January 15 and Fani Kayode’s historical negationism (2)

Before proceeding further I wish to note that I am not in anyway in support of the bloodshed that occurred in the day of January 15, 1966, whether it be civilian or military, that is not to say that the coup of January 15 1966 given all relevant facts was not justified, matter of fact Nzeogwu’s coup was much more justified than the coups of 1975 and 1983 which were effected to correct a number of certain ills those behind the coup perceived in the regimes or administration they toppled then.

I had in the last piece mentioned that the brains of the January 15th coup had wanted to install an Obafemi Awolowo, a Yoruba of Ijebu from Remo in the then Western Region of Nigeria as Premier and not an Azikiwe or MI Okpara, how this piece of information escaped the colourful mind of the “Omo Karo Jire” exponent is at first mind boggling but on deeper reflection one finds that it is merely due to the inter ethnic political squabbles that raged on in the early 60’s between the supporters of Awolowo and Akintola, one must recall that FFK’s father, Remi Fani Kayode had served as Deputy Premier in the puppeteer administration of Ladoke Akintola and perhaps was primed for bigger things in that “finest hour” period of theirs, however the coup of 1966 did shatter such permutations breaking their ugly hold onto power in the Western Region. Perhaps such could be the singular reason why his scion,FFK chooses each and every time to demonize the January 15th coupists.

Major Nzeogwu one of the leaders of that coup barely spoke the Igbo language, dressed more in Northern attire and saw himself first as a Nigerian and nothing more. On the slated day of the coup, Nzeogwu’s entire strike force in the North comprised more of Northern soldiers than those from either the Eastern or Western Regions, same too can be said of soldiers used by Major General Aguiyi Ironsi who mobilized against the coup in the South, notably in Lagos and Ibadan.

An Igbo coup as ponderously illustrated by Fani Kayode would not have seen Nzeogwu threaten to invade the Southern part of Nigeria and Lagos to complete the goals of the Revolution , neither would it have seen General Ironsi calling off such with much commando bluster, that for a short period of time the entire nation was thrown into that eerie feeling that the nation was about to be engulfed in a civil war. So much for an Igbo coup that Nzeogwu, contrary to the agreements later reached between him and IronsI in order to prevent further bloodshed in the aftermath of the coup’s failure in the South was rather arrested and detained in Kirikiri Lagos before he was moved to Aba .

Documented history about events leading to the civil war also posit that Ojukwu then as Military Governor of the East had shown immense reluctance to release Nzeogwu from detention following the blood letting of July 29 coup, it was only after students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka had engaged in a series of protests calling on Ojukwu to release Nzeogwu did Ojukwu do so in March 1967.

In an excerpt from a letter written by Nzeogwu to his onetime military roommate and firwnd Olusegun Obasanjo, Nzeogwu had this to say of Ojukwu.

” You have no doubt heard a lot of rumours about my relations with Ojukwu. We obviously see things quite differently after what he did to my supporters in January 1966. ” This sums all what I have been saying.

As far as I am concerned the present scapegoating of NdiIgbo via the attempted negation of history by FFK is akin to the anti-Semitic behaviour in NAZI Germany , particularly when the Jews were blamed for the defeat of Germany in World War 1. Labelling the coup as an Igbo one, despite the numerous evidence that suggests it is not and never was, is merely the excuse for the senseless killings that occurred during and after the July 29th coup. What FFK fails to note is that those who plotted the July 29 coup, the Muritala’s, Gowon’s, Danjuma’s and Abacha’s had to give reason not only for.the slaughter of those accused of plotting the coup but also the killing of innocent officers and even civilians.

The trouble with the likes of FFK who have been bitten by this Igbo Coup bug is that rather than seek out the truth of such an event from the numerous facts available, they have rather lazily hung unto their negations like some child to some unbelievable urban legend , spooks and ghost stories.

As a Third Generation Nigerian, it is instructive that the lessons of the past are put to good use in our search for a united Nigeria and in our quest for reconciliation and healing, it becomes ideal that we embrace the truth and nothing more, otherwise we will continue to be that fractious entity, though laden with Immense opportunities and a vibrant population continue to totter while nations less endowed make giant strides.

The January 15 coup was thus never an Igbo Coup.

    Period!

    May Nigeria Succeed!!

