What we’re using BSS for, by Kanu

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has challenged President Muhammadu Buhari to offer a better argument in handling Biafra and other national questions facing the country.

Kanu spoke at his country home at Afaraukwu Ibeku in Umuahia, Abia State capital, while reacting to the President’s order to security agencies to place IPOB in the same category with Boko Haram and give them the same treatment for threatening national security.

The IPOB leader faulted the move, saying Mr. President’s recourse to “brute force” to solve national challenges would never work.

He said the people should not be railroaded into succumbing to intimidation.

Kanu reminded the President that there were better ways to handle the growth and development of the country, instead of “resorting to threat or intimidation” of those who believe in his cause.

He said: “In this debate for freedom, everybody has to be heard. President Buhari should defeat me with the superiority of his argument, not AK-47 (rifle). Those who quickly have a recourse to violence, hate and intimidation are those who have lost the force of argument.”

The IPOB leader argued that it was wrong for the President to compare his organisation, which he called a peaceful mass movement, to Boko Haram, which he said is an internationally recognised terrorist group.

He said the President’s decision to unleash the nation’s security apparatus on IPOB demonstrated his alleged dictatorial tendencies and determination to enforce national unity in his own terms and those of his people.

  • Southeast senators meet Kanu on agitation tension

The Southeast Senate Caucus has met the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, and members of the group on rising tension in the country, especially in the region.

The caucus, through its Chairman, Enyinnaya Abaribe, held a meeting with Kanu in his Ohuru, Obingwa country home in Abia State.

Addressing reporters with Kanu after the meeting, Abaribe urged IPOB and other agitators across the country to allow their actions show respect to Nigeria’s laws and avoid any form of violence and other actions that can abridge other people’s rights.

Abaribe said: “It is a majority consensus that all of us desire unity and a peaceful Nigeria where equity and fairness is entrenched and where no group or region would be treated as second-class citizens.

“Notwithstanding, the Southeast Senate Caucus demands total restructuring of the country and devolution of powers in such a manner that would assuage the feelings of despondency, injustice and near rejection within the Nigeria state. This, to us, is the way to go. We think this is the crux of the rising agitation in the land.

“I thank Kanu for assuring to conduct his members in a peaceful manner and within the ambit of the law. This engagement is a continuous process that will lead us to find a lasting solution to whatever grievances that necessitated the agitations in Nigeria.

“The caucus will, accordingly, meet as soon as we resume from the recess to continue the engagement for the good of our people and our dear country. All of us desire equality, equity, fairness in a peaceful and united Nigeria.”

Kanu said: “We are not afraid in our quest but what I promise my elder brother is that we shall never fail them by resorting to violence. We can’t and it has never been our approach.”

  • Govt urges court to return Kanu to prison

Govt urges court to return Kanu to prison

The Federal Government has urged a Federal High Court in Abuja to revoke the bail it granted Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)leader Nnamdi Kanu and send him back to prison.

The government argued that Kanu has not only breached the conditions attached to the bail granted him on April 25 on health grounds, he has allegedly conducted himself in manners that threaten public peace.

It cited Kanu’s alleged threat that elections would not hold in South East states until the Federal Government conducted referendum on whether or not Biafra should secede and instances where the IPOB leader addressed crowds exceeding 10 and threatened civil disobedience, as against the court’s directive that he must not be seen in a crowd of over 10 people.

The government, in a counter-motion, dated August 1, 2017 filed by Magaji Labaran of the Federal Ministry of Justice, urged the court to dismiss an application by Kanu, seeking a review of the bail conditions.

It noted that not only had Kanu not met the bail conditions and was enjoying the bail, it was an affront to the court’s authority for the IPOB leader to approach the court for the review of the conditions, having allegedly breached them.

“The offence for which he (Kanu) is standing trial is not ordinarily bailable; the court, not withstanding, granted bail to the 1st defendant/applicant (Kanu) on health grounds on 25th April 2017.

“Among other conditions for the bail of the 1st defendant is that he should not be seen in a crowd exceeding 10 people; that he should not grant any interviews, hold or attend any rallies; that he should file, in court, medical updates of his health status every month. The bail conditions were perfected by the 1st defendant/applicant, which he is currently enjoying.

“Rather than observing all the conditions listed above, the 1st defendant, in fragrant disobedience to the court order, flouted all conditions given by the court.

