Ogun PDP political future still bright – Kashamu

Hon. AbdulRasheed Kashamu, son of late Senator Buruji Kashamu, has said that despite the challenges facing the Ogun State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), its political future remains very bright in the state.

The young Kashamu who is the Minority Chief Whip in the Ogun State House of Assembly and represents Ijebu North 1 State Constituency, said further that “the health of the Ogun PDP is fine” and the “party affairs is also in order,” stressing that he would continue to be with his people, and use quality legislation and representation to serve them.

The 27-year-old state Iawmaker spoke in his late father’s country home in Ijebu – Igbo while fielding questions from reporters shortly after he distributed food items – noodles, rice, others, and cash, to over 4,000 children, physically challenged persons, and the aged in Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State to further celebrate this year’s Eid – El – Fitr for them.

He said caring for the needy and downtrodden members of the society is a tradition and legacy bequeathed to the family by his late father, Senator Buruji Kashamu, who passed on in 2020, stressing that those he left behind had vowed to sustain the practice.

He urged wealthy Nigerians to remember the needy and less privileged in their communities and strive to support them, especially during this economically trying period.

He said: “We have been doing it every year. It is a tradition in the Kashamu family. Every year, we try to reach out to as many people as possible and uplift them, help them, and feed them. That is the essence of the whole thing.

“I would like to implore others who are in privileged positions to learn from this and do the same. I’m here for them and I will continue to give quality representation. I will continue to do my best to make sure that Ijebu Igbo is placed on the path of more development.”

Minority Whip of the Ogun State House of Assembly, AbdulRasheed Kashamu, has felicitated his constituents on the Yuletide.

The lawmaker, who represents Ijebu North State Constituency 1, rolled out food items and cash to make the season memorable for his people.

Kashamu paid homage to the royal fathers led by the paramount ruler of Ijebu Igbo, the Orimolusi of Ijebu Igbo, Oba Lawrence Jaiye-Oba Adebajo (Ojuromi VI) and the other five traditional rulers.

He also greeted political leaders, ward executives, groups and other eminent personalities in the constituency.

  • INEC List: Don’t rejoice yet, Adebutu tells Kashamu

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) in Ogun State, Hon. Ladi Adebutu, yesterday advised Sen. Buruji Kashamu not to rejoice yet over his recognition by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the party’s candidate in the state.

Adebutu said the INEC’s final list, which has the name of Buruji and his co – travellers as candidates for the forthcoming general elections, is “just a temporary one,” declaring that he, Adebutu, would not only smile but also laugh last.

The federal lawmaker, who made this known in a statement by Dayo Rufai, the Associate Media Team Head, Ladi Adebutu Democratic Organisation, added that it was disheartening that INEC would insist on listing Kashamu as a governorship candidate when he was never a part of valid a primary organised and conducted by a legitimate committee of the PDP.

The statement reads: “It is disheartening to note that after we have complied with all electoral guidelines in line with the constitutional provision of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, INEC insists on doing its bidding. We went through an open primary, supervised by the National Secretariat of the party, and even monitored by the same INEC as the electoral umpire, and at the end of it all, we were declared the winner.

“Few weeks after, Sen. Buruji Kashamu, who was never part of the primary sat down somewhere and personally handpicked some names to represent the interest of the party in the state. “To push their desperation further, Buruji went to an Abeokuta High Court to seek for an injunction to force INEC to accept their own list. The injunction was hurriedly granted only for the Court of Appeal in Ibadan to set the order aside.

“So, rather than INEC to respect the order of the appellate court, and accept our own list in compliance with the directive of the PDP NWC, INEC with their position, has now become a tool in the hand of APC where the umpire is now to choose who and who represents the party interest. “Anyway, we remained unshaken and even much more determined to carry on with our campaign to all the LG areas in the state. “We are very hopeful and in high spirit that the final list, which has the name of Buruji and his co travellers, is just a temporary one, as Hon. Ladi Adebutu and other party candidates will smile at the end of the day.”

APC: we’ll field candidates in Rivers, Zamfara

Rivers and Zamfara states All Progressives Congress (APC) will not be part of the governorship and House of Assembly elections slated for March 2.

The party’s candidates’ names are missing on the list of those who will run in the elections released last night by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Two weeks ago, the commission also omitted names of APC candidates in the National Assembly final list of candidates.