DORA KAYODE: How Kayode got his groove back

Credited with the turnaround of his talented hubby; Nigeria international Olanrewaju Kayode, Dora Kayode, wife, mother, player intermediary, lawyer, is extending her tentacles in the world soccer business. In this interview with Assistant Editor Taiwo Alimi, the mother of three boys speaks on her newest ventures, life philosophy, and managing her husband’s career among other things.

She is a woman of many parts. As the first Nigerian woman football intermediary (agent), her passion for player managing was ignited out of love for her footballer husband and the quest to reposition his ailing career. That the former U17, U21, and U23 international is now playing regular football with Gençlerbirliği in the Turkish second division is a credit to her hindsight and boardroom deal.

Last weekend, Kayode netted his fourth goal of the season for Gençlerbirliği in the one all score line against Keclorengucu.

Dora said she engineered Kayode’s transfer away from Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine), where he was subjected to three loan deals to join Gençlerbirliği where he would get more playing time.

    ON HUBBY’S CAREER

She said: “He (Kayode) has enjoyed big clubs (Manchester City is one them) but sometimes these big clubs they have lots of players and at the end of the day you find yourself struggling. Not that you are not good but there are extremely talented players that coaches prefer. Also, some of the coaches prefer certain players that they have relationship with at their old clubs, and you cannot do anything right. So, you must go where you are appreciated. You must go where you are needed. That applies to life generally. We must go where we are needed and appreciated.

“When you go there you are going to blossom. You will find your real self, you will find yourself. So, I think Kayode has found himself back. He’s enjoying himself, he’s not under pressure. Easy does it and that is how it should be. And we know that at the end of the season, he would be the target of other clubs and that works for us. Until he retires he has to keep playing and push beyond limit. That is our plan for him and he’s enjoying himself in Turkey. He would still go on and go on until he says stop. Of course, clubs are coming and they are talking and at the end of the season we are going to sit down and decide again where he would go and be appreciated, and be seen. So, the whole world will keep seeing that Kayode is doing his thing. That’s it.

    LIFE BEYOND FOOTBALL

Dora is an unusual king of woman. She fell in love with football, even before she met her husband and that paved the way for the intermediary work with footballers. However, there is a life beyond football.

She said: “My life is not just about football. My team and I are cooking something so strong that we are bringing out by 2024. It is something that everyone will love and I just have to do me- Dora.”

So, how is she coping multitasking as a mother-catering for three boys and wife to a footballer whose home and work she has to manage, and getting down to other businesses on her table?

“It is everyday life. It’s part of me already. I don’t do to impress. It is part of me already. I’m me and I do things my own way. For those who know me and love me naturally, I just flow with them doing things my own way. I don’t do things to impress others and people love me for who I am. Glamour is part of me it is not to impress. It is part of me. You don’t force it. It is who I am and so I feel comfortable doing it. I do it with all happiness. I’m happy in football, I’m happy with what I’m about to do, I’m happy with my friends, I’m happy with where God has placed me. I can’t be ungrateful. I’m happy. I thank God for life. We have paid our dues. I have paid my dues.”

Dora attributed her success to planning and hard work.

“People don’t know the story, they only see the glory. We have put a lot of hard work into this thing. We have sacrificed. It is just like this popular saying; Rome wasn’t built in a day. I keep building, I keep striving, I keep getting better, I keep learning and I keep pushing and at the end of the day there is a goal to achieve and I’ve done justice to that. I have achieved that goal.

While not letting the cat out of the bag yet, what we are planning is something that is landmark. The full gist will be unveiled in 2024 and everyone we go on that journey with me. And they would love it and they would be proud of me.”

Dora is driven by family and friends who have been part of her story.

“I’ve made new friends, and family and they have made me to understand this life more. The drive is there and they want me to know how powerful I can be and I’m just grateful for this new family and the fact that they have really pushed me to where I am now.

As for his sons, she admitted they have taken after their father in the area of sports. “My boys are taking after their father. They are playing football quite well. But, like I said, I’m not going to push it. At the end of the day if they say I don’t want to be a football player I’m going to support them a 100 per cent. As a lover of football, I want them to play football, but you can really say. Football is the only thing they know really, but if it’s not what they want- you can’t predict the future-I have to support my boys’ do whatever their hearts tell them to do.”