“The 1st defendant equally incited his members to disrupt, disallow and boycott elections in South East states, starting with Anambra State gubernatorial election scheduled for November 18 if the Federal Government failed to hold referendum for the realisation of the state of Biafra.

“The 1st defendant has already declared the bail conditions given by the court unconstitutional before approaching this court with the application for variation. Rather than showing remorse for his actions, the 1st defendant approached this court with an application for a review of the same conditions for the bail which he grossly flouted.

“Considering the above, that the 1st applicant has violated the conditions on which the terms of his bail were premised, we urge this court to commit the defendant to prison by invoking the provision of Section 173(2)(B) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.

“We categorically state that justice would have been denied the state by this court, if the state is not protected from the offences being perpetrated by the 1st defendant/applicant, who is currently on bail,” the government said.

Kanu and four other suspected IPOB members – Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu, David Nwawuisi and Bright Chimezie – are being tried before the Federal High Court, Abuja on offences relating to conspiracy and treasonable felony.

Biafra: Kanu deceiving Ndigbo, says Okorocha

•‘Igbo ‘ll lose N3 trillion to another war
    •Governors: Anambra election will hold

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha yesterday warned the Igbo nnot to fall for the deception of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu over the actualization of Biafra.

He warned that the Igbo would lose not less than N3 trillion I assets and cash should there e another war.

Okorocha, who spoke at the presentation of staff of office and Certificate of recognition to traditional rulers, lamented that traditional rulers had kept mute while the cloud gathered over activities of Biafra agitators.

He said: “On IPOB, the cloud is gathering, nobody is talking, even our traditional rulers, pastors and leaders. This is bad for our people. If you will remember vividly that few years ago, during the civil War, it was a similar story. That was how it all started. At that time, we believed that the Ohafia warriors would be able to fight and disseminate the North”.

Okorocha added: “Now we are being deceived that IPOB will drive away Nigeria and give us Biafra. Even our Pastors, men of God and some leaders in the rural areas, nobody is speaking out against this action and the song of war is coming gradually like a desert encroachment. We fought the war and it was believed that the Igbos would learn from it but they still went ahead and developing the resources of other regions.

“There are five million Igbo living outside the shores of Igbo region. Any form of war will cause the Igbos over three trillion naira loss in properties and assets. No sane person will spread the message of division and war because it does not benefit the Igbo in any way. I urge you traditional rulers to speak against it and educate your people on the true state of things. Igbo need to build bridge of unity across the nation”.

Enugu, Southeast governors yesterday in Enugu, resolved to support holding election in Anambra State in November.

It was a reaction to the declaration by IPOB that there would be no election in Anambra.

At the meeting were South East Governors Forum chairman and Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi; host Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi; Governor Rochas Okorocha Imo State;Governor Okezie Ikpeazu  of Abia State  and Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State who was represented by his deputy Nkem Okeke.

The governors appealed to stakeholders for  a peaceful governorship election in Anambra State, assuring that they were solidly in support of the forthcoming poll.

Umahi, who read the communique also said the Apex-Igbo Social Cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo briefed them on the latest on the quit notice given the Igbo by a coalition of Northern youths.

They assured that they were in torch with the Igbo residing in different parts of  the North over the quit notice with the firm assurance that they were making efforts to ensure that  no Igbo lives are in danger or threatened.

The governors hinted that they received a presentation from Geometric Power Company and commended Professor Barth Nnaji for the wonderful presentation.

  • MASSOB to Fed Govt: we’ll shake Nigeria if Kanu is arrested

MASSOB to Fed Govt: we’ll shake Nigeria if Kanu is arrested

The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) yesterday warned the Federal Government that re-arresting pro-Biafran Leader, Nnamdi Kanu, will lead to an unprecedented crisis in the nation’s history.

Kanu, leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was arrested and detained by the Federal Government for alleged treason in 2015.

He was granted bail earlier this year with some conditions, including the restriction not to be seen in a crowd of more than 10 persons.

The government also said he must not address a meia briefing or grant interviews.

But Kanu has serially flouted the conditions.

He also backed a one-day sit-at-home protest by = Southeast and Southsouth residents to press home their demand for secession of Biafra to be carved out from the area two regions.

The sit-at-home protest was largely successful, especially in the five Igbo-dominated states in the Southeast.

But it has heightened the already charged political tension across the country.

Various groups, including the Arewa Youth Assembly, have urged security agencies to arrest Kanu for inciting statements calculated to overheat the polity.

