Leaders of Kano non indigenes call for calm

Leaders of Kano Non-Indigenes, under the aegis of Non-Indigenes Community Leaders Association, have called on residents to restrain from instigating insurrection following the serial blasts rocking the state.

In a statement signed by the traditional heads of Yoruba, Igbo and Edo communities, co-signed by the presidents of Yoruba, and Igbo community associations, they urged non-indigenes, particularly youths, to liaise with security agencies to curb the attacks.

“Rising from an emergency meeting last Monday, in Kano, the leaders in the wake of the fresh rampage of terrorist bombing at Sabon Gari Luxury Bus Park, and St Charles Catholic Church where lives were lost, we call on the non–indigene youths not to take the laws into their hands”.

“We advise our people to go about their legitimate business without rancour and bitterness, but to be security-conscious by reporting strange faces, objects or incidents for prompt action instead of getting involved in a misadventure”.

The statement, endorsed by Salihu Olowo (Sarkin Yorubawa), Boniface Ibekwe (Eze Ndi-Igbo), Jimpat Aiyelangbe (the president of non-indigene association), Deacon Fred Akhigbe(Sarkin Edo), said the leaders have opened a channel of communication with the Federal Government to ensure the protection of life and property in the state.

The bomb scare occurred around 9a.m. when traders resumed for the day’s business.

They called the  police Anti-Bomb Squad, whose men scanned the polythene bag and discovered that it contained waste.

Despite an appeal by security operatives urging the traders  not to close shops, many of them shut their business premises.

Also, a car parked  on Warri Road/Ibo Road caused panic among residents who requested that the car contained explosives.

Kano police spokesman Magaji Musa Majiya confirmed the bomb scare, but urged residents to always be security conscious.

Man loses dad, wife, maid in Kano bombing as 30 die in Adamawa

Five persons died yesterday in Kano when suspected insurgents  hurled explosives from the window of a school at a church building as worshippers were leaving after a mass.

Eight others were injured in the attack on St. Charles Catholic Church on Zungeru Road in the ancient city.

The dead, according to sources, include Mr. Ugochukwu Okoli (32), his wife, father and his maid. They were said to have gone for the mass for thanksgikving and were leaving after the service when they were hit by the explosives.

Kano State Commissioner of Police Aderenle Shinaba, said the suspects had gone to a church on Zungeru Road, where they hid themselves at a primary school, close to the church and threw explosives at the unsuspecting  worshippers. He said no fewer than five people died and eight were injured. Three suspects were arrested.

The police said in Abuja that five suspects were arrested in total.

An sms message from police spokesman Frank Mba said two of the suspects were arrested in connection with the failed attack on the Isyaku Rabiu Mosque. Three were held in connection with the attack at St. Charles Church.

The statement said: “All the suspects are currently undergoing interrogation at different police facilities in the state.

“The police have stepped up patrols and surveillance in the city and other major cities across the nation. Police operatives are carrying out overt and covert operations nationwide, while special teams are carrying out sweeping raids in suspected terrorist hideouts.

“Citizens are enjoined to remain vigilant and continue to support the security agencies during the operations.”

The Catholic Bishop of Kano, Bishop John Namanza, said the community protected itself beyond imagination.

Rev. Namanza described the attack as uncalled for, saying those who threw the bomb were unholy.

Although the Bishop praised the security operatives for their response, he lamented that it was belated despite the early information passed to them that the church was a target.

He called on security agents and the state government to strengthen security around the vicinity.

Also yesterday, suspected terrorists attempted a suicide attack at Kofar Nasarawa in Kano. A woman bomber tried to lure some security men, who were stationed by the North West  gate with Sallah food but she blew up herself.

The bomber, who arrived at the scene under the newly built flyover at about 12:30 pm, reportedly  made an attempt to deceive the security operatives that she brought sallah food for them, but the security men suspected foul play.

The security men, it was learnt, took to their heels when they noticed that the woman was advancing towards them. They threatened to gun her down.

However, luck ran out for the bomber, who secretly concealed the explosives under her hijab, when the bomb suddenly exploded and killed her.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) condemned the blast.

The religious body also expressed sadness at the “unfortunate” incident in Zaria, which led to the killing of some people, including the sons of a renowned Islamic scholar El-Zakzaky.