Seventy-nine of the candidates are women. Many of them are from Kano and Delta states.

The commission resolved the controversy over the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Ogun State in favour of Senator Buruji Kashamu. The senator and another party chieftain and House of Representatives member, Ladi Adebutu, were battling for the ticket. INEC said it chose Kashamu based on a court judgment.

The commission also resolved the crisis over the APC governorship candidate in Abia State in favour of Uche Ogah, who battled Chief Ikechi Emenike for the ticket.

For Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu is on the list as governorship candidate of the APC. The PDP has Mr Jimi Agbaje as its governorship candidate. The two are seen as the major contenders. Some of the governorship candidates in Oyo State are Adebayo Adelabu (APC), Seyi Makinde (PDP) and Adebayo Alao-Akala (ADP).

First term governors on the list are Umar Ganduje (Kano, APC), Nyesom Wike (PDP, Rivers), Emmanuel Udom (PDP, Akwa Ibom), Ben Ayade (Cross River PDP), Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto PDP), Samuel Ortom (Benue PDP), Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna APC), Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta PDP), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu PDP), Aminu Bello Masari (Katsina APC) and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia PDP).

Others are Dave Umahi (Ebonyi PDP), Sani Bello (Niger APC), Mohammed Abubakar (Bauchi APC), Ishiaku Darius (Taraba PDP), Abubakar Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi APC), Simon Bako Lalong (Plateau APC) and Bindow Jubrilla (Adamawa APC).

Some other candidates who made the list are: Umaru Ahmadu (Adamawa PDP), Nsima Udo Ekere (Akwa Ibom APC), Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom PDP), Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed (Bauchi PDP), Emmanuel Jime (Benue APC), Baba Gana Umara (Borno APC), Mohammed Alkali Imam (Borno PDP),  Owan Enoh John (Cross River APC), Great Ovedje Ogboru (Delta APC), Sunday Oji Ogbuoji (Ebonyi APC), Ayogu Eze (Enugu APC), Mohammed Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe APC), Nafada Usman Bayero (Gombe PDP) and Uzodinma Hope Odidika (Imo APC).

Also on the list are: Ihedioha Emeka (Imo PDP), Mohammed Badaru Abubakar (Jigawa APC), Aminu Ibrahim Ringim (Jigawa PDP), Isa Mohammad Ashiru (Kaduna PDP), Abba Kabir Yusuf (Kano PDP), Garba Yakubu Lado (Katsina PDP), Isa Mohammed Galadu (Kebbi PDP), Abdulrahman Abbulrazaq (Kwara APC), Razak Atunwa (Kwara PDP),  Umar Mohammed Nasko (Niger PDP), Adedapo Abiodun (Ogun APC), Akinlade Adekunle Abdulkabir (Ogun APM), Nwosu Uche (Imo AA) and Jeremiah Timbut Useni (Plateau PDP).

Governorship elections are not holding in Ondo, Ekiti, Bayelsa, Osun, Edo, Kogi and Anambra states.

The APC yesterday faulted INEC over its decision on Zamfara and Rivers. The APC national secretariat accused INEC of double standards in rejecting its candidates in Zamfara State while accepting those presented to it by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano State.

The party expressed confidence that it would present candidates for all elections in Zamafara and Rivers states, as it complied with the provisions of the law and conducted its primaries in the state.

APC National Publicity Secretary Lanre Issa-Onilu told reporters that INEC was being accused by the PDP of working with APC to rig the elections even as it was denying the APC the opportunity to present candidates, despite its compliance with the provisions of its constitution, which says it could either conduct its primaries through direct, indirect or consensus options.

He said: “We have heard that INEC is relying on the fact that courts of equal jurisdiction have given conflicting judgments. We can understand that. What it does mean is that it is not yet Uhuru and we will continue to take steps.

“We are very certain that we did the right thing and the primaries held and INEC is not satisfied with that and the fact that it is our right to field candidates.

“We will follow all the legal means to ensure that all our candidates stand for election this 2019 in Zamfara. The same situation for Rivers.

“For people who are discerning, this is supposed to be the APC that INEC is accused of working for and this is what we are going through in their hand, even though the PDP has repeatedly claimed that it was out to rig election for APC.

