party. Also, some have predicted that the APC will have crisis at its presidential primaries…

I think people should be fair. The party is very strong. It has lost individuals. For instance, if it were Edo State that pulled out of the APC, then, you should be worried. So, if one person from Edo State, who has followers leave, it may be worrisome.

How should the party conduct its presidential primaries?

We need to be honest with ourselves and that has been the challenge confronting the North  over the years.  I like Gen Buhari. I respect him so much. If you go to Kano today, if you see all my bill boards, all my posters, Buhari is there. I won my election without knowing Buhari. I am putting him on my bill board. When I won my election, I didn’t know him.I have never met him. Buhari is akim to integrity. Buhari has a kind of messiahic image. But, the truth of the matter is that we want this integrity of Buhari to be protected. In 2011, Gen. Buhari came out and announced to the country that he will not contest in any future election, specifically presidential election.

To be very honest, he has a lot of junior brothers-Sam Nda Isaiah, Fashola, Rotimi Amaechi, Adams Oshiomole, Tambuwal and, of course, Kwankwanso. So he has a lot of them; even Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti. These are young people who are all his junior brothers and very competent Nigerians that can take up that responsibility. So I think what Buhari supporters should be doing now is to try to get Buhari to support one of these younger brothers.

You are indirectly campaigning for your governor…

Everything I have said is not a campaign for my governor. All the candidates have the national spread. Are you saying Oshiomole, Tambuwal or Fashola do not have the national spread? If you take the governor of Kano State, Kwakwaso, he was in the civil service for 17 years. He is a former member of the House of Representatives,  former Deputy Speaker, Minister of Defence, twice governor of Kano. So, all of them have national spread and acceptability to be supported to achieve their ambition.

Is Tambuwal a member of the APC?

Well, it is a wish. My own personal wish that he should come to the APC. He is not a member of the APC, but we have always wanted him to come to the APC. The PDP is still going round to lure the governors back to the PDP.  My inclusion of Tambuwal is in good faith I am trying to send a clear message that the APC is interested in him. It is not a hidden thing. If the PDP wants to keep him, they should step up their game. But, I can assure you that we will do all we can to take in Tambuwal.

Atiku Abubakar has declared his presidential ambition. What is your view?

Of course, Atiku is a member of the APC and he has the right to contest. Atiku never said he was not going to contest again.

The PDP is campaigning in disguise while the APC is just criticising the style of the ruling party…

I don’t think we will encourage illegality. What the APC always stands for is the rule of law and I want them to play by the rules. We are not going to resort to an illegal method. I think the PDP should listen to the voice of wisdom and stop the illegality.  In all places where they did the TAN rallies, when they leave, the APC comes in and sweeps away everything. So the APC is rooted in the grassroots. We are planning and doing our homework. We are confident. We will play by the electoral laws. By the time we start the campaigns, you will see the fire works of the APC.

The PDP is determined to influence the House to declare vacant the seats of 37 PDP lawmakers, who defected to the APC. Are you all not worried?

We took a decision that we felt was  in the interest of the country and I think the journey has been good. We feel more at home now in the APC . The problems and the challenges in the PDP are still there, although the new chairman has tried to close some gaps. I think the only challenge that we have and we are still trying to manage is the challenge of proper integration. When we wanted to leave the PDP, the leaders of the opposition party followed us from house to house, room to room to talk to us, plead with us to come into their fold. I want to state very clearly that we shouldn’t be taken for granted. For instance, if you look at our APC delegation from Kano or the population of Kano, even if you are going through the delegate system,  ww have the population in Kano; I mean those of us who are followers of Kwankwaso. Let me tell you, the PDP is very smart. The PDP has not stopped going after the governors and members to try to get them back into the PDP and it tells you how smart they are. On daily basis, they are still making gestures to the five governors. So, it would be very dangerous for any body to take us for granted in the APC. Although in the APC, nobody has promised us ticket, we are not threatened. We are warming up for primaries. But, you can see the threats coming out from the PDP as they intimidate their members, pushing them from one corner to another. But, we thank God for where we are. Everybody is pleased and at peace with one another.

I know that the Speaker came under tremendous pressure from above to get our seats declared vacant. The PDP was factionalised. That was why we left the party. There is a court judgment  now from  Kwara.

  • ‘Our close shave with death in Kano school’s black Wednesday’

‘Our close shave with death in Kano school’s black Wednesday’

After enjoying relative peace for some time, the ancient city of Kano was in shock penultimate Wednesday as terrorists invaded the Federal College of Education, killing no fewer than 15 students and leaving no fewer than 34 others in critical conditions. The dreams of the deceased students were cut short, while their parents and guardians were subjected to agony, just as the injured ones wreathe in pains in various hospitals in the ancient city.