In a statement by its factional leader, Uchenna Madu, MASSOB warned that the country may not recover from the crisis the action will generate, if Kanu is re-arrested.

The statement said: “MASSOB warns that any attempt or plan to re-arrest Kanu will be thoroughly and massively resisted. We can never tolerate it. It is an insult and embarrassment to our inalienable rights. We shall collapse Nigeria, if he is arrested.

“Now that we know that our consistency and exposure of the hidden truths is dangerously frustrating, disorganising and killing their age-long agendas against the people of Biafra, we shall never relent or surrender.”

  • Youths call for Kanu’s arrest

The Yoruba Youth Congress (YYC) and the Coalition of Southwest Youths have called for the arrest of the leader of Independent People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Addressing reporters in Akure, the Ondo State capital, the National President of YYC, Prince Dapo Adepoju, said Kanu was taking Nigerians for granted. He noted that the IPOB leader was provoking the youths and not respecting the bail conditions given to him.

He warned Kanu of the dire consequence of causing violence, noting that nobody had monopoly of it.

Adepoju said efforts were being made to douse temper, stressing that the over 25 million Yoruba youths were not happy with Kanu’s war-like attitude.

According to him, Kanu’s unbecoming attitude would continue to charge the polity.

He said: “We decided to keep mute all along as well we felt Kanu and his men his men will allow for dialogue.

  • Kanu the coward

    Kanu the coward

An an interview with Kadaria Ahmed, who anchors Channels Television’s The Core, Nnamdi Kanu said two curious things. He said he was for confederation and he no longer wants to fight with arms. First, is he serious? This man peddled incendiary rhetoric asking for guns. Is he not a coward? Confederation means the Southeast is still part of Nigeria. Maybe he has recanted or he does not know political science 101. Kanu showed himself an ethnic entrepreneur, rallying gullible kinsmen to stock his Biafra purse with hard-earned money. He also boasted that he could win a referendum in Rivers State because he rallied a big crowd in Port Harcourt. He should not mistake the Igbos in PH with Ikwerres, Ogonis, Ijaws, Andonis, etc in Rivers. He could rally a big crowd in Ladipo in Lagos as well. This is one delusional conman.

  • IPOB: I didn’t send emissary to Kanu, says Obong of Calabar

IPOB: I didn’t send emissary to Kanu, says Obong of Calabar

The Obong of Calabar, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, yesterday denied sending any emissary to leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu.

The Obong was reacting to a video making the rounds in the social media where a man claimed to represent him in a meeting with the IPOB leader.

A statement by chairman of the Etuboms’ Traditional Council of the Palace of the Obong of Calabar, HRH Etubom Bassey Okor Bassey Duke, said the man claiming to represent the monarch was an “imposter with dubious intentions.”

It reads: “The attention of the Obong of Calabar-in-Council has been drawn to a video currently making the rounds on social media in which a person is seen claiming to have been sent by the Obong of Calabar to ask Nnamdi Kanu of IPOB to visit him.

“The content of this video is therefore a ridiculous insult and the Obong of Calabar-in-Council dissociates itself completely from everything to do with the person and fake message carried in the video.

“From the poor illegitimate dressing, intonation, accent and comportment, it is clear that the person is a petty impersonator with dubious intentions.

“While freedom of speech is guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution it does not extend to endorsing the propagation of falsehood of making fraudulent claims.

“The Obong of Calabar-in-Council, therefore calls on the security agencies to live up to expectation and immediately arrest and prosecute the impersonator whose face can clearly be seen in the video.”

A 2:42 minute video on YouTube titled: BIAFRA: I’m very, very happy we are now a nation, shows Kanu addressing some supporters in a room when a man in dark glasses dressed in traditional attire said he brought greetings from Obong, who supports the Biafra cause and would like to see the IPOB leader.

According to the man, the Obong and the Calabar people wanted to see the IPOB leader.

“Tell him he was one of the people I was praying for while in prison and one of the people I would go to.

“Tell the Obong of Calabar, I will go to see him that I would be honoured to see him in person.

“I will come to see him in his Palace. Tell the Obong that. Thank you very much for coming,” Kanu replied in the video.

  • Anambra guber: Igbo leaders move to check Kanu, IPOB

Anambra guber: Igbo leaders move to check Kanu, IPOB

The South East political class may have drawn the battle line with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, over his recent threat to disrupt the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra State.