“May I remind all of us that we had primaries in Zamfara, which was affected by conflict. But the process allows for three options. You could go with indirect, you could go with direct or you could go for consensus. We have the right under the constitution to exhaust these options, which we did.

“Let me also add that in Kano, PDP did no primary and did not resort to any of these options. Yet, INEC is not saying anything regarding that and all the candidates submitted by the PDP in Kano were accepted. This is a fact that nobody can deny.

“But we will not go to town to start pillorying INEC because it is a critical institution to the success of election. We will continue to trust all institutions because we believe that it is by having strong institutions that we can develop this country. When such institutions make mistakes, rather than vilify them, we will work with them and ensure they follow due process.”

Reacting to reports by Conference of United Political Parties (CUPP) that President Muhamadu Buhari was not fit and healthy to contest the 2019 election, Issa-Onilu said: “Ordinarily, I should not honour the so-called CUPP with any response because in the real sense, they don’t exist. These are members of the PDP, who are looking for space to team up with Atiku as he has promised so that when they get to power, they continue from where they stopped.”

The counsel to the embattled Rivers APC governorship candidate in the state, Tonye Patrick Cole, yesterday at the on-going Appeal Court matter on the disqualification of his client, said INEC should have waited for the Supreme Court before publishing the list.

He said: “INEC cannot release the list of candidates, legally speaking, without the list of APC as submitted by the party.

“As soon as the motion for stay of execution of judgment is served on you, the law is that you do not do anything between the period you are served with that motion, till the period that motion is disposed of, one way or the other.

“INEC has very seasoned lawyers who are not just in their legal team, but also federal commissioners, and I know that they will do the needful and INEC will not do anything until the application for stay is determined somehow.”

  • Kashamu is our adopted son, say Yewa monarchs

Traditional rulers in Yewa have said the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Senator Buruji Kashamu, is “an adopted son of Yewa land”.

They spoke yesterday when Kashamu visited the Yewa Traditional Rulers-in-Council in Ilaro.

The Eselu of Oja Odan, Oba Ebenezer Akinyemi, said Kashamu was an adopted son of the area, adding that he was entitled to the same rights and privileges as the sons and daughters of Yewa land.

The meeting was presided over by the paramount ruler of Yewaland and the Olu of Ilaro, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle.

Oba Akinyemi described Kashamu as “a born philanthropist” and listed the senator’s humanitarian interventions as well as his activities in Ogun State, the Southwest and other parts of Nigeria.

The monarchs, including the Onimeko of Imeko, Oba Benjamin Oyeditan Olanite, prayed for Kashamu’s success at the polls.

Kashamu said he was in Ilaro to seek the blessings and support of the monarchs for his aspiration.

The senator recalled his support for Yewa candidates who aspired to be governors of the state in the past.

He said: “Your Royal Majesty, although the two candidates from Ogun West Senatorial District are your sons, I dare say with all sense of humility that I am your son and loyal friend because as the English would say, ‘a true friend sticks closer than a brother’. There is also a saying that ‘One loyal friend is worth 10,000 relatives’.

“It is for this reason that we have come to seek your support since fate has brought us together.”

Kashamu also reiterated his commitment to releasing all allocations due to local governments.

“I will not deduct from their allocations. This is to ensure grassroots development.

“I also commit to remitting all statutory deductions from staff salaries to the relevant unions and authorities as and when due.

“Also, substantial funds shall be set aside to assist the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Loans from the funds shall attract no interest,” he said

Those that accompanied Senator Kashamu on the visit include his running mate, Dr Reuben Abati, Ogun State PDP chairman, Chief Adebayo Dayo, and Director General of the Kashamu/Abati Campaign Organisation, Chief Remi Bakare, among others.

  • I’m authentic Ogun PDP candidate, says Kashamu

Ogun State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain Senator Buruji Kashamu has said that he is the authentic governorship candidate for next month’s election.

He described the flag bearer recognised by the party’s national leadership as a huge joke, stressing that any candidate not recognised by the electoral umpire is fake.

Kashamu’s running mate, Dr.Rueben Abati, lamented that the National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, erred by declaring Ladi Adebutu as candidate, thereby confusing feeble minded members of the public.