CAN said it was saddened by the implication of the incident as it is capable of throwing the community into more crises.

In a statement signed by CAN National President Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, the clergy urged the people to exercise restrain and live peacefully as the security is up the task of bringing perpetrators to book.

“CAN commiserates with Islamic scholar El-Zakzaky over the loss of his sons, appealing to him to take solace in God. CAN says the demise of the scholar’s sons is most unfortunate and regrettable, particularly at a time when the energy and wise counsel of all in the society is needed to tame insecurity.

“CAN appealed to Nigerians to live peacefully irrespective of religious, ethnic and political difference in the quest for new national re birth.

CAN reiterates its earlier call for Nigerians to give useful information to security agents as they try their best to tackle the insurgency.”

Pastor Oritsejafor described the blast as barbaric and inhuman. While commiserating with families of the deceased, he called on Nigerians to be security conscious.

Eid prayers: Police uncover bomb in vehicle near Mosque

The Kano State Police Command has uncovered a bomb laden vehicle, parked very close to a mosque by suspected terrorists.
The explosives were planted in a white Peugeot 406 car at about 1.am on Sunday which the terrorists would have detonated during the Eid prayers attended by thousands of worshipers.
Speaking to reporter at the Bompai Police Command Headquarters on Sunday in Kano, the State Commissioner of Police, Adenrele Shinaba said:” We are here to explain some of the activities the Kano Police Command have been engaged in and part of the achievements we recorded over the night.”
”We are aware that there is going to be Eid-Fitr prayers at the various praying grounds in Kano. We have been all out before now to ensure that we have a hitch-free sallah celebrations.
”We have mapped out our strategies, which yielded a very positive result. The vehicle you are seeing here is a white Peugeot 406 car, which was primed with high calibre Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) and was parked strategically at a spot, an area where there is going to be a very heavy crowd this morning for the Eid prayers .
”Their motive is to blow up as many Muslim faithful as possible but to God be the glory, we were able to move round and examined the vehicle, screened it properly and discovered that there are explosives in it.
”So my anti-bomb squad swiftly moved to the area where they quickly detonated it by 1: am and moved the vehicle out of the scene to the Police Headquarters.
”We thank God we have been able to save a lot of lives as a result of this discovery, as the vehicle was primed at 1:am for the purpose of blowing it off this morning during the Eid prayers.
”The location of the primed vehicle is close to the Isyaku Rabiu Jumat mosque. The explosive is of high calibre and it was a big one that was primed in the vehicle.
”At the time the anti-bomb squad was trying to detonate it after breaking the side glass to gain entrance into the vehicle, it caused a collateral damage. And that collateral damage would have been on the people of Kano.
”So, we want to us this opportunity to express our very deep appreciation to the good people of Kano for the support they have been and still rendering to law enforcement agencies in the state, and hope that it will be sustained and we can assure you that we will do our very best to give our best to the people of Kano.
”This information came through a responsible Kano indigene,” Shinaba explained.

  • How terrorists invaded Kano Luxury Bus Park

How terrorists invaded Kano Luxury Bus Park

Recent bloodletting occasioned by bomb attacks was reenacted in Kano last week. KOLADE ADEYEMI gives a graphic account of the macabre event.

He was popularly known as Rasta, 18, at the New Road Luxury Park, Sabon Gari, Kano. He was formerly a sachet water vendor who also ventured into all sorts of menial job to enable him get new clothes for himself and his dependants as the Sallah approached—but fate, however, played a trick on him as he met his tragic end on Thursday, 24 July, at about 2:30 pm when sweating life out, he fell victim of terrorists’ strategic attack on the Kano’s multi-million Naira luxury park.

Investigations revealed that Rasta was the one who carried the bomb-infested fridge and water dispenser by an unknown person who posed as a passenger due to travel to Port Harcourt through the Onitsha route. Impeccable sources at the park described Rasta as innocent and hardworking boy who never engaged in any criminal activities.