Reliving the incident during our correspondent’s visit to one of the hospitals where the injured victims were being treated, a 12-year-old sachet water vendor, Abdul Nasir, said he was hawking water within the premises of the school, when he heard the sound of an explosion.

Nasir, a Primary Five pupil, said: “I was in the school selling pure water when I suddenly heard a bang. It was very loud and then there shootings and people in front of me were being killed. I kept running until I managed to climb a tree and hid myself in its branches.

“I later came down with some injuries. That was why they brought me to the hospital. I am a primary five pupil. I went there to hawk because we are on holiday.”

Narrating his miraculous escape from the attack, a History lecturer at the institution, Chief Ojimba Chinyeremaka,  said he elected to speak on the issue as a way of glorifying God and testifying to His goodness. He said: “God in His infinite mercy did a miraculous thing for me, my family, friends and relations. Let me make it clear that I am not speaking to journalists for political reasons. I say this because I don’t want people to misconstrue my intention.

“I did not have lectures on that day; but I went to school to do other academic works. I felt it was around 1:15 pm when it happened at the New Site where I was. I heard the noise of students. I took time to listen and the noise was unusual and persistent. I came out to inquire what was actually happening and then, I saw people, students, lecturers and other people I could not identify running helter-skelter.

“Deafening sounds of blasts and gunshots rent the air. I joined the race in order to save my life. Gunmen were firing sporadically, and from the storey building where I was, I held a pillar and started rolling down. Other people joined me on the same pillar and there was a crash as heaps of human beings fell on me. It was at this point that I sustained a first degree injury on my right leg. My right leg got broken because I was trapped.

“I begged for help but where could my help come from? Who would help me when everybody was running for dear life? At this point, I saw a gunman stoutly built coming heavily on me. He was at close range.

“Miraculously, God gave me the wisdom to apply self-defence mechanisms. At that point, I fell down and started jacking as if I was dying, pumping out all the saliva in me so that my mouth was foaming. Seeing the heavily built gunman beside me, I bent my neck and he felt I was dead. But even at that, he was not satisfied seeing a supposedly dead man with a heavy wound on his leg. He targeted my left leg and fired two shots at it. Miraculously, the shots missed their target.

“Let me reiterate that the wound I sustained on my right leg was not as a result of gunshots from the deadly terrorists but a result of the stampede as we were all struggling to roll down the pillar from the upstairs.

“I was left alone in the struggle to survive, because every other person left the place. I was there until one of the campus security men came and took me near a classroom. He also felt jittery and left. I crawled into a classroom and hid myself behind the door until some soldiers and policemen came to my rescue.”

As our correspondent left Chief Ojimba’s place, he made straight to the headquarters of Deeper Life Bible Church on Egbe Road where some Christian brethren gathered for the wake of one of their own, a District Pastor of Deeper Life Church in Kano, Dr. Thomas Kayode Ajamu (59), a native of Ogbomosho in Oyo State who was shot dead by the terrorists.

Until his death, Dr. Ajamu was the Head of Department of Christian Religious Studies at FEC, Kano. The hundreds of Christian worshippers who gathered for the wake, described the late Ajamu as a peaceful, God-fearing, humble, easy-going, respectful and down-to-earth man.

Another victim and student of the institution, 35-year-old Mohammed Kawu, said he was in the lecture hall with other classmates when an unknown face made an attempt to enter the hall but the security men on duty insisted that he must be screened. He went berserk and started shooting sporadically.

“I am a student in the Department of Arts and Language. We were receiving lectures in the Philosophy of Science when the intruder pulled out a gun and started shooting in an uncontrolled manner.”

Kawu, an indigene of Hadejia in Jigawa State, who suffered a gunshot in the thigh, recalled that three of his colleagues were shot dead, while another one passed away while receiving medical attention at the Muritala Mohammed Specialist Hospital.

Mubarak Ado, a 23-year-old student of the institution, recalled that the incident occurred at about 1: 45 “as lectures were on and we were all seated in the lecture theatre. Then we heard a loud explosion. The explosion was followed by gunshots. We all began to run for safety. In the process, I sustained a fracture.”

A survivor, Mojeeb Mohammed, who gave an insight into how he escaped from the terrorist attack, said it was a miracle. He noted that there was a twin explosion, which was accompanied by gunshots within the school premises.