The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) in the zone is championing a move to cut Kanu’s influence.

The plan, The Nation gathered, is to use political and legal means to stop Kanu and his group from preventing the conduct of the governorship election.

Sources familiar with the development said at least three meetings have been held by political activists and parties in the zone on ensuring that nothing stops the election from taking place.

Consequently, some political players in the zone may soon approach the court to seek an injunction restraining Kanu, IPOB or any other group or person, from acting in any manner that may jeopardize the peaceful conduct of the November 18 election in Anambra State.

“As a group and even as individuals, we view the threat as a sad development,” one of the sources said.

“It is unfortunate that Kanu decided to taint his agitation in such a ridiculous manner. Politicians and even the voters in the Southeast are not comfortable with such blatant display of undue arrogance. We strongly believe that the Igbo want restructuring and not secession.

“We have met and we are still meeting. The threat is not just about Anambra, it is about the entire Southeast zone. We cannot fold our arms or leave such a thing to chance.

“Political and legal means are being worked out to forestall any confusion before, during and after the governorship election in Anambra. We may be seeking legal injection against those threatening the election.”

He added that as part of the political means of tackling Kanu’s threat, mass sensitisation and mobilisation of the people of Ananbra State have been suggested.

“We have thought about reaching out to the people of Anambra and telling them about the danger of not participating in the governorship election. This may start anytime,” he added.

This is coming on the heels of the countermand issued earlier in the week by the President of the Igbo apex socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze, Chief John Nwodo, to Kanu’s threat of election boycott in Anambra State.

Addressing the State House of Assembly, Nwodo had said: “Whereas Ohanaeze understands the marginalisation and unfair treatment of Igbo which have given rise to self-determination movements in Igboland, leaders of these movements must not arrogate to themselves the supreme leadership of Igbo land.

“Statement of the kind credited to Nnamdi Kanu are provocative, misleading and unproductive.  Why should Anambra people be denied the opportunity to choose their own leader? Why should any of us who are not from Anambra , no matter how highly placed, descend to the arena and dictate for Anambra people when to vote , Whether to vote or who to vote for?

“Anambra, nay Igbo, are still part and parcel of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Yes, we are not happy with our treatment in Nigeria.  Yes, some of us want Biafra. Yes some of us prefer a restructured Federal Republic of Nigeria. But the fact remains that we are still part and parcel of the present Federal Republic of Nigeria, bound by its laws, no matter how repressive or unjust.  Our approach to reforms of our laws even if it leads to self-determination or restructuring must be lawful.

“We must convince other Nigerians of our points of views, we must strive to make others share our concoctions.  Our language must be civil, respectful and leads to consensus building. We must resist any attempt to turn division amongst us, as to which way we must go, becoming a source of altercation between us.”

Besides, a former National Chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh, said the people of Anambra in particular and Igboland in general, will not be part of the “no election” threat of the IPOB leader.

The politician urged Nigerians to disregard the threat, saying it was made in bad faith.

He added that neither Kanu nor IPOB can prevent Igbo people anywhere from exercising their rights to vote during elections.

“Kanu cannot prevent people from voting or seeking to be voted for. It is their civic rights. To say election will not hold is a joke. That election will come and go. For us in APGA, we take that election very seriously,” he said.

“APGA as a political party is keen about the said election. We are approaching it with every seriousness. Nobody can tell me not to vote. He leads IPOB, not the whole of Igboland. And IPOB is just one association in the southeast. So he represents IPOB and not the entire Igbo people,” he said

Earlier, Umeh’s party, APGA, had decried Kanu’s call on Anambra people to shun forthcoming gubernatorial poll in the state. The party, like Umeh, in a letter to Kanu, signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Ifeatu Obiokoye, said the call was irresponsible and devoid of intellectual focus.

“Nnamdi Kanu’s call for a boycott of elections in the South-East, beginning with the governorship polls scheduled for Nov.18, 2017 in Anambra is irresponsible, irredentist and totally devoid of any focus. You must appreciate that for different logical reasons and perception, the Biafra concept has attracted favourable comments among our people, ostensibly borne out of the marginalisation of Ndigbo in the Nigerian state,” the party said.

The party reminded Kanu that the right to vote and be voted for was a universally declared right under the United Nations Charter of People’s and Citizenship Right, and in the 1999 Constitution (as amended). It advised the IPOB leader to drop his “emperor” perception of himself “and humble yourself to the true leadership of Ndigbo for a proper and better articulation of the Biafra struggle”.