    From labour to death

According to sources in the park, as Rasta was dying, he shouted in Hausa: “Don Naira hamsin wanda za’a  bani, woni ya bani kaya day a Kashe ni. Kumi, a cikin azumi shine wannan mutumia ya bani kaya da wa sanadiyan mutuwa na, In Allah ya yarda, Allah zai yi mun sakayya. (meaning I am in search of my daily bread just because of N50, a heartless someone gave me some goods that killed me. We are in the Holy month of Ramadan. This man made me to carry the load that led to my death. By the will of Allah, He will vindicate me.)”His colleagues who jostled for the bomb-infested goods with him said, the unknown man who alighted from a taxi and stopped by the gate of the park, urged Rasta to take the load to Port Harcourt line, and wait for him to get  “change” to pay him inside the park. But in the process of waiting for the owner of the load, the low-profile bomb exploded and wreaked havoc.

Rasta who was standing by the door of a luxury bus was among the five dead victims of that blast which ripped off various sections of human parts and left many wounded.

A ticket attendant with Ifeanyichukwu Industry and Commercial Services Limited, a surviving victim of the blast, popularly known as Aguleri gave a detailed account of what happened before the incident. In his words: “We were sitting in front of our motor, Ifeanyichukwu, so one Hausa boy came with a truck; and there was fridge inside the truck; and we asked him who is the owner of the load and he said the owner was coming; that the owner said he should wait for him while he looked out for change to pay him for carrying the load. We were there writing ticket for people, and what we heard the next minute was a big bang; and that is how I see myself in this situation.”

The General-Secretary of Association of Luxury Bus Owners of Nigeria, Kano branch, Mr. Godson Nwokoma, said that, “On Thursday, 24 July, a tragic event  happened here in the park; and we are trying our best being a peace-loving group to be pursuing the cause of peace. We still do not want a situation whereby people will be having fears and we will want to believe in the words of the state Governor, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso who has promised that he is going to do everything within his reach to restore peace—and we are also toeing in that same line to see that normalcy returns here. As you can see, activities in the park has picked up. We have started our normal business and also passengers have started coming and the normal activities are already booming. We still believe that our brothers who are performing this evil act will have a rethink in their minds and consider that what is being wasted are human lives and human blood which cannot be purchased in the market. Whatever their problems are, we under this umbrella of the Association of Luxury Bus Owners of Nigeria, Kano branch, are still making appeal that their grievances can be handled in a round-table discussion with the appropriate quarters. So, we are still making appeal to them that whatever their problems are, let them channel it through the proper authorities concerned than wasting innocent lives and properties, which in the long-run will affect hapless Nigerians, affect the unity of the nation, affect the brotherhood of the nation; and so, we use this medium to call on our customers to bear with us. This is not our doing; but as you can see, from the entrance of the gate, we do everything within our reach to see that security is being maintained, but you also bear in mind that we are only human beings. We can only do things that are within our reach.”

Another interest group within the Park known as the Unity Progressive Union (UPU) called on Kano Police Command to position a 24-hour anti-bomb squad at the entrance of the Luxury Park to frisk all vehicles, luggage and human beings gaining entrance into it.

The chairperson of the group, Mrs. Regina Emmanuel who is the owner of Destiny Restaurant, insisted that the only way to solve terror-attack in the park is to create an Anti-bomb Squad unit.

According to her account, “On that day, I was serving customers food. Everybody was selling and business activities were booming. Buses coming from the South arrived late largely because of the curfew imposed on Kaduna. At about 1:30 pm the first bus arrived and everybody in the park jubilated; 30 minutes later, the second bus arrived and the jubilation was high; then at about 2:30 pm the third bus arrived and everybody was in happy mood—all these three buses were in Port Harcourt line.

“The third bus that arrived at that time was Ifeanyichukwu Motors. As God could have it, the driver put off the engine; if not, the havoc would have been more devastating.  So, as I was telling you, all of a sudden, with a plate of fufu on my hand for a customer, I heard a bang…and as I ran for dear life, I saw people lying on the ground in the pool of their own blood. I counted about three dead bodies, with a woman’s head severed.”

Also speaking, the secretary UPU, Mrs. Joyce S., owner of Madam Edo Restaurant cried out to both state and federal government to consider paying compensation to members of the union who have lost their valuables worth millions of Naira and loved colleagues in the incessant bomb-blasts that have been rocking the multi-million Naira Luxury Park. “Most of us are as old as this park. We started doing business in this park established during the first tenure of Governor Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso. We need serious security. Police said they are doing their best. Let them provide anti-bomb squad team to work together with our Task Force and the soldiers so that security of lives and properties of Nigerians can be secured. Unknown to many this park that you see remains mini-Nigeria that generate millions of Naira for the state government as Internally Generated Revenue.”