He said: “Lectures were going on when the explosion happened. We started scampering into safety. I managed to run for my dear life. I scaled the high fence around the school and it was after I got home that I realised that I left my motorcycle behind.”

Hundreds of motorcycles were abandoned in the school premises. So also were cars. Our checks revealed that among the dead was a head of department, Dr T.K. Adamu, and a senior lecturer whose identity could not be ascertained.

The Kano State Commissioner of Police, Mr Aderenle Shinaba, who also visited the scene on the day of the attack, confirmed that 15 students were killed, while 34 others were seriously injured.

According to him, at about 1:30 pm on that day, some unidentified people climbed the fence of the Federal College of Education, Kano, and jumped into the premises, where they started shooting sporadically to scare the students. Eventually, he said, one of the two suicide bombers gained entry into one of the classrooms and set himself ablaze, killing 15 of the students and injuring 34 of them.

Shinaba said the other suicide bomber went to an open space where he set himself ablaze. Fortunately, most of the students had run away and the suicide bomber only killed himself. He said that two AK 47 rifles were recovered from the scene.

A Federal Government delegation, led by the Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, noted that there was need for a renewed strategy in the effort to curb the untimely death of innocent students who he described as the leaders of tomorrow .

His words: “It is unfortunate that the trend we are experiencing is that institutions of learning are being targeted. It is most unfortunate and I am sure that all of us, federal, state and security agents are all concerned. We have put our hands on deck to ensure maximum safety of lives and property in our institutions.

“We see this trend as another challenge to whoever is concerned to further go back to the drawing board to ensure additional strategies to detect evil doers and protect the lives and property of the young ones in our institutions.

“We were here this morning on the delegation of the Federal Government and President Goodluck Jonathan to extend our sympathy and condolences to the families, staff and management of this institution for losing numerous innocent students to the attack of insurgents.

“We also sympathise with the wounded ones who are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals, and the entire community which has been seriously traumatised by this incident. However, it is our prayers that Allah in His infinite mercies grant the souls of the departed ones peaceful rest and grant their families, friends, associates and entire community of this college the strength and fortitude to bear this great loss.

“We also pray that He gives strength to those that are wounded in the attack, May Allah continue to protect our community, May He protect the lives and property of the entire citizens.“

Mallam Shekarau told reporters that security of lives and property is not a one-sector affair. “It is the business of everybody from the Federal Government to the state and local governments and the communities. Everybody must be concerned.”

Gunmen, suicide bomber kill 65 in Kano school, Kaduna

Unknown gunmen stormed a village in Kaduna, killing about 50 residents.

In Kano, gunmen stormed a school, shooting indiscriminately. Students ran out of their classrooms, screaming.  Amid the pandemonium, a suicide bomber stormed a classroom and set off an explosion.

By the time the smoke cleared a few minutes later, 15 students lay dead; 34 were injured at the Federal College of  Education, Kano.

There were two suicide bombers. One entered the classroom at the new campus  and set himself ablaze, killing the students.

The other  suicide bomber went within the school’s premises and set himself ablaze, but nobody  was killed or  injured as the students had already run for their lives.

Police Commissioner Aderenle Shinaba, who was at the scene of the incident, confirmed that 15 students were killed and 34 were seriously injured.

According to him at about 1:30pm some unidentified people climbed the fence of the Federal College of Education, Kano and jumped into the premises, shooting sporadically to scare the students. Eventually, he said, one of the two  suicide bombers entered one of the classrooms and set himself ablaze, killing 15 of the students and injuring 34 of them.

Shinaba said  the other suicide bomber  went to an open space where he set himself ablaze, but most of the students had run for their lives.

The suicide bomber died. Shinaba said  two AK 47 rifles were recovered from the scene.

The college has been cordoned off by security men and the school has been shut down.

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday commiserated with citizens and residents of Kano State on the loss of lives sustained during the attack by terrorists on the Federal College of Education, Kano.

He sympathized with all those who suffered injuries in the dastardly attack and wished them speedy recovery.

In a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, the President commended the officers and men of the Nigerian Police Force for taking prompt action to confront the attackers and minimize the resultant casualties.

He urges the security agencies to be more alert and proactive in the future in order to stop terrorist attacks in Kano and other parts of the country.

“President Jonathan reassures the people of Kano and all Nigerians that the Federal Government continues to do all within its powers to further enhance the ability of the Police, Armed Forces and other security agencies to prosecute the war against terrorism to a successful conclusion and provide greater security of lives and property across the country.” It stated

Among the 50 person killed by unknowm gunmen are a pastor, four expectant women, children and a soldier, were reportedly killed in Fadan-Karshi villages, Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The Nation also gathered that two other soldiers were seriously injured in the attack. They are receiving treatment at the Gwantu General Hospital, among hundreds of other residents, it was gathered.