The senator said the court judgment that validated his candidature is biding on the party, hailing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for obeying the court order. He wondered why the PDP, which has been calling for adherence to the rule of law, is violating the court order. Kashamu said Ologbondiyan has only to the nation that PDP believes in illegality, adding that the illegality will not stand. He said: “I operate at the grassroots.  I have done a lot for my people. I am a fighter. I believe in justice. I can shed my blood for truth and justice.  I am not afraid of any PDP NWC. I will fight for my right.”

Kashamu added:”The people of Ogun are well educated, civilised and wise. They do not believe in illegality. They believe in justice. They know how to vote for the right people. You cannot deceive them. I love my people.  My people love me. My people will vote for me. They will vote for PDP.” Kashamu emphasised that an illegal state executive committee cannot conduct a lawful primary, stressing that, although the national chairman and Secretary should submit the name of candidate to INEC, the name can only be generated by the legal executive committee chaired by Adebayo Dayo.

Describing Adebutu as an interloper and a joke, he said: “What has Adebutu done in his life? If Adebutu is governor, what can he do? If I take over the state today, my government will not be holding the local government allocation. If the state government hijack their money, how can they succeed? Local government and party leaders will run the councils based on need analysis.” Kashamu allayed the fear of party members about the effect of the crisis on election, assuring that it will be resolved.

He added: “If I and Adebutu cannot resolve the issue, we will leave it to the court. Anybody that wins with carry on. But, today, I am the authentic candidate.

“Adebutu should stop calling himself the candidate. I am the candidate. The police has recognised me and given me an orderly.  The SSS has given me their men to protect me. Adebutu can campaign for the party, but not as candidate.” The flag bearer blamed the NWC for escalating the logjam, saying that, instead of calling the two sides and uniting the party, they decided to take sides. He said he has directed his vast followers to cooperate with the people on the other side by voting for the PDP during the election, assuring that future court verdicts will still favour him.

  • Kashamu to PDP members: let’s close ranks to win Ogun

The Ogun State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Buruji Kashamu, has urged party members and supporters to end the long-drawn leadership dispute in the state chapter of the party.

The senator advised them to work for the party’s victory in the forthcoming general elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), last Thursday, listed candidates of the Kashamu-backed state executive as authentic flagbearers of the party.

Calling for a really united PDP ahead of the poll, Kashamu noted that though the crisis had caused groupings in the party, he said such groupings should not be allowed to divide the party.

In a statement yesterday, the senator representing Ogun East affirmed his commitment to work with all members of the party.

The PDP candidate said he remained a strong believer in the rule of law to correct any perceived wrong.

The statement reads: “It has been a long-drawn battle between the Adebayo Dayo-led Ogun State PDP Executive and the Sikirulai Ogundele group, which is backed by Oladipupo Adebutu.

“I reckon that when there is a dispute, there could be groupings. But our position has been that we should not allow such groupings to divide us, looking at the glory ahead of us.

“Notwithstanding the misunderstanding between the two groups, now that the courts have delivered their verdicts and the INEC has complied, it is time to look beyond the gladiators, lay aside our personal interests and prejudices and work for the PDP.”

  • Court dismisses Adebutu’s suit against Kashamu

A Federal Capital Territory High Court yesterday dismissed a suit by a member of the House of Representatives, Oladipupo Adebutu, against the emergence of Senator Buruji Kashamu as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State for the March 2 governorship election.

In a judgment, Justice Ajoke Adepoju held that Adebutu, who was nominated by the National Working Committee (NWC) of PDP for the governorship election, could not maintain his suit against the defendants because the primary election that produced him (Adebutu) was conducted in violation of a subsisting court judgment.

Adebutu had, by the suit marked: FCT/FT/CV/29/2018, challenged the refusal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to accept his candidacy.

Justice Adepoju was of the view that the PDP NWC acted in bad faith by disregarding a subsisting judgment of a Federal High Court to produce the candidate.

Justice Adepoju said since PDP was a party in the judgment given by Justice Ibrahim Buba (of the Federal High Court), the judgment of the court was binding on it and must be obeyed and respected so as to protect the sanctity of court in the interest of the rule of law.

The judge noted that it was the party’s (PDP’s) NWC that has the power to conduct governorship primary election, but said the NWC, in exercising such power, must not act in violation of any court judgment.