The Nation investigation showed that no fewer than five people died in that blast and about 12 wounded. However, Police authorities confirmed that only one woman died in the blast while eight others sustained various degrees of injuries. Giving account of the incident to reporters at the scene of the incident, Kano Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adenrele Shinaba said:  “On arrival, we discovered this luxury bus and damages done to these personal properties, properties like goods, all we know is that this luxury bus is getting ready to travel to Port Harcourt.

“In the process of loading the vehicle, one of the trucks that were being pushed was carrying a fridge to be loaded inside the vehicle, and it was the fridge that went off. It is presumed that there is a prime explosive concealed inside the refrigerator and that is what we are working on, now.”

When our reporter visited the Nigerian Air Force Hospital where the injured victims were admitted, security men refused him entrance, but it was gathered that out of the survivors brought to the hospital, four have been treated and discharged.

  • Kaduna death toll hits 110 as bomber strikes in Kano

Kaduna death toll hits 110 as bomber strikes in Kano

Five die as bomb hidden in fridge goes off at park

A bomb went off in Kano yesterday, 24 hours after the Kaduna twin explosions in which former Head of State Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and a cleric, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi were targets.

Five persons died in the Kano explosion, which took place at a popular motor park in Sabon Gari. Twelve persons were injured. The police said only one person died.

The death toll in the Kaduna explosions,  which have been condemned by the United Nations (UN), former military President Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and others, has risen to 110.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) called for a comprehensive investigation into the explosions, which it described as “abhorrent and criminal”.

The toll has risen to 110, with more injured victims being rushed to hospital for treatment, a humanitarian aid official said yesterday.

Abubakar Zakari Adamu, a spokesperson for the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), told reporters that 13 of the severely injured victims died in the hospitals.

A Xinhua reporter learnt that hundreds of people travelling through the northcentral state have been stranded following the 24-hour curfew imposed on Kaduna city.

Vehicles from neighbouring Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi and Jigawa states were blocked from entering the city at the toll gate plaza on Zaria road, forcing hundreds of people to loiter around the area in heavy rain.

Vehicles from the South were also stranded at the toll gate on Abuja-Kaduna Road.

Except for children and a few vehicles and security personnel, roads in the city were completely empty until later in the afternoon after the curfew was lifted.

Kaduna State Commissioner for Information Mr. Ben Bako, said the curfew was lifted after it was reviewed at a State Security Council meeting.

Bako said: “Following the bomb blast that killed scores of persons on Wednesday leading to the imposition of the 24 hours curfew, an emergency Security Council meeting was summoned today (yesterday) and the situation was reviewed, subsequently, the curfew has been lifted.

“Citizens are advised to go about their legitimate businesses, remain calm, vigilant and report any suspicious movement of persons or vehicles to relevant security agents.”

When reporters sought clarification on the curfew, death toll  and other matters, Bako said: “No questions; no questions.’’

Contrary to eye witness account that no fewer than 82 people died in the explosion, he said: “39 persons were killed in the twin bomb blast all together; 34 persons died instantly while two died in the evening of the blast and another three died this morning (yesterday morning) with 37 persons injured and receiving treatment at various hospitals.”

It was gathered that 37 injured victims were receiving treatment at 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital.

Governor Mukhtar Ramalan Yero and security chiefs visited the scenes of the explosions and the hospitals where the survivors were receiving treatment.

Yero cautioned residents to avoid crowded areas, saying terrorists now target such places.

He said the state government would foot the bills of the injured.

Speaking to reporters at the 44 Army Reference Hospital, Yero said: “First of all, I will like to thank God Almighty for what he has done for us in Kaduna. In the last two years, we have not had this kind of problem, but everything has its own time. This thing happened yesterday; it is a very sad incident. And whoever is behind this knows that he has no fear of God. This is very unfortunate; it is not supposed to be. So, we are totally condemning this act and we are also calling on people to condemn it and make sure people watch out for what is around them.

“Kaduna people have been very vigilant, but, unfortunately, because of the crowded town we had yesterday, this thing happened. But we know that, by the grace of God, this thing will never happen again. We will continue to do our best and we will continue to pray to God Almighty Allah for what he has done for us.