There have been series of attacks in Fadan-Karshi since April. No fewer than, which according to sources had 300 people, mostly women and children, have been killed.

A resident, Mike Sanga, told reporters in Kaduna that the attackers invaded Fadan Karshi Daji and nearby communities, burning houses, including a church where several cars were parked.

He said: “In our counting, 12 people were killed in Fadan Karshi, 30 in Fada Karshi Daji, seven others in another community. A pastor and another person were also killed at Ungwar Ganye.”

The council’s Vice Chairman, Pastor Bulus Mandey Anzah, said expectant women, the elderly and children were killed. Hundreds of residents have fled their homes to unknown destinations.

Anzah, who is standing in for the council chairman, Hon Emmanuel Danzaria, said there were temporary camps for some of the displaced peoples. He urged emergency agencies to support them.

“The attacks are getting worse every day. Some of the soldiers who attempted to repel the attack were also injured. Another soldier was killed,” he said.

“Many of the injured are now receiving treatment at the Gwantu General Hospital,” Anzah added.

An official of the state Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) confirmed that over 50 people were killed.

The official, who pleaded not to be named because he was not authorised to speak with the press, said several houses and a church were burnt. He put the Internally Displaced Persons’ figure at over 10,000.

The Centre Initiative for Development and Fundamental Rights Advocacy (CEDRA) has described the attack as “barbaric”.

The group, in a statement issued by Dr. John Danfulani, said the assailants killed many people, injured over 40, burnt down homes and destroyed farmlands.

“Not long ago, the same area witnessed mass killings by the same unknown gunmen. In as much as we know that the country is facing difficult security challenges, we believe the government’s reaction, in terms of providing relief to the affected communities and injured persons, leaves much more to be desired.

Many a time, their interventions are too little too late, despite having agencies like NEMA and SEMA at the federal and state levels. Worse, is the government’s lack of moral courage to boldly accept failure in its number one duty, which is safeguarding lives and properties,” the statement said.

The group also slammed elected and appointed public office holders from Southern Kaduna saying: “They are a gigantic disappointment for their refusal to draw the attention of the government to attacks in Southern Kaduna.”

  • Kano 2015: Why Risqua is the man

Kano 2015: Why Risqua is the man

In this knowledge-driven and youth-oriented world, the greatest treasure of a people is to have a leader who is in sync with modernity to lead it to the utopian world of progress. If a state as historic and important as Kano routinely gets into the news for the bad reason – from drug abuse to breakdown of epidemics, it certainly needs redemption. We need someone to rescue the state to a better clime.

The Kano of today requires a pragmatic leader who is in tune with current events trends and development all over the world. Indeed, the future of Kano depends largely on a quintessential leader blessed with vision, focus, commitment, resourcefulness, exposure, dynamism, hard work, fearlessness, noble family background and above all, credibility and the fear of God. For the state to fit rightly into the modern society, the major catalyst is for it to be steered by one who knows exactly the direction developed all is headed to. Abba Risqua Muhammed perfectly fits this description.

Abba Risqua Muhammed, for outsiders, is the only surviving son of late Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Muhammad. When his father was tragically murdered by some people opposed to Nigeria’s progress in 1976, Abba Risqua was only six years old. He is now 45: fully made man and accomplished in all respects. A graduate of Banking and Finance from the University of Lagos, he also holds a Postgraduate Diploma from the prestigious Cardiff Business School, Wales, United Kingdom. He is also a trustee of the Murtala Muhammed Foundation, an NGO that has done a lot for Kano people and other Nigerians.

In terms of leadership and management acumen, Alhaji Abba Risqua had served as the Special Assistant to President Olusegun Obasanjo on International Relations from 2000 to 2007. He is now managing his booming business empire as the Group Chief Executive of AMG Petroenergy Limited, one of Africa’s foremost energy service providers.

Coming from that golden heritage of a hero that was late General Muhammed, Abba has no hiding place for people looking for credible individuals to take critical leadership roles. It is therefore for this and his personal attributes as an accomplished man that a number of times people of Kano approach him to make himself available to serve the people by standing in for election. This time around, the magnitude and intensity of the demand is huge. As the 2015 general election beckons, the call is for Abba Risqua to come and take up the governorship seat of Kano per chance the state will have a Midas touch of a scion of late General Muhammed.