    SUPER EAGLES

Like many football fans in Nigeria, she believes the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and handlers of the national teams, especially the Super Eagles, can do better.

“I don’t have any business with the Super Eagles. Let’s leave that to those who are in charge. All I want to do is watch over my man and if they think he’s good enough call him. I believe there are experts in charge of the team and I can’t teach them their job. I love football and I think we have to be organised. We need to know what we want in life, were we are headed. Once we are sure where we are going we would get it right. You can’t wake up in the morning and decide a certain food without planning that it is suitable for you. We have to plan. The problem is that we don’t plan. We need to plan and organise ourselves better so that the best can come out. We play a lot in this country. Everything is just like joke but at the end of the day, either we learn from our mistake, or we remain in it. I hope that we learn our lesson and come back stronger and better.

    WAG

Though Dora is married to a footballer of note, she does not like to be tagged a WAG (wives and girlfriends of high-profile sportsmen)

“I don’t see myself as WAG. I don’t want to be categorized as a WAG. I just want to be seen as Dora and no more. It is not a title for me. There are things that I don’t like to get into me. I want to do things my way. My husband is a brand already, and I want to be one too. I don’t want to be under the umbrella of WAGs and all that. I’m a footballer’s wife all right but I don’t want to be under WAGs category. I don’t want to be categorized as a WAG. That is not what I am, I’m more than that.”

In the same vein, Dora is calm and not given to loud celebration.

“December is an important month for me because it is my birthday month and it is Christmas month. I had my birthday with few friends and it was a special occasion to be among family and friends. Christmas is important to me and an emotional time too, I can act like a baby when it comes to Christmas. You get to be with family and people you have not seen for a long time. It is part of the celebration. I don’t do super party to celebrate Christmas. I prefer a calm time with family. I’m not given to loud celebration just a time out with family and close friends. It is part of who I am, and how I like to do my thing. There is no party,” Dora added.

FA AGENT DORA KAYODE: My hubby will fluorish in Gençlerbirliği

FA licensed football agent, Dora Kayode, has backed her husband, Nigerian international Olanrewaju Kayode to score a lot of goals in his new Turkish club Gençlerbirliği. Dora said Gençlerbirliği offers Kayode the perfect atmosphere to take his game to the peak level.

“We chose Gençlerbirliği because they offer my player the perfect place to grow his game and rediscover his prolific scoring form that the world knows about Kayode. He is a fantastic player, whose worth will continue to go up and the new club is just where he deserves to be.

“It is a strategic move because the plan is to get him back in the thick of the action, playing games and scoring goals. He is at Gençlerbirliği to score goals and goals he will score. His mind is made up to do justice on the pitch and nothing will stop that”, added Dora, a lawyer.

“One thing that makes this deal exciting and incentive for Kayode is that he is in a club where he is appreciated. Gençlerbirliği are a big traditional club in Turkey. It is a good place for Kayode to go and grow his game.

“Kayode’s experience at his former club was not good. Being played on the wing is not a good experience for a centre forward. That is why I say that sometimes you have to take a step backwards to get the bounce that you need back, and that is what Kayode has done with this transfer,” said Dora.

“It was a very tough decision you know. He hasn’t been lucky in the past two seasons. We needed a place where Kayode can play consistently because we want him to be back on the radar, to start scoring goals. We chose this club because they love him, and the coach has promise to put him back on the track. It is a traditional club, well-known club, much organised club with big facility,” she stated.

Speaking further, the agent said: “He will enjoy in this new club because he knows that he has to use this opportunity to show himself again or re-introduce himself again. That is why we chose Genclerbirligi in Turkey.”

“Sometimes, in life, we have to step back in order to move forward. He needs to go where he would be appreciated, where he can explore. He is not a kind of striker that stays in one place. He moves around. For example, if he scores 15 goals, 16 goals or above, you think bigger clubs wouldn’t come? People want to know, is this Kayode we used to know?

Kayode joined Turkish Super Lig club, Genclerbirligi on a two-year contract after leaving Ukrainian outfit, Shakhtar Donetsk following the expiration of his contract, as a free agent.

The 30-year-old has previously featured for other Turkish clubs like Gaziantep, Sivasspor and Umraniyespor.