“We also visited the scenes of the blast. The one that is very major is that of Kawo, because in that one, they used a vehicle. The other is at Alkali Road; it was a suicide bomber and it was an individual.

“We also visited General Buhari, I spoke with him yesterday.  We at the Security Council meeting decided in the middle of the meeting to go and see him. So, we went to greet him at home. I also called Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi and, as at that time, he was on his way to Saudi Arabia.

“We will continue to do our best to ensure the safety of everyone, but we need the support of the general public. It is no longer business-as-usual.

“If you look at this issue critically, you will discover that people just want to create problem and ensure there is crisis in Kaduna State and Nigeria generally. So, people must rise up and understand that it is no longer the issue of religion. It is no longer issue of politics. This is an issue of lives and property of people.

The NLC has called for a probe of the attempt on the lives of Gen. Buhari and Sheikh Bauchi.

Acting General Secretary Chris Uyot said in an email that a comprehensive investigation into the attacks was necessary to unravel those behind with a view to preventing similar attacks.

Uyot described the attacks, which resulted in the death of 82 Nigerians, as “criminal and abhorrent”.

The statement said: “Boko Haram, it seems, has become a convenient brand under which all manner of atrocities are committed.”

Explosion at Kano motor park kills five, injures 12

A bomb hidden in a refrigerator exploded yesterday at the New Road Luxury Park in Sabon Gari, Kano, killing five people and injuring 12 others.

The police said only one person died in the park where a bomb killed no fewer than 15 last year – also in July. Boko Haram, the insurgent sect, said it was responsible for that incident.

Yesterday’s blast happened at about 2:30pm when the luxury bus owned by Ifeanyichukwu Industry and Commercial Services Limited, arrived the motor park from Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

The front of the bus was shattered. Two other buses were damaged by the explosion.

A source at the motor park recounted the explosion. He said: “A luxury bus had just arrived from Port Harcourt. As the bus parked, some passengers were disembarking. We heard a loud bang which devastated the area.

“People started running helter-skelter. We saw five bodies on the ground, and a woman’s head flew off in a different direction. I do not know whether she was a passenger or not.”

A bus conductor, Umar Isah, said he saw a truck-pusher with a fridge inside the truck, pushing it towards the vehicle, “and in a twinkle of an eye, we heard a deafening sound that rocked the whole motor park. The truck-pusher was severely injured in the process.”

Kano State Commissioner of Police Adenrele Shinaba said:  “On arrival, we discovered this luxury bus and damage done to these personal property. All we know is that this luxury bus is getting ready to travel to Port Harcourt.

“In the process of loading the vehicle, one of the trucks that were being pushed was carrying a fridge to be loaded inside the vehicle, and it was from the fridge that the bomb went off. It is presumed that there is  a prime explosive concealed inside the  refrigerator and that is what we are working on for now.

“So far, I want to confirm that one woman is dead; eight others are injured and have been taken to hospitals for treatment. The injuries are not life threatening, and we shall also, in the shortest time, move to the hospital to see  the progress they are making.”

Chief Chris Azuka, the President of Ohaneze Ndi Igbo in Kano,  condemned the blast, saying it had become a frequent occurrence.

Chief Jerry Agunbiade, Deputy President, Yoruba Community, Kano, said: “I don’t expect a thing like this, because of the security awareness in the park. Already, you have security around, they should have been able to do something and detect the bomb. The government should find  what they can do to put more security.”

Chief Tony Lele Peters, President-General of the South-South Community, said: “It is astonishing that this thing is happening again at the same park, despite the security put in place.

    CAN condemns Kano, Kaduna explosions

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed sadness over Wednesday’s twin bomb explosions in Kaduna and yesterday’s motor park bombing in Kano.

Over 80 people died in the Kaduna blasts and five confirmed dead in the Kano bomb. Scores of people were injured and property worth several millions were destroyed in the incidents.

The umbrella Christian body said it is regretful that such an incident is happening in our communities at this time especially when all faithful are in search for genuine reconciliation with their God and seek peaceful coexistence with their neighbours.

It prayed God for saving the lives of two prominent Nigerians, former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and an Islamic cleric, Dahiru Bauchi, in the bomb attacks.