There is no gainsaying that General Murtala Muhammed is still regarded as one of Nigeria’s true heroes. He was not only one of those fiercely patriotic sons of the land who defiantly fought to keep Nigeria as one united country; he possesses startling qualities that are cherished by all.  He was detribalized, he was authentic, he was enthusiastic about the progress of the country, he was extraordinarily bold, and he was a patriot who truly loved his country. He was a man in a hurry to accomplish great things. He died in that hurry, in the prime of his life. Imagine what he could have done with power had he lived for a little longer?

It is also worthy of note to mention that as a mark of his prudence and uprightness, when he was assassinated in 1976 while serving as Head of State of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, he left only N13,000 in his account and one bungalow in Kano – this was despite serving in various other positions at a time of the celebrated oil boom.

Already, a group, Kano Good Governance Project, is spearheading a movement for Abba Risqua Mohammed to answer the calls of the people to throw his hat in the ring. The coordinator of the socio-political movement, Alhaji Shehu Usman Umar, said their call followed “careful and acute dispassionate study of the low and high profile Kano indigenes” the result of the group’s survey revealed that “none has even the semblance of convincing capacity to recapture the state than Risqua Murtala Muhammad the only surviving son of the remarkable General Murtala Ramat Muhammad.”

According to the group: “As the only surviving son of General Murtala Ramat Muhammad, we find it desirous and needful to approach Alhaji Abba Risqua Murtala Muhammad with sincere proposal to come forward and serve people of Kano State, as we are also confident that he would bring to bear the numerous inborn noble leadership qualities bequeathed to him by his great father. Needless to say, this fame and ideal leadership capacity demonstrated by Abba Risqua’s father, have been unequivocally appreciated by uncountable immortalization gestures to the family by individuals, institutions and organizations in both public and private sectors, from local, state and Federal levels”.

This is an ideal time for Abba Risqua to come forth to complement the efforts of his late father in the development of our nation, with Kano as his primary ground. For those of us engaged in the lobby to have Abba Risqua accede to our demands, our message to him remains that this maybe discomforting, or even disruptive of his other engagements but he has an obligation to serve his people whenever they so desire, which we believe would please the resting soul of his late father, of blessed memory.

It is not surprising, however, that Abba Risqua is not jumping at our demand. It is the humility that is characteristic of the lineage. His father showed similar attitude when he was approached to take over Nigeria’s mantle of leadership as the Head of State, for he was quoted as saying to them, “To hell with you! I have said I don’t want to be anybody’s Head of State”. But when he eventually accepted to head the nation, fatefully for 199 days, the nation went through the most remarkable socio-economic revolution ever in the country. Again, like his father, Abba Risqua is only invited, by the people to lead the Kano State Government, because of the confidence they have in him being the most suitable to give Kano the dynamic, purposeful and efficient leadership it requires. Kano identifies with Murtala’s son because he would do what he would be asked to do and even much more to give his fellow indigenes a sense of belonging, hope and strength in the Kano project.

To rescue Kano from some bad influences and turn around its development pace, Abba Risqua is the man for the job. Having Abba Risqua in Kano Government House come 2015 would, in addition to giving Kano a new lease of life, offer the state the benefit of dynamic leadership driven by youthful exuberance with a touch of deep knowledge of issues.

  • Kano sets up emergency response fund

Kano sets up emergency response fund

Kano State Government on Friday said it had established Emergency Preparedness Response Fund to provide immediate assistance to victims of disasters in the state.

The state’s Commissioner for Special Duties, Gen. Idris Dambazau (rtd.), made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Kano.

Dambazau said that the establishment of the fund was informed by the determination of the state government to ensure that the State Emergency Relief and Rehabilitation Agency (SARERA) responded speedily to disasters.

He said that the fund would be managed by SARERA which would provide immediate assistance to disaster victims without necessarily referring to the state government.

He, however, said that when additional funds were required, the agency could make request for it.

He explained that the response fund had placed SASERA in a position to respond swiftly to emergencies around the state, assuring that the government would continue to support the agency to discharge its duties effectively.

On the recent flood disaster in the state, the commissioner said the agency had visited the affected local government areas and had identified some of the victims.

“Some of the affected persons have been provided with relief materials while efforts are being made to provide for others,’’ he said.

It will be recalled that eight local government areas in the state were affected by the August 1, 2014, flood.

The areas are Kano Municipal, Dala, Gwale, Wudil, Fagge, Nasarawa, Tarauni and Dawakin-Tofa.