Justice Adepoju said the PDP NWC cannot hold valid primary election without a recourse to the Ogun State chapter of the party or outright approval of the party until the judgment against it by Justice Buba has been set aside by a higher court.

The judge held that Adebutu’s suit cannot be maintained to declare him a governorship candidate because the PDP NWC, which conducted the primary election that produced him, acted in violation of a judgment of a Federal High Court delivered by Justice  Buba.

Justice Adepoju said she arrived at the conclusion because of the need to ensure the protection of the sanctity of the court and its judgments by parties or individuals.

She noted that the PDP did not do well by disobeying the judgment of Justice Buba with the way it conducted its primary election in Ogun State last year.

  • It’s strange Secondus is backing Adebutu, says Kashamu

The senator representing Ogun East, Buruji Kasamu, has described the support of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman Uche Secondus for the governorship candidacy of Ladi Adebutu as strange.

Kashamu, who spoke in Lagos at the weekend against the backdrop of claims that he had withdrawn from the Ogun State governorship race, said his interest was for the PDP to win the March 2 poll.

He said: “It is strange that the national leadership of the PDP, led by Prince Uche Secondus, is claiming that Ladi (Adebutu) is the governorship candidate of the PDP in Ogun, despite the fact that he emerged through an illegal process. The PDP leaders are the ones making a mistake. They are respectable people but there are no two governorship candidates of the PDP in Ogun. It is the exco of Adebayo that is known to the law. That is why the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is relating with his exco.”

The senator noted that based on existing court judgment, he remained the PDP governorship candidate in Ogun State.

He urged his supporters to remain steadfast and keep the hope alive.

Kashamu said: “I have never issued any statement that I stepped down for Adebutu. What I said was that we should all join hands and work together for the victory of the party. If the court rules that Ladi is the candidate eventually, I will work for him; if the court upholds my victory, I expect him to work for me. But the most important thing is that we should all work together for the victory of the PDP.”

The senator added that INEC recognised him as the governorship candidate of the party in the state.

He said he would gladly allow his supporters to work for Adebutu, if the court rules against him.

“I will not step down unless the court rules otherwise,” Kashamu said.

  • Kashamu rejects Adebutu-led PDP presidential campaign council

The Ogun State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Buruji Kashamu, has rejected another PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation (PDP PCO) chaired by a member of the House of Representatives, Oladipupo Adebutu.

Kashamu described the new body as fake.

In a statement in Ijebu-Igbo, Kashamu, who is the senator representing Ogun East, said the authentic PDP PCO, which he chairs, was inaugurated by the lawful Adebayo Dayo-led State Executive of the party on November 28.

The statement reads: “The purported inauguration of another PDP PCO by the dissident group within the Ogun State PDP is most unfortunate. One is surprised that this is coming at a time well-meaning stakeholders are preaching reconciliation, peace and unity.

“As a lawmaker, he should not portray himself as a lawbreaker. The only PDP chairman known to the law and major stakeholders within the Ogun State PDP is Adebayo Dayo.

“Dayo, as the State Chairman of the PDP, presided over the State Congress where the governorship candidate of our party was elected in line with Section 25(1) of the PDP Constitution 2017 (as amended), which states: ‘There shall be a State Party Congress which shall consist of: The State Chairman who shall be the Chairman.’

“Section 25(2C) states further: ‘The function of the State Congress shall be to: (c)     Elect Governorship candidates of the Party’, among others.”

“Having emerged in line with the provisions of the Constitution of our great party, I am the governorship candidate known to the party, the law and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). It was in line with the decisions and guidelines released by the party that the governorship candidates should head the PDP PCO in their respective states that the party’s stakeholders chose me to lead the campaign in Ogun State.

“So, any other person parading himself as the Chairman of the PDP PCO in Ogun State is an impostor and should be ignored.”

Kashamu urged the security agencies and the national leadership of the party to call Adebutu to order before his importunate actions plunge the party and Ogun State into an unnecessary chaos and crisis.

The senator also urged the national leadership of the party to be neutral wherever there are issues between contending interests within a political party.

“The national leadership should be a father to all wherever there is a dispute between contending groups or forces within the party and not take side with one against the other since we are all members of the same family.”