The national chairman of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Chief Chekwas Okorie, also flayed Kanu and IPOB on the no-election threat in Anambra. The Abia State born politician added that the threat will soon fizzle out as nobody in the zone is willing to be part of any action that will disturb the governorship election in Anambra.

“As far as I am concerned, it is a position that will fizzle out in due course because it is not rooted in any logic. I can excuse their naivety but it is left for elders like us to call them to order in a very subtle manner, with superior logic without being antagonistic, confrontational and unduly offensive.

“The fact is that many of them do not know the danger of election boycott.  It is a political suicide. In the Second Republic, a political coalition, called United Progressives Grand Alliance (UPGA), led by Dr. Michael Okpara, made up NCNC, led by Okpara, Action Group (AG), then led by Dr. Majekodunmi, as Chief Obafemi Awolowo was as at that time a political prisoner and United Middle Belt Congress (UMBC), led by Joseph Tarka, and Borno Youth Forum, led by Alhaji Waziri Ibrahim.

“You will recall that the alliance took the decision to boycott the 1965 election. That decision was a disaster because it gave the Northern Peoples Congress (NPC) and Nigerian National Alliance (NNA) the advantage they wouldn’t have had. That was why Chief Akintola, who belonged to NNA, had advantage in the West then. Of course, everyone saw the backlash of that unwise decision to boycott the election.

“Bearing this in mind, I can assure you that the election in Anambra will be successful. Even the common Anambra people have expressed their anger at the insensitivity of the Kanu/IPOB threat against Anambra election. In fact, that threat is a major setback for IPOB,” the UPP leader said.

Similarly, Sam Oraegbunam, Chairman of the Anambra State chapter of Hope Democratic Party (HDP), insisted that the people of the state must be allowed to peacefully vote during the scheduled governorship election to forestall a situation where the state would be left without a governor.

“If Anambra does not hold election in Nigeria in November, it means that there will be a vacuum. And what happens to the state in terms of administration? Kanu is from a state and there is an elected governor. So he should allow us have our election because we are still a component of Nigeria,” Oraegbunam said.

  • Kanu not regarded as Southeast leader, says Presidency

Kanu not regarded as Southeast leader, says Presidency

The Presidency yesterday explained why the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, was not part of the ongoing consultations with leaders of the Southeast.

The main reason for his absence is that he was not considered as a leader of thought in the Southeast region.

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo last week started series of conversation meetings with leaders of thought, politicians, traditional rulers and the clergy over rising ethnic tensions in parts of the country.

The Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Senator BabafemiOjudu, said the IPOB leader was not invited because the Presidency does not regard him as a leader of thought in the Southeast.

According to him, a window of possibility would be opened for Kanu to meet with the Federal Government for discussion should the need arise in the future.

He said: “Well, the thing is that we were looking for leaders of the people, leaders of thought and we do not see him as a leader of thought in the East.

“May be opportunity will come at one time or the other for him to be engaged.

“But so far, what we have done is to look at people who have influence in the communities, whether it is religious, whether it is traditional, whether it is political, social or governance. These are the people we brought in for discussion.” he added

He added that the South leaders, including Ohanaez Ndigbo, who came to see Osinbajo have neither asked for a referendum on Biafra or secession, Ojudu said they have only complained about marginalisation in appointments and harassment by police at road blocks.

The special adviser assured that their concerns were issues that could easily be addressed.

He said: “Nobody has tabled that in all the discussions we have had. Nobody, I can tell you. Ohanaeze came with a prepared document. They never talked about referendum. They never. They never even talked about secession.

“They made complaints about police harassment at road blocks. They made complaints about losing some key positions, not being appointed into security positions and all those kinds of things.

“And these are things that can easily be addressed. Nobody canvassed secession at those meetings, nobody canvassed referendum.”

Ojudunoted that the Southeast leaders that have met with the Acting President were in support of one united, peaceful Nigeria.

He said the Federal Government would tackle the perceived injustice in parts of the country through equitable distribution of resources and employment creation.

He added: “So, for us, and that was the conclusion that everybody came to in the consultations we have had that we should all agree that we can live together peacefully.

“We should address injustice where we find it and the government should be equitable in the distribution of resources across the country and then, find solution to youth unemployment and the frustration that is confronting most of the young people across this country.”
